3:00 PM
@Tinkeringbell I don't think fashion had anything to do with it. Steel dosen't really go with anything.

@JourneymanGeek Gold or silver?

Seems a bit... damascene...

Diamonds are a girl's best friend ;)

@JourneymanGeek Pick up one of those rocks, get behind a boulder. The minute his head is in view, HIT IT WITH THE ROCK!

.... I should have seen that one coming. :D

3:02 PM
you should have, yes

But you didn't, so now you're dead...

Your friend is only mostly dead. That's a little bit alive!

Pass me that rock?

@Mithical I don't think Tink is familiar with Princess Bride D:

I know a few memes here and there, not that one though.

3:09 PM
@Tinkeringbell that whole movie is... memes, before they were memes.

Oh, and that it's supposedly a horrid movie or a great one, depending on who you dare ask.

@Tinkeringbell Its... both?
I think my personal description of it is "I have no idea why it works but it does"

I'll stick with documentaries ;)

@JourneymanGeek her loss

3:32 PM
@Tinkeringbell Said the white pony :P
(self reminder: photoshop Rarity hairs on the parrot :P )

3:46 PM
@KevinB SharePoint.

i mean
sharepoint has never once switched taken a community built knowledgebase and then shunned the community who built it

@Mithical WHAT?

THEY SAID ATTEMPTED MURDER OVER INTERNET MODERATION IS A TAD EXTREME

@JourneymanGeek To be fair, we get very little of the stuff that some sites deal with daily. In the grand scheme of things, this is a very cushy job. :)

@JourneymanGeek Who had somebody try to kill them?
That seems like something seriously messed up

3:57 PM
@EkadhSingh uh
Yeah.

Why would somebody try to murder uh yeah? Uh yeah is a great person

Some people are just... Sociopaths?

Is there anywhere I can read more about this?

@EkadhSingh eh. That's not something I am happy discussing
Respecting folks privacy and all that

Ok
Fair enough

4:16 PM
@SPArcheon Last warning.

@Tinkeringbell ufff, so serious all the time.... :P

Of course. Moderating is serious business!

also, you do realize that someday someone WILL flag that as offensive?

I'll deal with it when that day comes :)

A mod should know - never underestimate how "smart" the users can be.

4:20 PM
Well if any user really is smart, they'll read the context as well :)

that is why "smart" is wrapped in quotes.
Euphemism

Hi all, hope you're all staying safe. What's the current guideline on users impersonating high-rep users?
There's a guy on TWP that's stolen the photo and name of the highest rep user on that site.
Sorry if that's bad grammar, I'm not a moderator.

somewhat of a grey area in some senses, but iirc that particular form of it would warrant a flag

Not sure how mods would handle that, but flagging is definitely ideal. Especially if they're impersonating them for the sake of trolling/tarnishing their name.

The guy posted a daft question and then appeared to have deleted it after I posted a warning comment. The profile remains, so could be used again.
I think it's for the purposes of humour than anything malicious.

4:27 PM
@Spevacus we will figure it out if there's no idea
@Snow custom flag with an explanation

due to limits on name changes, they may be stuck without moderator help

Definitely flag, sounds like something that might needs to be cleared.

If he has no posts - uh could flag one of your own

Looks like a moderator nuked the question and will probably deal with the user here.

4:30 PM
Ah good

Well, nuked the profile too. Which seems appropriate if it's just a throwaway account.

@Snow If the site was Anime, I think that it goes covered under "Cosplay".

lol

I mean, who never wanted to dress like Skeet once?

Is it just me or do the new system fonts look unnaturally odd when they're above a certain size?

4:33 PM
Didn't see them big yet
Example?

@Snow 𝔠𝔬𝔲𝔩𝔡 𝔟𝔢 𝔴𝔬𝔯𝔰𝔢.

<shudders>

Journeyman biggest fear.

@Snow maybe this is normal and how it looked was odd. We got used to that ...

4:43 PM
i particularly hate numbers in sergio ui

Was there ever a plan to "systemise" the fonts for chat. or is chat still viewed as being somewhat unimportant in the grand scheme of things?

@Snow yes, I don't think it is likely to get an overhaul

i'd prefer it didn't

I mean when Balpha left I think the prime caretaker of bonfire was lost. What left is some patch work.
And chat is not really a revenue maker.

Exactly. Why waste money on something that doesn't make money.
Then again, does anything outside of SO earn revenue?

4:51 PM
Jon Erikson did write a business case for it but that didn't make it. Or at least that is how I interpreted the story

they could find some value in doing it from a Teams perspective

@Snow break-even maybe. Traffic and clicks makes money.
@KevinB yeah.

though... with teams having a free tier now, that'd effectively introduce "private" chat rooms, a whole nother can of worms

Oh that’s an interesting idea
Using teams as a private chatroom

I guess there's some implicit revenue in keeping more of the trash off the main site and keeping users on-site for when they want to talk trash.

4:55 PM
I'd hate to see teams ads shoehorned into chat

@Snow the main short term thing is maintainability
So I figure when the big q and a stuff is done - we can try lobbying 😁

Right, I'm outta here for some fresh air and food. Been good to catch up.

which site is the most understaffed in terms of moderators right now?

so

I'd love to moderate SO and see how far I could get on 101 reps.

5:04 PM
@KevinB they have that many moderators and they’re still understaffed?

@EkadhSingh they have ... A lot of activity

Fair

All of the questions on their front page are less than an hour old.

Yes, SO is very busy. Like any other site, mods there can ask us to start an election if they feel that they need more help.

@Snow still responsible for they platform, so they still have to moderate that I fear.

5:23 PM
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard well sadly it probably is. And it's really just ammo for the Israeli right-wing
But I don't think the internet or this place is actually ready for that sort of discussion, so I digress.

I digest.

5:38 PM
ok so how can I express my distaste for this BS font problem that stack overflow designers pushed on us?

@Peter politely

do we really need to install a browser extension plus a custom script in order to revert this nonsense?
@JourneymanGeek who do I write?

@Peter post an answer on the post by the CM saying that you don’t like it. Also follow the advice by @JourneymanGeek

is this not polite?

You can post about specific issues on the question about it?
@Peter well the moment we start using terms like BS and nonsense, not really

5:40 PM
@JourneymanGeek seriously?

JG doesn’t appear to be joking, so I would say most likely

Yes
It's a really good idea to spell out exactly what is the issues you have and how it's affecting your quality of life of using the site. 'I hate it' isn't useful feedback
Or of course specific pain points

Its no wonder stackoverflow is a cesspool of low quality for the past two years
PEACE OUT

@Peter I don’t understand?

Quality and being nice are not in opposition. It's a fallacy to put them on the same spectrum. You can be firm and close and delete content that's bad without treating the people who created the bad content like they are trash.
2
Also... like... if you take the time to explain why something is "nonsense" we can actually do something about it. If you're going to fall back on just complaining, all we know is that you don't like it - not how we can fix it. It seems clear that "going back to where it was" isn't an option, so help us make the experience better by offering alternatives.
> I'm really struggling to read this because the font weight is so light that I can't actually read the content on my Windows machine. It seems like increasing the size might make this easier for me.
1000000% better than "nonsense".
And... if you can't put into words why something is bad, look around and find people who have already explained why they're struggling in good terms and upvote. You don't have to add your own words to the pile of words people have already written if you're just saying the same thing.

6:18 PM
@ymb1 User sees that they created a tag which they don't remember creating in the past. They see that it has fewer than 50 questions. They then add it to random questions to get it to 50.
In the current model, this can still be gamed if the user keeps track externally or remembers the tags they created, but it can't be gamed for tags the user doesn't remember creating. (Jeff's thought was that people wouldn't remember enough for it to continue being a big problem.)

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I see, thanks

I honestly can't explain why the new font is painful to read
it just is

Maybe because Segoe UI looks like comic sans (at least on my computer).

I haven't forced replaced it yet with an extension

Just stare at this for a few hours and the new font will look awesorne.

6:28 PM
i mean
i don't think the new font looks bad, other than it's numbers
but it gives me a headache

@Catija I agree with that. But one thing I've run into is that there are too many others who don't do that, such that when I do, the responding user (mod/staff) isn't listening anymore, as they just think it's yet another one of the same things. What to do in that case?

They weren't listening to begin with
They'll tack it onto the site satisfaction survey and feed it to 100 random users and move on

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog There's only so much that we have the bandwidth for. So at some point we have to move on. But I really can't give a "what to do" answer because it depends on what has already happened.
Sometimes it's as simple as "I missed a ping or forgot to check back."... sometimes it's "there's not going to be any change and you just need to move on"... sometimes it's "I'm blocked by something else that you're not aware of"... or "this is something we're going to work on in six months but we have nothing we can update about now". Sometimes it's "this just isn't impacting enough people negatively to take the time for"...

we're in no better place now than we were after the 0.0015% comment. meta may have survived, but it's nothing more than a free QA service now.

7:00 PM
WHY IS IT SO THIN
@KevinB it's SO thin!
I add extra bold to the font on my digital readers
It's so pleasing

Like, not the crazy type of bold, just a little thicker than this chat font

(see, i do cast upvotes)

I'm still skeptical

one of these are more square than the other
top one, the middle ofthe characters are above the middle
bottom oneit's below
or middle

7:05 PM
@KevinB only for science I hope?

He going soft

I've waited five minutes, still hate it — Kevin B 2 days ago
> Though, honestly, UI fonts are not designed for reading larger amounts of text.
Hmm well, I guess no use bothering now
Should have said something earlier

heh
that was a response to what's his name saying just wait 5 minutes
This is our plan going forward. I would recommend sitting with these changes for more than 5 minutes, but I hear ya. If you're comfortable writing your own CSS, you can override the --ff-sans variable to have our old font stack which is Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif. — Aaron Shekey ♦ 2 days ago

While it's currently only on (M)SO, perhaps might be an interest for neighbor users

Q: Outdated Answers: flagging exercise begins today

Anita TaylorAs I mentioned last month, the next step in the Outdated Answers initiative is an exercise for flagging outdated answers. Starting today, you may see temporary prompts on Stack Overflow that ask if an answer is outdated. The prompts have a chance to appear when the accepted answer is at least 60 ...

i've never really understood the whole... "problem" surrounding outdated answers. fix them. if fixing them will lose useful information, then they weren't all that outdated to begin with.

it could well be that it gets "fixed" if you don't sort the accepted answer as first.

Well, I don't know for programming languages because most of them are usually backward compatible, but I might see the possibility of being useful for software updates that remove/change the location of the settings.

8:13 PM
@MetaAndrewT. For programming languages, it's generally a case of "it used to be that this convoluted construct was the best way of doing things, but now it's a single function call".

Rob
Simply change the sort order, from the default setting:

8:43 PM
🚽

@M.A.R. I will admit, I've had this question for a while - something that looks good in a UI - is it necessarily going to look good in long essay format.

9:47 PM
@Catija Okay. But it would be nice if a staff member at least left a response to one of these effects.

9:59 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog err, i mean, that, just happened,

10:38 PM
@KevinB The problem with fixing outdated answers is that it generally would require a user unilaterally changing the meaning of another person's answer, which is generally frowned upon. One reason that it's frowned upon is that often the user doing the unilateral changing is wrong, and actually the original answer was correct, but now there's an answer that was upvoted for one piece of content that's now been swapped out for another.

10:53 PM
I wonder if this is because of my account merge, but I can't view posts that I starred prior to the merge. When I look at "starred by me" or "posted by me", they don't go far back at all.
Is there an MSE post about this or should I open a bug report?
@Catija Would you happen to know (something you might have seen when you did the merge)?

11:48 PM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange - if anything is broken it's going to need a dev poking at it. I suggest logging a ticket

Logging a ticket?
Does SE even have a ticket tracker?

Use other - and uh... You know how to write a good detailed bug report so I won't baby you ,😃

"halp. thing not work. fix asap kthxbai"

11:54 PM
More or less 🤣
I got a ticket like that once at an old job.

wow
> Bug report: Account merge broke chat accounts.

A few months ago, I got my accounts merged. However it seems like my chat account (ID 323957) was overwritten by the chat account of my old user (ID 207492). This has resulted in me no longer being able to access posts in chat which I've starred or which have been starred, or my own chat history.
Hopefully succinct enough.
Since I have a feeling I'll get ignored if I put too much detail in.
