6:03 PM
Hello, @y'all.

\o

Hi @Ollie and also @everyone!

Hey. So. Quick straw poll... who's had/still going on a vacation trip this year?

What's vacation
STV is now paid/premium/subscription right?
@Ollie Hi there

Like, literally? Not me.
@M.A.R. Hi there.

6:09 PM
@M.A.R. You know, those few weeks a year you're not enslaved to a boss, so you're instead a slave of consumerism and stressing about relaxing?

vacation as in day-off, yes, but certainly not a trip...

this ^^^

Quick question for y'all

I'm calmer now. I apologize if my earlier comments raised any hairs. In my defense, I was earlier musing about why there's always an imbalance in a society's ethical dilemmas, which is really no one's fault

Should we be able to follow locked posts? Can we already?

6:11 PM
@Tinkeringbell OK what's boss
Is it some means of transportation?

@M.A.R. In your case, teacher, perhaps?

OH MY GOD RAISE THE ALARMZ

@Ollie I think there was a report about that already.

@Tinkeringbell really? Where?

Q: Cannot follow locked posts; wrong error message when attempting to do so

pkambI just visited the question here, which is locked as a "community effort": What is a historical lock, and what is it used for? I (legitimately) wanted to "Follow" the question so that I would be notified if the status of those types of questions changed in the future. When I press the "Follow"...

6:12 PM
@Ollie We should, doesn't make much sense why we shouldn't

since SE system is mainly made of... votes... I think following locked posts is currently blocked

Should there be any restrictions on following posts?

I agree it doesn't make sense though

Basically, the first three hits when you type 'follow locked' in the search bar ;)

Kids these days.
Back in my day every feature was introduced as a bug unless proven otherwise

6:14 PM
like, upvote/downvote = votes, close/reopen/delete/undelete = votes, follow = votes, thanks = votes, edit = votes, comment = votes

i will most certainly go on a trip at some point this year, though, i don't consider most trips vacation

Give it a couple of years, lots of bugs will slowly slowly dissolve away

vacation is staying at home and doing nothing

When we pay a visit to grandma, it's often a two-hour rollercoaster of misery in the back seat of a car. I don't consider that a vacation either

@user400654 I do agree with that. Staying home, that is. I like to do nothing, or watch TV, crochet, drink...
Make a puzzle.

6:16 PM
Protip: If you ever paid a visit to Iran, move around with helicopters only, for the sake of your backbone

I'm glad to hear there's more people that are saying 'no way' to travel right now ;)
@M.A.R. Did you see the earlier messages about the flying car?
Might be an option too :P

I saw it but I didn't read it

@M.A.R. looks pricey than a bone...

@MetaAndrewT. It also comes with lifetime health benefits, like being able to walk
Our roads are apparently very dangerous. There was this chart where red countries were with the highest number of accidents or fatal accidents or something like that, and we were a pomegranate
Half of it is the roads' fault, the other half the cars, and the third half the drivers

though... i likely won't take a trip this year. most of my trips involve going to see family, work on their houses/computers etc, but... it's easy to say no, and would be the smart thing to do for now

6:22 PM
@user400654 my computer iz bork. can u fix ??? kthxbai
Lol what's up with Libya?

@M.A.R. Reminds me of when I was in Kuwait many years ago, drivers would just go straight through red lights, presumably with the belief that Allah would keep them safe ... at the road side (in the adjacent desert) there were always many slowly rotting car wrecks ...

Rob
@M.A.R. Maybe incoming is a risk, as well as other vehicles.

> Roads in conflict-riddled Libya, where petrol is cheaper than mineral water, rank among the deadliest in the world.

> Disregard for traffic rules, a dilapidated infrastructure and cars that fail to meet safety standards combine to make road accidents in Libya more lethal than incidents involving weapons.

Rob
Thanks.

@DavidPostill If they said something like that they were kinda joking. Here at least, it's some sort of self-deprecating humor coating a cheap cop out, and it's often meant in a lighthearted way. Like, we have a saying, "Nothing happens to Bam's eggplants", meaning "I'm a loser and bad things only happen to good people"

Lists a whole number of reasons why ...

Interesting, even though sometimes I'm already afraid of traffic in Indonesia...

@M.A.R. Maybe, but is one reason to explain the large number of accidents.

People also used to massively disregard traffic rules here, although they've been more ruly recently AFAICT
I think they drive Korean or Western cars often in Kuwait?
People here mostly only drive "Iranian" cars (which is mostly just an excuse for a bunch of arseholes to gulp down tons and tons of money). This Big Auto is also state-backed, and there are really heavy tariffs on foreign cars, two hundred something percent if I'm not wrong.
So, I personally think unsafe vehicles and VERY unsafe and substandard road conditions are really downplayed as factors contributing to fatality rate here.
OTOH, Greenland is really safe. My heart goes to all the polar bears.

6:34 PM
Aren't Western cars have flipped seating compared to Asian? Left vs right driver?

Not sure it's so simple a distinction as Western vs. Asian

Q: Are there views Meta does not approve of?

Rolf of SaxonyIt's not a big deal but a comment I left on Leaving the site and the network - mid election is not the best, but there's no point in staying , basically commiserating with Yvette on her leaving, was removed without explanation. If one's comments, which I don't believe were rude or abusive are goi...

Of course there are . . . wait, the drama still goes on.

🤐

@M.A.R. Regardless of that drivers still have a responsibility to drive in a manner that gives them time to avoid crashes/accidents. If your car is unsafe / roads are unsafe that puts even more responsibility on the driver ... in the UK we teach drivers to drive safely according to the conditions, whether that is the weather, the road surface or their cars.

@user400654 I thought it was gonna be something about downrates and modz censorship
@DavidPostill Shrug I guess no one crashed intentionally

Q: Improved experience for users with review suspensions

Yaakov EllisThis post details the first in a series of releases related to the ongoing work on Review Queues. It focuses on changes to the ways in which users who have been suspended from reviewing are notified of this event. These changes will be going live in the next few days (post to be updated when all ...

@Rob Meh, don't have VPN on

He's done it again 👏 🙏
@Rob starred it, will check it out later

Rob
@YaakovEllis hopefully the Review suspensions will be available on MSE too.

6:58 PM
@Rob Sure, want one?

Pls no suspenderino

@Rob network wide

Rob
@Tinkeringbell Several, but I'm not going to list the guilty parties; let the software send it to a human reviewer who determines which of the reviewers is wrong and who made the best Review decision.

@Rob I meant whether you would want one so you could see what the new UI looks like for banned users :P

@Tinkeringbell You know I've no way to return the favor.

MSO Election ends in 40 minutes.

Only the meta Stack Overflow election? ;)

Imagine if the two sites didn't share mod teams.
Yikes

@M.A.R. One more won't harm, especially one of yours ;)

@Spevacus and now you know what MSE was like in the early days
....before my time

7:23 PM
Hello again.

All that SO drama without the SO mods being able to extinguish the fires.
That had to have been fun.
Hello again Ollie!

@Tinkeringbell Lalala cough cough clears voice Lalalalllaaaaaaa Get ready for some operaaaaa chokes on hairball

The Fat Lady sings :)

👋

@Spevacus I never envy them their job.
It takes a very steady person to moderate that.

7:24 PM
@Tinkeringbell And now we see the violence inherent in the system!

Meta SE by comparison is quite tame. Heck, take the last SO debacle a day or two ago. Not much flow-over, JMG comment-locked a question for a day and that was that.

Rob
I edited to add a comma, which it accepted but now doesn't show; and it won't let me edit again. :|

@Spevacus hey, don't judge the book by its cover
They've had to shovel through some thick sh!t.

@Spevacus Yeah. I wish we had comment locks back in September (we didn't, did we?)

@CodyGray I tip my hat for the fact that you took the time to reply at length. So thank you for that. "Deleted in error" or "outlasted its usefulness" both seem a little thin. I'm far too old and experienced (in life, if not SO) to not see the writing on the wall. I'll stick to answering questions, as that at least, is not yet beset with politics but even that's changing. Once the "tarring and feathering", along with the "dusting" have been completed, you need to look about yourself and ask what is left? Will it be a shiny new citadel or a clean echo chamber? — Rolf of Saxony 4 hours ago

7:26 PM
absolutely judge a book by its cover; that's what they're for

Rob
Better than runny.

So this puts the responder in a dilemma. If we insist, we kinda lose, and yet, how can we correct Rolf's "echo chamber" assumption?
Yvette's departure meta post is highly upvoted at this moment.
@Mithical tsk tsk tsk former Literature mod, people.

@Tinkeringbell December, it seems, was when you guys were granted that ability
A good addition imo

@Spevacus Yeah. That was kinda late to the party ;)

You should judge a book by its babum opening.

7:28 PM
@M.A.R. who believes that you should only read books you enjoy and the cover is a great way to make an initial assessment... especially the back cover

Smell. Books are judged by smell.
And both new and dusty old smelling ones are great.

Rob
> Will it be a shiny new citadel or a clean echo chamber?

you don't have time to read every book so don't even try - just try to pick the good ones

Rob
The pandemic brought us both.

Here's a starting sentence: "Maria, I cannot be with you my love, for I will always be the alligator in the room" said David, pulling the trigger

7:29 PM
*closes book, puts on swap shelf*

@Mithical That's overly simplistic. How do you decide what you enjoy if you haven't experienced it yet? You need to either read reviews, select based on some criteria, or look at the cover.

@M.A.R. Where the wild 🌹 grow?

If humankind didn't exist, they'd be the one wrecking the world instead
@ShadowWizardWearingMask It was too much fertilizer, it was poisoning the plants
Rush Hour 1 is on TV

@MetaAndrewT. no. The beaver will eat the 🌹 and ruin the song.
@M.A.R. no rash?

Breathing in the freezing air cools you inside too. It's great, except everyone banging on your door trying to let the cold out; and yaking at length.

@Tinkeringbell, I prefer my waffles on a breakfast plate, not on Meta :)

Same here, though breakfast? They might be a bit too sweet for that, even for me!
They'll do as a snack :)

I'll be logging out now, see y'all.

Mrs. Claus (also known as Mrs. Santa Claus) is the mythical wife of Santa Claus, the Christmas gift-bringer in Western Christmas tradition. She is known for making cookies with the elves, caring for the reindeer, and preparing toys with her husband. == Origin == The wife of Santa Claus is first mentioned in the short story "A Christmas Legend" (1849), by James Rees, a Philadelphia-based Christian missionary. In the story, an old man and woman, both carrying a bundle on the back, are given shelter in a home on Christmas Eve as weary travelers. The next morning, the children of the house find an...

Victoria Claflin Woodhull, later Victoria Woodhull Martin (September 23, 1838 – June 9, 1927), was an American leader of the women's suffrage movement. In 1872, she ran for President of the United States. While many historians and authors agree that Woodhull was the first woman to run for President of the United States, some have questioned that priority given issues with the legality of her run. They disagree with classifying it as a true candidacy because she was younger than the constitutionally mandated age of 35 (Woodhull's 35th birthday was in September 1873, seven months after the March...

@Mithical Nice. Both are very good choices, I think, from the little I've seen so far :)

I can't vote for elections on MSO... and I must admit I usually don't even keep track. This one spilling over to MSE changed that a little.

@Rob I see. Only Ed. All good then! 👍

@Tinkeringbell Indeed! I've mostly interacted with them for Charcoal stuff and they seem like lovely people.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Did I miss something? You're not sick, are you?! worries

@Rob we have A/C in every room, house was renovated couple of years ago. ;)

Rob
🆒

8:20 PM
@Mithical thanks!
@Tinkeringbell didn't miss because I didn't tell before. A kid who is with my son at school every day was diagnosed today as Corona positive, so all kids in the class are sent to quarantine.

Ah, that sucks :(
I hope nothing comes your way!

Since 7 years old kid can't be in quarantine alone, all family has to do it.

@Tinkeringbell thanks! Not worried for myself, but rather for people who are at greater risk who were in contact with me.

I'm not much of a 'going out' person, but I'd hate not being able to go for an hour walk a few times a week!

8:24 PM
i mean... that's one way to initiate a lockdown without initiating a lockdown

Yeah, that's true. It's definitely better to quarantine a few than have a full lockdown, if you can get to it early enough!

@user400654 nah, overall around 100k people in Israel are in quarantine, out of 7M citizens. Hardly a drop in the sea...
So the 6.9M not in quarantine keep spreading the Corona all over the place... 😳

we're starting to cross the 1500 positive a day threshold now

@Tinkeringbell most of the times there is a delay of few days, so I'm afraid not really early enough.
@user400654 same here. MoH says 2000 is the red line. (for a full lockdown)
Though probably it will get to 3000 before it actually happens.

We've had cases almost double (from around 500 to almost a 1000) the past week, R is now 1.29... :/ We're not going to do great either, I believe.

8:31 PM
a month ago our "bad days" were 250 cases

Human factor is always the weak spot.

Rob

now we're hitting 1500 and people are still like "Oh it's fine it'll go away, i don't need a mask,"

Rob
There's definitely some hot spots.

@Rob waves
@Rob not really. The empty or less crowded spots are simply places without people.
(or without Corona checks)
Compare to population density maps, and you'll have a match.
@user400654 exactly
Can't help thinking that if the symptoms were more severe (e.g. becoming a zombie 🧟‍♂️ ;)) people would take it more seriously.

8:37 PM
i mean, they're already pretty severe?

Rob
North America is really soaring too, since the 4th of July (Independence Day); where people now just do whatever, though a large number remain responsible.

@user400654 Not enough, it's like bad case of flu.

Rob
It can cause organ damage, including neurological problems.

And since "ordinary" flu also kills older people or people with other health issues, it's easy to underestimate Corona.
@Rob yup. Still, high recovery rate and lack of actual detail about post Corona symptoms.
One good thing, I'll be back to 5-6 hours of sleep.

@user400654 A disease with a mortality rate of around 10 percent is exponentially more scary than one with 5.

eh, depends though

@Ollie there used to be, but meta is no longer fun
And I dunno if that's a good or a bad thing, it's just a natural consequences of being bigger

8:52 PM
with such a high mortality rate, they'd need to be unsystematic but contagious, or for it to take a decent amount of time to result in death for the spread to be uncontrollable

The thing with COVID is it's still a distant thing for most people. Something that we heard in the news and got an epinephrine rush for a few months ago.

Rob
Plague and Ebola have much higher mortality, and uglier death. It's the seemingly low consequences that people think might result from C19 that leads to the carefree attitude and the continuing spread.

or the fact that you could get it with mild symptoms, brush it off as just another cold, and spread it

Consequently, as is the 21st century humanity's wont, we're looking to justify or rationalize not having to wear something that makes us uncomfortable.
@user400654 That's also one other thing, albeit true, that people use to justify not being careful

it's all fine and dandy... until it's not

Rob
8:56 PM
The right to make the wrong decision, no matter the cost; until it was legislated against.

It's just humans being lazy. We're more technologically advanced than we ever were, so people are thinking to unbuckle the proverbial belt and let loose.

like, oh, we're only using 10% of available icu beds, it's fine, we can just ignore it
(lets ignore the fact that said bed usage has doubled in the past 2 weeks)

@Cerberus Oh but you're in the cold, cut-and-dry Europe. If your fatal accidents per year is a smaller stat, it must be because you do not possess the American freedom to go crash into something.
