@MetaAndrewT. funny thing is that's something I implicitly want - that any new tag include a wiki and excerpt

12:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek ah, I meant not for that specific answer, but the whole concept of "new tags should be reviewed" but who and how

1:11 AM

1:46 AM
I just saw a handful of accounts registering on one of the sites I follow. It's strange because they all claim to be "a painting business" but with different names in different countries...What's the right course of action for this?

Rob
2:32 AM
@Feeds According to the explanation the yellow squares are open to some debate as to whether that's a satisfactory outcome. Microwaving an egg can have expected results.

@Tinkeringbell \o room title says it's full of stars, but I haven't gotten one yet :P

Rob
@bad_coder If you have any stars they will be listed on this private webpage: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/89/tavern-on-the-meta/…

10:12 AM
@bad_coder Try disliking Bart. It earned me a lot of stars when I started here first ;)

10:31 AM
@Rob yes I know, that was the problem... no stars = no badge :|
@Tinkeringbell [Thinks to himself: I better not ask who Bart is 🤔]

Haven't seen him in a while, he's a pair of glasses that used to drop by every once in a while :)

@Tinkeringbell Ahh I noticed him, the Bart from Switzerland.

@Rob I'm not counting on the 2nd chat badge...I don't spend enough time on chat.se

11:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek any updates to your impatience yet?

I don't see one new CM, let alone the half a dozen we really need on the short term :D
I literally expected to see one yesterday, or the day before
@bad_coder Badges will come :D

@JourneymanGeek We'll see. I wouldn't be surprised if it took a week or two. Just on-boarding internally before being thrown under the bus that is Meta

@Luuklag Well - I understand that, but I haven't seen the new CM in other places yet either
I mean, even mod spaces
(also, ugh, I don't want to sound like I'm complaining but they explicitly ruled out most folks with meta experience this round)

@JourneymanGeek How many times have you said that before now, at least a dozen I think ;)

Yes
I feel terrible about complaining while there's even the slightest bit of interest in the job

11:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek Give it time... Even mod spaces are kind of a big bus to be thrown under ;)

but at the same time, its something I'm not greatly happy about
@Tinkeringbell I know that quite well :D

@Tinkeringbell Must be true considering what I've heard about TL

@Luuklag Its mostly better not

@Luuklag TL has pretty much shaped up.

not perfect - but better

11:44 AM
Good to know, not that I have any asiprations to join there xD

Killing half or more of the usual traffic helped :P

@Luuklag You should! It could use even more Dutch people :D

Don't got no time for that

I was going to say having a system to resolve issues helped but that too..

11:45 AM
And the highest rep I have is at MSE, there are perfectly capable mods there

@JourneymanGeek Hey, you can't deny it's a lot quieter than it used to be. It could ruin my productivity for the entire day, now if I lucky it can do that for an hour :P

@Luuklag You don't need rep for modding... I didn't even have over 10k on MSE before starting, I think. But I guess you're a bit out of luck with appointments being replaced by elections and there being very few new communities ;)

@Tinkeringbell Seeing the other candidates in an SO election I don't even stand a chance
I have less then half the badges

Yeah, I can imagine things on SO being especially tricky.

11:50 AM
And other sites I dont come close to 200 rep xD

Ugh, bad luck then.

3 hours later…
3:16 PM
@Tinkeringbell @JourneymanGeek can either of you clean up this multiple answer thread: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/360423/…

Later ;) For now, flag them so people can use the new review queues? ;)
(I really, really want to finish rolling out some patches before 5 o'clock ;) )

Rob
4:04 PM
If they introduced 30, 50 75, and 100K privileges and bumped moderators up a notch they could save a buck on CMs.

@Rob not sure I want them saving any more than they do....

4:49 PM
@Rob Moderating != community managing

5:01 PM
if they just got rid of meta, they could just sweep everything under the rug

It would just move to twitter :D

and Discord

5:16 PM
And Facebook, and Reddit, and everywhere else where you can just type things into a textbox :)

i mean, sure, though i suspect that's far easier to ignore

@user400654 and far harder to control
Mods aside - done right, you have some degree of control over content, and a ready space to handle things.
and in meta, everyone's invested in SE (or what they view it should be)

5:37 PM
Anyone noticed something missing from the global inbox? I'm pretty sure I used to have something like, "All inbox items" at the bottom that led to my network-wide list of notes. Is that gone for anyone else?

it does seem to have vanished

I'm thinking of writing a little something about that... @Journeyman, do you still have yours?

looks like no

Right.

I still have an "all items" at the top

5:40 PM
Nothing at the top either.
Can I see a screenshot, @user400654? And here's mine:

Huh.

have it both on mse and so

@user400654 userscript?

@Tink Do you have the link?

5:45 PM
mine looks like that

@Ollie That's a question, not a statement :P I don't have a script like it.

@Tinkeringbell Errr
I meant the "All items" button.
Unless I'm missing something.

Oh, sorry. Nope, my misunderstanding. I don't have a link like it.

I hope that's not by-design.

What did that button do? Where would it take you? The inbox already has all the messages you've received from across all network sites, so where did this other link take you?

5:49 PM
i don't have a userscript for the inbox
only one i have atm is to move the views/active/etc stuff back where it belongs

@terdon stackexchange.com/users/18074340/ollie?tab=inbox, so I could see all the messages.

@Luuklag are you seeing the "all items" button in your inbox?

Anyone knows why this was deleted as R/A or Spam? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/…

@Ollie When is that useful? When trying to find some very old message?

5:50 PM
everything else is just adblock rules, which wouldn't be adding it back

I don't know if its worth keeping, but its defenitly not spam or R/A
@Ollie yup

A: Should Stack Overflow moderators have a "standard of duty"?

Jon EricsonIt's long bugged me that there is a double standard for moderator duty. On every Stack Exchange site except this one, the standard is doing moderator-type things once in a while. As long as an inactive moderator isn't destructive, the only reason we de-diamond is to avoid a minor security risk. I...

@Luuklag Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. The OP had a pretty unpleasant experience there with many of us (including me) piling on, so deleting it as abuse would only make them feel worse. There was nothing abusive there.

@terdon I got quite a lot of messages this morning. I go there to search for messages around eleven hours old.

@Ollie Really? I see messages in my inbox going all the way back to January 22nd.

5:52 PM
@Luuklag Passive aggressively calling out other users interacting there, and I don't want to waste any time on rollback wars.

Rob
Jon's emeritus suggestion.

The question, comments, all of it were a mess...
This is a nice, fast, solution.

@terdon Feburary 1st here.

@Ollie Ah, now that seems like a bug.

Although I am following ~250 posts about now...

5:53 PM
just more silencing of dissent, nothing unusual

Dissent is okay, vandalizing a post and calling out users has never been.
(Also, I did this after consulting a second pair of eyes)

@terdon Give or take a few hours. There is actually one from the 31st... but nothing beyond there.

@Tinkeringbell true, but wouldn't a regular delete solve thinfs as well? Makes the user feel less piled upon.

This ^^

@user400654 behold the violence inherent in the system?
@Luuklag its useful too sometimes let a user know exactly what's wrong

5:54 PM
And they were very understandably frustrated, people had been a bit aggressive and rude in the comments.

Rob
@Ollie That disappeared a couple of months ago.

Again, myself included.

@Rob Really?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I saw it a few days ago, I'm sure.

5:55 PM
@terdon As far as I could see that was a case of 'you reap what you sow', but if you want to talk a wrong into a right feel free.

Rob
AFAIR

I agree with Geek that deleting it as r/a sends a clearer message of what was wrong than plain deleting it.

@Tinkeringbell I didn't see that at all. I saw a confused user who was trying to make a suggestion in good faith and got piled upon for not knowing how to write a proper feature request. Nobody took the time to explain, yet many found the time to attack and ridicule.

I can go send warnings to all the people in that comment thread though, no problem. Though I had actually hoped to do other things tonight.

Rob
Scrolling to the bottom is about twenty swipes for me, much easier when you can yank a scrollbar; but yes, it's been gone for a while.

5:57 PM
@Rob Then why does it appear for some and not for others...

@Tinkeringbell I hope you crochet something nice instead. Re-reading that Q made me change my mind. The way they replied to the comment of Animuson was out of line.

@terdon I saw a days old question someone was vandalizing, three answers that included what looks like nonsense unrelated to the original question, a bunch of comments from people trying to explain and then getting called out in a vandalized post... At that point it doesn't matter how confused you are, the behavior needs to stop.

@Luuklag You mean this? "@animuson. Are you saying that stackoverflow.com/posts/49432735/revisions is a perfectly valid edit? (It edits away the default behavior of the markup editor.) - I might add that the two numbered links to the two images have been left in the markup code - although they obviously don't make sense any more."?

Rob
UserScript? - specific site?

SUSPEND ALL THE PEOPLE.
3

5:58 PM
@terdon No, the part that was edited into the post ;)

@JourneymanGeek Including you? ;)

Especially me

> Shortly after I posted this question/request, the moderator and Senior Product Support Specialist animuson♦ wrote in a comment that the syntax for images was not changed and is still the same and the syntax in the help pages is correct. - Which indeed is true if you take on a very narrow fail-of-conformity attitude concerning what help and guidance is needed to settle whether a suggested edit should be accepted or rejected.

no this: Which indeed is true if you
take on a very narrow *fail-of-conformity* attitude concerning what help and
guidance is needed to settle whether a suggested edit should be accepted or
rejected.

Rob
16 mins ago, by user400654
have it both on mse and so
Missing on both for me.

5:59 PM
@JourneymanGeek But you're a dog...
not a people.

Missing network-wide for me.

do yall used fixed header?

@Tinkeringbell Um. The answers were not nonsense, they were a (possibly misguided) attempt to offer three possible solutions but clearly related to the post. The post was unclear so I can easily understand why you'd think they weren't related, but they really were. I don't know what you mean by vandalizing, did I miss something?

@Tinkeringbell Does it make a difference?
You're a chicken, after all.

@terdon the question was different a few days back, then they inserted the rant and snark

6:00 PM
@Luuklag Oh. And why is that out of line? I know I'm weird with these things, but it doesn't even seem slightly impolite to me.

there was a slight amount of shade thrown at someone with powa, quick, nuke it

@Luuklag Ah. That is a problem, yes

@Tinkeringbell nobody van be a people ;)

@terdon That post went from "When can we expect the help pages to be updated?", which was a normal question, to calling out and ranting against specific users, being a mess of links and text unrelated to the question at all, and the answers didn't answer that original question either?
That's some form of vandalism, even though it's not the typical 'blabla please delete' edit

@user400654 Oddly enough

6:01 PM
@terdon they used some MarkDown to make it extra "nice". It wasn't a friendly reply, it was filled with snark.

@Tinkeringbell Yes, I think the OP was just very confused and nobody tried to help them understand. :(

Those people are our users too

@terdon Well I've shot them a mod message and a suspension, so by now they probably do understand that you don't do that.

We have the exact same obligation to them as any other users.

@Luuklag I guess it's in how you read it. That seems absolutely fine to me. Markdown italics for emphasis.

6:02 PM
@Ollie A chicken? Geeh, thanks. PARROT!

You do look very chickeny. Needs more color.

Ouch... XD

;)
@Tinkeringbell Do you get anything extra when you reach 20K, being a moderator?

I guess I could learn to love a bright red chicken though.

eh, to me it's always felt like too much of an overreaction of "lets be extra careful not to upset the people who could shut us down", rather than they're being treated equally compared to regular users

6:04 PM
@Ollie Nope. Only the assurance that when I step down or get kicked out, I won't lose anything but the mod-powers ;)

but i have a very narrow window to look through

So @Rob

@user400654 There's.... a reason MSE mods were appointed, and part of that was that for the people that can shut you down, it was very hard to not look like they were shutting you down ;)

Do you think the missing "all items" button in the inbox is a bug or by design?

They probably let some things fly too long, which is why things feel so changed now. But I'm thinking we still allow too much and regularly have people holding me back :P

Rob
6:06 PM
@Ollie 🔎🔍

(for example, with answers that I feel really, really, really don't answer the actual question asked)

i mean... appointing, rather than electing, kinda flies against that

@Ollie asking about it is a good way to find out

@JourneymanGeek Yep, I'll go ahead.

@user400654 I'm sorry to be a disappointment?
:P
The fun part about the internet is that you can make pixels light up in specific shapes on other people's screens, like in the 'I'm sorry' shape, and no one will ever know if you actually intended to that, or if it's just random!

6:11 PM
@Journeyman Done.

New "ticket smash" is coming: meta.stackexchange.com/a/359770/361484

@Luuklag Ah, finally!
(the criteria, not the ticket smash)

doing it by quarter is great too

@JourneymanGeek Yeah I suggested that once

@JourneymanGeek Start date got pushed.

6:26 PM
@Catija thx for the update
Blegh rebooting just before a meeting isn't cool
I guess my mac got tired after not being rebooted since christmas

@Catija I'm expecting that there's a good reason - and I'm more impatient in general than the next one :D

Rob
I've seen someone reboot during a presentation, covered it up really good too.

(but I think you might have noticed I am pushing for a few things in general where ever I may be heard :D )

@Luuklag O.o I wish my work laptop could go that long!
They did some weird policy change thing on the VPN this week, so now I have to restart 0-6 times each day because the connection fails. And only a restart fixes it.

@Catija also ugh.

Rob
6:33 PM
HaHa

Glad you're having fun :)

Rob
Yes, I should get the Fun badge for that, but it wouldn't be friendly.

@Tinkeringbell I guess thats one of the few benefits of a MAC

@Ollie - Aibobot has both links, threw a link for your reference in the comments

Rob
UZI is better than a MAC.

6:37 PM
@JourneymanGeek I saw that, thanks. Still odd.

I'll throw it a status-review since I can replicate it

@JourneymanGeek Thanks. What about the tag?

that's up to you :D

I'll keep the current tags as it doesn't appear to apply to everyone.

@JourneymanGeek Relates to getting his computer to him, I think? We've never had to ship anything to is country before.

6:45 PM
.....
I was always under the impression that SE was like 'get what you need and we'll set it up'
but that's probably reasonable

Not for the last two years or so.

I'm sensing someone now doesn't want to be a CM anymore :P

Wait, even for the devs?

I think they have a standard system they send based on your role.

6:47 PM
@Tinkeringbell SE's taste in systems is good enough that I have been stealing their configs for years

CMs get something closer to what Devs get because somehow we got classified as "Dev light"... so we get MBPs instead of Airs, for example.
I guess I'll get a tech refresh in July.

@Catija yay for Macs

I like Macs. :D I guess I'll wait until they get rid of the touchbar before I ask for my next update.

@JourneymanGeek Huh? I thought you used Linux things, not Apple?

@JourneymanGeek would be a pain to set it up remotely with comapny policies though

6:48 PM
@Catija y'all do have a PC option though right?

Yeah, of course.

@Tinkeringbell Dev desktops :D

@Catija touchbar?

Most of the devs are on windows, I think.

@JourneymanGeek Ah, that's a tiny bit better then :D

6:49 PM
@Luuklag The screen they replaced the f keys with?

my last PC was literally a carbon copy of what atwood had

@Catija ah yeah that thing. I have f keys on my MBA

Apparently they're dropping it from the new series and adding back the mag safe charging.

@Catija though, arm based

@JourneymanGeek ;) Mine is 'give my brothers a budget and see what comes of it'

6:51 PM
some software would need to be ported

arm based?

@Catija yup
Oh, the latest macs

Yes.

(tbh, wouldn't affect most folks much but you can't run say MSSQL on that yet I think)
for CM work, I think you just need a good browser and a text editor. (or Shog famously doing it on his phone)
@Luuklag true. Current company just has standard models, and stock images, which work well

Shog's always been on both ends of the spectrum - lots of stuff on his phone but he also scripted the heck out of stuff, so he had machines just to run scripts for us.

6:55 PM
@Catija .... oowwww

He had to replace his main computer shortly before ... last January... and I think he mostly ended up paying for it all himself because the default option wasn't sufficient for him.

(As someone whose server died, I can imagine how having stuff like that in that scenario would be bad )
also ow

Horrible meeting right now, the speaker has a bit of destroyed mic. So there is a lot of background noise

Can you just sneak out? ;)

No I need to modetate breakouts

7:01 PM
@Tinkeringbell tbh - I actually suspect, as long as I got 2 video outputs (4k capable) + a nice keyboard, I'm pretty much ok with anything non potato. :D
I do like smaller laptops than the SE standard windows laptop tho
on the other hand, if I'd been hired, I'd be working out of a co-working space for at least a year

Rob
It looks like some job offers include U$2K to setup a home office, and some don't (mention it): stackoverflow.com/company/work-here/2571979/… stackoverflow.com/company/work-here/2419273/…

@Luuklag Oof. Well at least I hope you get to be in a different breakout then ;)
@JourneymanGeek Are those still open over there?

@Rob I think that's standard - the old one was along the lines of 'We will provide you with a nice desk and chair and everything you need to get started'
@Tinkeringbell ... haven't checked

@JourneymanGeek Everything is closed here... :P
Not much to check XD

Much like checking how taxes and the mandatory retirement fund would work - that's for if I got further down the process

Rob
7:07 PM
It sounds like a computer is offered in addition to that; an important 4K difference when you combine all those bits and pieces.

@JourneymanGeek True...
There's no need to worry about anything of it if it's never going to be applicable :/

well - lets see what happens with the other place, even if they seem disorganised too

Yeah I saw your tweet.... ugh!

Rob
Whenever they're disorganized I offer to supervise; problem solved, either way. :)

I'm wondering if the response was a bit too on the nose
@Rob short version? Company has asked me thrice if I'm interested in a job. I've applied. Still waiting for a response

7:13 PM
@JourneymanGeek You're kidding right?
Nothing to worry about there ;)

Rob
Sends resume to an anonymous FAX number (or recruiter), applies for his own job. 😳

(apologies in advance for the incoming wall of "gone" as I process my spammer backlog)

Rob
We enjoy it.

@JNat accepted

@Rob Oh actually

7:15 PM
@Rob glad someone does xD

I once applied for my own job, then declined the offer.
and I'm still working there

Rob
🥁

@Ollie gone
@Luuklag gone

@JNat jan 14, thats a while back. Good luck with the list.

@Luuklag gone
@Luuklag yeah, I let it pile up a bit more than usual... way too many things on too many plates to juggle... or however that metaphor goes ;P

7:20 PM
@Catija That strikes me as a bit odd... especially for a CM role, can't he start from a personal device? Like... I happen to know several CMs work(ed) from their phones at times... occasionally from a bar on Friday night...

@Luuklag gone

(Especially since there's a... lack of CM power around the place? Esp. with a vacation happening.)

@Mithical First question then is... does this person want to work on their phone from a bar on Friday night ;)

@Mithical The company has specific requirements... I think... due to the needs of Teams and certain security-related things, I think - which may require a company computer? But - to be honest, I'm not sure. I only know that it's been delayed, not the specific arguments for why it was necessary.

Alright then.

7:24 PM
@Catija Last time SE hired someine frim that specific country/region ;)

@Luuklag ?

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating gone

@Mithical I think he's saying that the troubles this has caused will make us unlikely to hire someone from the region again :P

@Mithical seeing that the problem was shipping a computer to them

Or, maybe now that we know what to expect, we'll consider ourselves experts :D

7:26 PM
@SonictheCuriouserHedgehog gone

Rob
Import requirements: trade.gov/knowledge-product/…

@Luuklag gone
@Luuklag gone

@JourneymanGeek Do you have the "view all" links on aibobot but not on your main?

@Catija yes

Weird.. so... what's the common thread between the people who are missing the links and who have them...

7:35 PM
hm
@Ollie do you have the alpha editor enabled?

@Catija not browser I guess. Or do you use separate browsers Journ

@JourneymanGeek Turning it off didn't make the links come back so I don't think that's it?
I'm using Chrome, currently.

@Luuklag Aibobot is at work, JG is accessed from a completely different system
@Catija hm. Vivaldi - so chrome engine

I don't see them in mobile Safari - so seems account-based?

@JourneymanGeek I do, and have the links
@Catija I see them both on firefox on my MBA and on chrome on android

7:40 PM
hm. Can rule out browser then

I don't see them either, on chrome, mobile or pc makes no difference either.

Ollie isn't a mod anywhere.

Teams user?

@Catija neither am I

Oh, do you see the links or not?

7:42 PM
Teams user is plausible

I see them
And im not a teams user

... that... kinda makes sense.

If Ollie is i have bingo!

OK. let me check with Roberta if she's around.
I think Ollie's on the Charcoal team?
But ... yeah.

@Luuklag nor is Aibo

7:45 PM
I'm calling bingo.
Don't care if I have to sing a song later :P

@SonictheCuriouserHedgehog gone

Rob
IIRC it links to here: meta.stackexchange.com/users/…

@Luuklag gone

Rob
Except that it's all sites, and don't recall if it included chat.

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating gone

7:51 PM
@Luuklag can probably confirm the link since it's still there...

Rob
The link in the comment on Ollie's question is even better than what I posted above:

@Rob yeah this is the one
@Tinkeringbell I'd love to see that on Youtube xD

@Luuklag without sound maybe you'll even survive

Ill sign you up for the next season of Idols or The Voice

7:59 PM
@Luuklag I'd be the next "klompen Vincent"

I prefer OGNIB.

@Catija I can do the alphabet song backwards, but not the bingo one...
@Luuklag you had to share that with everyone?! :P

Ofcourse, it's to good not to
And the meeting is too boring xD

Hahaha
Well now you have a youtube rabbit hole of bad auditions, enjoy!

8:15 PM
Hahaha yeah, but ive seen most of them already

Hmm ... I'm not sure I have any better ideas. Perhaps just horrible music in general?

Ill just pretend im listening

8:37 PM
@JourneymanGeek I do.
@Catija if it's Teams-related, should I retag my report?

@Ollie That's an odd thing - we generally have Teams-related stuff on MSO but this clearly impacts the entire network.

@Catija Which is why I asked here.

Did just get confirmation from Jarrod that it's related to the Teams "For You" feature.

Ah.

@Catija time to update the tags or add that as a comment to the Q?

8:53 PM
I noticed the removal more than a year ago but didn't file a report because I thought it was intentional

Juan M on February 04, 2021
We continue our yearly tradition to donate $100 per moderator towards a charity that helps those in need. We look forward to a strong year and take the time to thank our volunteer moderators for their wonderful contributions. Let’s make this one to remember!

10:04 PM
@Feeds were moderators able to select multiple charities, or how does one end up at numbers that arent rounded to hundreds?

Rob
@Catija According to one Team I checked I've been a member for 2 years, yet I'm certain that the extra link(s) in the Inbox Notification were available several months ago, certainly less than two years; it wasn't joining a Team that broke the Feature, though it could have been a Team specific update that disabled it (for whatever reason).

@Luuklag No - my guess is mods who didn't make a pick got their 100 dollar donation split

@bad_coder @Luuklag I think I found some cross-site spammers, can you just give me a few pointers of what I should be looking out for so I don't misreport?

A: Is "Stack Gives Back" for 2019 going to happen?

Tim PostYes. It happened. The behind-the-scenes of the program is a somewhat complex series of steps, and as you can imagine, there were a number of additional complications to contend with this year. The donations have been made, and a blog post will be going out Saturday or Monday with the usual detail...

> If you didn't fill out the form but were a moderator on the day the form was closed, a donation was still made on your behalf, just distributed evenly among the charities.
The post is regarding 2019 Stack Gives Back, but it seems the same thing was done for 2020.
I was doing some math with this year's numbers, though. Based on the numbers, at least 219 moderators made specific donation directions, and not more than 539.

a, b, c, d, e represent the charities in the order they're listed on the blog post, and z represents mods who didn't make a donation direction
Without knowing the number of mods who did or didn't make a specific donation direction, there isn't enough info to know the exact voting numbers per charity.
