What?? Did a change go through that was exactly opposite to what I as one of the affected wanted? (although just a single person) Now content is still gone, links are still broken, but rep is retained? TAKE the rep, I agree with the rep skew problem. Leave the links working. They can stay 'deleted' as far as the rest of SO is concerned, just accessible from links on blogs, google, etc. Make it obvious with a banner/background color that it's not acceptable any longer. sigh...

@darron no, the content is back for the really popular posts; the rep is retained for everything that's deleted (except for low-cost items for some reason)

Q: Deleted posts should not influence reputation

GillesA major change was suddenly introduced in the way reputation is calculated yesterday: if you’ve contributed something worthwhile to the site, you should keep the reputation for that even if it eventually gets deleted. “Worthwhile” here is defined as, A score of 3 or greater Visible ...

I agree that what's been implemented is pretty stupid

It's the best of both worlds. You get to keep the content and the users raging about losing SO history don't have to explicitly say that it was really about the rep

And the copycats keep pouring in. Not the best of my world.

Copycats?

@AdamRackis “I saw this question therefore I can post something similar”

link?
Remember, tons of crap come into this site. Just because some of it mildly resembles some of the re-opened controversial posts doesn't mean the latter are causing the former to be posted. Post hoc, bitches :)

@AdamRackis dmckee posted a few in response to your question:

A: Concerted Efforts to Close "Hidden Features of X Language" Type of Question

dmckeeIf there is a conspiracy responsible I'm going to pout because I have not been invited to join. I believe what happened is A user posted to meta to complain that his question about some IDE had been closed when the Eclipse question had been well received. (Take note of the reason for the compl...

Of course, since most of the evidence is deleted, and what remains is mainly on MSO which I suck at searching, you're putting me in a difficult position
Programmers has had it the worst
Science Fiction and Fantasy, not so much. On Science Fiction and Fantasy, we deleted all the old stuff we didn't want any more. Coincidence? I think not, but I obviously haven't tried on a statistically significant sample of sites.

That answer is from July 2010
A more prominent lock display should minimize stuff like that going forward, and like Cody said, for the few imbeciles that can't read and post crap anyway, well, Meta is quite good at leaving snarky comments and voting to close
Further, Michael's comment here meta.stackoverflow.com/q/57363/155403 seems to indicate that at the time these questions were getting re-opened all the time, adding to the confusion. A (better) lock with a (better) message atop really, really should solve this

A: Why are requests for tutorials closed?

Sachin ShanbhagNo it is not common to close such questions which ask for tutorials. There are lot of such questions which ask for tutorials which have been answered too. Probably in the case you have mentioned, the question could've been closed because of existing duplicate. You can post that example question ...

@Gilles Ah. I don't suppose I can trade my rep for the deleted "Full Time Employee versus Contract Work?" for simply having the link work outside the site? :) ... that answer didn't make the cut. It wasn't THAT heavily upvoted, so maybe that's rational. I strongly disagree with breaking the links, though. This all seems like a overly dramatic way to solve a couple simple problems (rep skew and list pollution)

Q: Why are so called "discussion postings" sometimes closed and sometimes not?

Q: Why is this question so hated?

Adam RackisThis question, on ASP.NET MVC best practices, has 5 delete votes and was unilaterally closed by a moderator. Why? It's not a list question, it can be objectively answered by an expert (and has been), it's useful—and it's not even fun. It's been favorited by 238 people, and upvoted by 166. A...

How dumb would you have to be to ask about the MVC question :)
@Gillles It looks like the other two questions dealt with questions sometimes being closed and sometimes not. That's a huge problem. Questions like that should always be closed, and locked, to prevent any confusion.
@Gilles - and the one I asked about was already closed and on its way to deletion. I hadn't known best practices questions were unacceptable, but the community quickly educated me. I'm not sure any of those links show why keeping these questions closed and locked with a prominent banner would allow any of the confusion above.
