@Mithical There also appears to be some confusion re. the name given to appointed mods of the TL. In the original CM announcement and one of your own posts, they're referred to as "room moderators", while this comment from Makyen insists they're called "staff-appointed moderators". Which is correct, or are they both?
TL mods are elected
I know this cause I designed the system we use :D

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog that iteration had MSE mods handling moderation - and they were appointed

Q: Has the moderator's several rewrites of my question gone a little bit too far, and actually convert it into a conspiracy theory question I didn't ask?

uhohSoon after I posted a question with the title "Why was the gunboat USS Panay in China’s Yangtze River circa 1933?" and within the body: I'm curious why exactly it was there in 1933. I understand there was a conflict between the Communists and Nationalists in China and yet at times they formed an...

6:32 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I'm curious why did you choose to ping Mithical and not other mod e.g. Journeyman? (who is much more active here ;))
@JourneymanGeek huh? points on sandbox :D
@ShadowWizard Because I consider Mithical as the foremost community expert on how chat works.
@ElementsInSpace k?
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog interesting. OK, thanks!
@uhoh 1) doubt you will find history experts here that can take your side over a mod's side, 2) welcome back! :)
@ElementsInSpace wut
You seem to post few messages every few months, which is fine and not rare. So perhaps some coffee would help?

@ShadowWizard nope
@PetəíŕdtheWizard ah, so I know. It was the CIA hacking to your computer to read your chats.
If you wonder, they intercepted this message of yours, and Marked you as "highly suspicious, check activity". :P

no camera in the pocket PC
But it does have four USB ports. And Windows 11 pre-installed. And 512GB SSD drive. And all for less than $400.
yes camera in the pocket PC
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog In the UI, they are referred to as "Staff appointed moderators" (without the hyphen, even though technically there should be one). When it comes to elections and general parlance, the phrase "Room Moderators" is used.
@ShadowWizard eww windows 11
@Mithical Okay, so I guess it's not wrong per se to call them "room moderators". How about the rest of the answer? How accurate is it?
@PetəíŕdtheWizard meh, it can't be so bad. I hope. :D

A Pocket PC (P/PC, PPC) is a class of personal digital assistant (PDA) that runs the Windows Mobile or Windows Embedded Compact operating system that has some of the abilities of modern desktop PCs. The name was introduced by Microsoft in 2000 as a rebranding of the Palm-size PC category. Some of these devices also had integrated phone and data capabilities, which were called Pocket PC Phone Edition. Windows "Smartphone" is another Windows CE based platform for non-touch flip phones or dumber phones. As of 2010, thousands of applications existed for handhelds adhering to the Microsoft Pocket...
yeah I saw it :D
It’s a Pokédex, right?
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Looks fairly accurate. There are a couple places you could be even more nitpicky if you wanted, such as the fact that for users without the association bonus, their network reputation on chat is only calculated by adding all their profiles together if they have 20 or more reputation on a single site, but I don't see anything wrong per se at a quick readthrough. "various other abilities and access to information" is a very informative phrase, though.
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog ah oops, actually it's "mini PC".
You'll need a big pocket for it, but still..... very very small compared to ordinary PC, or laptop. ;)
lol
@Shadow what's the brand of your mPC?
7:26 AM
@PetəíŕdtheWizard it's written on the picture ;)
@ShadowWizard Not to our phones.
7:41 AM
@Makyen Per Mithical's message above stating that while the software term is indeed "staff appointed moderators", the term "room moderators" is indeed used to refer to them in common speech. The term is also used in the staff announcement, linked as the "source" in the answer. As such, I'm going to add the note "(also referred to as 'room moderators')" after "Only a designated list of 'staff appointed moderators'".
Please let me know if you have any objection to my adding that note.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact well it's not a phone. :D

Q: Are there any ways that coffee consumers can measure the caffeine content of what they are drinking by themselves?

uhohAs a consumer of coffee from several different sources (made at home, from a coffee shop, out of a fancy designer can at a convenience store), I have often wondered about their relative caffeine content; "Does three of these equal two of those?" To that end I'd like to ask if there are any ways t...

@uhoh huh! Nice. :P
@ShadowWizard "Whoa careful too much coffee would keep us awake for too long." Hmmm... let me check... :-)
@ShadowWizard But phones are mini computers.

wondering who on earth uses torrent on my computer
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact it's like calling parrots mini eagles :D
@PetəíŕdtheWizard Mini birds.
8:04 AM
@ShadowWizard unclear and blurry
I feel like the composition and scope of the community team is probably worth its own question. Even it isn't going to yield short or long term results it's probably worth a retrospective of how things were done, current changes and how things are done and the expectations of the more active network denizens. That the term is 'CM's remaining' is very much the heart of the problem IMO. But I think at this point I really want to see how someone else would tackle the question, and I have another tough, nuanced question that's been chewing at my brain so ... @ShadowWizard go ask 😁 — Journeyman Geek 6 hours ago
:D
@ShadowWizard I have too many of those :D
@uhoh see? You're still awake! :D
@PetəíŕdtheWizard because it's black on black
@uhoh As a mod (elsewhere) I'd have suggested rolling back and not had the meta commentary on the question itself, but rather in the edit reasosn
@JourneymanGeek 6-8?
8:23 AM
@ShadowWizard "...every few months..." active chat rooms make me dizzy - too much information, parallel discussions, context required, brewed coffee setting off smoke detectors... I easily get overwhelmed. About the history experts - well this is Stack Exchange, it should be flat and helpful to folks trying to get up to speed in a different country - I mean site.
@ElementsInSpace I don't want a pokédex, I want a PET, preferably with Roll or Ciel.

hmm butter...
I can believe it’s not butter.

@JourneymanGeek butterflies, you may be surprised to hear, do not contain much saturated fat.
I am infact surprised to hear that
@SPArcheon butterflies are too delicate. @Sha would definitely dream of being a moth

@uhoh I mean here in Tavern, e.g. I can't really help you with a question specific to History.SE because I'm neither expert in history and nor active on that site, do not familiar with its quirks. Overall, mods have the last say, and unless it's something really obvious and/or extreme, no point clashing with them.
I'll gladly take this specific one.
@M.A.R. hmm. Now I might!
10:37 AM
I know its a direct result of the equivilent of too many footnotes but
I didn't realise you could link so many other posts that you'd have a seperate page listing those
@JourneymanGeek I don't know how you could not have known that.
It's very common.
Cause I don't obsessively obsess over every minituae of the site, and I generally don't link so much stuff?
and I literally forgot about that post until I randomly got stuff related to it happening all in one week :D
@JourneymanGeek But it's in the sidebar right next to every post :O
"See more linked questions"
That bit :D
10:50 AM
You need to link lots of things for that to happen
That happens pretty much on every MSO/MSE post with a little bit of activity.
I've never noticed it before, which was what I was alluding too :D
Well, go hunt down posts from staff or about the company, and you'll get used to it. ;)

Upon rewatching the Star Wars movies, I noticed how much I could not stop thinking about Finn saying "that's not how the force works!" (or was it Han in TFA?) while watching The Empire Strikes back (SW5). The force is really a superpower there, being able to communicate and sense so much. Luke is on Dagobah, and can get the precise location of Cloud City on Bespin just like nothing.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact the force very much is a deus ex machina
Also there's a lot of specific skills you don't see in the movies
It's confined.
What's happening with my reply...

Q: How do people answer questions on stackexchange?

DC2974How do people actually answer questions on stackexchange? As in, there are so many questions, so how do people know what to answer, or even simply which questions to look at? Do people actually go searching for questions to answer, or does the website suggest questions for each user to answer?

Ah deeply ironic
I approve
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Very tempted to leave a comment reply: "I'm not completely sure."
2:45 PM
"Very carefully"
@JourneymanGeek If this is the only criterion I suspect we will be forced to remove quite a lot of content from the network.
@Slate I thought something more along the lines of "Congrats for the posting our 100 000th quality post. We will put this on the wall for the foreseeable future".
To be fair, if it wasn't closed I'd have answered that :D
Isn't that just the number of non-deleted posts, though?
2:47 PM
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact "100 000th quality post" does make it sound a bit like on a list of all posts by quality, this one ranks 100 000th.
Yeah, it's just undeleted. It's probably bounced around 100000 for a bit
@Slate Sounds accurate. :P
There are actually 185,726 questions including deleted. I'll grant that 185,726 is a pretty satisfying number to look at, but it's not quite as interesting.
The next step is 501,000.
Not 404000?
You wouldn't find it
2:53 PM
Heh. Fair :P Given how long this site has been around, it'll need a massive increase in dramas and how fast they happen for me to even be still alive once post 404000 is reached :P
Are you expecting to not be alive in 30 years? That's unfortunate.
Might be more, might be less
Drama indicates people caring enough
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact It's not unreasonable to assume I won't be
This is an unfortunate turn of events.
Sorry, dramatic.
Eh, dunno if I would make such a fuss about it :P
3:05 PM
The nice thing about death is you never live to regret it
Also even optimistically
we don't know if the network will last another 30 years or what it'll be then
I bet it won't. Nothing on the internet lasts that long
slashdot is almost there
but its also lost a lot of what it was IMO
3:45 PM
@JourneymanGeek I mean, that's pretty much what the passage of time does to things. They change
