@Damodar No, why, what's up?

@Moshe oh sorry, as i was away to Stackoverflow . Forgotted its rules
sorry for short words

i intimated this to sathya one of Mod

so just asked you , are you mod , to know the status of that issue.

Hi Friends
any mods here

@Damodar Are you having that problem with custom flags still? What browser / version?

ya iam having the same

@Damodar What version of which browser are you using?

IE 7.0.530.13
@jadarnel27 due to this iam unable to put comments on reviewed posts. So iam leaving such posts

1:43 PM
@Damodar What OS are you on?

Windows Xp

@Damodar Have you tried any other browsers on your PC to see if it's just IE7?
(I cannot repeat this problem with IE9 in IE7 mode on Windows 7, not that that's a completely valid test)

@jadarnel27 i dnt tried. I will try in my home and will let you know. Right now iam in office. I have only IE7 in my office machine

kk. Good luck.

@jadarnel27 why cannt it be tested in WIndows XP Proffessional Version 2002 Service Pack 3
with IE7 version 7.0.530.13

1:50 PM
@Damodar Because I don't have either of those on my computer.

@jadarnel27 oh you are testing it on your own machine? Great dude.
@jadarnel27 Taking responsibilty
sure i will let you know by testing it on my own machine

A: Is it OK to reference 'this' when initializing a field?

Anandits fine to pass like what you said

can anybody flag this answer as "it should be as comment"
iam unable to do this

@Damodar You can use the "Not an Answer" reason.
That's what it's there for...

ok

"This was posted as an answer, but it does not answer the question. It should possibly be an edit, a comment, another question, or deleted altogether"

@YiJiangsProble_ A noun used as a nonce?
@Damodar, FYI, most of the mods tend to hang out in the main SE chat rooms. You are more likely to get their help over there. It seems that no one who regularly hangs out in here either a) can help you or b) wants to help you.

2:06 PM
@cdeszaq SE = stackexchange

@Damodar yes
@Damodar The rooms are not particularly active, but chat.stackexchange.com is where they tend to be.

@cdeszaq there was a major changes came . I was away from world of StackOverFlow since 3 months. Before everyone used to be in this chat room discussing here.
@cdeszaq Sure from now i will drop my questions there chat.stackexchange.com

@Damodar Yes, that seems to have changed. Meta in general seems to have quieted down a great deal

@cdeszaq why ?

@Damodar Not sure, but others have noticed it as well. Could be that many people have simply moved to other rooms that are more aligned with their interests

2:13 PM
@cdeszaq ok.

@cdeszaq That explanation makes me worried about the interests of the people that remain in this room.
=)

@jadarnel27 I know, right? What is that we that remain are interested in? Are we interested in interest itself?

I'm interested in your mom.
(yessssss)
Ok, sorry. That was uncalled for. Your suggestion sounds rather philisophical.
@cdeszaq That sounds like it would make us either philosophers or...accountants? Bankers? I don't know who else is "interested in interest" ;-)

@jadarnel27 Marketers would fit there too I would think
@jadarnel27 Nothing wrong with a good "your mom" joke every now and then

@cdeszaq I used to be the worst person when it came to "your mom" jokes.
@cdeszaq I was, almost literally, this guy

2:29 PM
@jadarnel27 Thankfully I never really went through that phase, although do tend to fall into that when I am a bit...err...less than sober

@cdeszaq Oh goodness. I can't imagine how much worse I was when I was drunk. I'm sure it was awful =)

@jadarnel27 But the important part is that you thought you were funny. At least that's what I tell myself.

@jadarnel27 Classy. And it's totally true. Thankfully, SO is the best of both worlds, since it's clearly an MMORPG and it's "work related". (and very much a required tool for any "real" development, IMO)

@cdeszaq Agreed. I like that MMORPG comparison, I think I've seen Jeff Atwood use that on the blog.
@cdeszaq Oh, and I definitely agree that SO is an awesome resource. I wouldn't say it's explicitly required, but it's a gigantic time-saver.

@jadarnel27 Yeah, that's where I pulled it from...somewhere from him anyways. And it's true... unhealthily addictive but without any real goal or end-point.

Haha, yes! It's all about the achievements.

@jadarnel27 If I ever was in the situation of needing to develop something non-trivial and I wasn't able to use SO, I would leave that project. It simply isn't worth my time to re-invent the wheel by solving the same problems that other people already had. Anyone who doesn't understand that simply isn't going to get my time, since they clearly don't value the things that matter. </rant>

4:53 PM
@cdeszaq Good rant =) I certainly would not put up with being blocked from SO either. That is just a huge waste of everyone's time and energy.

@jadarnel27 I need to get my blog going. I keep writing things that have the makings of good blog posts, but I never seem to be able to find the time. I would literally give my left kidney for someone to add more hours to the day or invent something that made me need less sleep. (No, caffeine just puts it off, doesn't actually reduce the need for sleep)

@cdeszaq You need one of those time-turners from Harry Potter.

@jadarnel27 Ahh, yes. That would do it. Happen to have one I could borrow?

@cdeszaq They are ministry regulated. But, I may know a guy that knows a guy.
@Incognito Ick, burn that with fire.

5:10 PM
@Incognito None of those questions have anything programming specific to do with that site, but instead are simply referencing things found on the site. That tag, based on what it's tagged on, has no value and/or is off topic for SO. It might be more on-topic for P.SE, but even that would be a stretch.

Flag them all for deletion?

@Incognito Nope. Just remove the tag. It will go away on its own after a day or two.

@Incognito No, because some of the questions are fine. Simply removing the tag is probably sufficient.

stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/quiz Why do people even make these tags?

@Incognito Because they don't read the FAQ and think "Cool, this forum looks nifty!", which is then promptly followed by "Herp derp, oh look a text box!" (Note: I can't claim that quote as my own...stole it from someone here on SE, but can't remember who)
A number of those quiz questions are OK candidates to be migrated to P.SE

5:23 PM
@cdeszaq Examples?

some of them look like "how do I make a quiz app plz?"

This one needs some editing, but is conceptually a good question, essentially asking "what is volatile actually useful for" stackoverflow.com/questions/72552/…
Since it's more concept that code, P.SE makes sense to me.
@awoodland Yes, some of them are bad, but not all

That's just a "list some personal experiences" request. I haven't been to P SE in a while, but I don't think the community or mods there would appreciate that migration.
Especially because it's really old.

@cdeszaq I'll try an edit on the "what problem does volatile solve?" one if you like

5:29 PM
@PopularDemand Yes, I didn't notice that part, but as a developer who has never really had to use volatile at all, such a question, while a bit at the edge of what is acceptable, does have some rather good answers, and ultimately a correct answer selected, which has both a good (primary) use and a clear example

Onebox, gosh dangit!
That's written by a P SE mod.
The important part:
> Poll and "fun" questions aren't on-topic anywhere on the network, so please get it out of your mind that they can be migrated somewhere successfully. And Programmers.SE is not Stack Overflow's toilet bowl. If you don't want them on Stack Overflow, they should be closed, locked, and/or deleted.

@PopularDemand Yes, and there is currently a lot of discussion over at P.SE about what sort of questions are and are not on topic, including talk of if the FAQ needs to be updated to make things more clear. I agree that it might not be a good idea to migrate it, but I believe that it is on topic, since it discusses "algorithm and data structure concepts" (1st point in the P.SE FAQ).

@cdeszaq What? It's about volatile. That's a bit of a stretch.
I will have to check out the discussion you refer to, though.

@PopularDemand The real issue that question is about is (to me at least) more about the idea underneath that keyword. The concept of shared memory. That is very much a more general programming concept thing than it is a programming-specific thing.
@PopularDemand I'll see if I can dig up some links

that's the best edit I could see to that question, if that doesn't fix it it's VTC time

5:39 PM
@awoodland I like those edits +1 editor points to you :)

@cdeszaq I'll clean a few of the answers up so they match the new question a bit better rather than starting with "yes" :)

@awoodland You 'da man

but yea if he deleted his own question then nuff said..

James McNellisI am having some difficulty compiling a C++ program that I've written. @JeremyBanksʬʬʬ Myself, of course. It's creepier that way.
I've found a couple websites which claim to sell them. (pedobearcostume.com and xmascotcostume.com/pedo-bear-costume), but they look pretty sketchy and it's a decent sum of money to potentially be throwing away on nothing. I'd be willing to pay more to be able to physically go to a place and see it (even try it on).

Make sure it doesn't come from China!

This question would be a candidate for the "What is this I don't even" close reason.

I didn't realize it was from 2009 until I just checked out the migration. I was refraining from VtC until the OP has a chance to clarify... I guess that won't happen.

@JeremyBanksʬʬʬ Indeed. Gamecat has been going nuts with old edits (maybe they're in the /review queue? I don't know).

I didn't notice the date either... I assumed since you were posting it here randomly that it was recent.

Anonymous
@animuson Recent...ly-bumped. :P

@jadarnel27 I've noticed that too! It's irritating when some of those edits leave obvious errors in place. I don't really want to re-bump most of those posts, though.

@PopularDemand Right. I'm sure they're trying to be helpful. Or they're bored. Or whatever =) But it's rather confusing.

7:28 PM
In related news, Stack Exchange is ruining the Internet for me. Whenever I see low-quality content on a non-SE site now -- which happens all the time -- I get frustrated that I can't edit it. I guess the only answer is to stick to SE and Wikipedia. Man, that's insidious.

@PopularDemand - You could just write a greasemonkey script that makes everything on every website contenteditable and persists the changes to local storage. :)

@RobHruska My own personal cleaned-up Internet, huh? The only place this path can lead is a room with padded walls....

Does anyone know what could cause the notification popup to not stay popped up?

Anonymous
That really gets under my skin too, but I'm more often made to look the fool by habits established in this chat. Sending sloppy instant messages, then trying to edit them...

@PopularDemand - Heck, you wouldn't even need to persist it. You'd just edit it once and get the satisfaction of fixing the internet that one time. Come back later, do it again. "Ahhh."

I'm sorry, you seem to have mistaken me for someone with infinite reserves of both time and inner peace.

@gamecat What's up with those, mostly, single character edits on Meta?

@random Is he going to get that notification?
I only ask because I can't autocomplete his name, which I thought was a prerequisite for pinging someone

@Chris Mods have the power to ping anyone from chat using their user id.

> The regular @ chat alerts only notify someone if they’ve been in the chat room in the last day or so (see chat notifications help). But did you know moderators can use a special @@ notification to contact anyone on your site, even if they have never been in the chat room? Moderators can use the @@ super-ping that will always put a notification in the user’s inbox. (copied from here)

8:08 PM
@animuson Clear your cache and that should fix it

@random: It was only a one-time issue with that page. Reloading the page fixed it. I just wondering what would cause it to occur.

@Chris Getting it yes, as pointed out by @PopularDemand, responding is another matter

@random Great, thanks
Just wanted to make sure that I understand how the system works
@PopularDemand Excellent reference, as always

@Chris: You can't, it's random...

> Furthermore, the most awesome mods can use an extra-special @@@ notification to force target users to not only see their messages but also respond honestly to anything on-topic. (I'm totally making this one up)

When did example.com start redirecting to iana.org/domains/example?

Anonymous
For a while before that it was entirely unavailable, IIRC. (Can anybody back me up?)

Feels like it was doing that redirect back in 2009

I think the IANA page existed in 2009, but I don't think example.com actively redirected to it until recently.

@PopularDemand Heh. Isn't that Amish country?

It's a ghost town. A mine fire started there decades ago which causes poisonous gases to leak out of the ground. Still burning.

Oh, right. That town.

@PopularDemand Definitely sounds Mordor-esque

And many of the questions are bad in the first place!

Q: How do I create a new SO user with a random name for each post?

Greg DomjanIt looks like all the rage, so I was wondering what the API is for SO so that when I want to post a new question I could generate a new user with a random id like user12345 and then post 1 question.

Really?
Although it does look like he's adding tags like and to old questions that didn't need them when they were originally migrated here from Stack Overflow

9:08 PM
@Chris I flagged one of the posts he edited. I know random♦ is aware of the problem, but I figured I'd spread the knews.
Where have you been all day @Moshe?

@jadarnel27 I woke up a little later than usual because I was programming really late. Then, synagogue, meeting in the Empire State Building!, helping around the house.

@Moshe Oh. Well that sounds like a fun and productive day =)

@jadarnel27 - Compile this and run it on a text file. It's completely harmless, but awesome.
@jadarnel27 It was. Got an email from a professor last night, standard forward of class mailing list. I responded to the guy looking for a mobile dev intern, so we met.
Works best if the code is a source file.

@Moshe Alternatively, you could "1337-ify" the text file first

@cdeszaq Heh, true.
What do you think though?

9:15 PM
it's fun :)

@jadarnel27 when you run it, let me know. :-)

and pretty well put together +1

@cdeszaq Thank you.
@cdeszaq Should I email it to my professor?
I don't want to be a show off.
But it's AWESOME!

@Moshe I'm not gonna lie, I don't ever do stuff with C++. Can I just create a project in Visual Studio?

@jadarnel27 Not sure. Are you on Windows?
Open the command prompt and see if you have gcc or g++ installed.

9:18 PM
@Moshe You could. I'm sure (s)he would find it entertaining. More impressive (and more informative), however, would be to take that same program and do it in other languages. You get the benefit of having a better handle on how those languages work, and at the same time you make it more accessible to others

@cdeszaq You mean other programming languages, not spoken languages, right?

@Moshe Yeah. (although, spoken/written language translation would be a good exercise in localization...some programming languages make it easier than others too)

@cdeszaq iOS makes it a snap.
@cdeszaq Maybe I'll try Java or C# or Python or Ruby next. Heh, so many languages.

@Moshe Yes, but other environments are a bit more difficult. C/C++, for example.
@Moshe Yes, doing it in an OO language like Java or C#, a more dynamic language like Ruby or Groovy, and then a highly functional language would give you a good exposure to different language types

This is C++. This is sparta.
I should write psuedocode to start with. Then translate it.

9:24 PM
@Moshe Yes, that is probably a good way to go, although what you have is pretty clean and clear so it might work just as well to base it off of what you have. The important part when porting to the other languages is to write the ports in as idiomatically as you can. Don't just use the different syntax, but actually use the language.
And if you really want a challenge, put together a simple GUI for that application in each of your chosen languages (or with a few different GUI frameworks).
It's surprising how far you can take a very simple example and equally surprising is how much it will help you to do so later in life when you have the same sort of challenges but on a much more complex scale.

@cdeszaq Understood. I did that when porting KosherJava to Objective-C.
@cdeszaq Thanks for that point. I'll keep it in mind.
@cdeszaq Not sure how that would work. "Choose a file..." and an output window?

@Moshe Yeah, pretty much. You could extend it a bit to make the parameters tuneable to some extent.

Well, I don't actually use the parameter. Heck, I should make a github repo for this.

@Moshe That's the thing with UI, it can do just about anything...which makes it drive you crazy if you are a divergent thinker (like me)
@Moshe A public repo is always a good idea

Ok, Dad's home. gonna show it to him now.
Shabbat Shalom all!

Is it, in fact, possible to un-bump?

I think only if you were the person to make the original edit.
(the system doesn't view non-changes as changes, so manually reverting to the previous state within the edit window is essentially a noop)
Well, and there was that bug...
