@amWhy the dupe target was not ideal as a faq. If there is a current question that could be used we can promote one. If not somebody could write one at some point.
@amWhy did you try what I recommended? It does not look like it.
If you want your profile to say that you are suspended on the parent site you might want to make sure that your parent site matches the one where you are suspended.
Differently, if it would say what you propose it would also be confusing.
It'd have to say still something else like: "The user is suspended on what had been their parent site, but was changed in the interim."
Anyway, I change your chat parent now to math.se. Let's see if the reason gets updated.

7:28 AM
On inspection it seems that in the meantime there was a short flag inducded ban in addition. Likely this overrides the reason.

4 hours later…
11:18 AM
@quid short? It's 8 days ban.... and yes, looks like it overrides the parent site suspension banner.
Never saw such a long ban due to flags, from what I remember each confirmed flag "gives" 30 minutes suspension, so it means there were 2*24*8=384 (!) flags.... something here is very fishy.

11:45 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask the 8 days ban is form the parent site; the flag ban was only 30 minutes.

@quid nope. I checked on MSE. The message is clearly result of automated chat ban due to flags.
400 flags might mean something very not good at work here. I consider involving a CM.
(e.g. bot/script used to flag and approve the flags.)

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Maybe I did not paraphrase it clearly enough. There is an "inherited" ban from the parent site and in addition there is a 30 minutes flag induced ban that came in while already suspended. Thus almost all of that ban is inherited. But the latest seems to dictate the reason given.

12:04 PM
@quid well, it's over 30 minutes now and the message is still "automatically suspended for posting inappropriate content".
Unless you mean there's a bug, and if in the time of suspension there was automated ban, the reason is "stuck" on the automated ban? @quid
That I can understand, but how can we "prove" it's the case? Can you see chat flag history for that user?

12:18 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask yes.
@ShadowWizardWearingMask this is cumulative.

OK, so we should post a bug report, seeing such a message for a long time isn't nice for the user.

Maybe, but it is a bit different.

@quid what do you mean by cumulative... did you mean $n*30$ min...where n= accepted flag?

There was/is an inherited ban of a duration of several days until time X. If then a flag comes in the ban gets extended until time X + 30 mins and the reason gets updated.
@QueenieGoldstein I mean that flag bans get added to the duration of inherited bans.
Just as flag bans add up.

oh.... I see the bug.

12:24 PM
Got it....btw
Just for a report
@quid when the user was banned...for the first day, I saw the banner saying "this user is currently suspended"....and no mentions of reasons

Update ChatUser Set BanReason='This user has been automatically suspended for posting inappropriate content and cannot chat for @duration` Where Id=@user
And there's no timed job to update this back to previous reason ^

@QueenieGoldstein the other ban happened after two days or so. Thus this is well possible.

@QueenieGoldstein yes that's the "correct" banner.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask the problem is that the bans are not handled separately at all.
It is not clear if the flag ban is already over.
It seems that a new banevent increments the ban duration and updates the reason.

@quid exactly, that's the bug.

12:31 PM
There might be ramifications to this.

And it cause both confusion to everyone, and grief to the suspended user.
@quid yes, to lift the suspension and suspend again.
Then the reason will get updated again.

For instance I assume that an inherited ban is lifted in case the main suspension is llifted, but maybe that gets broken.

hey quid, can you ban someone who has just posted one thing in their profile (A question which says "This is spam")
If so, maybe there's a room for testing out the bug even further

12:50 PM
Nah, convinced enough there's a bug. Report posted. meta.stackexchange.com/questions/354390/…

If a dev will ask, we can further test, but usually the dev can test easily enough anyway.

Hmm seems fair

1:40 PM
@QueenieGoldstein sounds like Daffy
Taffy -> Daffy
I can't unsee it now
Hey! @quid

@ShadowWizardWearingMask as explained "This is correct for the 30 minutes of the automated ban, however the banner never gets back to what it was before" is misleading. There is no separate ban. There is always just one.
The ban durations are added and the reason is that of the last-issued ban.
You also might add a "preexisting" before chat messages. To avoid users getting confused how a chat message could be posted while being banned.
@NordineLotfi hello

2:09 PM
@quid how you've been? :)

1 hour later…
3:17 PM
@NordineLotfi busy or 'busy' depends on who you ask. ;-)

3:58 PM
@quid emphasis on busy I see how it is ;-)

2 hours later…
6:24 PM
@quid Thanks for updating. You initially told me there had been no chat suspension. So you can understand my confusion; I was ill-informed.

2 hours later…
8:52 PM
@amWhy it a bit convoluted, yes, but initially there was no chat suspension and there still is not any of a relevant length; about two days into your suspension it seems one comment got flagged and this added 30 minutes. It could be relevant to keep this in mind as once you get unsuspended on main you'd still have that extra 30 mins in chat.

9:08 PM
Ugh... parents suck.
I've spent too much time today dealing with parents who don't understand FERPA.

@XanderHenderson yeah they propagate suspensions and all.
Oh. You meant something else. :-)

9:39 PM
@quid Yes. But also yes.

10:03 PM
@quid it isn't concurrent?

10:24 PM
@amWhy As I read the logs, you were first suspended from chat for two weeks as a result of the suspension on Math SE (this actually surprised most of the moderating team, as we thought that your chat parent site was Math Educators SE).
Not long after that, your chat suspension was extended by 30 minutes because of a chat flag.
Thus the suspensions are sequential, not concurrent.

10:36 PM
@XanderHenderson that's ridiculous.

10:48 PM
@Xander I did absolutely nothing wrong in chat last Monday, but handle a disruptive user who was subsequently suspended, but not before I cast one chat flag against him.. I should have learned about the thirty minute chat suspension when it was occurred, not long after the fact. Mods have a convenient way of shrugging their shoulders and saying "this is the fact of the matter."
@XanderHenderson It was my parent site.
When the action to suspend me from chat was wrong. "Don't rock the boat": The mod's mantra. Of course you must concur with all actions SE, as a mod, but don't try to change the facts of the matter.

@amWhy The 30 minute chat suspension for "inappropriate content" was automatically applied. Someone flagged one of your comments, and the flag was validated by users from the general voting public.
For the record, the flagged comment was deleted more than a day after your suspension on the main site.

@XanderHenderson And there is no method or way to over-ride it? SE gives too much power to hostile users.

@amWhy My only options are to lift your suspension entirely, or to do nothing.
As far as I can tell, diamond moderators don't have very fine-grained control over chat suspensions.

11:03 PM
@XanderHenderson I appreciate your willingness to explain things far better than @quid ever did, to me. I don't like where this leaves me, but it seems SE once again leaves me powerless. Maybe this chatroom should read "whatever, Xander, backup plan" because you're surely more present than the absconding namesake for the current chat-room owner.

@amWhy I really do understand your frustration, and I sympathize with your situation---in particular, the fact that the listed chat suspension reason is misleading feels like a bug in the system to me.

@XanderHenderson I appreciate your empathizing, @Xander! "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change".... :/

@amWhy Unfortunately, yes, you are going to have to pretend to be an alcoholic, I suppose.

@XanderHenderson Hah! :P ;D

For the record, the weirdness regarding the misleading message has been discussed with one of the community moderators, but I don't think that I can report on any resolution of the issue. It is above my pay grade.
Maybe something is being done?

11:30 PM
@amWhy maybe stop pinging me then at every fitting and not so fitting occassion.
