I love how people put "The question is widely applicable to a large audience" bounties on their tumbleweed questions.

It is applicable to a wide audience, the audience just doesn't know it yet! >_>

Clearly everyone else doesn't know how to use Google to find their unanswered question.

4 hours later…
5:10 AM
Finished a HW assignment with 42 commits. Feeling awesome about it.

@Moshe I see the obligatory homework comments are as redundant as they've always been.
//
//  Opens an output stream
//

bool openOutputStream(ofstream &stream, string fileName){...

1:37 PM
@moot yea, I think professors prefer that.

1:55 PM
@Moshe I wish professors would teach something that doesn't make coders hate commenting when they come out of school.

2:05 PM
@mootinator You wish professors tought obfuscated C?

commenting too much is contraproductive
import urllib # import the urllib module - saw this recently in a paste from #python. seriously, who needs such a comment
@Moshe: I think it'd be better to use std::endl instead of '\n' when writing to cout or cerr

3:47 PM
Things which actually need good comments: 1. APIs and/or Interfaces. 2. Anything unclear, complicated, kludgey...

4:08 PM
Most of my comments come in the form of "... |:"
// FIXME: Probably shouldn't do this

That's self explanatory.
/* TODO: Implement less stupidly */

Heh, I actually have one that starts out "This is terrible, and I should be ashamed of myself."

/* TODO: You know, I bet the server could handle the 1k needed to cache this entire table instead of querying it every request. But that seems too much like work right now. */

Incidentally that's similar to how the rest of the comment goes.

4:12 PM
Parphrased, "It's easier than doing it in JPQL, and there's only a few elements in this loop"

I just ESD killed a process, whoops.
Fortunately that appears to be all I killed.

A tactical strike.

flashy level-up animation plays

Look at you, Mr. 20k
Congratulations :D

:D

@JeremyBanks Well done, sir.
By 20k, you should be able to code up a flashy animation pretty quickly, so I'll expect to see that within the hour. Fanfare sound effect optional, but encouraged.

By 20k I have learned that $(".gravatar img").levelUp() is the way to go.

Ugh, sorry to tell you this, but that displayed as code instead of the actual animation on my end, thanks to balpha and his no-random-eval() policy for chat.

@ThiefMaster Why's that?

But I guess it doesn't matter if you don't need the buffer-flushing behaviour

4:27 PM
@ThiefMaster Ah, no, not here.

@JeremyBanks An even 20k, too. Grats! :)

Yes, 10 necro reps. The incredibly passive scheme for Canada to take over SO is proceeding as planned.

4:45 PM
@mootinator This scheme has been working quite well for me too lately.

5:42 PM
Anyone know of a legitimate place to buy TV shows online?

Anonymous
@Moshe Amazon Instant Video, though it's streaming only (and America-only, damnit.)

So not iTunes?

6:32 PM
@mootinator iTunes doesn't have the show I'm looking for.
@JeremyBanks Yea, that's annoying.

1 hour later…
7:44 PM
I'm amused by the attempt by the downtown mall here to make Black Friday happen.
It was basically empty, with the exception of the store that was giving away free Apple crap.

Q: How can I throw an exception from XSLT?

AbinI want to throw an exception if one tag doesn't contain an attribute.

There's a minor argument in the comments about whether this is a real question or not. Am I an idiot for not seeing the OP's clear, legitimate question?

8:35 PM
@mootinator Giving away? Apple swag? I want.

Sadly, there are no direct flights between here and NYC, so you wouldn't even be able to pay thousands of dollars for a chance at free swag.

@mootinator :-/
Where's "here"?

YXE

None that will get you here before 8:30pm leaving after 3:43pm ;)
Delta always seems so cheap.

8:46 PM
@mootinator Yea, it's almost Shabbat anyway. Can't fly then. What kind of free Apple stuff are they giving out anyway?

I honestly don't remember, I got a flyer about it the other day. Grand opening sale.

Oh, ok.
Well, I'm trying to decide --if-- when I should spring for an iPhone 5.

Ahhhhh....
It opened at 1pm, that explains the lineup at lunch.

How do I strike through something in here?

Like this

8:50 PM
lol

Click the help link, it knows about that one.

Oh
Two, no three dashes.
I was missing just a dash of dash.

Just one.

On each side.
I asked about the non-American TV because of this show, which isn't available on iTunes or anywhere.
Eh, anyway.
Have a good weekend @moot, I'm off.

Later!

9:23 PM
Hmmm, I can't decide whether to award my bounty based on utilitarian or socialist principles :P
