I'll add a description with the report next time, thanks for posting a comment in Metasmoke @Son

2:58 AM
Thanks for answering that other question, @Cat. It definitely needed that. And for the guidance in the dupe earlier.

:D Sure!
I was half done with the answer when it got closed so I was glad that the old question needed a more complete answer.

I was also mid-answer, but Sonic found that dupe. I searched kinda hard, too. Google-fu and all that.
Mods having that edit approval override is pretty useful, eh?

And users. The OP can do the same thing :)
Though, in that case, the OP was a mod.
Which reminds me...

3:25 AM
Ah, anon edit suggestion, so all I have is an IP. oh well.

Is this a typo?

Heh, I guess so. The policy lock is rather new and rather rarely used to be fair to the editor.
Cat could spruce it up when she catches a spare moment ;D

... I mean... it's not a typo.
Someone just added a third reason when the policy lock was released... so now there's three and whoever added it didn't change "two" to "three".

🚽

3:43 AM
@Catija instant typo

? I think we have different definitions of "typo".

:p
(my first :p emoji)

4:17 AM
@AnnZen Pedantic: that's called an emoticon, not an emoji

Anyone with 10k on so here?

6:42 AM
@Magisch For what?

Ah, sorry, I had misread that as "10k or so".

@Magisch the gist: a high rep user complaining about a question with multiple issues from a new user being closed

@MetaAndrewT. yeah I can tell what it's about but I want to read the whole thing
more out of curiosity

@Magisch You can have it here for the next hour: pastebin.com/L31GnFVz

6:50 AM
thanks

2/ I would say, hold us to account. I feel proud of our team’s follow through on the Q2 community roadmap we posted, and I’m optimistic we will do the same for the Q3 roadmap posted last week. I acknowledge there is still lots of work to be done rebuilding the trust between the company and Community, and my leadership team and I remain committed to that task. I’m proud of the leadership we have in place for Product and Community with Teresa Dietrich and Sara Chipps, and I’m excited to see where we can go together if we build on the momentum in our community engagement and our business. — Prashanth Chandrasekar 7 hours ago
That's a decent comment.

That's for my response isn't it?

@Mithical they do seem to be on a path to improvement right now, that's at least something. I don't expect a good response to my post though, they won't publicly say that the non-technical sites play no role in their strategy anymore

@JourneymanGeek aye
@MadScientist They've never really played a role in their strategy. I'm not surprised.

well, at the beginning of SE 2.0 they did
it just didn't work out as expected

They have absolutely no idea what to do with any site that isn't technical.
If they were smart about it, they could probably actually monetize sites like Writing with partners and even things like Jobs... but they won't.

7:17 AM
@Mithical I don't think that's in their core competency, so dabbling with it is probably not really all that worth trying

Their ad process doesn't seem to work for non-technical topics. Otherwise they could have monetized Arqade in the earlier days

not just that. How would you monetize cooking? You'd have to have someone who is good with the topic to choose advertisers and to make the case to them
I don't think they have a subject matter expert for every medium size community they have

The ad world seems sufficiently broken that you can't just easily get a high-quality selection of ads on a certain topic

@Magisch ads that are actually targetted, tag and site sponsorships....
But SE's sales and marketing focus is very.... conventional

Morning
Nothing like starting your day with making the kitchen floor and rug eat stew

7:30 AM
Let them eat stew!

I can't stew it anymore

rubs temple frustratedly

You must be stewing over this

That doesn't even make sense!

as if we ever do ...

7:33 AM
You sometimes come dangerously close

@M.A.R. Usually, if I drop something, I clean it up. Our kitchen floor is a very slow eater.

Anyway my undershirt is also eating stew but I'm like screw it.
Like a boss
And I'm eating stew
@Tinkeringbell The rug is still eating stew and I dunno how to clean it up
It was a goner the moment it spilled on it

@rene Hey I'm a terribly misunderstood artist, OK! My methods might be a tad bit unconventional but they're all strokes of natural beauty

Herman Brood would agree, had he still lived.

7:40 AM
@M.A.R. Sure... sure...

VTCs Herman as too Brood

@M.A.R. Put it outside in the snow!

That is rude! You know it is mid-summer ...

@rene MAR is on the other side of the world, right? Then it's winter there, right? :P

right, right ...

stares angrily into the Netherlands on the world map
We're not even that far. I dunno what @Journey does with polar bears around all the time though

@M.A.R. Please don't stare too hard, I don't want them to raise the terrorist attack alert level ;)

Haven't heard much about terrorist threats since the 'rona broke loose.

@Mast They're socially distancing like respectable responsible terrorists

@M.A.R. We don't have them anymore. The weather is... unbearable...

Everyone's woken on the right side of the bed today and I woke up and I was still at the same spot
Maybe the side not facing the Netherlands

8:17 AM
I usually wake up on the right side of the bed. The left side is claimed by my wife.
What did the Netherlands do to you?

waves awkwardly Err, so I just noticed that the tag excerpt for on the Tags page starts with the words "OFF-TOPIC", which is not really ideal. It seems like a small thing to make a post about, and at the same time I'm also not sure what combination of words will ensure that first part ("GENERAL DEBUGGING QUESTIONS ARE") is not cut off. It'll probably be annoying if I try out various suggested edits, so I thought I might bring it up here.

Oh?
Heh, you're right.

looks like it got caught up in the regex for stuff like "use this tag for question that are about..."

Should've been:
> GENERAL DEBUGGING QUESTIONS ARE OFF-TOPIC. Use this tag for a reproducible problem on this site that you believe is due to a mistake, malfunction, or programming error.
@Mithical I would've expected the regex to filter part of the second sentence, not the first.

Heh
To think though that it deterred anyone from posting a bug report would require thinking that people read, and that's a huge leap of faith.
Except maybe for Brahadeesh

8:33 AM
Still not ideal.

user313042
@M.A.R. XD

@Brahadeesh fixed

user313042
@Mithical Great! :)

Heh, mine's bigger.

this isn't a contest...

Bigger
@JourneymanGeek Yeah it is

What if it is?

I have a 4k screen ;D

@MadScientist Out of the first 20 sites / sorted by traffic the non-technical sites get over a million visitors per day; along with the numerous visitors to the remaining hundred+ non-technical sites with much lower traffic. --- While it may not be 'part of the strategy' such sites have avid users, people who are not 100% nerds, and trimming the fat may simply leave them with meat that is too lean to be tasty.

Convenient way to see hour old votes.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask I have 5K:

why would you buy 11 lbs of chocolate at once

@Magisch that's probably a professional pack for bakeries

fair enough, so melting/baking chocolate
I found out most chocolate will lose/alter its taste after you melt it

oh
there's a specific way to melt it
called tempering
or you can cheat and sous vide it

1:44 PM
I tried to melt chocolate once and wound up burning it

@Tinkeringbell holy crap, do those even still exist?

You bet ...

Rob
@Mithical Use a double boiler to avoid overheating; don't rush it or get water in the chocolate, causing it to seize.

@Bart Yes. I just ate a bag of them this weekend :D

a bag ...

1:59 PM
I know.
There's a reason for morbid obesity. In this case, it's that bag of Tikkels.

Rob
⬑ Just have one chocolate bar.

Yeah, I admit that if I have a bag of drop at home it won't stay closed long or lives another day ... so ... just trying to navigate in the AH past the candy .... it is hard.

@rene It's gotten harder now some of the paths are one-way-traffic too!

The best way to deal with candy is to refuse to buy it
you will inevitably eat too much and feel bad afterwards
I totally didn't eat that pack of fruit gummi bears in a single day and nobody can prove it

If it was sugar free...

2:10 PM
hell no, i'm convinced those are actually poisonous

Can users view deleted user's profile?

@rene only slightly jealous

sorry ...

2:15 PM
@rene Mmmmmm
Share?

@user400654 theoretically, they can, right?

@AnnZen If you continue using the archive websites you use... yeah. Using only SE? No.

@Spevacus okay

@rene Ewww. Sweet drop.

Rob
Ask on Meta.

2:17 PM
@Tinkeringbell Oh, okay. What do you prefer?

@Spevacus archive websites?

@rene The pink autodrop cadillacs? :P

Dubbel zout or riot!!!

Mostly salty drop, schoolkrijt or Tikkels.

@AnnZen Webcache, wayback machine, etc.

I need to convince my friend to send me the special chocolate again
he's from switzerland they have this particular chocolate that I just can't find in germany

What kind?

Lindt?
It costs a fortune here, but worth any cent/penny/whatever small currency in your place. ;)
So, we found how to drag @Bart here!
@JNat cross site spammer with a special name for you. Enjoy and thanks! ;)

Rob
@Magisch Easy to find swiss-chocolate.com is located in Switzerland and sells online.

@Bart Dubbel zout is really nice too.

Hello, y'all.

hello

5:13 PM
Is there an auto-downvote feature when you flag a post as spam?

@Ollie Yes.

@DavidPostill what about an abusive flag? Or others?

@Ollie only for spam & rude/abusive

@MetaAndrewT ah.

And if a VLQ flag on an answer is marked helpful
Unless they changed that

5:16 PM
I think they may have changed that because I don't remember seeing that. Though I may just not have noticed!

Dunno if it has been changed since I became wary of editing auto-VLQ-flag answers...

Here's the original at least
> The VLQ flag now carries a downvote from community. It is like "spam flag lite", meaning, no reputation penalty but like spam, it incurs a downvote from the community user.

If a post is edited, any pending VLQ flags are now cleared (without harm) from the post. It is unclear that a post is still VLQ if it has been edited since it was flagged.
I'm like 90% certain the second one is not true...

Going now, ta!

Q: Let's Remove The Auto Downvote On Validated VLQ Flags (On Questions)

Tim PostCurrently, flagging a post as very low quality causes two things to happen: The post is flagged for moderator review The community user casts a downvote on the post if the flag is validated Optionally, the flagger can also cast a downvote. Some strange magic happens if the post is subsequentl...

hmmm

At the very least, I remember having to upvote an answer after editing it since --while it's not that great-- it doesn't deserve a score of -1 :/

5:39 PM
@Ollie cya!
@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz I was in something like that in USA, forgot the name. :)

@Rubiksmoose That post is historical. The meat of that discussion is further down in the comments, even before here:
@shog they're too busy answering the crappiest of crap questions, and extremely well. No matter how many negative votes the question gets, they'll still earn +40 or more for a good answer... and if the question is closed, that doesn't affect their ability to continue to gain rep from their good answer to that godawful question forever. Until I click "delete" on the parent question, that is.. (now, if the answer is Eric freakin' Lippert quality I won't be deleting the question.) Anyways, point being: edit crap questions before answering, or just.. don't answer at all. — Jeff Atwood Jun 3 '11 at 5:42
With spam flags at least, (as of a couple of weeks ago), retracting the flag doesn't undo the automatic downvote - though the user who the automatic downvote was made on behalf of can undownvote.

@Makyen Can a post be deleted twice?

7:40 PM
@AnnZen As long as the post is undeleted prior to being deleted again, a post can be deleted an unlimited number of times.

I don't recall this being undeleted before, but it got deleted again.

@AnnZen You can look at the timeline to see the history of actions on the post. The revision history also shows deletions and undeletions, and some other post actions.

possibly a mistake

@Makyen Timelines lead to page not found.
@Makyen What about the two removed messages here?

@user400654 Run it under a stream of cold water first ;)

7:47 PM
💣🐄🥩🧑‍🍳🍽️🍷😮🚻🛏️🛌😴💤

@AnnZen Yes, you will not be able to reach that page at this time.

"removed" accompanied by a loss or gain of rep indicates a user (and their votes) were removed

@user400654 No, that will be "user removed".
It's clearly a post because the title of the post is accompanied by the removed.

ah
well why ask

So, it seems you already know what happened. What's the question again?

7:50 PM
:shrug:
the previous one you asked about was undeleted, and promptly re-deleted. likely a mistake, or just clearing the undelete votes for whatever reason. don't really see anything of interest there

Okay, but the second one still confuses me.

if a post is deleted, you lose any rep gained from it
?

But it shows deleted on the same post twice in a row.

can't really comment on why there's two entries without seeing the post

@AnnZen That appears to be the removal of your net reputation gain from the answer on that question and 2 points which I assume you received for editing the question, which has also been deleted.
@Makyen Note that these are just educated deductions based on information available to any >10k user, along with your screenshot.

7:56 PM
No edits were performed on the posts in that page.

@AnnZen Your usercard is clearly displayed as the most recent editor for the question.

Okay, maybe I can't see it.

@AnnZen I understand, but I wouldn't have made the statement that it was the most likely thing, based on viewing the question page, unless I'd seen that you edited the question.

@AnnZen My mistake, I was looking at the wrong post.
@Makyen How do you link your message to your earlier message?

@user400654 you can reply to your own message by prefixing your new message with :messageid

8:06 PM
:messageid oh really
?

well
with the actual message id
you can get it from the permalink link

@AnnZen test

could be made easier with a userscript

@AnnZen The process @user400654 described is accurate (adding :<message ID>). However, I have a userscript which adds the reply button to my own posts, so I just clicked on the reply button.

@JohnDvorak I suspect this is not possible. Without an edit, there's no reason for the system to re-evaluate your message's text to see if it's a reply. Replies are indicated as a separate field in the database, or at least it's a separate field in the message event data. There's every reason to have designed the system so the evaluation of the text checking for replies, Markdown, etc., only happens when the message is initially posted, or when edited. It would be wasteful if done at other times.

Hi

Out of curiosity:
Can a site mod manually set a post into _community wiki_ state?
(I know: Curiosity killed the cat ;-D )

11:28 PM
yes.
for questions they have to do that anyway as the user doesn't have that option any more

Why doesn't the +100 association bonus cover 10-rep-requirement-highly-active posts? If you're trusted, shouldn't it?

@Ollie Yeah, some users were so trusted with it that the rule was added. We can't have nice things

@rene maybe nice things all the time.
"We can't have nice things" seems kinda unfair.
But still.

Well, it is unfair to those that use the privilege responsively, yes.

11:39 PM
@rene how do you earn the bonus? I didn't even know there was one until I saw a green +1010 in the Achievements Icon :)

@Ollie if you hit 200 rep on any site, you get +100 on all sites

@NobodyNada does it seem fair to you to raise that to 300 on any site?

@Ollie why would it need to be raised?

@NobodyNada, well, it could filter out some of the more...dodgy users, and also make them more of an associated user.
Also 200 rep seems a little easier than I'd like, but it's not up to me.

@Ollie perhaps, but IMO 200->300 wouldn't really make that big of a difference

11:46 PM
@NobodyNada yeah...I guess so.

All it means is that you can upvote and comment anywhere in the network, which really isn't that dangerous

Going now, ta.

I could be wrong though, I don't really have first-hand experience with many "dodgy" 101-rep users
