@GeorgeMarian Time to get a better window manager? :-)

@ChrisJesterYoung Heh, yah maybe.
All these annoyances may just lead to me switch to Fedora. (Not that there aren't lots of annoyances in most OSes.)

Which windowing system are you using ATM?

Good question. I have no idea what Ubuntu's default window manager is.
Gnome is the desktop manager. Compiz is a composter. Metacity, I think ti may be.

Yep.
I don't much like Metacity, so, I feel your pain.
I use Kubuntu on this system.

What are some of the other window manager names? Because it's small headache to navigate these waters.

12:09 AM
Enlightenment, Window Maker, Fvwm, ...

Goodness, is it a sign that I'm getting old? I really just want it to make sense, instead of having to RTFM some "hidden" manual.

Hehehehehe.

lol, Window Maker. I'm familiar with the other two, in that I've heard of them.

You want more lol? Try twm for size.

The Window Manager?
Ah, Tab. heh

12:12 AM
Yay BSoD being a good reason to go home

Ah, yes. Some of these screenshots look familiar, from way back in the day. As in the first time I waded into the Linux waters in the mid-90's. lol

And yay for not being raining when I walked my dogs. Now to my belly.

@drachenstern See, if you were on Linux...

@George enlightenment was the one cmdrtaco on /. Was always posting about when /. Didn't yet have userids
Ok, food

@drachenstern Enjoy.
Oh, yah...the main menu on the mouse. I remember using window managers like that.

12:19 AM
Hmmmmmm

@TimStone Is that so?

A: Does it matter the order you tag your question

jjnguyThey did not just rearrange your tags, they changed one of them slightly. And, no, the order doesn't matter. (The site will auto-order the tags for you according to tag popularity.) See the slight difference between asp.net-mvc-3 and asp.net-mvc-3-rc2.

Do the tag bubbles on those tag links load the SO content for anyone?

@TimStone They do in Chrome.
Ditto in Minefield. Though, there was some jerkiness one time.

@GeorgeMarian Well, I mean, the bubbles come up, but the content isn't wrong for you?
(hover over the tag there for comparison)

Looks good here. Let me screencap it.
@TimStone ^^^

12:27 AM
Ah, OK, it is broken for you too, I just explained poorly. ;) Thanks!
And actually, I knew I had seen this mentioned before, @badp was already several steps ahead of me:

Ok, I just have to know WTF now. :P

Q: Tag bubbles on metas point to meta tags, not parent tags.

badpSee this answer: all the "rss" and "help us edit this wiki" (and possibly the subscribe link too?) point to the meta site -- whereas a click on the link proper goes to the parent site. Reproducible on MSO: featured. The tag link points to Stack Overflow, where it's pointless, but the bubble fet...

The bubble is loading content from MSO, even though the tags point to SO.

@TimStone You're welcome

12:29 AM
@badp I had even up voted you for that post before. ;)
Hah, damn.
Where's @Pekka when we need his bounty lust?

@TimStone Ah, part of it was a misreading of "content" on my part. (I was staring at the freaking corners trying to see differences. I even leaned in close to the monitor.)

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, no, that was a total descriptive fail on my part.
Sorry abut that, heh

Is there a feature-req for a list of already completed suggested edits?

No worries. Splicing that image was actually pretty cool. Totally painless and elementary, but still cool. Geek?

@YiJiang If you need them to meta rep whore (e.g., talk about them) you know where the permalinks are

12:32 AM
@GeorgeMarian It is surprisingly smooth looking
@YiJiang To what extent? I think moderators have a list of recently approved (at least?) suggested edits, but you don't have a list of ones you've approved.

@TimStone Two full-sized screen caps, layered, cropped and sliced. I didn't even have to think about it much.

@TimStone Well, I'd like to see the full list of recently approved edits, hrm...

The biggest problems were: 1) I was on the history tab initially 2) GIMP is annoying with pasting layers. WTF is a floating selection? Paste it in a new layer and I'll move the thing around if I want to do so. :)

Ugh, that's the worst thing about GIMP.

12:38 AM
@JasonPlank It boggles the mind. What's the purpose of this floating selection? Can't I perform operations on a layer just as well? (Actually, even more operations.)
@YiJiang Webby games?

@GeorgeMarian Mozilla's HTML5 games contest

Nice.

@GeorgeMarian Agreed. It's so counter-intuitive...

Today is a crazyday

In a good or bad way?

12:42 AM
in a bad way. too many distractions
I was pulled off my project to help with another project, and now am hurrying up and waiting on that one

Q: Display onebox title in starred/pinned messages list

Brant BobbyWhen a message containing a onebox is starred or pinned, the star list displays the original URL in a hyperlink. Onebox being turned into an ugly url Instead of a URL, the text should be a descriptive label depending on what kind of onebox it was, when possible. For example: Stack Exchange ...

Already did. :P

@TimStone well make sockpuppets and upvote moar!
oh wait, I have a sockpuppet!
lol, my sockpuppet has 26 replies in the supercollider
my sockpuppet gets more love than I do! :'(

Random Gaming reps!
Oh, on an answer I need to update too, hrm..
Holy crap I've gone blind.
I just got some heart disease awareness poster from my university, and it's...

Does twitter's URL shrinker provide any stats?

@TimStone it's... it's full of STARS!?!?!?!

12:49 AM

oh god. it's worse :-)

Definitely, my god.

@TimStone Looks like their designer is a fan of Meta, creating such a clearly joke poster for Friday

Hahah

@TimStone Did they contract out the desktop publishing to a Jr. High School, or something?

12:51 AM
@GeorgeMarian Maybe, I'm very confused who could have put that together and have gone "Hmm, yeah, that looks good."

@TimStone Yah, I understand the hearts. But, red lettering on a candy cane background?

@TimStone There's some white in your red.
Some black too.

@GeorgeMarian Now we'll have to link peppermint to heart disease, how problematic.

shakes fist at docking station and monitor

:o

@RebeccaChernoff prepare for a crazy town hall digest mother meta question exrtrodinare!

I am typing my longest question ever :-)
um
before I do, I should ask if you have any more Town Halls planned...
If you don't I will feel really retarded

1:22 AM
I feel like this should be as simple as 1) unplug monitor cable from laptop 2) plug monitor cable into docking station 3) kick back and look at display on big nice monitor |:

@RebeccaChernoff it should be!

Um yes? Ubuntu post is up and Gaming is coming tonight but I thought I'd set up the docking station first lol.
Ethernet and power are coming through docking station...

@RebeccaChernoff Eh, docking station for your laptop?

@RebeccaChernoff wait Ubuntu had a town hall and I missed it?
And gaming's town hall is tonight? WTF, how did I not know? :-(
Oh, nevermond

You asked if I have any more planned...

1:24 AM
POST is up :-)
Sorry

@TheRenamedException I think she means that the Gaming post is coming too, otherwise I definitely missed something. :P

I got really scared there

must. be. smarter. than. the. docking. station.

@TimStone yeah I got it now, I was confused
I searched for Gaming's post like 5 hours ago

@TheRenamedException I was too, hahah

@RebeccaChernoff Did you Windows + P?

Q: How can we improve the Town Hall Digests?

The Renamed Exception TL;DR version: If you saw my Town Hall Digests, what can be done to improve them, given Michael Mrozek's format and Yi Jiang's GM script? Should these even exist, and if so, what format should they take? Even though I've said it before, I can't emphasize it enough, so I would like to start b...

Cough cough cough

@YiJiang I thought you'd like that :-)
also, tagged [rchern-rocks]

@RebeccaChernoff Google is not familiar with this model. :P Checked drivers and what not, obviously?

that's probably an abuse of the tag system but I decided F*^$ it, it's the truth! :-)
damn, Jeff didn't like that
Ok, that was a bad idea, I admit it :-)

1:37 AM
ahem
Also, typo on my edit there, ha!
Well, at least I got that in before Jeff obliterated the tag ;)

@YiJiang :-)

1:53 AM
@TimStone, page for the model says there are no drivers (;

is anyone good at stereograms? (crossing your eyes)
where is the blue part going

@RebeccaChernoff Maybe that's why it doesn't work ;) But hrm..

haha
well, I'd expect the support page to let me know if I needed something (;

@TheRenamedException I can't believe @RebeccaChernoff or someone else hasn't went ahead and rejected that edit :D

Q: How will Editor, Strunk & White and Copy Editor be affected by the new <2k edit mechanism?

Popular DemandHow will Editor, Strunk & White and Copy Editor be affected by the new <2k edit mechanism? Will submitting an edit as a <2k user count towards those badges? 2:07 AM
@waffles If it takes 2 users to approve an edit, why does the suggested edit info section show only one approver?

@YiJiang Example? There was a list of one-click approve exceptions, but it seems to have been edited away...wonder if that was by mistake.

@YiJiang it does not at the moment

Of course, the primary source that just flew in is better ;)

@waffles stackoverflow.com/edit-suggestions/1936 - Chacha has > 20k reps, yet it only shows him as the single approver

but we may enable 2 votes required on SO ... nothing is lasting in the queue more than a minute at the moment ... 2 votes would still be approved really fast

2:11 AM
@waffles Oh, you mean it only takes one approver now?

@YiJiang correct ... but we are probably going to scale it to 2 ... if I manage to code this up today
then we will look at the data in 3-4 days and see if upping the number to 2 helped any

shakes head

Ah. I'm distracted by my docking station / monitor.

shakes fist at them for you

todays SO stats ... 286 edits ... 256 approved ... Cody Gray did 23 votes today ... he must have OCD
by the time I make a decision somebody always beats me

@waffles I've always thought the edits were been approved a little too fast

yeah we need a 2 vote experiment ... but lots of js fixes to support that

2:16 AM
Hmm. Time to try the 23" monitor I suppose.

of course the owner should have a 1 vote accept

Alternatively, I was thinking of a [feature-req] for a complete list of suggested edits, approved or otherwise, so that 10k'ers or whoever can revert the changes if something bad slips through

also ... I am looking at suppressing the queue indicator if there are less than 5 items in the queue
@YiJiang we have a mod screen ... may move it to tools

@waffles That's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure how that would help

@YiJiang my concern is that I do not want to over-distract people ... 1/2s appearing and vanishing all the time are a problem
We also kicked the idea of only giving top N users in the site access to the queue

2:19 AM
@waffles Tuck it away into the tool menu then?

but 2 votes it a very important test we need to run

Crap, just clicked the flag link on /review by mistake. :/

BAD @TimStone, BAD!

@RebeccaChernoff GO FIX IT BEFORE I'M EMBARRASSED! :(

@YiJiang ... showing it on the bar is good imho ... "queue is out of control - please help us"
it has been very effective
any feedback on my wonderful diff ? stackoverflow.com/edit-suggestions/1932
Jarrod did the html bit

2:24 AM

yeah Ill class that

See...just glancing at that, it isn't immediately evident what has changed. The start of the diff is buried in scroll. ):

@RebeccaChernoff click on the markdown diff

Did /review punish me for misclicking, or where did the "flag for attention" link go on the low quality posts tab? :P

@waffles, yes, but that isn't the default view (;

2:25 AM
nahh you were not punished
we should allow you to set it as default
we need a meta request to track and propose a way of doing that

@waffles since it's Markdown, shouldn't you set the font to fixed width?

note ... I am totally against adding an explicit user setting

If I ever get a display working on my monitor...and then the Gaming THC post...and then...

@YiJiang I did that ... and then Jeff's head almost exploded

@waffles Erhm...

2:27 AM
it does look pretty horrible in monospace
and I am subbing ' ' with anyway
so its an ok compromise

feels an uncontrollable urge to punch someone

@YiJiang @TimStone is right over there...

@RebeccaChernoff Hey, what did I do? :O

put a spell on my docking station ):

Alright, alright. I'll wave my hand at it, and we'll see if it magically works.
Did you try pressing the screen toggle button on the laptop itself? I don't see why it should make a difference, but..

2:35 AM
of course

Argh, argh, argh, argh, I lost a bunch of information my boss needs, this is bad news

Did you disconnect the docking station and blow on it original Nintendo-style?
3
@TheRenamedException :(

Maybe I'll have better luck in here helping @Rebecca...

I feel kinda stupid here...|:

2:38 AM
Because it's not working, or because you got it to work and it was something painfully easy that we can assume was the result of me waving my hands at it magic-like?

@RebeccaChernoff ok so to understand, you get no signal on the monitor?

@waffles I just gave it a try, and it doesn't look that bad, hrm...

@AidenBell Indeed.

@TimStone killall chrome

@AidenBell Ok, just checking.

Ok, must actually go and code some in some kludgefest PHP ... dirty

@YiJiang This bug is infuriating me.
@AidenBell Ick...good luck with that.

@Moshe alias people='moshe'

@TimStone What bug?

@TimStone - later Tim

Chrome lies and spits errors out to the console about something being undefined that clearly is not.

@YiJiang alias moshe='Zhang Yi Jiang' (Did I get that right?)
@TimStone Scope, my friend who is likely much more experienced than I.

@Moshe Zhang first, surnames always goes first for Chinese names - it's Zhang Yi Jiang

@YiJiang Ah, ok fixed.

3:04 AM
It's not a scope issue, it's a "The debugger clearly shows that the variable has a value at the same time it's whining it doesn't" issue, heh.

@TimStone Hmmm, when in doubt, don't trust the console
It's almost, but not exactly like the JavaScript environment your scripts will run in

@YiJiang Well, before it was actually breaking the script, so I had to believe that something was wrong...but now it seems to work despite that.

brb

Oh right, my Chrome updated. I forgot to check the userscript.

Hrm... how does a search for 'best' turn up 'good' and 'better'? Does SQL fulltext search do this sort of transformations?

3:08 AM
@RebeccaChernoff I just updated mine, and no dice. But if you F5 really fast repeatedly it sometimes works. >_>

@TimStone Urhm... /facepalm

@YiJiang There's a file that allows you to define synonyms, at least.

Okay, idea - delay the loading of livequery till window.load instead of window.onDOMReady
@TimStone Interesting, hmmm

@YiJiang Yeah, I think I tried that, but let me try it again to see if it makes a difference.
Nope, heh.
And of course, when I step through with the debugger from the very beginning, it doesn't happen.

Heh. The error trace says it came from master-chat.js o:

@YiJiang It makes so much sense now!

Sweet, a 9 foot tripod!

@Moshe Does it come with a ladder? :)

@GeorgeMarian I forgot to rent that. Borrowed a footstool, I have to find a taller one tomorrow.

3:24 AM
lol

ABC interviewed Mr. Mubarak.

What's the tl;dw version?

@GeorgeMarian Mr. Mubarak is not quitting now, he's leaving at the end of his term.
And, the Vice President said that they won't use force to evacuate the square.

@GeorgeMarian I'm not sure, I got distracted by the BP apology ad talking about getting back to shrimping that mysteriously appeared at the top of the screen.

Good to see some sense prevail, maybe.

3:34 AM
President Mubarak also was asked about President Obama's support and his coaxing for him to leave early.

@TimStone LOL
@Moshe Apparently, he wasn't moved, huh? heh

He responded that Mr. Obama is a good man but he does not understand the Egyptian culture and what would happen if President Mubarak leaves now.

@Moshe The entire country would throw a kegger?

Sound's like Mr. Mubarak is right.
@GeorgeMarian The Muslim Brotherhood would take over. Which, by the way, is probably not a good thing.

@Moshe Hmm, interesting.

3:36 AM
wonders where the asteroid is...

The President and the VP of Egypt are planning on changing the constitution and election law, and then reach out to opposition.
But he was hesitant to say if he felt betrayed by President Obama.

@Moshe Oh? What'd I miss? Because he tried to persuade him to step down early?

ABC made sure to flaunt the "dangerous trek through Cairo" that Christiana Amanpour had to take to get the palace.
@GeorgeMarian Yep.
@GeorgeMarian Exactly. It would probably effect the stability of the region.
G-d Willing, Mr. Mubarak will finish his term peacefully. But like I said, G-d willing.
@GeorgeMarian - Oh, this is an interesting looking article, about the intelligence community predicting this: haaretz.com/news/international/…
@GeorgeMarian btw, "kegger"?

@Moshe Interesting. That's a typical problem with intell, figuring out the timing.

@GeorgeMarian For sure.

3:42 AM
@Moshe A party. (Specifically, one with kegs of beer, but I was using it more to mean celebration.)

@GeorgeMarian No, well, yes, but it would turn into chaos. The point is that President Mubarak is trying to hand over power to someone responsible. Not a group that will likely terrorize the country or do other similar things.

@Moshe That makes sense, but the way things were handled seems...um..curios.

@GeorgeMarian What's curious?

Weird.

I know what it means, what is weird?

3:45 AM
Oh, lol.

@GeorgeMarian And you wrote the plural of Curio, btw.

Well, pulling the plug on the Internet connections for one.

@GeorgeMarian True. Again, it's likely a culture thing. What happens in my house is none of my neighbors' business unless I choose to tell them. Mr. Mubarak knows the media's position. He was trying to avoid the media from riling people up, perhaps.

@Moshe Yah, it sure looked wrong. lol
"ou" in words tends to screw me up. Or, I tend to screw them up.
@Moshe True, but if you're having an argument loud enough that your neighbors can hear and then you start drawing the shades and turning off the lights, people will wonder.

Although the internet thing was well timed. Reminds us what the US government is trying to empower themselves with.
@GeorgeMarian For sure.
switching to my iPhone

3:49 AM
@Moshe Yup. I read an article about a renewed push for the Internet kill switch on The Register a few days after.

Western culture and media have a sense of self entitlement though. Egypt has no obligation to let reporters in to report everything.
@GeorgeMarian wasn't just The Register, btw.

@GeorgeMarian There are times when I wish I had the ability to go stand before Congress, ask those people if they had any idea what they were debating, point out that they don't, and tell them to STFU, heh.

@Moshe Agreed. But, unless they want to go the hermit route, like North Korea, they're going to have to expect attention from the world when crap hits the fan.

Hah. @TimStone Well, Al Gore invented the internet. :P

@TimStone You and me, both.
I'm so glad "information superhighway" went out of use.

I think someone asked about the pricing the other day, $500.

@TimStone The horrid thing about it is that the tautology used to support the effort should be enough undo it. If having an Internet connection is so vital to the nation, why would we want to pull the plug?

Well the US built the Internet but it's very own "self entitlement" idea made it lose ownership of it. It's. Frankenstein.

@GeorgeMarian So we can save ourselves from all that cyber warfare going on, of course! When evil people are up in our tubes, we'll just shut the door. The next step will be to cover the country in a glass bubble, Simpsons-movie style.

@TimStone LOL

3:57 AM
Nite fellas.

@Moshe 'nite

G'night

@Moshe g'night

Hello @GeorgeMarian how's your pythoning going?

@AidenBell I'm getting familiar with Qt. In fact, i was hoping to get started on a quick word gathering app for my vocabulary list.
Alas, i keep getting distracted and I think I'm way too tired, but we'll see. :)

4:01 AM
@GeorgeMarian - Well stick at it, I recently discovered SL4A which is a Google labs project which puts a Python (and PHP, Perl, Javascript) interpreter on Android with APIs to make apps.

I'm also working on my blog/site, which I hope to launch soon. I think I may just have to go w/ some fee WP theme for the launch though. I have way too many projects going on.
@AidenBell nice!

@GeorgeMarian I know the feeling, I am snowed under and trying to clear some space for my projects but I have a ton of realllyyy boring horrid coding to do and I have procrastinated too long

I figure I'll be using Python for any complicated shell-scripting. Like this directory "merger" I hacked together in bash.

@GeorgeMarian I have found Python surprisingly good for web development

@AidenBell Yah, my job search is driving my nuts. Unfortunately, that doesn't help get me motivated.

4:04 AM
@GeorgeMarian well launching a blog sounds like a productive step to self promotion

@AidenBell I took a quick tour of Djano. I'm impressed. However, I don't think the host I'm planning on using provides python.

Don't forget your Stackoverflow careers upload

Yah, the blog will be mostly a tech blog. Wide ranging, as I have many intrerest (e.g. product design), but most tech.

@GeorgeMarian - I didn't like Django, preferred using mod_wsgi and splicing in middleware (like Beaker) and mixing-and-matching ... afterall Django is just a soup of standalone stuff

Ah, interesting.

4:06 AM
@GeorgeMarian - I have a long blog on my dev box, but never put it out there. I usually harp on about stuff I know little about lol

At this point, I will stick to the path of least resistance. That said, I tend to prefer more specialized/selected solutions, as well.
@AidenBell lol

Well, I usually look at big-framework type stuff and go "what is this crap" and hate it ... then roll my own with bits and bobs of libraries. But that's my C-programming head :{

Part of the motivation for my participation in programmers and money.se was to practice for the blog. Not that I'm going away once I launch it.

@GeorgeMarian you can use Google App Engine for Python hosting, btw. Now really, nite.

@AidenBell Yah, I looked at Zend Framework and said WTF? Then again, .NET is huge as well.

4:09 AM
@GeorgeMarian I hate .NET and Java too so ...

@Moshe Oh, yah. Thanks for the reminder.

@AidenBell shouldn't you be asleep at 4 am?
@GeorgeMarian what reminder?

@AidenBell I have mixed feelings about it. Some things are nice. Some things are horrid.

Q: For Python support, what company would be best to get hosting from?

Evan FosmarkI want to be able to run WSGI apps but my current hosting restricts it. Does anybody know a company that can accommodate my requirements?

@Moshe - Too much work, too little time, not enough brain power

@Moshe About Google App engine and python.

4:11 AM
Ah ok. Gnite really.

hehe g'night

Bye. closes safari mobile

question
is the rep cap
by day
or by 24 hs
?

4:13 AM
O.o
Yes.

UTC Day

day = 24 hrs
:)
Give or take. ;)

@Trufa by neptunian day

@GeorgeMarian ok, but you could see what I ent right?
@TimStone thank yo!
@AidenBell good to know!

@Trufa Yah, Tim got to it before I did. I was gonna drag it out a little, just because of the ambiguity.

4:15 AM
@GeorgeMarian ok ok my bad! did'nt think you were joking!

heh
That's usually a good assumption, if something doesn't sound right in a serious tone. :)

@GeorgeMarian on my defense you forgot the smiley face
:)

Fair enough.

You must never forget the simley faces
or people will shout at you
@GeorgeMarian just kidding though
I hate them
they kill sense of humor
the intelligent one at least

heh I try to cut back on my smiley faces., after I got teased by some friends for sounding girly.

4:17 AM
@GeorgeMarian on sec I got an interesting read for you
then

Though, in all honesty, I'm usually a very jovial guy.

So, the smiley faces were actually indicating my grins.

@GeorgeMarian I think you will like it

lol nice

4:19 AM
fml

So, a @--^--, would be inappropriate?

@AidenBell ??
@GeorgeMarian death penalty at least

@Trufa - coding through a smelly stagnant septic tank of PHP trying to wrestle some simplicity and grace into its bracket encrusted, super-coupled claws

Dang, it. I dunno how many times I've closed this tab by mistake today, because I forgot that the window order changed.

@AidenBell nicely put! (though that sucks of course)
@GeorgeMarian what?

4:22 AM
@AidenBell I took over some code from my brother. It's pretty rancid. Granted, he didn't have the time to work on it, hence why I took over that website for him.
@Trufa I've closed this browser tab using CTRL+W, thinking I was closing the browser window I had on my main screen.
I really need to get my delicious app done already, so I don't open and close so many browser windows.

@GeorgeMarian oh, those mistakes stress the hell out of me

@Trufa Yah, it's the whole unexpected thing. One of the reasons I like computers so much is I tell them what to do. Those occurances serve as reminder that when something effs up, it's probably my fault. :)
Gah, my spelling/typing is horrid tonight. And, I'm apparently confounding the spellchecker.
It keeps looking at me with that "say what?" look on it's face.

@GeorgeMarian - I am a firm believer that the first version to include all core functionality should be scrapped ... as it is usually code-while-learning-with-changing-specs and speed-over-cleanliness to deliver the functionality. Hence, while functional, unstable for long-term development.

@GeorgeMarian hahaha

@GeorgeMarian - Actually, that was quite sweeping. Sometimes should be in there somwhere

4:29 AM
@GeorgeMarian

@AidenBell Yah. That's part of the reason I'm going to start on my little vocab grabber first. That will initially be just a window dumping data into a CSV for import into a flash card program.

look at my description
:)
(I promise this is the last one)
hopefully

@GeorgeMarian I reccomend you chuck L vanity cards
they are actully excelent

just wanted to make that clear

The SKY is falling ... we are now requiring 2 approvals per edit on Stack Overflow (only) ... turns out this change did not make anything any slower ... and turns out people are not super blocked all the time

I am disappointed by the lack of drama here. If the sky is falling I expect drama!

@waffles But it's so much fun to complain about things before you know if there was any issue to begin with!

@TimStone true ... so true

@RebeccaChernoff What's this sky thing you speak of? I've never seen that thing ever since I'm stuck here with my computer in this basement

@RebeccaChernoff I like that I'm being mistaken for a moderator so frequently. ;)

4:45 AM
Gah. Gaming is taunting me. There were 9 candidates, so I got ready to schedule the THC assuming there won't be a primary. Now there's a 10th candidate....
So close...

Heheh, good turnout.

@TimStone where is you diamond?
I must admit I am one of those persons
I find it inevitable

Hahah :P

@Trufa careful, the ego mass is already quite dense around these parts ;P

@TimStone I wil make your campaigns for the next election, sockpuppet you until you win, that will make me not wrong ;)

4:49 AM
I may need to work on my rep a bit before then, heh. Right now this backlog of questions I've been meaning to answer is intimidating me.

@RebeccaChernoff I'm going to wait a few more days before suddenly nominating myself

Nominate yourself for WA. Pretty much a guaranteed diamond.
Heh.

@RebeccaChernoff What happens if there's no third candidate there?

Jeff kicks puppies ):

...Oh. Well then.

4:52 AM
I suspect that happens either way

@SomeBody: What would be the main post that explains the difference between down-votes and close vote/flag

> Consumers urged to step up wireless security - Treat Wi-Fi like toothbrushes, urges alliance

Err, no clue. You're making it sound like they're similar and there's just one minor difference between them. They're not similar though...

@YiJiang which of the script you forced me to install (joke) would make the text of a question have a dashed outline

5:05 AM
...Crap, still haven't done that README. Tonight!...Well, apparently this morning, same thing.

@Trufa @RebeccaChernoff's keyboard navigation script

@YiJiang thank you very much!! what is this outline good for?
@RebeccaChernoff ?

@Trufa To show you the currently selected question/post

that may have sounded agresive
not the idea
!!!

Oh, Greasemonkey fixed the issue where it thought text/html was a userscript, hooray! \o/

5:08 AM
@TimStone Yay!

I'm actually curious how they managed that, I tried to hack the extension but was having trouble figuring out how the hell to get the content type at that stage of the processing due to the Firefox API..

@YiJiang oohhh j and k
got it now!!
thats so cool!
@RebeccaChernoff thank you very mcuh

going to sleep now
good luck t'll

@TimStone thanks mod!

Hahah ;)

Excellent -- the bag of silica gel my new hard drive was packaged with burst in transit and filled my drive with little pebbles. It sounds like a rain stick when I shake it

O_o Wow, that sucks.

@TimStone Clearly you don't realize how awesome rain sticks are

I was just saddened by the fact that you didn't get a SSD, of course.

@RebeccaChernoff that looks bad
(the badges)

5:33 AM
huh?

@RebeccaChernoff I think it was a chat bug report about the badge circles being positioned too high in the onebox..

@TimStone Interesting userscript, hrm...
Although I'm not entirely sure if it needs to be that complex, hmm...

Define "complex"? :P

Well, 213 lines is a lot for what (I would image) to be a simple search-and-replace, probably with regex

The style crap takes up half of it I think, because I have to get the site-specific styles to override the #wmd-preview a style for each tag type.

5:44 AM
@Trufa Yes, there's a question on meta somewhere which explains

Alright, that's it... I give up debugging my own time normalization function and switched to using timeago instead

naah im not for this feature ... he probably rejected this because its too much of a pain in the arse to implement ... ( im guessing)

@Reno Sounds like it, but then it's [status-bydesign].

5:55 AM
Eh?
@PhilippeHarewood Hah, nice

He is just having a bad day perhaps :D

@Reno I don't care, I upvoted and left a comment. That's an oldie, btw. I was going to post, but found it first by searching.

It was probably rejected because starring questions is not so you can bookmark them -- that's what bookmarks are for. Starring questions is for if you see a question that isn't answered and think "hey, I want to know the answer to that"; now that it's starred you'll get notified of any answers. Starring answers doesn't have the same use case
People completely abuse/misuse the concept of favorited posts

@MichaelMrozek You raise valid points, but Jeff just declined, sans explanation.
@MichaelMrozek Indeed, but people abuse lots of SO. (Answers instead of comments, et al.)

@MichaelMrozek I know I do for some questions, mainly because I'm too lazy to organize my bookmarks, heh.

5:58 AM
answers instead of comments is because noobs dont have commenting rights ...

@Reno Right, I know.
BTW, @RebeccaChernoff - did you see this?

Yiddish Language

Proposed Q&A site for people interested in studying Yiddish, its proverbs and rich culture.

Currently in defintion.

At least he caved and lets mods convert them now. Next step: converting answers to questions

The number of people coming on SO for a quickie makes me sad :(

@Reno - I'd love to hear more about that, but I should be sleeping hours ago. Good {$time_of_day_in_your_timezone}.

NewsCorp saying they are "Ready to sell MySpace" is like me saying I'm "Ready to sell my iBook G3"

Hahah

To be fair, it's still the 33rd most popular site in the US, much larger than StackOverflow.

Wow, really? People still use MySpace?

Considering Facebook is being valued at $50 billion and Google is being turned down when they offer $6+ billion for little startups... maybe Newscorp can actually get their investment back.

I think myspace gets traffic from people googling classmates and stuff

it seems that I am unable to view questions that have pending edits

Might be of helpL: package com.android.filebrowser; import java.io.File; import java.util.ArrayList; import java.util.List; import android.app.A...

Damn that cat!

@YiJiang Probably a side effect of this:

Q: Don't show suggested edits that I can't approve

KipI'm seeing suggested edits to tag wikis on Stack Overflow which I do not have the ability to approve. Could you just not show me those?

@Benjol I know, I saw that he updated some stuff

I had a thought last night - while I was lying awake - atheism, religion, philosophy and sceptics should all be merged

@Benjol I don't think that's a particularly novel idea :)

6:34 AM
@MichaelMrozek, I think it would have the major advantage of no particular group being 'in charge'. Right now, atheism does feel a bit like a lot of backslappers asking themselves rhetorical questions.

Sigh.... I keep getting messages intended for the other George.

@GeorgeEdison I blame people on mobile devices. :)
Oh, and there is yet another George.

@GeorgeEdison Welcome to my world

Oy...what a fail.. I'm looking over the Zend Certification study guide (a beta of what's distributed w/ the new 5.3 test). It fails to mention that variable names can only start with an underscore or a letter which was one of the sample questions in the webinar about the cert and where I got the link to the document.

@GeorgeMarian Yes, about the PHP certification...heh.

6:42 AM
Too many tech certs are lame. =/

I actually took it several years ago. I failed. :( It asked a lot of stuff about PHP engine internals, which at the time I hadn't explored to the extent that makes me loathe them now, hahah.

> NOT INITIALIZING VARIABLES CAN POTENTIALLY LEAD TO REPETITIVE VARIABLE NAMES WHEN WORKING WITH MULTIPLE FILES
Huh?

I was a bit surprised, considering the study guide that they sold...you know, didn't mention anything about that stuff.

Oh, wow. That's really lame.

Going there for valentine's day

6:45 AM
I thought the PHP one was particularly mocked for its terribleness

@TimPost Wow, that's really cool
@GeorgeMarian Er...wha?

@TimStone Precisely my question. /headdesk

Is it "Identify which part of this sentence doesn't belong"? >_>

lol
It's a pre-test.

@YiJiang yeah fixed it an hour ago on dev ... just trying to get a few more fixes in

6:47 AM
If you don't go WTF?, rather you just memorize it, you're screwed. :)

Yeah, I'm trying to remember what was on the test back when I took it. That was a really long time ago (Think having to ask hosts to switch you to PHP5), hopefully they've changed it a lot since then. I did well on the prep tests, just not the main event.
@waffles Always one step ahead, heheh. :P

@TimStone Yeah, it's been changed quite a bit. The 5.3 test doesn't have an questions about the differences between PHP 4 &5, for example.

Ah, nice.
"The difference between PHP 4 & 5 is I won't be using PHP 4"

Mark this day and time. There are ZERO moderator flags on SO.

They say the focus of the test is now about analysis instead of memorization.

There, I fixed that for you :P

@MichaelMrozek lol

You see, it's a vicious cycle. Children cause heavy drinking, and heavy drinking leads to pot bellies.

@Kragen I answer my own questions :p

6:57 AM
@TimPost And pot bellies lead to children...?

@YiJiang bug fix deployed

Brrrr. Cold. I'm not hungry but I want to go out and buy something warm to eat.

Ooc, does SO have any sort of automated tests that get run before a deploy?

@waffles Is it a known bug that voting sometimes results in the 'An error has occurred message even though the vote registered just fine?

Q: Rotate text with CSS/Javascript/Jquery

user602760I have tried this to rotate text to 270 Degree -webkit-transform: rotate(-90deg); -moz-transform: rotate(-90deg); filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.BasicImage(rotation=3);

Hehehe, shakes head

@YiJiang That happened to me the other day, but I was in the process of leaving the page, so I didn't get a chance to try and figure out what happened.

Q: Top bad practices in PHP

AlexandraI've learned from Stack Overflow that some of the code I've been writing so far is considered "bad practice". Like using tons of global variables, create_function() etc. I'm curious to know more about this. Post examples of bad practices in PHP and why. Please only post one bad practice per answ...

Less entertaining than hoped

Er. I assumed that was two years old, not 10 hours old. How did that stay open?

Ahh, stop it, you're killing it!
Some of SO's most popular questions are the same kind

@DanGrossman I'm well aware -- they should die too

You're anti-SOIS

7:26 AM
SO's "most popular" posts are almost universally bad
I'm pretty sure SOIS hates them too

I am going to ask the board of directors to ban you from their servers for trying to kill their page views and ad revenue
Jeff will be overruled by his investors
A heated argument will ensue, and phones will be smashed

@MichaelMrozek They are also usually a pretty good read though - I get why we would want to close them, but deleting them seems a tad harsh

It will all be caught on tape and posted to YouTube by an intern

Im just glad I can see deleted questions

@Kragen They're a pretty good read on reddit, too, or PSE. I don't know why we can't make the distinction between "interesting" and "belongs on SO"; they're not the same

7:29 AM
"Attracts new, experienced programmers to SO unlike anything else" = encouraged

"Let's all whine about PHP" is absolutely not the way to attract experienced programmers to SO. It's completely the opposite

It's the way to attract experienced PHP coders to SO that wouldn't otherwise know about the site... and it's SO's 3rd top tag

Besides the fact that SO sucks at list posts, and always has, you really thing a post listing all of PHP's flaws is a way to attract experienced PHP coders?

Yes, though it's not a list of language flaws, it's a list of bad practices

...you're wrong

7:31 AM
but hey alexandra is pretty cute

It's the opposite of Jeff's policy, which is "ask expert questions, get expert users"
This is "ask a question anyone can answer even if they're never used PHP before"

@MichaelMrozek I'm not saying that they belong on SO or that new questions shouldn't be promptly closed and locked, but the answers that are already around do belong to the community - There are now lots of questions with plenty of votes and quality answers that were just blanket deleted by a moderator with no input from the community.

Good answers to a "bad programming practices" are going to come from the same people that write to TheDailyWTF and other blogs for professional programmers... programmers that have enough experience to recognize bad practices...

@Kragen Then I think you're having a different argument
@DanGrossman Except the real expert programmers we're trying to attract were sick of those posts before SO even existed, and don't want to keep running into them here
Just because they know the answer doesn't mean they're interested in the post

7:35 AM
I'd say it should be moved to PSE, but in a true fit of irony, I think they would probably close it

I vote for the 4th place: polls.stackoverflow.com :)
aka runoff.stackoverflow.com :)

@Benjol I was happier when that's what PSE was supposed to be :)

@MichaelMrozek, I'm actually quite serious, because all of the SE sites run into the polls/list problem. People WANT to ask these questions, that's why they (the questions) keep coming. The problem isn't that SO isn't the right place, the problem is that Q&A isn't the right format
Think Canute. Move the throne ;)

@Benjol I am too; PSE started off as exactly what you describe, a place to let people go wild with their poll questions so they could leave us alone. Then SOIS decided they didn't like the free-for-all and locked it down during the beta

I'm going to invest in SOIS's next financing round just for a board seat so I can change the rules as I please.

7:41 AM
@MichaelMrozek, yes, but as I say, the problem isn't just a question of where, it's a question of format. Q&A just doesn't cut it.

I don't see what's so bad about poll / subjective questions - people clearly enjoy both asking and participating in them and they are easy enough to avoid if you don't like them.

@Benjol I think most people agree that the SO engine isn't a good fit for poll questions, we just got tired of arguing and said "you know what, fine, if you insist, here's a special SE site where you can go nuts"
@Kragen They're bad because the whole SO engine is designed around "ask a question, get answers, upvote the best ones, accept the one that solved your problem". Half of those steps don't make sense for subjective/poll questions

Obviously you don't want the site to be overrun with them for exactly the same reason that I have no interest in PSE, but I do think that the occasional popular question that many people gets involved in is good for the community overall.

(This is ignoring the way they destroy metrics like post quality)

@Kragen It's a question of rep too. In fact I think it's entirely a question of rep. Getting thousands of rep for cracking jokes works against the quality of the site

7:44 AM
@Benjol Well, CW gets around that, even though it's not supposed to
It doesn't get around all the posts with 500 upvotes being subjective though

@MichaelMrozek, it gets around it too late though

That's what CW is for - provide the means to have these questions without the rep issue sneaking in.

@Kragen It's completely not what CW is for. It is what it gets used for

Anyway, I stand by my suggestion. These questions keep coming, and no one will stop them. Closing them generates bad blood. PSE wasn't a solution because Q&A isn't the right format. Solution: polls.x.com Though I guess it's not gonna be very high on the priorities :)

Besides, many poll questions genuinely are really useful - for example its handy to know (for example) what peoples favourite text editor is, or what their favourite javascript debugger is as a rough metric of quality.

7:46 AM
@Kragen And if we could seriously say "ok, once a month we'll let somebody go for it", I'd be fine with it, but that's not what happens. People see "Top bad practices in PHP" and think "wow, look how popular that was. I'll go post 'Top bad practices in Java'", and if you try to close that one they flip out and point to the PHP one as evidence that those questions are ok. This is what happened with the "hidden features" posts

Case in point:

Q: What is the single most influential book every programmer should read?

NotMyselfIf you could go back in time and tell yourself to read a specific book at the beginning of your career as a developer, which book would it be? I expect this list to be varied and to cover a wide range of things. EDIT: Before adding a another book/answer, please search for it first and upvote ...

@Kragen We're looping around to something we already said -- "useful" and "belongs on SO" are not the same

True, but "useful" should definitely be an influencing factor in "belongs on SO"

@MichaelMrozek, more precisely: "useful" and "belongs on Q&A"

Subjective questions are questions. We ask them. Their answers should be searchable. I want book recommendations from programmers!

7:53 AM
So there are around 2000 new questions every day on StackOverflow

did you mean programmers SE ;)

@DanGrossman Book recommendations (if unique) are typically welcome on programmers SE

Programmers.SE has around 20 new questions per day according to the same query

Why do I have a pending edits count on a site where I don't have the rep to see the linked page?

7:58 AM
Sounds like a bug. META REP!

meta is scary and incestuous, I only (ab)use its chat room
I also lost my ability to approve a pending edit on SO apparently... I approved one and it still shows as pending edit(1)
pending-edit stuff is all buggy

@DanGrossman It was changed earlier today so it takes two approvals (on SO only)

@DanGrossman 2 approvers are needed now

even over 2k rep? reverted to the old behavior?

Well, you can't approve at all if you're under 2k rep

8:02 AM
it was that 2k+ could singlehandedly approve pending edits, since we can edit without approval in the first place, but there was a limit to how much rep this would award any single user per day

They changed SO because edits were getting approved pretty much instantly, even if they should've been rejected. They also changed it so the indicator in the top bar only shows up if there's 5+ posts waiting

now we're back to the situation where i'm blocked from fixing a question even though if there was no pending edit i'd be able to fix it myself

I can see my own suggested edits in the top bar too :) -> Page not found...

In theory; in practice I don't think they last very long on SO. I just watched one get two approval votes in less than 20 seconds

I've got mixed feelings about opening edits like that. The majority of the edits that I see are good quality, but there are a considerable amount of "edited just cuz I could" edits

8:04 AM
@TimPost There are a bunch that fix "wrong" answers to be "right", which is not generally a good idea

I've found a <cough>comments</cough> work around for the character limit :)

I liked the "everyone without rep can suggest edits ONLY if the question is old" idea
let drive-bys suggest fixes to old stuff nobody else is tending to, don't let them randomly edit new stuff without rep to prove they know what they're doing

@MichaelMrozek I haven't seen any like that, but I'm usually working on flags instead.

I stopped following flags closely when they added comment flags; I need to change my script to filter them out

@Benjol Only now? Geesh, which one is it?

8:07 AM
@YiJiang, you won't be able to see it. it was a one-character typo on atheism that was bugging me, so I <!-- the system wants stupid, I provide stupid -->

@Benjol Aww, don't do that. Although that's not as bad as the guy that just added "xxxxxxxx" to the bottom of a post

@MichaelMrozek, there's nothing more frustrating than a link saying "come on, edit me", then a "Na!, your edits too short, come back when you've grown up"

I know, I hate those character limits

I don't want to see edit links if I can't edit, sorry.

Hrm, wish I could see deleted questions. One just got posted that I'm sure was already asked earlier tonight, but I can't find it now.

8:10 AM
Same here

You can't search deleted questions anyway, sadly

how much SO money does it take to see them :P

10k rep can see deleted questions / answers

Oh my, I'll be spending my vacation inside of an angry fruit salad: puertoprincesahotel.com

The weather and flora/fauna there just looks like my home-town
I am impressed

There are lot of places here where you can have a great time and good lodging really cheap
The Chocolate Hills are an unusual geological formation in Bohol, Philippines. According to the latest accurate survey done, there are 1,776 hills spread over an area of more than . They are covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season, hence the name. The Chocolate Hills are a famous tourist attraction of Bohol. They are featured in the provincial flag and seal to symbolize the abundance of natural attractions in the province. They are in the Philippine Tourism Authority's list of tourist destinations in the Philippines; Description The Chocolate Hills is a rollin...
That's another natural wonder
Nobody is quite sure why they formed that way. It's like giant ants inhabited the world long ago.

Four legends explain the formation of the Chocolate Hills. The first tells the story of two feuding giants who hurled rocks, boulders, and sand at each other. The fighting lasted for days, and exhausted the two giants. In their exhaustion, they forgot about their feud and became friends, but when they left they forgot to clean up the mess they had made during their battle, hence the Chocolate Hills
totally explains it
it was just a result of a epic giant battle
The last legend is about a gluttonous giant named Miguel that eats everything in his path. One day he came to a plain. He saw a beautiful young woman named Adrianna. To win her affection, he needed to lose weight. So he excreted everything he ate. In the end, his fecal matter covered the land and he won Eng's affection.
this is quite good too .. giant poop

Two hours after receiving the BBC World Service's schedule for this week, I recieved another email telling me that half the programs will be cancelled and replaced with live coverage of the unrest in Egypt

@YiJiang Things not looking good for Egypt :(

If I click the 1 (edits for approval) the link's broken

8:30 AM
@oraclecertifiedprofessional It's a bug; it's only supposed to show up for 10k users
Did Dan ever file that?
Oh, somebody else did just now

but: the link is "http://meta.stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits"
if i change it to "http://meta.stackoverflow.com/review/suggestededits" (remove the hyphen) it works

its visible to me too , but i not bothered about it

@oraclecertifiedprofessional It doesn't work, it just goes to the base review page. You'd get the same if you went to meta.stackoverflow.com/review/asdf or meta.stackoverflow.com/review
The tab you're trying to get to is only accessible to 10k users

ok, just making sure
i didn't want to have access to things I don't deserve

I'm surprised it took this long to get a bug report, honestly

Argghga, another one-letter typo that I'm itching to correct but I won't be allowed to :(
@MichaelMrozek, I'm refraining just for you, in case you wondered :)

Dont the japanese and koreans have any questions ? Ive rarely spotted them asking questions on SO. But they do churn out mind blowing stuff
I reckon they are bad at english, but then how do they read specs and documentation ... ? Its like they never mess up or they have a secret japanese internet or something

@All, re: discussion on polls, just rediscovered this question:

AlexandraI've learned from Stack Overflow that some of the code I've been writing so far is considered "bad practice". drumroll it is all bad practice ... thank you, i'm here all night

@AidenBell We already argued about that post for about a half hour :)

@MichaelMrozek - Yea, well, you smell :P Thought I would get in on the action

9:11 AM
highly uncool
no I don't want to install a bengali font

@AidenBell It was a mistake, he thought SO accepted non-english questions. And it was closed 10 hours ago

gotta love that answer

@MichaelMrozek - you climb out of bed on the wrong side? I was just noting it, not demanding closure or arguing its case :S

You said "highly uncool", I assumed that meant you wanted it dealt with, which already happened

No, the fact it had even been posted

9:20 AM
Well, I would say "it was a mistake, he thought SO accepted non-english questions", but I might get accused of climbing out of bed on the wrong side

k, this is going to get recursive. I had little sleep, so probably me lol

@MichaelMrozek, I think the confusion was genuine and understandable

relax

I've had no sleep, so I should probably go deal with that before I talk to people anymore

GO TO BED BOTH OF YOU!!
:)

9:21 AM
Then we both should probably not converse lol
Anyway, I bid you all farewell as I have to code.

@AidenBell before you leave are you from london proper?

@Reno - no Manchester

ah :)

@Reno - so I better go before the spontaneous urge to kick off and chuck a can of stella at you takes hold hehe
(I hope you are from the UK to get the joke :S )

:D yeah im not , british humour is complicated i reckon

9:29 AM
self humour fail

no its not you, my puny brain cannot comprehend british humour thats all :P

@Reno, there's not much to understand, just lots of things to know :)

Q: Suggestion: Maybe add "trolling" to the list of reasons a comment can be flagged?

@YiJiang trolled

This is so weird - it's clearly not a duplicate, yet somehow both Jeff and Marc think so, hrm...

9:34 AM
@YiJiang, well I guess part of it is duplicate: whether argumentative is a duplicate of trolling?

Ooh, 3500 on meta and 6499 on SO, there's not much I can do to gain one rep though, I guess :(

well what can i say

@Reno - you reminded me of that vid
He is what people regard a typical person from Manchester, UK

@Benjol Not really, since you can only flag a comment for 'offensive', while closing a question for being 'argumentative', those are two different things

9:36 AM
Stereotyping of course

Well I guess neither of them are around to point that out.
very old though...

@Benjol Yeah, I noticed

-_-
stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits = all tag wikis i cant approve/reject, yet the site toolbar is screaming at me that there are edits waiting!

@Dan, I don't see anything in the site toolbar, just in the tab

9:42 AM
I'm sorry, but I just can't parse the edits, whats with the first one, there wasn't any text? (stackoverflow.com/edit-suggestions/2014)

That's how I interpreted it. It was a tag wiki with no description, he wrote one.
> There is no tag wiki for this tag. stackoverflow.com/tags/google-apps/info

@Dan, ok, I see. Funnily, I don't see that counter in chrome, but I do in firefox. weird

@Benjol What the heck, who approved that!?

I hope nobody

ah, it's because it's moving all the time!

9:44 AM
> Edit was approved 40 secs ago by Péter Török, paxdiablo

That's just advertising, pure and simple

yeah, it looks like he copied the feature list from a google page

Somebody just approved it >_>
Two, in fact

I'll propose a new edit!

I just don't get how 2x1k = 2k :)

@DanGrossman Hopefully that would get approved - mine deleting the [google-chrome] tag wiki did: stackoverflow.com/posts/4701060/revisions

Q: Differentiate between employees and moderators

DoriMy understanding of who has diamonds: All moderators have diamonds on the sites they moderate Trilogy moderators also have diamonds on MSO SOIS employees have diamonds everywhere they're needed ⋯⋯⋯ Right now, there are a lot of new diamond moderators across the network, with more being added...

@Benjol SE 1.0 sites had diamonds and double diamonds

@YiJiang I need to update SEDE ... will do so next week

@waffles Think I'm nearly done with the query plan thing too btw

@Kragen wow ! can not wait to add your patch to trunk

It doesn't work in IE7 though :-(

10:35 AM
@waffles, I'd quite like to try implementing 'click on column header to sort', do you think that would be complicated?

@Benjol I've done that too
(Sorry :-p)

@Benjol the grid actually supports that ... it should be fairly simple to patch

@Kragen, ok :(

@Kragen :)

It wasn't too tricky - I've not tested it with any large data sets yet though.

10:36 AM
@Kragen, well the datasets can't get that large anyway, can they?

max data set is 2000 rows anyway so it is not a big deal

Currently it's quite difficult to select text from the results too, the table seems to think I'm trying to do something else, but that something else isn't possible (dragging rows?)

Yeah, not sure how to fix that one

I guess there's always results to text

I guess, kinda feels like a cop-out though :-p

10:45 AM
have a look at the SlickGrid samples ... they may have some ideas of how to do that

As an aside, I wonder if these questions ought to be just nuked: data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/s/857/… (perhaps adding a 'no favourites' check too)

Look at the comment thread. Why do I get a here we go again feeling?

I think Jeff really wanted a mod that isn't from MO
I'm glad it has happened

11:56 AM
Has there actually been a case where a moderator was elected and did nothing?
I find that very difficult to conceive.

@TimPost apparently that's what's happening on Maths

sometimes a moderator becomes unavailables (example: TheTXI), but that is very different

:Submits an interesting SO question to Hacker News, awaits badges for views on a question to come rolling in:

The Math elections ended on Dec 17th
Robin Chapman was last seen on Math on Jan 10th
and last active on Dec 20th
on Meta he was last seen Dec 17th and last active Dec 9th

random aside: when I went to uni I studied under him...

12:03 PM
I thought he lived in the US.

Robin Chapman? No; ex.ac.uk

I hope nothing happened to him :/

bah, I hoped it was a real question :P

it probably would be [a real question] on prog.SE
@TimPost seen on mathoverflow 2 hours ago

12:11 PM
@MarcGravell Wow! When?

"wow! when?" what?

ex.ac.uk. looking at your profile, it was 5-6 years after me :)

I was at Exeter '96 thru '99 - gotta love the Laver building

Maybe he got confused and thinks math.stackexchange.com got its own domain at mathoverflow.net

I hope 'the right balance (TM)' can be found on that site.

12:12 PM
he's now dutifully moderating the wrong site

@MarcGravell '91 - '95, me. MEng FWIW (i.e. not much to me now :)

@MarcGravell To be fair he also hasn't been active at all after Dec 17th on MO
I wish MO's meta had a way to find all posts by a user

I started on MMath, but decided "to heck with that" and swapped to BSc
@badp indeed - the 2 hours ago could be a machine in his office.
I doubt I could even read my uni notes now - the course was fine etc, simply I haven't touched that type of stuff since leaving

by the way, some were wondering what is MathOverflow going to do
I think this is an authoritative reply:

@MarcGravell My notes hit the bottom of a wheelie years ago.

12:20 PM
@MarcGravell I know what you mean - any time I try to do anything mathsy I just can't remember anything
I probably should have swapped to a BSc - I got my worst results in the final year

I'm fair if that "math" is "find the logic holes in this or prove there are none" - but if it is "given this polar-spherical differential field equation in descreet parts, identify the stable states in terms of phi eta and iota, in terms of the inverse hamiltonian conjugate" (I'm just throwing vaguely remembered terms around there)

@badp Ouch; "Starting from scratch", one 'developer'. I'm not a mathematician, but I think I can work out the result..

@MarcGravell You should totally drop that and use jQuery Math plugin.

$("eq .stable").φηι()
> The toolchain I'm using, scala+maven+lift is a lot to digest. It's not impossible that me and Dave Penneys, a graduate student at Berkeley, are the only mathematicians who've programmed in scala. On the other hand, everyone can write python :-)
yay elitism.

@badp "I have to admit I haven't looked at all at the OSQA codebase". I guess that's one way of starting from scratch :)

sorry I made a typo
∮("eq .stable").φηι()

12:30 PM
hah

@Benjol I hope for MO they have a working solution by april :)

@badp, yeah, that deadline does make things look a bit ... bad. I've been wondering about Moms4Mom too, they want to migrate, but I'm not sure they'll have the time (new baby in December...)

@badp Why april?

@Kragen wasn't April the 1 year deadline for successful SE 1.0s?
maybe I remember incorrectly

How many are actually left?

@badp That's my recollection too, though I don't think that J&J/SOIS are monsters to the point of pulling the plug on the very first minute of 1 April (except as a joke, of course :)
@badp Yeah, I know, I was pulling in the other direction there...

Oh - I hadn't realised that they were running on StackExchange 1.0 - it looks really different, hadn't realised how much it has changed.

@Kragen, AFAIK, the only ones of note are Mathoverflow and Moms4Mom

The difference (behind the scenes) between the SE 1.0 system and the SE 2.0 system is night and day

Now you just need to try an OSQA site and you'll have the full picture @TimPost :P

12:39 PM
I've been meaning to try it, but every time I find time to do so, I get lazy

@TimPost, to be honest, if Anton, Scott & Tammy could be 'benevolent dictators for life', I'm pretty certain there'd be no problem with moving to SE2.0

I was thinking of setting one up just for virtualization, because it doesn't look like the area51 proposal will get traction

@Benjol The MO admin wants full db access.
Robert was clear that it's not going to happen.

@badp reasonable as an escape route

Eek, I thought it was just some differences regarding the latex implementation

12:41 PM
@badp What would full db access gain them?

Oh, and they want to keep ownership of the domain too
1 min ago, by Benjol
@badp reasonable as an escape route

@badp reasonable as an escape route too

Presumably, if things went 'bad', he could open another site using a clone and keep the content / users / history

@TimPost, but no votes?
And no url?

@Benjol i counted that as part of 'history'

12:43 PM
Surely they could do that anyway from the data dumps

@Kragen, you don't get who voted. It's true that you might not need that to recreate a new db, but I'm not sure
Just look at meta.math, those guys are paranoid about 'commercial forces beyond their control'

Oh true

And as I hinted in my not-very-appreciated question, SE1.0-2.0 hasn't done anything to reassure them

Thats pretty understandable - its tough to go from having complete control to no control.

@Benjol Once you migrate, lock voting on migrated posts
sure, it doesn't help that SOIS is having trouble producing data dumps

12:46 PM
@badp, well, I guess you'd have the post votes as well, so you could allow voting to continue... though that would mean people could vote twice. dunno

Good morning everyone

@badp, anyway, that is why I asked my democracy question and why I think that the way things are presented is extremely sensitive and important. But I won't start again :)

I need a YouTube to animated gif converter, it's blocked here :(

@DanGrossman sweet!

That was quick

hm, idea...
imgur's location!

1:44 PM
@DanGrossman Much less accurate.

user153011
@TheRenamedException WHAT? rchern = Rebecca Chernoff?

Kev
@TheRenamedException - I think using another chat room for the digest seems like a lot of hard work for you guys. I'm guessing you can't correct entries in the timeline?

@Nyuszika7H duh
r-ebecca chern-off

1:45 PM
@Nyuszika7H you didn't know that?

@TheRenamedException Nice :)

user153011
@TheRenamedException nope, I didn't know that

maybe this formula isn't right for this projection... x = [(longitude + 180) + (imwidth / 360)], y = [((latitude * -1) + 90) * (imheight / 180)]

@Kev exactly!

@Nyuszika7H Where have you been? :)

1:46 PM
@Kev the reason I chose it originally was because I could copy and paste permalinks which would onebox, which was much easier than copying and pasting actual text and relinking

@TimPost *˙ɥʇıʍ ʎɐʍɐ ʇǝb noʎ ʇǝןן ןıʍ xoq ʇnduı ǝɥʇ ʇɐɥʍ buızɐɯɐ s,ʇı

But, Yi Jiang created an awesome script for us!
@Kev Candidate Kev answered : @TheRenamedException - I think using another chat room for the digest seems like a lot of hard work for you guys. I'm guessing you can't correct entries in the timeline?

@badp I'd like to see that with the RTL thing at the same time :)

@Benjol The RTL thing is there.

@badp That works in comments too

Kev
1:47 PM
@TheRenamedException - how handy!...if you could insert into different parts of the timeline I think it'd be a winner

@TimPost I'm aware.

@Kev That's why @MichaelMrozek suggested a meta post instead
A meta post is now easy. before, it would have been a pain

user153011
‮THIS is RTL text. @badp's text is upside down.

but with this script, I can click, copy, paste, and it becomes really nice

user153011
Is your name highlighted there? ‮@TheRenamedException

1:50 PM
@Nyuszika7H weird, it is!!

@Nyuszika7H Can't you do both? :)

Kev
@TheRenamedException - yeah...I think the use of chat like that is maybe overloading it's purpose in life. Also a meta post would be more visible. I'm still not sure people are getting the chat thing

user153011
@Benjol Maybe. Is there any Unicode control character for upside down text?

@Nyuszika7H upside down text, you mean?

@Kev so the questions now are: Are the digests useful and do we keep making them? If so, do we use a meta question? Do we answer the Town hall question or make a new question? What should the format be, one TH question per meta answer or one large answer, and what should the "template" for Yi Jiang's script look like?

user153011
1:51 PM
@Benjol yeah :P

and of course: what else am I not thinking of? Other comments / suggetsions / etc :-)

@Nyuszika7H, nope that's another trick...

user153011
‮¡pןɹoʍ 'oןןǝH

@Nyuszika7H nice nice :)

user153011
I've used Glitter Graphics's Upside Down Text Generator.

Kev

@TheRenamedException - doh

@Kev that was my magnum opus meta question :-)

user153011
‮˙sʎɐʍ ɥʇoq uı pǝsɹǝʌǝɹ 'ʇxǝʇ ɔıʇdʎɹɔ ǝɯos sı sıɥʇ pu∀

@TheRenamedException - yes that's quite a post. I read the last bit :)

@Nyuszika7H And yet I can still read it with relative ease.

1:54 PM
If you guess it, your name will be @TheRenamedException, and his name will be your name.

@Nyuszika7H nobody starred any name suggestions, so @Zypher won't be renaming me ;-)

I was hoping to see another badge awarded, but I'm running out of battery and tired... sleep time

1:58 PM
@DanGrossman 2 minutes before I have to start working!
Quick, anyone know where I can get 4GB sticks of PC3-8500 RAM?
:-)
ok worktime!

2:18 PM
@TheRenamedException crucial.com
That's where I got my 4GB sticks of PC3-10666 RAM from. :-P

Yeah I just found it there, expensive! More than I expected
dealram.com didn't have it, I guess because it wasn't a good deal, LOL
by the way @Chris, your name has sounded familiar to me, are you on the Triangle Internetworkers or the TriLUG lists? I'm trying to remember where I might know you from other than SO

2:44 PM
So far two of us have made it in, I've heard from two more that say "nope, working from home" ... apparently people hate snow
omg, I did my taxes last night, I owe 1100 :(

@drachenstern Uggggggg that sucks

well so it would only be $50 if my wife worked instead of getting SSI. But because I make so much, all her SSI is taxable. So technically she owes 1100 :p but that's just sillyness.

I just had a dream about a SMS conversation with a girl that currently is ignoring me...
I HATE RELATIONSHIPS

:-(
They can be especially difficult at your age @Tyler...

3:00 PM
tell me about it..

3:11 PM
By the way, in all of this anonymous edit rigmarole
we forgot the departure of our friend
it isn't. I fail forever.
SE shows both edit and retag if you are in the right rep area.

@drachenstern Did you use the jQuery tax plug-in?
3

@Moshe have a star

@TylerChacha you do know that if you have the need to vomit on us with your problems we'll listen cos that's what we do for each other
2
@Moshe no. I wish.

Okay, so retagging proposals done through the proposed edit interface go through the queue and get you reps, even if you have enough rep to retag directly.

@TheRenamedException Thank you.

3:14 PM
@drachenstern I'll come in later and do that...

@TylerChacha Oh @Tyler, there is a jQuery relationships plug-in.
jQuery.com should be oneboxed!

nah, that would be silly

@drachenstern Just in this room, you know, an easter egg.

that would make it even worse
there should be no room-specific easter eggs
You ... don't write much code do you? :p

@drachenstern might, might not. But how could anything related to jQuery make things worse?

3:17 PM
But yeah, I just had a dream about talking to this person. I think it was the happiest I've been all week...

@drachenstern Depends, but there are room specific easter eggs on SE already. Root Access has Clippy, etc.

@TylerChacha keep up with that talk and I'll declare you depressed and send you to a shrink :p

@TylerChacha I wouldn't complain, if I were you. I have dreams about coming to work. Then I wake up and get really confused about whether I'm going to be late getting to work.

@Moshe what? get out!

@drachenstern Nope. Ask @PopularDemand.

3:18 PM
@PopularDemand oy, I'm not sure if that's as bad as me dreaming of the code I should've written / code I didn't write that was giving me shit

@drachenstern I'm past depressed. Since I met this person I've lost 25 pounds just from loss of apetite..

@TylerChacha Can you work up the courage to strike up a conversation?
@TylerChacha :-(

@drachenstern Warning: Spoiler Alert:

Q: What Easter Eggs do the chat sites have?

MosheAccording to @balpha, he SE chat sites may have individual Easter eggs, depending on the site. If you find them, please post. Edit: Because it's so easy to make this stuff up, a screenshot as proof would be nice. (Although Photoshop ain't that hard either...)

@TheRenamedException Well the message I received from her is "back off plz"..

@TylerChacha oh.

3:19 PM
it is complicated..

@TylerChacha that's not depressed, that's something else. I would likely call it angst. oh, that's not a good message at all...

We had this great friendship for like 2 months, and in one 4 day weekend it all changed...

My experience says that when a girl says that that you should learn to give up on her and move on, but that's my experience, and you're not living in my shoes, so I can't tell you what's right for you

I think I liked something on her Facebook page and she got mad...

@drachenstern I can second this, and also sadd, easier said than done sometimes :-)

3:20 PM
but if she said "back off plz" ... :\
:(
@TheRenamedException most things are easier said than done ;)

@drachenstern this is true...

@drachenstern You know what they say: "Walk a thousand miles in your friend's shoes before judging him/her. That way, they'll be a thousand miles away and without shoes!"
@drachenstern Depends who is saying and who is doing.

@Moshe ok, that deserves a star, if only because it's true and it made me crack up

@drachenstern Thank you. bows again

@Moshe HAHA, I don't believe I have ever hear anyone say that, but I think I will now start :-)

3:21 PM
@TheRenamedException oh that's old

In any case, it is really hard to get over her because I see her everyday...
and sometimes have to talk with her..

@drachenstern well, I don't get out much :-)

ok, E.SE time ... where'd that quote originate

I'm too lazy to scroll backwards and find out who "her" is, so I'll assume @RebeccaChernoff
5

@MichaelMrozek no, a girl that he wants to talk to but she doesn't want to talk to him

3:23 PM
@drachenstern Sounds like @RebeccaChernoff to me

@TylerChacha I know this situation well, it sucks.

3:24 PM
@TylerChacha then double ouch

You can see my problem..

@TheRenamedException yeah, so what does his script do that my suggestion didn't cover? :p
@TylerChacha indeed, we all can

@drachenstern um, sorry, what's this now?

my "novel" as you so eloquently put it the other day ;)

@drachenstern Well, I have a citation from Ethics of the Fathers, although I don't have an exact timeline. I can ask.

3:28 PM
@drachenstern Oh! I totally forgot to read that!!!

yesterday, by drachenstern
What you need ... is a bit of jQuery that does the following:
:p

But, I decided a meta question would be the best way to get everyone's advice.

It sounds like he tackled it much better than I

@drachenstern please stand by

Also, my point was a way to quickly grab messages from here and drop them into a metaQ

3:29 PM
@drachenstern Let's not get violent, now, shall we?

(and convince my boss I am working for me. k thx)
yesterday, by drachenstern
all-in-all, that sounds like too much work, so I'm not gonna do it :p

@TheRenamedException Tempted to retag this [rchern-diamonds] to reflect her current status....

That's exactly what @YiJiang did, pretty much
it's awesome!!!
@PopularDemand LOL. That might take the heat from Jeff off me :-D

@MichaelMrozek Saw that earlier today. It would have been hilarious, three months ago. Now it's just makes me think "what odd timing."

3:33 PM
bu to answer your question @drachenstern, I am looking for specifically: 1. are the town halls useful? 2. Do meta questions work better than chat? 3. If so, what should the "template" be? One question per answer? One giant answer? etc
I just want everyone's input before I do the next one

oh I knew that's what you were looking for, and I think MSO are better

or, anyone else does, if someone else would rather do it :-)

@drachenstern - Have you posted a question on E.SE?

@Moshe working on it, trying to get the wording, and someone else is asking for my time (he signs my checks ;) )

@drachenstern I agree. Just looking for specifics

3:34 PM
@TheRenamedException What is this talk of a script and the MSO transcripts?

@TheRenamedException and yet, I had it 60% scoped out when my computer crashed yesterday with a BSOD

@Moshe curl up by the fire and read my novel:

@drachenstern Haha, Windows User.

@drachenstern LOL! That sucks

@Moshe hey watch your tongue. I've had plenty of kernel panics too
and I've induced a few of each manually on multiple systems

3:35 PM
@drachenstern get better hardware!

Just because I tend to stress a system to it's breaking points doesn't mean the system is at fault

@drachenstern Yes, but I spent last weekend fixing Windows Registries. Oh!
@drachenstern No, indeed. ducks

Grrr... I have a train that keeps getting lost

@YiJiang You need to train it to behave better and stay put. </badpun>
... cricket ... cricket ... ... ... ... ...

@Moshe sorry, I'm at my instantrimshot.com quota for the day

3:40 PM
@TheRenamedException Heh. What is @YiJiang's GM script?

ok, project still not getting done, you guys ae going to get me in so much (more) trouble ;-)

@TheRenamedException What OS was that lost data on btw, and did you recover it?

Q: What is the best way to track down the origin of this quote and it's appropriate attribution/grammar?

drachenstern The best way to know a man is to walk a thousand miles in his shoes. That way, he's a thousand miles away and has no shoes. I'm willing to bet it's a Jack Handey quote, as it's rather in that vein of thinking, but the question came up, and since "walk a thousand miles in [his] shoes" is so ...

3:41 PM
@Moshe JoshBrain OS v29.3.1, and no, I did not recover the data

@Moshe I recommend reading the transcript around the quote
I did

I can second this reccomendation as it allows me to finish my project ;-)

Ok, will do. Go finish your project.

Will do. I'll undoubtedly be active in here later today ;-)

I will too

3:49 PM
What's with this script? It made a big box and I don't know what to do about it. goes to read earlier transcript

@Moshe pase in teh top box:
**Candidate [${user.name}](http://${user.chatProfile}) [answered](http://${permalink}) :** ${content.plain}

Ok, interesting. I see it put @YiJiang's and some stuff about @TheRenamedException info in there. What does it do though?

click "select message". click a message, it will reformat based on the template at the top, allowing easy copy of the message into a new format
you helped me with the SU digest
this would change the format, so instead of permalinks, you use this script to generate markdown top paste into a meta answer
make sense? If not, I can explain more later...

@drachenstern calm down, it takes me a second to type out the reason for my downvote.

lol, I removed it
:p

3:55 PM
New rule: no downvoting until after you've left a comment indicating why!

Let the record show that I've started a call to a customer support line at 9:54am. cringes thinking about how frustrated this call will make me rather than helping things

@RebeccaChernoff Which company?

@RebeccaChernoff so noted
@PopularDemand I generally do that anyways :p

@RebeccaChernoff Should be pinned/starred.

@Moshe why exactly? of what merit does this deserve pinning?

@TheRenamedException Nope, I'm not actually in any technical networks in the Triangle yet. Shame, really.

see how much easier this would make things @Moshe? :-)

@PopularDemand New rule: no upvoting until after you've left a comment indicating why!

@YiJiang - A bit of feedback. I think that you should make that collapse button slightly more obvious and add a border to the box.

3:57 PM
now, your thoughts to a Meta answer please, so everyone can up/.down vote and we can make the next digest more awesomererer!

@ChrisJesterYoung That's rubbish. Like null-votes.

@TheRenamedException Except meta is offline

@MichaelMrozek Jeff is helping me get work done ;-)

@Moshe I was being sarcastic. I wanted to demonstrate the absurdity of requiring comments for downvotes.

@TheRenamedException Yes and no. Who uses this?

3:58 PM
@ChrisJesterYoung New rule: no posting answers until you've left a comment containing an abstract!

@ChrisJesterYoung huh, maybe I just have you confused with another Chris :-)

@ChrisJesterYoung I disagree.

@RebeccaChernoff I assume this is still the docking station issue? :-(

I want to send them a million postcards that say "Oy, your tech support line needs some direction."

Ok. Work not getting done, Closing chat now :-) I'll catch you guys later XD

@TheRenamedException Yeah. Bye. :-P

@RebeccaChernoff I've had that before. It's kinda like an array. Support Tier 0, Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, etc. They need a Tier 0.

I found out yesterday that saying things like "will shaking the hard drive help?" is a great way to get Western Digital's attention
2

4:01 PM
Uh @Moshe I think you've misunderstood.

@RebeccaChernoff No, I don't think so. I'm comparing that initial person to a placeholder when offsetting a zero-based array to match a one-based array.
First you call tier zero and it redirects you to tier 1.

@Moshe no, they just don't know how to build IVR menus

@drachenstern IVR? Now I've misunderstood. Is that a .NET thing?

it's designed partially to keep you in the queue longer so they can route the call / deal with callcenter delays, and partially out of ignorance
Interactive Voice Response

yay... Chat works at school!

4:06 PM
@drachenstern Ah, makes sense now.

@Moshe in the future, note: google.com/search?q=IVR
http://www.google.com/search?q={insert subject matter here} generally works

There are too many "note" posts here.

@MichaelMrozek that would also get my attention

@TylerChacha - You need to run a userscript that pins posts with the word "note" in them.
@drachenstern haha.

@Moshe Again, why exactly? of what merit does this deserve pinning?

4:07 PM
Yea, I wonder if the moon is made of cheese? ... ... .... ... note (Gaming the System)

@MichaelMrozek Typically, yes, but that really only helps with empty drives, as the ones that contain a lot of data tend to get too heavy to shake by hand.
2

The thought that whoever that is will soon be out of stars fills me with joy

@MichaelMrozek They asked me to star everything with the word 'note' in it..
and then someone else starred the other ones..

@drachenstern Well, if it should be noted, then it has to be noted somewhere. That'ds the idea of the sidebar. Being that stars are abused here, pinning is required to note important things. De Facto.
@TylerChacha No, I said "pin".

@TylerChacha They actually asked you to pin them, and you should probably not do what they say

A: What is the best way to track down the origin and grammar of this quote?

chaosWell, I googled "never judge walk mile shoes mile away have his shoes handey" and got this, which says the quote is Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them and you have their shoes." – Jack Ha...

@PopularDemand This one was indeed empty; it was brand new
10 hours ago, by Michael Mrozek
Excellent -- the bag of silica gel my new hard drive was packaged with burst in transit and filled my drive with little pebbles. It sounds like a rain stick when I shake it

pin > star

@MichaelMrozek Wait, it can do that?

Ah
Ok, I have to get moving. later folks!

4:11 PM
@MichaelMrozek "Empty" and "empty except for silica gel" are not the same thing. On the plus side, it was empty of free water molecules.

Good point

So at the rate I'm going I should have 10k on three sites by the end of the year, if I don't do any work

@drachenstern And you won't have money to pay those taxes and you'll owe 10K too.

One or more of you should make one or more rchern-backwards-smiley jokes there.

4:15 PM
@PopularDemand Done

@Moshe, the point being that if I press "1" to indicate I'm calling about "<x>", don't route me to "<y>" (with a chunk of hold time) where I have to explain that I'm calling about "<x>" and then a person routes me to "<x>" (with another chunk of hold time).

@RebeccaChernoff This is a non-issue. Typically when you tell <y> that you're actually calling about <x>, you get routed to <z>.

Oh well, off the phone because I'm downloading a driver that I doubt will help.

Oh, hey, the Geoff Chetwood countdown is at four hours.

@Community Can you see this?

@Moshe, view -> source and take a look.

@RebeccaChernoff Did. Couldn't find anything. Will try again.

look more (:

@Moshe CSS 3 transformations

5:06 PM
it would appear to be with jQuery yes
they apply a class on hover

@YiJiang Oh? So IE won't show them then...

I'm trying to work here :P

the class on hover does the rest of the work

@Moshe They would move, but not rotate

pffft giving him the answer after I say to look for it is no fun. ):

5:06 PM
Can anyone please point me to source?

Didn't ask...

@YiJiang @drachenstern - so jQuery does the motion and CSS3 does the rotation?

No, I said it appears to be jQuery applying a tag on hover
I didn't say it was confirmed that that was true

@Moshe CSS :hover is used to reposition and rotate

@YiJiang So why would it work, but only halfway, in IE?

5:09 PM
@RebeccaChernoff I had an idea of what the problem may be with the userscript a la Chrome, but I still have to test and see...Fingers crossed, heh.

The new class simply changes the border color of the bottom box

@YiJiang huh?

@Moshe Why won't it work? IE has no support for transform, but repositioning would still work

@YiJiang Ah, so it would jump.
understands

They also applied some transitions, hrm...

5:11 PM
@Moshe no you don't, because you didn't try it in IE
go try it in IE
they have an IE7 specific stylesheet

I don't have IE on my Mac... It's been a while.
I should just stop being lazy and go see for myself.
goes to stop being lazy and see for himself.
@Fosco - Hi, got your email, responded. Thoughts?

@Moshe Hey, I did not have an unpleasant first experience..

@Fosco Well, I appreciate that, thank you. I misunderstood you then.
I mistook your critique, I guess.

Yeah.. I liked it, was just caught off guard not knowing about the credit union debt.

must be a bad feedback receiver...
@Fosco Fair point. It's part of the original game. I'm considering your feedback for the iPad version though.
@Fosco - Did you use Game Center? It'd be nice if you did.

5:15 PM
i have game center.. i have to launch it from there?

Your highest positive score is posted to Game Center. You need to be running 4.1 or higher, which, you said you were.
@Fosco @YiJiang - Wow. I am behind the times. Time to look up some CSS3.
@Fosco You actually need to sign out of the Game Center app and sign in through the app. It's better not to use your regular account for "sandbox" (aka beta) games, as per Apple.

ok, i'll do that and play another run through

@Fosco Thanks. Make sure to quit the game from the multitasking tray, then log out and restart. The app isn't great with multitasking and Game Center yet.
WOW. CSS3 transitions have so much potential. Poor IE...

@Moshe now you see why the industry has a general apathy towards IE (legacy) support?

@drachenstern Sure. IE has always been behind the curve, but isn't this slightly hypocritical? IE was bashed in the browser wars for things like the Marquee tag. I guess that was different, because it was HTML, not CSS.
</rant>

5:24 PM
Now we can have CSS marquee instead!

No, the fact that IE is developed using a very waterfall method means that they can't really keep up the pace that the other groups can
Do you know how many iterations of iOS came out in the first year of it's lifetime?
How many iterations of Windows Phone 7 do you think we'll see in it's first year of its lifetime?

@drachenstern Honestly, no. But yes, iOS, Google Chrome Windows Phone, (et al, or "that's all", heh) do update quite often.
@TimStone Live example please?

@Moshe protip: go look it up ;)
Windows Phone 7 hasn't updated yet afaik for the core OS
the apps themselves may be updated, but that is not a function of the core team

@Moshe my score is posted, but pathetic.. lol.

@Fosco I don't see it yet. you have time to update it. ;-) (Tip: Try to buy Sushizushi for ~40M and sell for ~150M, Ask @Zypher about that one.)

5:28 PM
Lots of "Meta is offline for maintenance" time lately.

@PopularDemand indeed, I was remarking on that to Josh privately this AM

@PopularDemand Is the benevolent dictator thinking of more ways to say No?
The version history of iOS (formerly iPhone OS) began with the release of the iPhone on June 29, 2007. iOS is the operating system that runs on Apple Inc.'s mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. This operating system also runs on the Apple TV, but the user interface is different. Apple provides updates to the operating system for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch system through iTunes, similar to the way that other iPods are updated, and touts this as an advantage compared to other mobile phones and devices. Security patches, as well as new and improved features, are ...
Lists the versions on the side.

@Moshe I wasn't asking for a history lesson

@drachenstern Oh, fine, too cool for me, huh? I see how it is.

@PopularDemand add me on skype. :p

5:30 PM
@drachenstern Heh, just pointing it out. Now, trivia, if you didn't look yet:
Which iOS version was the only one not released to the general public?

@drachenstern You're not cool enough for me to install Skype.

@GeorgeMarian ....
@PopularDemand I know I am, but I wouldn't ask you to go through that trouble.

@TheRenamedException is baack!

@Moshe only for a second

5:34 PM
@TimStone Talk about putting foot in mouth...

@TheRenamedException bye, second's up. :P

Ok, nevermind, i found the answer to my question
ARGH

@GeorgeMarian I mean...It's not even unintentionally offensive. It's blatantly wrong. Companies really should stop letting interns handle things that can end up causing so much trouble for them, heh.

VERY FRUSTRATING

shakes fist in support

5:36 PM
I was just bit by this:

Q: "Vote too old to be changed"... but I haven't voted!

Leon BambrickI saw what looked like a good answer, and immediately upvoted it. Then, as a good citizen, I decided to reserve my right to vote until I'd ensured that the answer was valid. So I immediately withdrew my vote. This worked fine. At this point in time I had voted in neither direction. After follo...

Will someone please downvote this for me?

Q: Thoughts on Censorship

chibacityI recently saw a post where the OP was bemoaning the fact that it can be difficult to get a good look-in with answers in tags where there are users that are fast (FGITW), really on the button, and have high reps. Basically tags where a few users are all over them. Fair enough point for discussion...

I downvoted, withdrew thinking I should read some more, and then realized he's totally wrong
(see my answer)

@TimStone I don't buy that there are that many interns in the world. People are just screwing up and then rushing to say "oh, it was a naive intern's fault" if/when they're caught.

@Moshe I must return to work now, have 2 bugs remaining before I review this project with my boss, did you need me?

@TheRenamedException You should just get back to work. :P

@TimStone Yeah. That's just unbelievable. Both the tweet and the fact that they let whoever tweeted that do that type of work.

@TimStone you're right, what the hell was I thinking???
:-)

5:40 PM
;)
@PopularDemand This is true.
@GeorgeMarian sighs

@GeorgeMarian Okay, I just read it, and while I never use twitter except when linked to a specific one, I'm sure there must be some more offensive tweet out there from one of the millions of twitter users.

> I know, right?!
LOL

> U.S. intelligence agencies are drawing criticism from the Oval Office and Capitol Hill that they failed to warn of revolts in Egypt and the downfall of an American ally in Tunisia.

@PopularDemand Fair enough. But, you have to admit it's pretty freaking bad.

5:48 PM
Breaking news, people who were treated like crap got tired of being treated like crap.

facepalm?

Never saw that one coming.

Why is the solution to a regime treating you like crap always a regime that will treat someone else like crap?

@GeorgeMarian I'm usually pretty pro-media, but in this case I think it's partially on them. They always make peaceful (and mostly peaceful) revolutions seem like big nationwide carnivals, instead of serious business.

5:51 PM
@PopularDemand Indeed.

@mootinator The boot always has to be in someone's ass, apparently.
Ah, this article is full of gems.
> "There should have been much more warning" of the revolts in Tunisia and Egypt, she said, in part because demonstrators were using the Internet and social media to organize. "Was someone looking at what was going on the Internet?" she asked.

@GeorgeMarian At least she didn't ask them to download it...just do some window shopping.

lol
I assume this is the reaction to the criticism that they were asleep at the wheel.
"Why didn't you tell me I was supposed to pay attention to that?"

Yeah, the intelligence agencies' response was basically "Uh, we told you about this last year..." I guess they wanted the CIA et al to turn the TVs to the right channel for them, or something.

6:09 PM
shakes fist at company which shall not be named

@TimStone Chetwood Inc.?
speaking of which, 3 hours to go!

Android App #1 is in progress...

6:25 PM
@Fosco that is?

Something very simple I'm doing just to get into it.. it's lame. Ask a Question, get an answer from a real person via text message.

@Fosco ok cool

I feel like nominating on WebApps simply to force somebody else to nominate
(not really)

@badp Slightly more monopolistic. :P

@TimStone That sure narrows down the field. ;)

6:35 PM
oh hi @OctavianDamiean

@GeorgeMarian You'd know who the company is, let's put it that way, heh.

you should check this game out
unicorn attack lol

@TimStone Yah, I just couldn't resist cracking the joke.

Heheh
Robot Unicorn Attack is awesome.

my unicorn keeps crashing into things :(
2

6:58 PM
@mootinator Yeah, I normally get somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 in a single run and then crash and burn, heh.

Im a Mortarboard!!!
yes

woo

hehe
Can I still see upvotes
??

??

7:04 PM
My brain is turning into liquid ... needs sleep :) Nite all

G'night!

@TimPost are you the impostor moderator who inpersonates @TimStone
??
if thats you
good night!!

@Trufa shhhh, don't tell anyone.

Okay, I know the accepted checkmark is an "OP privilege" sort of deal, but... really?

@TimPost the secret dies with me! hehe good night!!

7:06 PM
@Reno ew hey

@PopularDemand I'm looking for a question, I think yo answered

@PopularDemand O_o

@PopularDemand concerning how downvotes also affect 10k+ users
@PopularDemand am I going cu-cu

@PopularDemand Then I guess you don't get sidechannel communications from me ;)
@Trufa copper-copper?

@drachenstern mmmm I'm confused

7:14 PM
isn't CU the symbol for copper? (Cuprum)
Copper ( ) is a chemical element with the symbol Cu () and atomic number 29. It is a ductile metal, with very high thermal and electrical conductivity. Pure copper is rather soft and malleable, and a freshly exposed surface has a reddish-orange color. It is used as a thermal conductor, an electrical conductor, a building material, and a constituent of various metal alloys. Copper metal and alloys have been used for thousands of years. In the Roman era, copper was principally mined on Cyprus, hence the origin of the name of the metal as Cyprium, "metal of Cyprus", later shortened to Cu...

I think Trufa's going to enter the police academy...

it might be, but was obvious that trufa meant 'crazy'

do you mean cuckoo?

@drachenstern hahahahahahahahaha

7:16 PM
@drachenstern I ment cuckoo

protip: I knew enough to disambiguate the meaning and make a separate joke. I knew that. ;)

I spelled it like I would in spnaish
!!

That I did not know. Run that last one by me?

@drachenstern I was going to acuse you of asperger
hehe
good catch

I actually do think I'm about 40% Aspy, to be honest. I don't think I'm as bad as Moshe ;) ... I am starting with a new therapist on Thursday of next week, so I had already wanted to followup on that and discover any new behavioral therapy.
#TooMuchInformation
#NobodyCares

7:20 PM
I'm reading the definition and thinking "what's so bad about this?"

@drachenstern what would be the opposite of asperger

> People with Asperger's often display intense interests, such as this boy's fascination with molecular structure.

what ever it is i have that

@Trufa I have no idea

7:20 PM
@Fosco often to the detriment of other social skills
not as bad as autism, but close
That boy clearly does not have a preoccupation or fascination with chemical structures or that would be a 3D folded model in front of him
> The lack of demonstrated empathy is possibly the most dysfunctional aspect of Asperger syndrome.[2] Individuals with AS experience difficulties in basic elements of social interaction, which may include a failure to develop friendships or to seek shared enjoyments or achievements with others (for example, showing others objects of interest), a lack of social or emotional reciprocity, and impaired nonverbal behaviors in areas such as eye contact, facial expression, posture, and gesture.
This, however, is me to a T. I have like ZERO social empathy, and don't understand this preoccupation with body language, altho I have learned to observe such situations and take them into account. I feel like a lot of the time I have to play watchman in my head to make sure I'm doing the things I should. I don't understand taboos.

@drachenstern really?

I have a hard time with language as well, communication is tricky for me. I don't show it, because I work on it, but I'm not as far Aspy as some people I know of, so I don't think it's that big of a deal.
@Trufa Know how all the great theorists say that we should be more like children, because they see and observe and say what they see and don't try to view things through a lens? That's how I work most of the time.
I get funny looks a lot.
I sometimes wonder if I'm just a hedonist and a narcissist and self centered.

@drachenstern I find that fascinating, I am the absoluto ultimate and total oppiste
I see everything as a metaphor
so to speak

Visual thinker?

almost
@GeorgeMarian me?

7:26 PM
@GeorgeMarian well I see myself as a visual thinker too tho.

@Trufa yah
@drachenstern hmm

@GeorgeMarian absolutely and with mild case of synesthesia
Synesthesia (also spelled synæsthesia or synaesthesia, plural synesthesiae or synaesthesiae), from the ancient Greek (syn), "together," and (aisthēsis), ","is a neurologically-based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. People who report such experiences are known as synesthetes. In one common form of synesthesia, known as grapheme → color synesthesia or color-graphemic synesthesia, letters or numbers are perceived as inherently colored, while in ordinal linguistic perso...

because I can visualize things. When we speak of programmers juggling things I literally think of a programmer juggling a closure, and a class, and a UI design. It's all very abstract. I build images of my projects completely in my mind so that I know where to go and what to do. Then I was told that that was all completely normal, so I have no clue if I go further than most or if I really do do something unusual in my head.
Now synesthesia is NOT something I have.

Yah, I may have mild Synesthesia myself. Or something that presents itself like it. It may just be the dyslexia. Many times I select words on how they "feel."

I confuse many sensations with colors

7:29 PM
has just hit the meta rep cap for the second time ever!

@GeorgeMarian well rather I assign colors to thhe

> Lexical → gustatory synesthesia
how interesting

@drachenstern to me that happens mainly with smelling
not so much with taste

@Trufa I don't know if mine is really Synesthesia or not. But, it does seem like a crossing of sensory input.

Interesting.
So anyways, I need to go walk my dogs. I shall return
and then I get to start working on coding up some tables.

7:31 PM
@drachenstern c'ya

@GeorgeMarian oh I'll be ghosting

@GeorgeMarian well Synesthesia is hard to define unless its extreme

lol
@Trufa True. And, just like dyslexia, asperger's, autsim, etc., it's a matter of degree.

@GeorgeMarian I actually had no clue I had it

7:33 PM
@TheRenamedException Grats

i though everyone say felt things like me
@GeorgeMarian then I incidentally found a video

@Fosco thanks. 100 of that came from my Town Hall Digest question

youtubing

@Trufa Yah, it took me a long time to figure out I was dyslexic, though I had a suspicion since I was a teenager.

@TheRenamedException Congrats! I'm close to capping today, too.

7:34 PM
@GeorgeMarian I never took that test
I probably have it to some extent

oh, wait, /reputation says this is my third rep cap hit, I am surprised

@Trufa That sad irony is that I went to a lecture given by a dyslexic and I didn't follow through.

@GeorgeMarian hehehe

@Trufa This is what did it for me: dyslexia.com/library/symptoms.htm

@GeorgeMarian in my case i have a very hard time spotting the difference between "word" and "wrod"

7:36 PM
At a quick glance, I ticked off at least 1/3 of those.

@GeorgeMarian i'll take a look!

@Trufa I need to figure out my specific issues to work on them. Like "ou" in words give me trouble.
That said, it's interesting to note that sometimes errors stick out like sore thumbs, other times they go totally unnoticed.

user153011
Hi again! :)

@GeorgeMarian god damn!
is this article precise
I mean medically
??

@Trufa AFAIK it's accurate, at least from the observational perspective

7:40 PM
@GeorgeMarian I will take the test then
ASAP
damn
I felt really identified, I mean, except some points

If you want, I have several books I can suggest.
@Trufa There's a lot of variety. Dyslexia is actually an umbrella term now.

@GeorgeMarian shoot!
@GeorgeMarian ok... that makes sense

They refer to it as a "constellation" of symptoms. So, imagine a bunch of points representing specific symptoms and lines connecting specific dots.

Wife hits 60%+ of those traits

On top of that is difference in degree. So, each dot would be brighter/darker depending on the degree.
@drachenstern A LOT of people are dyslexic. Some estimate 10% of the population.
Personally, I think it's more like 1/3, bearing in mind that mild cases don't warrant a diagnosis.

7:44 PM
@GeorgeMarian much like most of this pathologies

@Trufa Yup.

One of my very good friends is dyslexic. Has amazing picture memory and visual skills.

For example, there's a good chance that many of the world's CEO's and entrepreneurs are dyslexic to some degree.

@GeorgeMarian I believe this!

@TheRenamedException Yah, dyslexics almost exclusively a visual thinkers.

7:45 PM
@GeorgeMarian yup.

Makes me wonder if it's just a difference in brain wiring that's a hold over from before language.

He's got great business sense also
@GeorgeMarian I totally believe it is just different wiring
the idea of it being from a time before language is interesting

@TheRenamedException Yah, that's my thinking on it. And, as far the reading issues, that seems to be what the medical evidence suggests. A different pathway is used in dyslexics. One that just isn't as good a symbol recognition.

@TheRenamedException me too, the visual memory part specially
@TheRenamedException I don't remember written words I remember pictures of the
m
as if I had scanned them

That's what I have heard

7:48 PM
@TheRenamedException It is hard to explain though, the scanning is quite accurate analogy

Shoot, i wish I hadn't erased what I was gonna write...ok, gimme a sec. lol

@GeorgeMarian hehe

I once memorized a very complicated route through NYC (one to avoid tolls on the trip upstate) just by being in the passenger's seat. When it came time for me to take the drive myself, I just did it. I only remembered 1 street name in the entire route, the rest was all visual and all just done by feel.
I still see that street sign in my mind whenever I think of this story.
It was the only street name that I used to verify the route as I was taking it.
When I was a child, my dad would make me memorize poetry to recite at church. That was a total, f@#$ing nightmare.

@GeorgeMarian I feel really very identified with this
!!

Once or twice it went easily, almost w/o effort. I wonder if those poems were visual or why I memorized them so easily. Of course, that had made the other times feel that much worse.

7:54 PM
@GeorgeMarian I was just about to say that, I am very inconsistent
with things like poetry

@Trufa Definitely go for the test, then. I still haven't done the test, but there is little doubt in mind. That page of symptoms was an life-altering, eye-opener.
@Trufa Yah, inconsistency is a big part of dyslexia. Feeling of chaos, that type of thing.

@GeorgeMarian I have no doubt I will

Ironically, I'm a perfectionist. :)

@GeorgeMarian really, well I am inconsitent with that
VERY VERY VERY inconsistent
with most
I a mess
but with some things

That's another thing about dyslexia. It's not just about the symptoms. It's also about the reaction to them. People can take very divergent paths.

7:57 PM
I brings me to the border of a nervous breakdown if they are not perfect
@GeorgeMarian BTW thank you
@GeorgeMarian for some reason

@Trufa Yup. I feel almost OCD at times with some tthings.

I feel relieved
(I didn't see it as a problem)
but now
It's nice to be able to call it something

@Trufa You're quite welcome. After my experience with it, I've made it a mission of mine to educate people about it whenever the opportunity arises.

@GeorgeMarian no, really, thanks!
feels great
the synesthesia doest bother me

@Trufa Yes! Exactly. I got a lot of resistance about this from my dad and my brother. What they didn't realize, was that I wasn't looking for an excuse, I needed an explanation for WTF was going on in my head.

7:59 PM
but this does

I've felt different all of my life. Like seriously, different. But never knew why.

@GeorgeMarian but do you get ""better""?
@GeorgeMarian I my case I don't feel different
because it is a very specific part of my life

@Trufa It waxes and wanes. There is not cure, on coping. You learn to live with it and use it to your benefit.
So, while it can be quite challenging, overcoming it has it's rewards.

I try to understand it, to be aware of it, to make better decisions because of that awareness.

@GeorgeMarian nicely put, I like that

8:02 PM
Quick question, do you guys know if all browsers support this? "test!".substr(-1,1) == "!"

Some call it a gift. Others say, if it were a gift, they'd give it back. lol

that is, substr with a negative first argument?

@GeorgeMarian i'll gift wrap it for anyone

lol
@TheRenamedException No idea.

@GeorgeMarian np, asking in JS room :-)

8:03 PM
@TheRenamedException me either

JS isn't my strong suit. I both love and hate it.

I love and adore it
I used to hate it until I found Prototype.js

@Trufa I must say, it feels good have truly helped someone today.
@TheRenamedException I love that it's flexibility allows things like jQuery, prototype.js, etc. I hate that it so desperately needs a library like that.

I think I've added five views to Chetwood's MSO profile by myself today.

@TheRenamedException I think so, yeah. It's just a shortcut anyway, you could always go the long way if you were feeling unsure. :P

8:05 PM
@GeorgeMarian I hear you!
@TimStone I'll just test :-)

~1 hour left. It'll be weird to not see that red stripe anymore.

This is the opposite of "don't feed the trolls"

@GeorgeMarian If you are on a mission, today, you can rest
@GeorgeMarian really, I can't stress enough how much I am thankful

@Trufa hehe No rest for the weary. I have many other missions. (Like finding gainful employment.)

8:08 PM
@GeorgeMarian for you?

@Trufa Believe, despite this only being chat, I know how you feel. It totally changed my life once I moved from suspicion to confirmation.
@Trufa Yah. This being unemployed thing is starting to get to me. :)

@GeorgeMarian I can imagine, I am reading all I can know, and it all fits, it makes so much sense!
@GeorgeMarian careers.stackoverflow.com ??? hehe
@GeorgeMarian in what industry are you looking?

@Trufa Yah, I have a profile on it, I just haven't filed it yet.
@Trufa The industry doesn't matter as long as it's nor doing something horrid.
I'm a web developer, mainly PHP and all that.

Looking for full-time work specifically?

@TheRenamedException Ideally, but at this point I'm looking for anything reasonable.

8:14 PM
@GeorgeMarian I get it, I'm kind of good at carrer advice hehe If there is anyway I could help you!

@Trufa Nice. I may just avail myself of that. I'm horrible at the job search thing. I effing hate it.

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, sorry... I would love to bring another full-time PHP developer on, but at this point we aren't there yet

@TheRenamedException If you have steady part-time work, I wouldn't turn my nose up at it. :)

We may have some jobs in the future, but you wouldn't be without competition for it when it happens :-) Send me a resume to georgemarian@josh.gitlin.name
I am hoping we will be bring some people on part-time in the near future, but, we'll see

Actually, if I could find enough steady part-time work to just make ends meet, that would allow me to work on other interests. I think I feel the entrepreneurial itch.

8:17 PM
@GeorgeMarian it's great running your own company. Great, but scary sometimes :-)

@TheRenamedException damn right!
@GeorgeMarian I'm feeling entrepreunerish too

I'm kinda used to scary. :)

This reminds me of my need for more minions..

@GeorgeMarian if you ever need a helping hand I would love to get more involed in ther programming industry (I'm in Business Administration / online marketing)

@TimStone That just reminds me of Toy Story 's "We need more monkeys!"

8:20 PM
@PopularDemand LOL

Monkeys would presumably work for bananas, that could work out favourably.

@Trufa Nice. I have an interest in learning more of the business side. Let's keep thinking/talking about this. You never know where it may lead.

@TimStone While it is technically true that enough monkeys at enough computers would eventually bang out the complete collected work of Linus Torvalds, I don't think you have that kind of time on your hands.

@PopularDemand I love that scene.

@PopularDemand Hm, this is true...I guess I'll have to go with real, qualified programmers then.

8:23 PM
@PopularDemand Not to mention the pile of bananas it would require.

@GeorgeMarian The Dole ship comes to port around here, I figured I could make it work.

@GeorgeMarian Psh. It's not like we're going to, say, run out of bananas worldwide, soon, or anything.

@TimStone lol
@PopularDemand Sure, but I was thinking of Tim's need to source that pile.
Which, apparently, he has covered.
@TheRenamedException BTW, sent.

@GeorgeMarian sorry, battery died, without a doubt

8:25 PM
!!

@TheRenamedException Hahah

@GeorgeMarian received! I will review this afternoon
@TimStone Might be more expensive than you think ;-)

Heh :P

@TheRenamedException BTW, that's not necessarily my "best" resume. I have rearranged it a bit, but I wanted your input on that version. (The differences aren't huge, mostly order of sections and the style of the summary.)
Oy...too many windows!

@GeorgeMarian Cool, thanks for the input. I will send feedback and will only share your improved resume with my CEO and business partner :-)

8:29 PM
Anyone ever run their mouse up and down the comment stream in here on a large monitor?

(Which, BTW is the name of the blog/site I'll be lauching soon.)
@TheRenamedException hehe

@drachenstern this implies I have a large monitor :-(

ok, I guess you could zoom it out :\
actually that works just as well

@drachenstern I have now. Why?

8:30 PM
@PopularDemand just interesting to watch all the related messages light up on hover

@drachenstern you're procrastinating from work huh? ;-)

So somebody help me out here, what's the deal with Geoff Chetwood? I know the name part, and the URL is reminiscent of someone who was a troll on tdwtf forums. Is the guy a professional troll? Also, is it the same guy that was trolling on TDWTF?
@TheRenamedException just sat back down and was scrolling over the transcript and noticed it
thought I would help someone else get as much done as I am today :p

@drachenstern Hmm...professional troll, I never thought of that idea.
2

8:33 PM
How much could one get paid for that?
I may be in the wrong profession...

@badp Ok, that settles it. I need to get a freaking printer.
@TheRenamedException Yah, that's what I'm thinking. I find myself unintentionally trolling people all the time. :)

@drachenstern I dunno, I think I only caught like the last two weeks before his suspension when I came to Meta; maybe not even. You may know him as Rich B.

@PopularDemand that may be him from the TDWTF forums then ... If I was really shirking work I would go look
I think this settles the previous question: forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/p/11308/195155.aspx

8:49 PM
Is it true that an user can delete his/her own question when it has no answer? I think it's the case and would like to suggest it in a comment to stackoverflow.com/questions/4902657

@AlexandreJasmin I don't know the exact rule; I think it's if the question isn't upvoted and it has no upvoted answers

@MichaelMrozek That sounds right.

@MichaelMrozek I think the threshhold involves the answers getting upvotes or the question getting upvotes. I'm sure there's a .... nm, thanks Tim

@PopularDemand I've been trying to edit that, but I can't figure out how

reddbuttedmoney?
@MichaelMrozek there is NO edit that can save that.

About half of it is sane, the part about how much control he'll have over an Area 51 site

My group and I have a site that we feel could seriously benefit from the SE2.0 infrastructure, and we feel that we could draw in at least 100 seriously avid users and a crowd of at least 10,000 contributors, but we're not sure that we can maintain the required velocity to obtain a complete site using the Area51 system.

What advice can you give me about launching this site that I haven't told you anything about, and getting it to have a successful launch velocity?

Unfortunately I'm not an avid user of the SE2.0 infrastructure and don't know enough of how it functions to know how successful

8:56 PM
That might be what he meant. I'm totally thrown by "What site should we use?"

Should I submit the edit?
screw it, I submitted it. We'll see if it gets approved by someone in the community ;)

@drachenstern Ha, it showed up in my queue. Okay then, let's see....

5 downvotes, 1 edit suggestion, 1 close vote, and 2 spam flags. This is quite the post

Eh, it's certainly an improvement. Approved.

And then balpha closed it anyway

9:07 PM
Alas, what can one do?

@drachenstern One could blame balpha's terrible, terrible iron fist.

You could always ragequit and delete all your content. That seems to be popular these days.

@PopularDemand or alternately the fact that the user didn't really give a shit?

Okay @drachenstern, you heard the mod. We'll see you on another site.

@mmyers I .. uh ... um ... that is to say ... I feel I should at least accumulate 30k rep on MSO and like 140krep on SO before then.

9:09 PM
Nah. Some 1k-er did it today.

That way there's plenty of reference to "dracenster" that nobody understands before I make it painful.
@mmyers no kidding? Hmmm

Well, he was a 2k-er this morning before Marc deleted his sockpuppets.

Hah
Well, there you go.

@mmyers Ha. MSO? SO? Other?

SO.
No, I'm not going to post the account here for gawkers.

9:13 PM
Shame that
But totally understandable
So anyways, in unrelated news: I will not be creating additional sockpuppet accounts. The one titled drachenstern is sufficient. I'm pretty sure I can have a sockpuppet without having an original account, yes?

A: Sockpuppet admission...

mmyersI used to be a sock puppet, but I have become independent now. I don't need the hand.

(There's a better one that I want to post, but that will do for now.)

whew project almost completed!
Just a few tweaks from the big guy!
\o/
@mmyers I love that as well as Poly's comment

> The suspension period ends in 37 seconds.

Thirty seconds!

DONE
Now to troll meta.stackoverflow.com/users/5640/… for a bit and see what shows up

9:20 PM

A: Suspended user creating new accounts

Ladybug KillerIt's against the rules creating sock puppets. Period! (Ok, Jeff is an exception). Flag one of his posts for moderator attention and explain your concerns. Or post a question here on Meta ;)

There we go. It was a comment, not an answer.

Kev
oh joy

Odd, still seeing 1 rep/no avatar. Cached?

idk, let's see what this does:
nm

Crazy huh?

So anyways ...

9:34 PM
Yey, I think that might do it for this project
blinks
Do I actually get to quit early today?

LOL, I was going to say Michael I don't know you anymore!

I meant to post the link first; I failed at clipboarding

My boss' new icons were such an improvement. I really shouldn't be allowed to use Photoshop, I always create such monstrosities :-)
Okay, final review, wish me luck

9:52 PM
It's not every day I see a deleted accepted answer

AND THE MODULE IS APPROVED!!!!!
dances
That makes me happy
Also, client is busy using their system, so I can't deploy it now, so I will deploy on monday and MY WEEKEND BEGINS NOW! WOOT!!
Achem, sorry. I am excited

\o/
I'm not sure what a weekend is, but I'm happy for you anyway. ;)

@MichaelMrozek I am confused
Oh wait. That's not public information :-)

@TheRenamedException If I remember correctly, the OP posted his own answer with a screenshot that he then accepted, but has apparently deleted now.
Also, that's actually only kinda [status-completed], as I think Popular Demand found out earlier, heh.

@TimStone ah, OK
Man, I jinxed myself. Client was so excited to see the new module now they're saying they can stop work so I can deploy it. LOL
I guess I should be happy that they like our work so much LOL

10:01 PM
Whoops :P
Hahah, indeed.

@TimStone I already tapped the Newcastle keg too!
(Ok, I didn't yet, but I will be soon hopefully :-)

@TheRenamedException that sounds totally like a Yatta! to me

@TheRenamedException Heheh, nice. :)

@drachenstern Syntax Error near "Yatta!"

@TheRenamedException heroeswiki.com/Yatta! <-- I say it often enough ... one would think you'ld have seen it by now ;)
Also my favorite TV show that I'm SO bummed got cancelled and (secretly) hope that SciFi will pickup and revamp/continue. Cos it had a lot of potential. But Kring has already moved on, so I think it's gone forever.
Considering getting a tattoo of The Symbol but that may be too hokey.

10:11 PM
@drachenstern Oh, got it now
I have heard you said it but did not know it had an actual -o- reference

@TheRenamedException See how the picture kinda resembles the rchernism?

@drachenstern sure does

@TheRenamedException Where's that Skype dancer when we need him?

10:12 PM
@TimStone he's right here ;) \o/ ;)

And the changes start coming n from my boss... LOL
tweak this, move this... LOL
so much for "approved!"
Hey I guess this is why we've been told our software is "joyous to use" :-D
And these are easy tweaks

lol
That sounds so familiar ...
Hello socks

HI!!!

@drachenstern from what I have heard, I think my boss is much better to work with than yours :-)
He can be picky, but he's right :-)

@TheRenamedException only some days ;)

10:21 PM
@drachenstern True!

KILL IT!!!!
SQUASH IT!!!
(How do you make that one in Skype???)

@TheRenamedException (bug)
i are a haxor

10:24 PM
@PopularDemand Someone earned a badge 44m ago ... don't you have to login for the system to notify you of such a thing? meta.stackoverflow.com/users/5640/…

Woah. massive power surge, all UPSes just went crazy!

@TheRenamedException eeeeeeep

:o

@drachenstern good imitation. more like eeeeeeep eeeeep eeeeep though :-)

@drachenstern That was when he cleared 200 rep. He'd already logged in enough to fulfill that part.

10:26 PM
lol
@mmyers yes, but why did it trigger then ... that's what I'm getting at

@drachenstern you'll notice the "seen" points to January

Did the system spontaneously rerate him or did he log in? That was an awefully odd time on the server to trigger such a thing.

@drachenstern I guess his account became 1 year old while suspended

@badp 2011-01-28 21:32:59Z <-- yes I noticed that. That's what I'm asking about
@badp undoubtedly.

by then he had 1 rep, so he didn't qualify

10:28 PM
and he just got his rep back so it awarded the badge based on those two factors, that part I understand
But did it do so because of something he did is really what I'm after
I want to see if he comes back and starts more crap.

Nah

/me goes and pops popcorn

Again, it would've updated the "seen" field

@badp that's what I figured

10:39 PM
And I'm done!
Newcastle time!
Drinks are on me everyone!

I'll have a large jQuery
2

Coming right up sir
Would you like extra stars with that? :-)
Also, it looks like I won't be getting a new name

user153011
Happy Hour in 12 minutes

user153011
Is it a problem if I can't be there all time?

It's ok. It's really always Happy Hour in here!

user153011
10:51 PM
@TheRenamedException Happy Hour really should be earlier. It's midnight there in 9 minutes. (CET, UTC+0100)

It's 5:59 PM here! (EST)

user153011
@TheRenamedException good for you :/

user153011
good night :)

11:09 PM
Time for homegoing now

So, I'd like to know by people who have access to mod pages -- what's the quality of those pages' markup?

it is amazing

Portman(Original title: "WTF is this thing called?") I have a couple of networking components in my rack that take giant AC adapters ("power bricks") that don't fit neatly into my rackmount PDU. I have one "thingy" that is shown below, and I need to buy a few more. But I have no idea what I'm searchi...

Stackexchange sometimes seems to have a life of its own
!
you have to love this guy though:
Wow. Extension cord. I would like to apologize to Planet Earth for the fact I required 12 people to tell me something that obvious. Score: Portman 0, ServerFault 92.

LOL
That is... I don't even know, LOL

@Zypher And another mod passed it by with a comment, tsk. :P

@Tim dare me to edit the question title to "What is the name for this thingadingdong"?
er, what is the proper name?

@TheRenamedException Ahahaha... @Zypher already renamed you, and that was just for fun, I'd be careful ;)

11:44 PM
@TheRenamedException lol, lol, lol

search fails me right now
@TimStone ROFLMAO
Alright going AFK for the balance of the night. Have a good one @Tim @Zypher and @Trufa!
