Yatta!

1:11 AM
WOAH
Chrome got rid of the wrench! :O

@Purmou you must be on a dev cycle? Mine has the wrench and I'm up to date

Hmmm, if I search a string for "\t" and it returns the position, does it count "\t" as 1 or 2 characters? I could totally test this myself but I figure if someone knows I won't have to. xP

one character
unless you are searching for a literal backslash followed by a t
sigh

Since when people give more priority to perfect circles over freehand circles?

1:27 AM
@jcolebrand I'm guessing beta, Sathya and I had a conversation about this two weeks ago, heh.

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN @jcolebrand?
lol

He even tweeted about it!
Incidentally, the icon is now the same as the one used for the menu in the Facebook iPhone app.

@TheUnhandledException ahem --------------------->

@jcole I'm on the betas
@TimStone indeed it is

So is that going to be the new universal menu icon? I like it.

1:39 AM
think so
could never get used to the wrench, it was just odd

I liked it

it was logical, though, which was good

I can't say I like the triple bar type icons very much
Mainly because it could mean so many things

i'm just waiting for the obligatory lawsuit

Hahaha
Have a bit more faith in humanity

1:44 AM
oh, apple won against samsung
and google will most definitely kill apple in a few months or so
but i still don't fully understand that one...

@Purmou how's that again?
Oh, you mean with technology? You're not very good at this game are you? You don't cater to the technologists. You cater to the people. The mob. The citizenry. I don't tell anyone that I have to support to get an Android phone.

no no
google is very aggressive

Yeah? Remind me again based on market cap who the largest company in the world is?

@TimYiJiang yat yih saam sei ng luhk...

The following is a list of publicly traded companies having the greatest market capitalization, as well as government-owned corporations by estimated market value. Market capitalization is calculated from the share price (as recorded on selected day) multiplied by the number of shares issued. Figures are converted into USD millions (using rate from selected day) to allow for comparison. Some state-owned companies are far larger than even the largest public corporation. For example Saudi Aramco's value is estimated from $781 billion to $7 trillion USD, more than a dozen times the size of ...

1:47 AM
i know
apple beats google financially by a longshot

I mean, I thought that you knew some secret I didn't, about how Google is going to "kill" Apple.
Apple has their own chip division. Does Google?

knows secrets
4
But not about that.

Apple owns the smartphone market, and they support n-3 revisions, completely.

@TimStone Wut?

hold on, i'm talking exclusively in this lawsuit buddy

1:48 AM
@TimStone o:

How many Android phones are running even the second most recent release?
@Purmou no you weren't. Because that just means you're talking out of your arse.
Apple will win, every single time.

@TimStone did we or did we not tell you that mentioning the secrets is off-limits. ):

@TimYiJiang Clearly it's a terribly malformed three.

@RebeccaChernoff I keep telling @TimStone he'll never get his diamond if he keeps it up. Secrets is sekrets

@RebeccaChernoff Oh, I didn't know that meta-secrecy was also off-limits.
NO ONE SAW ANYTHING

1:49 AM
yes, i was, and what you're doing now just means that you're talking out of your ass...

whistles

why would i mention apple and google in the same sentence right after mentioning samsung vs. apple?

Wut wut wut wut wut?

Because you somehow think that this lawsuit in some way doesn't set precedent for Apple to win again.
The people will "know" that Apple is "supposed" to win.

Mummy, Timmy here knows secrets and he won't tell me! MUMMY!

1:50 AM
You have to think about the mob, not technologists.

i'm not thinking about anything in specific...
i'm just as much of a google fanboy as the next late-90's kid
so forgive me for expressing that

OMG I CAN ZOOM BY PINCHING MY TRACKPAD. I (OR, MORE ACCURATELY DELL) OWES APPLE MONEYS!

well I am a late-90's kid, and had you asked me to predict Apple taking the world by storm I wouldn't have imagined it for the world.

oh, wait...late-90's kid and you're 33?
are you playing games with us now?

@mootinator They're going to let you slide, since you own a Dell laptop.

1:52 AM
DUDE. NOT COOL.

Speaking of games...

unlike my parents, I grew up with a Laptop that had Chrome on it, not a behemoth with America On Line!
nor have I ever touched an Apple II

Did someone just say grew up and Chrome in the same sentence?
Has it been around that long already?

@mootinator well, i grew up with firefox, really. but chrome took my household by storm when i was 9

@Purmou I was in high school from 93-97. Pretty sure that means I was a kid in the 90's. I still remember when Google launched.

1:54 AM
@jcolebrand I meant born in the late-90s

@Purmou that sucks for you then, in like 17 ways.
@Purmou oh, see, that's not what that phrase means. It means "when you grew up".

if i grew up in the late 90's i'd remember google launching, like you did
google has been around for as long as i can remember

@jcolebrand Missed out on Oregon Trail, and...

@Purmou That's a 90s-baby :-p

anyways

1:55 AM
@mootinator OMG OREGON TRAIL those were the days

@mootinator omg OREGON TRAIL

I grew up with a C64 and an Amiga :P

my point is simply that I advocate what I know

@Purmou "anyways", this is called "language" and it's something we all need to work on. So we can communicate.

for you, apple has existed for as long as you can remember
and google is the new kid in town
for me, google has existed for as long as I can remember

1:57 AM
Eh, Apple existed but they were effectively bankrupt

Apple was never nearly as important

8 secs ago, by Purmou
Apple was never nearly as important
I want to quote that for posterity

oh come on

11 mins ago, by jcolebrand
Yeah? Remind me again based on market cap who the largest company in the world is?
because the Stock Market disagrees with you

until the "i-" line came around, apple was practically nothing for a while

1:58 AM
6 mins ago, by jcolebrand
well I am a late-90's kid, and had you asked me to predict Apple taking the world by storm I wouldn't have imagined it for the world.

@mootinator You've never lived if you haven't gotten dysentery.

lmao
@TimStone rescues the conversation

@TimStone aka "diarrhea" no?
@TheUnhandledException lmfao
somebody remind me why I'm not writing VBA?

Because it's VBA. But you should totally overlook that and try writing it.

@TimStone It was the best part of the week at school. Huhuhuhuhuhhuhuhuh. Hey dude, check out your tombstone!

1:59 AM
I have been overlooking it
something about getting paid
and remarkably, they don't pay me if I don't write it, so let me earn some cash

@jcolebrand Because taking about dysentery beats VBA any day

oh, and explain to me how apple gets away with their shit prices

We've moved on @Purmou ;-)

Dysentery is rather unpleasant.

sigh, whatever

2:00 AM
We're all about the Oregon Trail now
and if you've never played it, you really must

oregon trail = VBA?

@mootinator I also remember playing some game about transporting goods across Canada in a tractor trailer, but I can't recall the name.

The Oregon Trail is a computer game originally developed by Don Rawitsch, Bill Heinemann, and Paul Dillenberger in 1971 and produced by the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium (MECC) in 1974. The original game was designed to teach school children about the realities of 19th century pioneer life on the Oregon Trail. The player assumes the role of a wagon leader guiding his party of settlers from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon's Willamette Valley over the Oregon Trail via a Conestoga wagon in 1848. The game has been released in many editions since the original release by various ...

@TheUnhandledException i'm already ahead of you XD

@Purmou I wish
@TimStone OOoooooooooooh I remember that!

2:01 AM
@jcolebrand and @TimStone you're both crazy

I do not remember that.

And the one where you design a race car? did you have that one? It really taught about wind resistance and angles and understanding dynamics

eh, if i even try to get in on this conversation, i'll somehow be bombarded with comments about stock markets and superiority

And of course WitWiCS

@mootinator Nor I. They must have made it up
I CALL SHENANIGANS!

2:02 AM
NUMBER MUNCHER!
or whatever

so no thank you, enjoy reminiscing on your oldies

It involved Canada, it was srs bsns. Shenanigans denied.

i'll just peacefully turn on my PS3 here and walk away :D

@mootinator Frogger

@TimStone Link or it didn't happen ;-)
TO ARQUADE!

2:03 AM
no "u"

status-unshenaniganed

Also, I remember Frogger

FREE REP for the first non-dupe!

@TheUnhandledException I will vote to close your off-topic ITG question so hard.

and Q*bert, and Pong

2:04 AM
If it was on apple II and not on this list, I probably didn't come across it.

those were on the Play Station

ahem narrowed the search
They gave free software to schools or something, I think...

@mootinator Oh yes. I remember this
Anyway I am out. Catch you all later!

@TimStone how do you make the mod tags?

2:43 AM
136 new messages? O.O
not reading all that

@animuson wuss

READ READ READ READ
needs to stop being amused by his work.

I'm so confused >_<

status-bydesign

If I output numbers in place of each space that should exist, I get @param11234Integer11234intervals123The but if I output to represent the space, I end up with @param Integer intervals The -.- It's obviously inserting the correct number of spaces as demonstrated by the numbers. I don't understand what's happening here.

2:57 AM
Doing laundry.

@animuson DUDE PICKING UP R&C AT MIDNIGHT

@Purmou: Mine is coming conveniently in the mail via UPS. :D

when though? ;D

probably around noon-ish when I get up
although I apparently have to get up because someone is coming to fix the garage door -.-

what timezone are you in?

3:03 AM
Apparently css class names are case sensitive. This is the first time in over 10 years that's tripped me up.

better not take long
CDT

well, then I will have it 10 hours before you do 8D

lol

I have never had the chance to improve a suggested edit, but someone suggested a edit on one of my posts and I improved and it created a new revision -.- is this normal? meta.stackoverflow.com/posts/145111/revisions

@ajax333221 Yes, their edit gets approved as a revision, and then any changes you make are in another revision

3:05 AM
@mootinator wait, are they?

@animuson oh, that sucks... I did a minor edit thing thinking it would be merged

@jcolebrand Well, Chrome thinks they are. SO seems to agree.

3:18 AM
lol
someone doesn't like jquery!
@ThiefMaster delete please? stackoverflow.com/tags/not-jquery/info

@Purmou tags that aren't associated to any given questions are deleted at GMT 0 by automated process.
I figured you knew that by now.

i'm sure i've read it before, but didn't really try to remember it as I didn't feel it would be important
but now I know

there you go then

3:38 AM
sigh

hm?

I can't figure out where I'm losing my spaces. :(

lol

Hmmmm, maybe if I hashed it out and put it back in later using the Markdown functions....
Grrrr >_<
Oh yay it worked. happily trots off like he wasn't just frustrated for 2 hours straight

4:18 AM
@jcolebrand I see you still haven't gotten any better at conversation.
sigh

I disagree. As do the other people in the room at the time holding an active conversation who did not interrupt me.
Who are well known to interrupt me

Ah, I forgot how important you are. Sorry.

tsk tsk, don't bother yourself with that

2 hours ago, by The Unhandled Exception
@TimStone rescues the conversation

Yeah, I was here for that
And Tim being one of my friends, who is known to interrupt me
I feel like I'm just repeating the same song here

4:22 AM
If a conversation needs rescuing, someone is probably doing it wrong.

which conversation we talkin about here?

Like the guy who kept repeating falsehoods?
@Purmou he's talking about ours
where you kept repeating that you were a 90's child, and that Google is going to cream Apple.

90's child part was an epic misunderstanding

@jcolebrand Like the guy who harasses people for making casual comments (in a casual chat room) well beyond the point where the other person is interested in contributing.
That's not a conversation, it's ranting. And it's rude.

and Google creaming Apple is a huge display of your stubbornness and association of success in legal issues to stock market reports
and you're still being stubborn instead of simply acknowledging that I said it was a matter of preference--I just hope Google wins
and that i, perhaps, don't want to jump on the apple bandwagon

4:28 AM
@Purmou you didn't say "I hope google wins" you said "Google is going to cream Apple" (or was it "own" or "beat", I forget)
@Purmou I don't want to jump on their bandwagon either, I'm strictly speaking from a commercial capitalistic point of view. They simply DOMINATE the entire industry when it comes to mobile devices, and consumer electronics.

so, i'll leave you to your distorted opinion of stock markets and overpriced products and the number of iPhones, iPads, and iMacs you see people using everyday somehow affecting which way a patent lawsuit will go

Nobody can touch them, and they've got a legal team that goes for miles

do you watch football?

I detest physical sports based solely on brutality.
I may watch it on occasion

the brutality in the sport or your own brutality?

4:30 AM
in the sport
I used to play tackle and guard
it's just mindless slamming of bodies, there's very few artists in sports
the few artists are the reason I watch any sports

that's a very unjustly generalized reason to not watch sports...

to not watch sports based on brutality? Because they don't involve skill?
Notice that I am not saying that there is NO skill in football (and I assume we're talking American Football here)

to say there are very few artists in sports
it doesn't matter, I just meant any sport

I'm just saying that the majority of football is the same three set of plays, and it's not artful
Most sports (soccer included) have artists aplenty
hell, even hockey has a few fanciful things that can be done because ice is very intriguing

okay, whatever, whatever

4:33 AM
the sports I enjoy the most are gymnastics
why do you ask?

my point is, if you're rooting for something to happen, do you say "Oh, I hope x wins!" or do you say "X is gonna win, no question."

I don't root for teams, and I evaluate the percentages of win as the time runs out. So at the beginning it's very 50/50
as one side displays a phenomenal offense and defense combination, I start to lean in their direction as to outcome

okay
not in the scope of sports
"Oh, I hope X happens!" or "X is gonna happen, no question."

neither
how can you predict without information?

you are probably one sorry sap
do you not have any optimism?

4:37 AM
nah, I'm quite the life of the party, when it's not related to betting or sports

do you not ever tell yourself that something is going to happen

I have lots of optimism

it really seems like you don't

I do plenty of times, when I know something of the potential otucomes
I don't, however, just wantonly hope that things occur in a certain magical order

when you apply for a job and it's 50/50 that you'll get it, you don't tell yourself you did well and that you're getting the job? just to make yourself a little more confident?

4:38 AM
Nope, I know either way before them if they're going to hire me
just based on how much effort I put into things

but i said if it's 50/50
as in, there's another equally qualified candidate
don't restrict to the situations I'm giving you. do you never behave that way when there is more than one possible outcome?

Let me put it like this: when I last applied for jobs, I sent out two resumes. I had interviews at both organizations. I knew that I needed to make the move to Shreveport (for family reasons) so I called NASA Johnson and told them I wasn't going to take the job. Even without a firm offer from Shreveport.
Most software developers send out a half dozen or more resumes and sweat the details
I have a certain confidence because I'm constantly weighing details
I still take risks
and I still get elated
but I know the factors and don't rely on blind luck

well, then you wouldn't possibly understand

wouldn't possibly understand the blind enthusiasm of youth?
I was young once.
I decided I hated not knowing

oh shut up with that
"i was young once"

4:42 AM
I'm twice your age and then some

that's not what i meant--there are plenty of people your age who act the same way i do

I've spent the past 18 years learning how to hone balancing factors. I've spent the past 18 years studying the mob mentality.
@Purmou I know
That's why I study them and am apart from them

the reason I said "Google will kill Apple in a few months" is because I want Google to win, and I'm just expressing that in a confident voice

But there's absolutely no reason to make a decision right now.
And more specifically, in regards to which lawsuit?

4:53 AM
I'm sure you've seen infographics like this right?
This particular one is rather out of date

well, I haven't and I feel proud about it :)

Where's Kevin? @moot

sorry, nobody was talking to me... pardon my manners

@ajax333221 your modals?

@jcolebrand my English again... I thought "modales" meant that

4:56 AM
no problems
was looking for geek humor

I honestly can't get the gist of that infographic
BUT THAT'S BESIDE THE POINT
the primary thing here is that you should respect that people don't care about a company's financial or legal history
(for which both apple and google are notorious, anyways)
i want Google to win just because I like Google, and have more of their products
so I support them more

My internet connection is down, but chat is up. EXPLAIN THAT

the primary thing is that neither of you should care about any other people's opinion over the internet (except this very opinion)

@MichaelPetrotta obviously your internet is up

that's all there is to it

5:00 AM
@Purmou not really ... that should be the prime point. Those are all (well, once were) pending lawsuits between companies, following the arrows. Shows just how much potential there is for various outcomes, and why no outcome can be "guaranteed"

That's the voice of logic speaking, @jcolebrand. (Standard) web pages don't load, but chat refreshes. I'm sure there's a logical explanation, but.

@Purmou I should not respect people who make an unfounded claim and then tell me I'm wrong when I question that.
@MichaelPetrotta could it be a DNS issue?

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying you have no respect for different opinions

@Purmou I do have respect for different opinions.

You are free to judge by facts, let me be free to hope things

5:01 AM
I don't have respect for wildly unfounded floundering opinions based on whims.
I didn't say you couldn't have them

Possibly. Sorry to interrupt discussion of the patentocolypse.

I just don't respect them
@MichaelPetrotta lol
just try some pings
maybe nslookup
want some IPs to test by?

well, wildly unfounded floundering opinions get people places a lot

[citation-needed]
afk, smoke

hm
good to know, thank you
and anyways, risks are based off of unfounded opinions. You don't know any outcome, but you take the risk anyways
you can't always predict what will happen, but some of the greatest unfounded opinions led to some of the greatest risks ever taken
but, whatever
i'm done arguing in the Tavern

5:04 AM
nah, thanks @jcolebrand, but things look copacetic now.

@MichaelPetrotta ALIENS

5:29 AM
TIL there's a fish with a transparent head...
Barreleyes, also known as spook fish (a name also applied to several species of chimaera), are small deep-sea argentiniform fish comprising the family Opisthoproctidae. Found in tropical-to-temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. These fish are named for their barrel-shaped, tubular eyes which are generally directed upwards to detect the silhouettes of available prey; however, according to Robison and Reisenbichler these fish are capable of directing their eyes forward as well. The family name Opisthoproctidae is derived from the Greek words opisthe ("behind") and pro...

tastes like victory, my friend

I just finally got Google Code Prettify working correctly on my site ^_^
The Walking Dead: Episode 3 comes out today too :)

I will

The mod handling my flag dismiss it as helpful, but the post is not removed
I'm curious why it is not removed?

10:55 AM
Nvm it's bombed

11:29 AM
It appears that a bunch of us from the room were hit by a serial downvoter last night. a bunch of our questions were downvoted (I had 6 downvoted). Also @edorian, @webarto, @tereško and @deceze were also hit...

yep, no doubt about it

Lix
@bal - anymore "famous" replies from your tweet yesterday?
I saw most of the big shots and mods retweeted it too...

yeah, I'm fairly sure it's my most-retweeted tweet by now

Thanks a bunch for the help!

@Lix Congrats and commiserations for reaching the get-nagged-to-help-keep-the-site-clean level.

Lix
11:47 AM
@dan - thanks :P
I'll do my part :P

I know. And you'll have even less time to answer questions now ;)

Hi folks, is there a reliable way to look up US Cell numbers online?

1:45 PM
@Moshe how-so?
To determine if a number is likely a US cell carrier number?
Or to find the cell number for J. Cole Brand

hiya
whats wrong? not able to do upvote/downvote/ seem its locked

Can you provide ANY sort of explanation?
at 108 meta rep you certainly have enough to upvote. What question are you trying to vote on?

any
neither it up-voting nor down.

On meta? on Stack Overflow?

on meta ony
and nor I am getting any kind of message too.
seem I am in queue :D

1:58 PM
There is no queue on meta to vote
How many votes have you done since GMT 0 last?
only 6 ever on meta, that's easy enough to suss out
I honestly have no idea why you wouldn't be able to vote on meta.
What browser are you using?

2:26 PM
@jcolebrand Known troll, probably ran into a super-rare type of ban. Don't waste your time.

Oooooh

@jcolebrand If mobile number 123-456-7890 calls me, I want to see who owns the number? Or look up a mobile number for J Cole Brand.

@Moshe Nope.

In this case a simple text message resolved the question. :-D

2:37 PM
Well I thought you were trying to write a fancy app, not handle something for iOS integrated components
Yes, in the case of an unrecognized text or call, a simple "I'm sorry, I don't recognize this number, who is this please" often resolves everything.

Haha, nope. Just trying to figure out who sent me another "hey, I have an app idea, call me, maybe." text.
