@SonictheK-DayHedgehog I would guess its a different supplier and a simplified supply chain
also no graduation swag any more

@Xnero I will try to make sure you get some.

but there was a bit more variety + shipping was a bomb

Q: Auto-delete/destroy 1 rep user when their post is deleted as spam

Mad ScientistMy common workflow when I see a blatant spam post by a 1 rep user is: flag as spam (when I'm a mod this auto-deletes) go to user profile As a mod, I destroy the user. As a regular user I spam flag the other spam posts linked from the profile These are a bit more clicks than absolutely necessa...

Why haven't they implemented that yet?

4:38 AM
@BlockofDiamond cause its not always a great idea?

We'd definitely want to think through it a bit... for example, someone could have 1 rep and still have several posts to their name that aren't spam. Plus, the smokey peeps tend to flag stuff as spam instead of rude when it's rude, which means that we'd get some noise from those flags.
I love the Charcoal peeps but that habit is one that I'm not fond of.

What about only if they have no other posts?

And its useful to have oversight
@BlockofDiamond Lets say someone hijacks my account, and posts spam on, I donno esparanto...
it gets nuked, I sort things out.... I suddenly get an interest in languages, and find myself auto suspended....
its rarely that simple

@JourneymanGeek but you aren't a 1 rep user with no other activity

I COULD BE!
hypothethical me.

4:42 AM
For that matter, someone could hijack your account, spam, and then boom, -100 hard earned reputation

Are you sure having a 1 rep account deleted isn't as bad as losing -100 reputation

but that can be undone in theory
having an account deleted, means a suspension
which means I couldn't stand for mod... granted I already am a mod, and would probably be quite dishonoured... :D

Oh...
But 1 rep users aren't going to run for mod anyway any time soon, suspended or not
But what if they're an unregistered account?
Created the exact same time their spam post was submitted
That rules out a hacked account, doesn't it?

eh, lots of spammers register

4:47 AM
And lots don't
Why wouldn't the unregistered ones get auto-deleted/destroyed and therefore auto-suspended?

The other question would be how 'heavy' the load would be from that
I heard that the old unused account clean up wasn't done cause of that

What's old unused account clean up?

5:03 AM
there was a script that would clean up 1 rep accounts under some conditions like age periodically
... rdp is fun

Rob
@Catija We prefer to flag correctly, as it affects how it's handled throughout the system; if you see incorrect usage it's OK to point it out. Doing a very quick search, in the few minutes available to me, here's a message from an Administrator:
in Charcoal HQ on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, Nov 8 at 22:23, by Makyen
@SmokeDetector BTW: For whoever ends up raising the final flag on these, the preferred flag is rude/abusive, rather than spam, so they are used in as few audits as possible.

@JourneymanGeek I actually like that idea, it would help keep the users page cleaner
So why wasn't it added?

@BlockofDiamond well I donno
I don't actually work here :D

@JourneymanGeek But you're a mod on Meta, don't mods work here?

ert
@Rob SD itself and autoflags (I believe) are always spam flags

5:07 AM
nope
the 3 current mods are basically site mods asked to help out

I guess they're volunteers then

Rob
5:21 AM
@ert The AFs go before a moderator, who undoes any damages; really don't have time ATM to search for better references: charcoal-se.org/smokey/Autoflagging.html and they link to this: chat.stackoverflow.com/transcript/41570?m=26705146

ert
@Rob Not sure what you mean exactly by undoing the damages? I don't think I've ever seen a flag declined because it was the wrong red flag
And most of the time, flags from smokey are handled by the community without moderator intervention
At least on SO

@Rob that's awesome! I think there was something about how FIRE was built that made spam flagging much easier so people would just use that.

@Rob eh, essentially we have ways (and means) to audit smokeys flags
I have RSS feeds for MSE and SU for example
usually does involve in someone nuking accounts, rather than letting them SD that they have chosen poorly
but there's cases where we're not sure if the user needs nuking, as opposed to the flags being invalid
or we turn up other interesting things a normal user can't see

5:43 AM
@Rob autoflags don't necessarily, but any with conflicting feedback trigger a custom mod flag.

and I was hoping to take out my frustrations on a spammer :D

@JourneymanGeek Would you like to buy some supplements? Or maybe some little blue pills? A fake Rolex? All genuine to you and very good prices, sir.

9:01 AM
lol
having a particularly annoying day at work :D
boss expecting answers for things that no one knows the real answer for

9:15 AM
Nice social distant answer there @Snow

Homepage was just anti-Yaakoved
(as in, Yaakov declined or dismissed requests, while Yaakoving means he's marking requests as completed or planned)

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog not sure about it

@rene Thanks. There's always pedants to deal with...

Yeah, I was about to get grumpy but your answer saved me ;)

My original intention when saying "Yaakoved" was that it was full with red tags added by Yaakov, I didn't pay much attention to details, just was amused by that. :)

9:18 AM
Winterbash is supposed to be fun at the end of the day - there's lots of bug reports, but is it really necessary to fix many of them?

So according to this, Anti Yaakoved would be someone who removes those tags.

"Winter Bash" - much like "Stack Overflow" - has a space, @Snow ;)

@Snow well, when you report actual bug and people laugh at you, it's not fun.

@Shadow10YearsWizard The opposite of "Yaakov completed requests" is "Yaakov didn't complete requests", and "anti" means "opposite of", so...

9:20 AM
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog thing is, I didn't have "Yaakov completed requests" in mind when saying it. I had "Yaakov is all over the homepage". Anyway, no big deal, anyone is allowed to use any term. :-)
@Mithical is this official? I was never able to figure how to really write it.

@rene "to get grumpy" you mean you aren't always?

more grumpy if that rocks your boat ;)

@JourneymanGeek well, you're lucky that it's not on daily basis...

@rene Doesn't really rock my boat, but does confirm my stereotype of you :P

Ha!

9:25 AM
Apparently using @Glorfindel's Global Flag Summary user script will hand out the Social Distancing hat on all sites where one has an account

@JourneymanGeek fun fact.... I let my son punch me when he's angry to let out his anger. :)

Rob
@Catija Yes, people being people and all. Our induction and review for the Flaggers involves (briefly): Read the Rules, flag fairly / correctly, listen to advice, come before review - too many wrong flags and didn't listen equals a year or two kick, maybe longer. Appeals are possible, might reduce to half that. --- Called "Ton of Bricks".

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog Makes sense.

72
Q: Can we please get the full count of new hats now?

MithicalIf you have earned more than 99 hats since you last checked the hat inbox, the counter gets limited to 99: There should have been around 300 new hats there, by my count. The 2-digit restriction is there because of historical reasons: @Glorfindel Nah, just a snarky response ;) You have a point -...

@Tinkeringbell grumpy flower?

9:25 AM
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog that's Floern's, not mine :)

(The true criteria for that hat are to register a site visit for a day, and that user script is known to register site visits on all sites)

@Shadow10YearsWizard Have you ever met a flower that isn't grumpy?

@Tinkeringbell sure, they're usually sweet and smelly.
:D

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog I think it triggers too easily and it gets annoying after a while... I just want to read HNQ in peace, not be bothered with 10 new hats each time I find a bunch of interesting things to read!

I'm serial upvoting Yaakov ...

9:27 AM
@Shadow10YearsWizard There's a kind of grumpy that's kinda sweet :P

@Tinkeringbell In that case, once you've earned that hat on all sites, you won't be notified of it all the time when browsing different sites as you'll already have it

@rene in hope to get a Troll hat? ;)

An initial deluge which you can dismiss, then no more of that

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog I don't want to have the hat on all sites just to get rid of the problem :P
These hats are like covid... you get them whether you want to or not and they're highly contagious :P

@Shadow10YearsWizard .... actually....

9:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek it is? o_O

I'm betting a job swap will drop my BP significantly

On the flip side, since people are working hard to guess hat triggers, perhaps the currently non-public criteria to register a site visit may become public?

@JourneymanGeek your what? Big Points?

blood pressure

oh
Well, if you're really stressed at work..... yeah, better try and find one that won't.

9:30 AM
job market's kinda poor at the moment
kinda hoping the SE thing works out, I need to probably send a polite reminder about it

@JourneymanGeek That's a bummer, still, worth to keep an eye and look for something.

been applying XD

9:41 AM
Additionally, according to the bug report itself, simply logging into any network site will register a site visit on sites with unique domain names

mag
@JourneymanGeek Move to germany :D
I've been getting more recruiterspam then usual lately, and not even just for software dev positions

@mag waiting on 2 possible things. Pondering sending out more :D
Moving isn't really an option. Yanno, Ash :D

mag
10:06 AM
bring ash with you
he would be great friends with our office dog

lol
Can't load him on a plane
He's 15, and tbh, while in great shape for a senior dog, is a senior dog

mag
can't you buy a seat for a dog

Oh, yeah. Just realized most international airlines don't accept carry-on pets (the typical American way)
And he's too old to be a checked pet

mag
I would never take a pet on a flight unless I could have them next to me during it

Not to mention having to get all sorts of documents to certify vaccinations, etc. or else they'll face quarantine
@mag Do airlines in your area allow carry-on pets?

mag
10:12 AM
I know my aunt brought her cat over on a flight and not in a cargo container either

The U.S. airlines do, but most of the Asia-Pacific and European ones don't

mag
apparently much to the delight of other passengers

@mag so... thanks to corona...
I literally need to carry him through an entire mall for a haircut...
I hear a lot of "awww"s and guys telling their girlfriends to look at the cute doggie :D

@JourneymanGeek Auf Deutsch, oder hast du deine brücke schon bombardiert und verbrannt?

mag
@JourneymanGeek superwoof
@Rob vielleicht ist die brücke auch resistenter als du denkst

@mag Ah so that's where that weird Dutch grammar mistake in dialects comes from. (als/dan are two different things in Dutch, and people often use 'als' to mean 'dan', while in your sentence they should've used 'dan') ;)

mag
to be honest, my written german leaves much to be desired as well
I want to say about 95% of the text i write is english these days
so in general I might be wrong there too

My written German is ... I don't think I can even get the umlaut right in 'thank you'.
:P

Rob
11:36 AM
@mag Then what were all the complaints for several months about, over one sentence?

mag
@Tinkeringbell danke dir?
vielen dank?
danke sehr?
where's the umlaut at

@mag not das woof

@mag danke schon?
I seem to recall that one has an umlaut

What keyboard layout is typically used in the Netherlands?
Can it type accents?
Don't see those used often/at all in Dutch, unless I'm mistaken

Rob
12:24 PM
Epaulette (; also spelled epaulet) is a type of ornamental shoulder piece or decoration used as insignia of rank by armed forces and other organizations. In the French and other armies, epaulettes are also worn by all ranks of elite or ceremonial units when on parade. It may bear rank or other insignia, and should not be confused with a shoulder mark – also called a shoulder board, rank slide, or slip-on – a flat cloth sleeve worn on the shoulder strap of a uniform (although the two terms are often used interchangeably).Epaulettes are fastened to the shoulder by a shoulder strap or passenten, a...

12:52 PM
@SonictheCuriouserHedgehog QWERTY
We don't use accents much, but usually have our keyboard settings to US
so 'e becomes é

Netherlands uses the U.S. layout?
Or the U.S. International layout?

I guess intl
Setting it to NL does havoc on most keyboards xD

I would have thought they'd be using a derivative of the UK layout
But the U.S. layout (non-International) is also used in India, so...

If I look at the most commonly used webshop its almost all US-int.

Yep, US int here too. I actually like it, when I grew up we had a keyboard where the only way to get ë was to use alt137...
Now I can just use " and e ;)

12:58 PM
alt 137 those good old times
Used to memorize a ton of those

I can only remember alt 137 XD Guess I'm still young :D

Ask an American what Alt Gr is, and they can't tell you

@Tinkeringbell your not that much younger then me, or are you even older?

It's pretty clear that keyboards were designed first and foremost with American users in mind

@Luuklag Ohhh, hard question... I think I was a bit older ;)

1:02 PM
I turn 30 in june, so you tell me xD

You're all old farts to me...
:P

Nov 11 at 20:11, by Tinkeringbell
I'm younger then... by just a few months ;) Turned 29 in August.

And I'm caught in the middle...

@Mithical Kids these days... get off the lawn please :)

@Tinkeringbell Yeah I though we discussed before, so I'm not totally losing my mind

1:03 PM
@Tinkeringbell *coughs, points at RO list*

@Luuklag And I'm glad I actually remembered that conversation XD
Usually such bits of information are immediately discarded again as not important.
@Mithical Okay, but I want to talk to the manager that hired a kid for that job :P

I feel honoured xD
@Mithical see's lots of skeletons

[manager takes no action]

@Luuklag You shouldn't be, usually that doesn't mean much good XD

@Tinkeringbell My point was it's my lawn here, not yours ;)

1:07 PM
@Mithical It's a rental :P I can take it back whenever I want!

Rob
@Tinkeringbell What a coincidence, I know several women who have been 29 (or little less) for more than a few years.

;) In this case, it's real enough. I'm not one of those that refuses to turn 30 ;)

Rob
Not doubting you, but I do the others.
We'll see, in a few years. :D

I'm 37 :D

@Rob Well, if they want to be able to enjoy their last year of being 29, I guess skipping 2020 counts ;)

1:20 PM
@JourneymanGeek I... think you're lying.

Diamonds are always right ...

LOL

@Tinkeringbell 2020 is a Leap Year.

@terdon I was born in 83
I counted!

@JourneymanGeek Damn. Why do I always think you and I were born the same year (80)?
I will take your word for it then.

@terdon cause people keep assuming I'm anything but my age :D

@Rob I believe you'll find that 2020 was a drop year... :P

1:23 PM
and the human looks older :D

@JourneymanGeek I thought you were a 14 year old xD

*snort-laughs*

@Luuklag 15, 16 in april

@Mithical Oh hush. You didn't even have the basic decency to be born in the right century!

@terdon Millennium even ;)

1:25 PM
Indeed. The sheer gall of it!

@terdon Sorry. Blame my parents.

haha blame yomama

mag
I'm at the weird point in my life where i've heard both "ok zoomer" and "ok boomer"
:D

At some point being born in the 80s made you young... but as forty nears, I don't think that's still true.

1:39 PM
@JourneymanGeek youngster! :D

Having kids makes you old by definition @Catija ;)

@Rob rice turned out OK-ish

Looks like I age multiple days a day xD

@Luuklag you beat time, respect. :P

@Luuklag oh. So if I give them away can I get my youth back?

1:41 PM
@Catija Would you ever want to do that?

Rob
@ShadowtheHatterWizard A microwave steamer really helps, if you cook a lot of rice.

@Luuklag give them away? Yes. Every day. 🤣

@Catija You may be in luck if you want to do that.

@Rob Wonder if I could re-use the bottle sterilizer for that

@Catija I think you forgot to read the small letters on the kids. They say "no refund".

1:42 PM
@Catija This morning I did too, but then again, I'll probably end up missing them xD

@ShadowtheHatterWizard I don't need a refund. I'm willing to consider it a sunk cost.

Rob
It wouldn't stand and clump like that, if it weren't so sticky (damp).

@Luuklag kids fight among themselves? Or something else?

@Luuklag they are kinda cute...

@ShadowtheHatterWizard mostly yeah

1:43 PM
@Rob no steamer was involved.

@Catija yeah mine too, sometimes

I'm looking forward to them being more self sufficient.

@Luuklag was there blood? If not, just let them quarrel. ;)

This morning one of the twins went on to hug their big sister as she was crying over not wanting to wear any clothes

@Catija I believe that usually takes 6-8 decades.

1:44 PM
@Catija so no youth back for you. :D
@Luuklag well, she has a point. Clothes are just annoying. :D

@ShadowtheHatterWizard It's pretty cold without them xD

@Luuklag that's why we have fur body hair.
:P

@terdon I'm actually ok with 6-8 years.

:)

2 and 4 is hard.

1:46 PM
That, dear @Catija, is what is known as an understatement.

@Catija What a coincedence
Our twins turn to end of the month, and our oldest is 4,5 now.

I have a hell of a lot of respect for any parent who's had to deal with young children this past year.

@Luuklag I used to want twins.

@Catija trust me, you dont

@Luuklag we stopped using sterilizer when there was a research showing how much bacteria it put in the bottles, or something like that. It was long ago, so pretty sure whatever the problem was it's not relevant these days. :D

1:50 PM
@ShadowtheHatterWizard I think more of a problem is using plastic bottles

hmm.. maybe.

But were planning on stopping all together when they turn 2

@Luuklag yeah. One at a time is bad enough.

Something wasn't right.

Glanced over something reading that using plastic bottles infuses your children with microplastics

1:51 PM
Yeah, heat cause the particles to melt. So no bacteria, but something else not less nasty.

@Catija yeah indeed. We were lucky our oldest came alone, so we already were kinda prepared on what to do with such a creature before we got two of them at the same time.

mag
@Catija One of my coworkers has twins
he says he can't recommend

Rob
It would probably be exponential, think of quads.

@Rob or octomom
@Rob maybe even logarithmic btw ;)

..... the one who downvotes multiple posts by the same author at a two minute interval... is not very smart :P

2:04 PM
Damn, I was just typing a report in dutch and entered random words in English :/

Rob
@Luuklag She is actually quattuordecmom, with 14 children.

@Rob also she has lost her mind xD

Rob
But the last one crawled out, with the keys.

hahaha

Rob
Mystery solved.
Both.

2:33 PM
@Luuklag Then you're old too, and I'm much younger than you than just a few months :P

Agreed @Tinkeringbell

You became of age @ShadowtheHatterWizard?

Good morrow, Meta!

o/

Rob
3:03 PM
@ShadowtheHatterWizard New avatar to go with the name change.

@Tinkeringbell Don't give governments ideas.... This [redacted] year... they are stupid enough to try to skip counting it.... for job retirement purposes

@SPArcheon Ehh, governments don't need me to come up with not so great ideas, don't worry :p

Nicolas Chabanovskii on December 18, 2020
As the number of users grows and we improve our site engine, the social aspect of the network becomes more complicated. With all this social complexity, the CM team must daily answer one simple question: Is the community healthy?

@Tinkeringbell yep, I know.... Someone here managed to say that "at least the pandemic will help to lessen the pressure on public welfare". I am generally quite polite, but that one managed to get even ME to think about a nice quote in the old Black Adder series.
something about a Rutland tree....

@SPArcheon Yeah.... We're bailing out corporations to keep as much people working as possible, and the people that get to keep their job eventually get to pay more taxes as national debts need to be paid off.... Lovely kind of welfare, that.

3:12 PM
@Tinkeringbell In case that didn't come out as expected due to translation mismatch, what they meant was actually "at least we get less pensions / retirements."
Don't know if it was clear enough.

Ohhh... Well it might work that way too :D
There's been a few remarks about a decreased predicted lifespan and consequences for pensions here too, I think the conclusion was that there wasn't any yet :P
@Feeds I hope there'll be a post on MSE about that one, I have questionS :D

mag
@SPArcheon I've heard people make the argument that we shouldn't be concerned about long term damage because most of the long term damage effects people report will just cause a shorter lifespan and not disability, and that it would be an overall boon to the economy later

Rob
In NA they are simply not doing some of the "bailouts", they have offered a crutch (rent freeze) to limp along, and purported essential measures (such as food delivery fees capped) but many say they'll be sunk for sure within the next couple of years.

mag
On a related note I have nearly bent my table banging it from rage

@mag "just cause a shorter lifespan and not disability".... for some values of "just"
and some shades of morality, mostly black ones

3:19 PM
@mag O.o

mag
What gets me is that people say this shit and apparently have no concept of how utterly monstrous it sounds

@mag more probably, they simply couldn't care less.

Rob
Now the business owners who pay wages that compete with Welfare (and the employee subsidies the remainder of fair play) can go collect Welfare in person.

@mag It's a stupid thing to decide for others, but I do think it's a topic more people should pay attention to for themselves, as that can save the people in your vicinity a lot of hurt.

🚽

3:30 PM
@Tinkeringbell Me too.

... That's not good. I think you a.) should've known whether or not there should've been a post and b.) should've been involved enough in this health-indicator project to no longer have any questions?

> In discussion questions, there is a diverse set of opinions. (until they get deleted)

You could propose they count deleted answers too ;)

@Tinkeringbell I've... heard about it but, as far as I'm aware, I've never seen it in practice. I think it was something Tim was working on prior to leaving that Nicolas picked up.

Ah. Well it sounds nice an all.... but my main question is WHY? How is knowing whether or not a meta is 'healthy' going to reduce social complexity? ... also it feels like this may slowly devolve into just hitting metrics and sacrificing quality for the sake of quantity.
It may just be Friday afternoon that is making my brain lag and missing how one thing leads to another though... perhaps I shall read it again tomorrow.

Rob
3:46 PM
@Feeds Such an "Indicator" will be a challenge to devise. On one site's meta we used to Feature meta posts, beg people to visit the meta, refrain from posting ourselves (half dozen of us) so our posts (and names) didn't appear constantly; drowning out any other voice - and still important site issues remained: unvisited, unvoted, barely commented, and less frequently answer or new questions proposed. --- Score that Red, but it wasn't for lack of trying.
To be dubbed The Will Smith indicator.
Will they, or won't they.

oh wait
forgot to edit
:(

@Rob Well, if it's, as the blog states, relative to site size/activity, you may actually still have a healthy meta.
And sure, knowing if a community is healthy or not will probably help CMs.
I just can't make the connection as to how that can be used to reduce social complexity, unless healthy means there isn't too much social complexity.
And well... if posts like meta.stackexchange.com/q/358089/369802 count towards 'healthiness', I hope IPS never gets a 'healthy' meta.

Dunno... a meta being quiet can... just be because the site is old and most stuff is ironed out already.

That too

The important thing is, if a question is asked, does it get an answer from someone... not, whether there's a bunch of questions being asked.

3:54 PM
Well that's something, I guess :)

Rob
@Tinkeringbell Not really, I believe I've stated it correctly. Visiting SE and sorting by Traffic (not perfect, but it's one Metric) we fall flat: or.meta.stackexchange.com/questions vs. mattermodeling.meta.stackexchange.com/questions and double at: patents.meta.stackexchange.com/questions
The site with slightly less and slightly more, both much younger, are comparatively ahead - and not monopolized by a few users.

4:09 PM
Oh.. well then I don't know either

Is a healthy community just one that's measured by a lower than expected level of bitchiness and complaining?

@Catija Meta and MSO are outliers :D

And by "bitchiness and complaining" I mean entirely non-constructive critique. Good critique is healthy.

SU's probably doing fine, but its mostly quiet

Hate it when my hat gets in the way of the start of the chat window.
But, I love my hat.

4:14 PM
I was just knitting on the old site and realised I forgot I have homework to do
This is a regular occurence

also active dosen't mean healthy
cough Bad old days ... :D

There has been as many bad old days as there has been storms. Health is measured by how they're dealt with as well as they're weathered.
