I take it <kbd> syntax doesn't work in chat?
<kbd>Tab</kbd>
nope

Basically all the html extensions to markdown don't work

Rob
12:15 AM
That was the busiest that Happy Hour has been in a while!

lol... work
One day "GEEK! WE ARE SHORT OF PEOPLE! CAN YOU COVER?"
Yesterday
"GEEK! YOU HAVE TOO MANY DAYS OFF ACCUMILATED! DON'T COME IN NEXT WEEK!"
(turns out I am actually one day short, unless I pre-emptively take one of my CNY days, which I did)

🤦🏽‍♂️

Rob
as long as you're getting 1 1/2 it's probably better to have the cash.

12:33 AM
they don't encash
also they pay for 8 hour days when they do and we work 12 hour days
and no 1 1/2

Rob

1:16 AM
( we work ~40 hour weeks - as 36 or 48 hour weeks)

@JourneymanGeek In North America some people get paid 4X for working Christmas, 3X for NYE, otherwise just 2X.

@Rob our system is basically you get a day off for a public holiday in a month, whether or not you work
In theory, if its your cultural holiday - you use that on the actual holiday

Rob
I'd have taken NYE off, that Drone Show in the Singapore harbour was fantastic!

I wasn't working NYE

Rob
Here a very short video showing a bit of the fireworks, and how advanced that the Drone Show was; much longer video is needed to do it justice:

@Rob In the meantime, all Prague got was a lousy videomap that didn't actually map... or even video.zpravy.aktualne.cz/regiony/praha/…
And the Czech lion - symbol of pride as a nation - has been given the face of a friggin pomeranian.

The st. Ludmila church gets some pretty good videomapping during the yearly Signal festival.
This one's from the Astronomical Clock, and I'm about to see it for the first time myself: youtube.com/watch?v=u4LVEAiZJyg
Those you linked are pretty awesome

Last year Shenzhen did all the buildings in the downtown core, the alignment and transfers from building to building appear seamless:

There's yearly contests called "iMapp Bucharest", with a larger building of similar design as your building. This video gets really good halfway through: youtu.be/yNYgcRqdNqw --- Here's the technical BTS video: youtu.be/rxGqXh5DjPU

Am I the only one that is thinking that SE could have faked Monica's post saying she can't say anything more?

@FreezePhoenix .... that's a whole new level of mistrust.
But that would pretty much have been a whole new level of complete and utter stupidity, and corporate suicide by lawyer.

That doesn't answer whether they're the only one thinking like that. But given the rise of people that believe the earth is flat and vaccines cause autism... I don't doubt there's people out there that could be thinking the same.

@Tinkeringbell true
But someone somewhere might be.

Fact: Monica has announced termination of the GoFundMe campaign on the GoFundMe page.
Also, I believe that generating new posts under someone else's account would be entirely inprecedented

You just need to go through 12 proxies

1:30 PM
Cool. Can we now go bust the ancient aliens theory? :D

It was martian mice.
Trying to eat the moooooon

@JourneymanGeek Fun fact: My first assignment at university was to practice academic writing and citing sources... I went with an essay on ancient aliens and got almost full grades XD

@JohnDvorak They own the system, they are the system, they can control what we see on the system.
As you can understand, I have reason to distrust people who are cornered on their own domain.

Rob
Like what you just wrote ...

@Tinkeringbell Biker Mice . FROM MARS

1:36 PM
This is true. I should not have come here looking for an answer...

Stack Exchange has no authority over GFM

@JourneymanGeek Hmm. I'm sure it was about little greys.

Ugh, younguns

You know, big eyes, even bigger heads to hold all the intelligence, flying saucers and pyramids as landing places :P

@JohnDvorak Was the announcement for termination on GFM, or on SE?
@Tinkeringbell What about... traditional... Aliens... Xenomorphs...

1:38 PM
both

@JourneymanGeek Am I missing something?
An obscure pop culture reference?

Yes :D

It isn't loony tunes, is it?
That martian was weird but not a biker or mouse, IIRC :P

Biker Mice from Mars is a science fiction action animated series created by Rick Ungar that began airing in 1993, in the United States and lasted for three seasons. It follows three anthropomorphic mice motorcyclists named Throttle, Modo, and Vinnie who escape a war on their home planet Mars before arriving to defend the Earth from the evil that destroyed their homeland (the Plutarkians) and to one day return to Mars. The mice's signature weapons consist of a cestus and a laser (Throttle), a bionic arm (Modo), and flares (Vinnie). Despite the frequent battles, no blood is shown, no firearms are...

Ahh. I was two years old back then, and I didn't get to watch much international TV series until I could read subtitles :P
Then dad started me on MASH and Knight Rider.

1:40 PM
Ok, your dad has some class
If he got you on batman TAS, I can't even grumble about kids these days :D

I know, he's a good guy sometimes. I feel kinda bad he so often gets stuck between mom and me :/

And he really could help more with housework.
@JourneymanGeek Nope, no batman....

Most dads are terrible with that

Hmm. I see a lot of guys help out.. but they're of a different generation ;)

1:43 PM
lol or ended up actually having to take care of themselves

That too ;)

I'm rusty with laundry, and I hate doing dishes. I am pretty good with mopping, but I have a few... cheats.
Oh and cooking
I've never burnt water, or poisoned anyone by accident

Once I get my own apartment, one of the first things I'll do is get a wireless vacuum cleaner, and a single kind of floor.

Vacuuming here means you're constantly switching mouth pieces and vacuum settings for everything: Different thing to vacuum the wood, carpet, stairs, and then mom had the genius idea of getting herself fabric covered nightstands, that need yet another different kind of vacuum piece/setting :/

Oh, and no stuff on the floor that you need to pick up to vacuum behind.

1:47 PM
I kinda want a dyson but $$$$$ :(

Either everything goes straight up against the wall, or with enough room around it that the vacuum fits around it.
@JourneymanGeek I'll probably end up getting one too.

I... might just leave most of the mess at my parent's place and move stuff as I need it :D
I mean other than my PC and maybe my chair, I don't really see myself needing to move much

I do think everything I have here now will come with me. I spent a few days this past summer vacation sorting stuff out and throwing out whatever I don't want to take with me.

Rob
A lesson on investigating one's theories before presenting them to others:

@Tinkeringbell well 2022's the earliest
lots of time :D

1:51 PM
That's true. Mine will hopefully be finished late 2020, or early 2021.

and if I'm still at this job, I might just clear leave when I'm sorting out the new place

I guess if one of my friends is free I can go "Hey, could you house sit and sign for stuff?"
She lives nearish to there and probably would enjoy the quiet

I'm guessing, if everything goes well, I'll be having a late summer vacation this year to get the house in order.
I can get stuff delivered on days working from home too, I guess.

Pretty much the same idea lol

1:55 PM
yep!

I guess i could ask my parents
but my mom's already going "I have so many ideas!"
and I'm all nuuuuu

Same here.
My mom has all these ideas that'll turn the apartment in the same horrible mess to clean as this place.

I want a couch, maybe a tv/tvstand, a dinner table... not much more.

About the same. And a badass computer desk :D

2:00 PM
Yep, but I'll likely put that in the bedroom, not the living room area

I was actually hoping the bomb shelter would work

Single bed ... she keeps saying I'm not getting to take my current bed.
@JourneymanGeek Good idea, then you can play games to distract while you're stuck in there.

Its the end of the world as we know it, but I can frag? :D

Sounds good to me ;)

I don't actually really like the idea of computers in my bedroom
It keeps you from sleeping on time :D

2:03 PM
I'm good enough with that.

I've not always been :D
Traditionally we had a shared PC in the study
I moved mine to my room cause I was fed up with people kicking me off, and when I salvaged my own :D
the system wasn't too bad :D

We used to have a single one too, in the living room... I got my own in my bedroom when it became clear that I needed more than an hour of PC time each day.. sometimes for school, but most of the time it was just an hour of schoolwork and then there was no time left for play ;)

lol
the thing was my brother and I split the cost on the PC
and my dad kept kicking me off :D
(not a problem now. I have two PCs. and a NUC, and a spare NUC.. and... )

I have my own now too ;) And a laptop I still need to clean up so I can watch Netflix on it while in bed ;)

Rob
2:13 PM
I thought your home was almost spotless already, it's as clean as mine and I cleaned up yesterday ....

@FreezePhoenix Monica herself also confirmed the same

@Rob That's mom's home :P It takes too much effort to keep it that way, that was my point in saying I'd do things differently in my own apartment ;)

Theoretically, if they wanted to fake stuff, they could have destroyed her arbitration opt-out letter and claimed she never opted out, but they didn't do that.

Rob
✔️

2:27 PM
@Tinkeringbell @JourneymanGeek I had a Dyson battery-operated vacuum cleaner. It worked well during its first couple years, but over time, it began losing its suction power and its battery life. They're not future-proof.

Rob
Try a dirt hiding rug. My rug is off white and shows dirt easily, which prompts me to vacuum twice a week.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Nothing lasts for ever.
though, We did have a drier that lasted 2 decades ;)
with a few... ugly haxxxx

@Rob All the heating I'm getting will be through the floor, so I was thinking no rug... as that'll only hamper heating

Rob
The heat should warm the rug. I've had hot water heated floors before. Up to you, it's your bare feet on winter mornings. 🧦

We'll see. Maybe I do indeed get cold feet and buy one ;)

2:31 PM
@JourneymanGeek It is the reason we switched back to a traditional bagged vacuum cleaner. It does require consistent bag replacing, but bags are cheap and the overall thing lasts a longer time
@JourneymanGeek Don't want to spend $500 (US) for something that only lasts three years

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog there's cyclonic/wired vacuums. Lots of folks cloned the dyson system

@Tinkeringbell Just put an electric fan heater on the floor

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog well, I did say $$$$$ :D

@JourneymanGeek And none of these cloned systems lasted longer than five years

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Yeah, $$$$$

2:32 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I... fix things

Those are cheap, I paid less than $20 for mine

I meant the electricity bill

Rob
or a snuggie.

Those things never stick at just costing $20
@Rob Oh, I'm definitely either getting one of those or crocheting my own!

2:34 PM
I doubt I will need to worry about heating :D

You 240V people can get 3,000+ watt heaters, while we 120V-ers are stuck with max 1500 watts

I've never understood the american attachment to 120v :D
But I'm a firm fan of the british way of doing things when it comes to power :D

@JourneymanGeek It's less dangerous. The americans "take care" of their people.

@JourneymanGeek Your body has the same resistance which means it draws the same current when exposed to live wires, and keeping the voltage lower means you draw less overall power, so 120V is 50% safer (not 100%)

@πάνταῥεῖ We don't cheap out on plugs

2:37 PM
India cheaps out on plugs, though

the UK plugs are inherently cheaper than the garbage the americans use :D

Same for mainland Europe

Rob
@Tinkeringbell An authentic one is U$20 at their site: snuggiestore.com/collections/snuggie-tails/products/…

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog the indians actually use the old pre war standard.
We use a similar plug for high amperage uses

Who needs plugs? Just free wires drilled together! :D

2:39 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ slightly worse than american plugs
barely

Rob
Gotta love the electrical standards there:

lol.
I'm sure standards have nothing to do with that ;)

Rob
DIY, free electricity.

Depends on the level of "standard" ;)

Not DIN for sure ...

2:45 PM
If something hits the pole... there's a bit of a Din yes ;)
its not that bad in most places, though I saw a transformer spontaniously explode once

Rob
Theft of electricity is the criminal practice of stealing electrical power. It is a crime and is punishable by fines and/or incarceration. It belongs to the non-technical losses. According to the annual Emerging Markets Smart Grid: Outlook 2015 study by the Northeast Group, LLC, the world loses US$89.3 billion annually to electricity theft. The highest losses were in India ($16.2 billion), followed by Brazil ($10.5 billion) and Russia ($5.1 billion).President of Northeast Group Ben Gardner stated : "India loses more money to theft than any other country in the world. The state of Maharashtra—which...

2:58 PM

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog so wierdly shouty 0_0

@JourneymanGeek Consider this: until the 1990s, many UK manufacturers would exploit a loophole in the law by simply not installing plug sockets on appliances, and instead just having a bare wire where it's supposed to be plugged in; the end user would be expected to separately purchase a plug socket adapter and wire it up themselves.
This was done for cost-saving; in the 1990s, though, this loophole was closed.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog And UNLIKE OTHER PLUGS, UK plugs are designed to do it safely

Turns out people were inserting things into the ground pin to open the shutters and sticking the bare wires inside the outlet, negating the safety benefits

Most other plugs don't have safety shutters :D

3:13 PM
The fuse in the UK plug came about from a necessity, though: a copper shortage meant that there couldn't be separate circuits for different things in the house, everything had to be installed in a continuous ring to save copper, but this had the side effect of not allowing separate breakers. So they moved the fuses from the breaker panel to the plugs themselves, because otherwise a short would affect the whole house rather than just the one circuit.
Today, though, most modern UK homes do have separate circuits, so it provides a double safety benefit.

Just better :D

4:10 PM
Here we just have one breaker per circuit, and one circuit for every plug across the whole flat.

@JourneymanGeek Meh, for me, a desktop computer is fine, as you have to get up out of bed to use it. You can't carry it into your bed like a laptop.

4:23 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog my desktop is in my room
Context 😁

Guys, what is the Happy Hour? I can't understand

One does not understand happy hour. One merely survives it.

@JourneymanGeek Shhhh

@VerNicksaysReinstateMonica This here is a Tavern. It's modern equivalent often has a Happy Hour, where the booze is cheap and the people even cheaper ;)

It's not like in the olden days when you had to sail across the ocean to get some decent workforce

4:27 PM
@Tinkeringbell Oh. Haven't heard about it in real life.
Yeah, I'm a bit behind life
Do you do something during this hour?

Better not, unless just watching

Drink too much, get too drunk... behave like it?

But no tavernfights still, please
