@SébastienRenauld not just implict rules, but threats of punitive action have a disproportionate response if that makes any sense

Also a valid case

@Gwideon Hi!

@Gwideon Hi.
Sorry to see you felt it necessary to take a drastic step with your question. Hope your inbox is calmer now.

it is

@Gwideon hi :)

:waves @Gwideon:

how is everyone

user310756
@KevinB I owe you a massive thanks. I'm using the ad blocker for all notifications and awards and I'm so much happier. It's make a gazillion percent difference

user310756
@Gwideon good hun, how are you? Recharged at all?

@YvetteColomb I've recharged a bit. i'm doing alright

user310756
3:13 PM
@Shog9 me too! but in a small bottle that you drink out of. Don't know what they're called

@Gwideon Still here, for some strange reason... I guess we must really like helping people.

user310756
@Gwideon good. I'm on discord if you ever need to reach out.

I will

Yvette's given up trying to have a break, and is now officially back on the site. :)

user310756
@PM2Ring hehe. I had to do that. It was being used as a weapon against me. So it was making a point. - refering to my meta post

okay

@YvetteColomb I see your MSO post had a mixed reception. Oh well. At least some of us are glad to have you back.

3:29 PM
i've made a couple comments on my post but um I think I won't be doing much beyond that

@Zoethetransgirl yikes

@Zoethetransgirl I don't see what you're linking to. What happened just curious

yup
@Gwideon R/A stuff.

oh okay

@Gwideon looks okay to me. Those are friendly comments.

3:35 PM
so basically the usual

If you don't have the rep to see a deleted post, clicking on a link to a deleted answer just shows you the question, I think.

@Raedwald yes

@Gwideon bit more caustic then usual but eh
deleted anyways

good
it's just that kind of stuff has been really common recently

I'm wondering if the minimum rep level on MSE shouldn't be up to 2 to at least block those fresh accounts from posting.

3:38 PM
of course my perspective may be a little skewed

@rene protecting the question doesn't work?

@rene journey asked about that
I concur

or is the bar then too high?

protecting the question doesn't stop people from making new ones

3:39 PM
@OrangeDog I dunno
@OrangeDog protecting needs 10 rep to be able to post
@Magisch on MSE or private?

I saw that post. I was deeply saddened by the top answer :( for the reasons why they use a throw away account, that is

As you might guess, Raedwald is not my real name. Keeping my SO identity separate from my real identity seemed like a wise move.

oh yeah it definitely is wise. you can probably guess my name isn't Gwideon

I know you might not be able to say, but has there been any consensus on this post: meta.stackexchange.com/q/335745/388335

probably not

consensus is probably irrelevant, staff are dictating the rules

It seemed like trolling, but it's still around. If it was legitimate, I'd want to, at least, withdraw my flags and apologize

3:53 PM
@divibisan I'm assuming you mean to link to the post that is duped to?

@Rubiksmoose No, the post that was closed as a duplicate.

I'm curious - what happens if the last MSE moderator takes a break too? (one of the remaining two is apparently on a break)

@Zoethetransgirl then Tim Post has to open even more tabs

@Zoethetransgirl Not a lot more then currently, I guess

also this is just a note because it's something i'm seeing all around. can we avoid the word preferred when referring to pronouns as it makes it seem like someone's pronouns are up for debate. um sorry

user310756
3:55 PM
@Zoethetransgirl which one is on a break?

No idea

@Zoethetransgirl then we're back to 6 months ago or so? It worked, it just took a bit longer for flags to be handled.

6 months ago MSE had maybe 10% the activity of now though

user310756
@PM2Ring thank you. Honestly, the lack of popularity is to be expected. I'm voicing unpopular views atm.

we used to gripe about 3-4 off topic questions per day
we still get these but now we also get all of ... this

3:56 PM
@divibisan I'm not psychic, so I can't be certain that person's a troll, but objecting to the correct use of "you" looks pretty trollish to me. Either that, or the OP has a very poor grasp of grammar, but that's unlikely, considering that most of what they wrote is coherent, albeit not particularly logical.

@Gwideon why would personal preference be up for debate?

Sorry nevermind.

It's... not a "preference". It's about what's accurate.

@divibisan I mean, I guess I am confused then about who/what are you asking? There's no way to measure consensus around a question that is closed and that didn't even get an answer.

user194636
@YvetteColomb Tink

3:58 PM
@divibisan it has 2 delete votes, I would assume it is a legit question but we better handle all comments / answers / outcome on one cannonical dupe.

@user58 it seems to me more rude to ask "what are you" than to ask "what do you prefer"?

user310756
@user58 it can be helpful to not be too dismissive when people ask like that. It's a public room and all

@OrangeDog "what are your pronouns?"

user310756
@PaulWhite poor Chris cripes

user194636
@YvetteColomb he's also not moderating staff posts

4:00 PM
If you need / want a qualifier, you can say "specified pronouns" rather than "preferred pronouns".

@Rubiksmoose I guess I'd prefer he/him

@OrangeDog it's... hard to explain but um some people think they can convince us that our pronouns aren't actually are pronouns. sorry

user310756
@PaulWhite what do you mean? he's on partial strike?

I don't think this has been stated publicly.

@OrangeDog Oh, I mean, thanks for telling me, but I mean more that I was suggesting "what are your pronouns" versus "what are you" (which does seem at least brusque if not rude/confusing)

4:01 PM
@PM2Ring yeah specified pronouns would be better

user194636
@YvetteColomb you'd have to ask him. my impression is it is more of a recusal.

user310756
I don't see him now

user310756
I could ask one of the mods I'm in touch with privately

user310756
I was on fb with Chris, but left it

user310756
Yeh I have 100? comments under one post. I have the same on other posts

4:02 PM
@Rubiksmoose that still seems a bit rude to me, demanding to know my identity rather than asking after my preferences

sorry for asking um

user310756
stopping the notifications has helped - with an ad blocker

@Rubiksmoose I was just wondering whether the fact that it wasn't deleted as a troll post (as many of the comments suggested) represented an actual decision by mods etc. that it was a legitimate post, or just a lack of consensus or a decision that closure as a dupe was fine. That there's no answer is a fine answer to me

user310756
@Gwideon ?

user310756
it sounds like there's not enough mods around to make that decision. So I wouldn't be analysing it

4:04 PM
wait meta only has one active mod right now

@divibisan Ah I see.

I still have 5 outstanding "unfriendly or unkind" flags; the oldest is 2 days old. I guess only "rude/abusive" gets attention at the moment.

yeah
geez only 2

@OrangeDog You'd have to ask a trans/NB person, but generally I think they've found it to be an acceptable way to ask.

4:05 PM
@Raedwald Rude/abusive get handled automatically.

no wonder it's taking so long to take care of some stuff

@Gwideon plus the CMs

and some devs. I saw Taryn delete a post earlier

@Rubiksmoose but if we're asking everyone...

true

4:06 PM
@PM2Ring Automatically if contains a bad word, or has multiple flags, correct? Otherwise needs a moderator?

@Raedwald I'm not sure of the exact algorithm. IIRC, 6 R/A flags kill anything, less are needed if the post contains certain keywords... Or maybe I'm getting mixed up with spam flags.

@PM2Ring I think regex matching only applies to comments

The precise rules might be kept deliberately hidden.

@Raedwald that would be very sensible

Yeah. We don't want people working around the rules.

4:09 PM
@OrangeDog English language usage itself has been up for debate for a very long time, so you're guaranteed to see that.

user310756
@Raedwald they count as the same thing. So if enough people flag with either it will auto delete - other wise it requires mod deletion

People might debate pronouns as part of English usage itself.

@DavidA yeah, I got there

user310756
can we just not get into a discussion about the correct use of pronouns. It's been done to death on meta and only led to grief

Can we stop rehashing this topic. We have been looking at it from every angle, for the upteenth time

In 21st century America lots of people think vanilla is a really weird flavor

user310756
hm I love real vanilla flavouring

user310756
especially in custarf

user310756
and custard too

@M.A.R. yep

4:27 PM
Well, I don't ever get much of the real vanilla taste. Just once or twice it was done right, I preferred it to all the cheap fruit flavors.

it's all beaver juice these days

Ar one stage, vanilla was endangered, due to war in Mexico.

@PM2Ring even though it's native to Madagascar?

And BTW, if you're considering which one sucks less for your health, if you had to choose between chocolaty chocolaty greasy chocolate and fruit, the worst chocolate flavor is healthier.
Or less un-dis-imhealthy

In my youth, I'm note sure how much stuff that was labelled "vanilla" actually contained real vanilla. Real vanilla is quite expensive.

user310756
4:29 PM
it is!

@M.A.R. unless you're a dog

@Raedwald Chemists are great at faking things.

Now days, you can see the specks in stuff that has real vanilla.

@OrangeDog Well, in case of dogs, the fruit flavor turns them into a zombie.
And they appear in cheap games. No fate is worse.

user310756
is that a real orange dog or an orange flavouring dog?

4:31 PM
It's a . . . OMG their head is . . . it's a horror movie dog

real Orange, but not the fruit

The programming language?

user310756
hm

@OrangeDog No, it's native to Mesoamerica. I can't remember where I read that stuff about it being endangered by war, but IIRC it was during the late 1800s.

Because there are 200000 words in English corpora and all of them have become a programming language name by now

4:33 PM
@PM2Ring TIL

Even "programming"
@OrangeDog Everything delicious belongs more or less there

I'd expected overseas production to be sufficiently established by then

Also, dangit, @rene, I was in the middle of a borderline-messages-with-no-trashable-messages spree.
Lesson to be learned: Scroll up.
Meh

Indeed

The Shakespeare Programming Language (SPL) is an esoteric programming language designed by Jon Åslund and Karl Hasselström. Like the Chef programming language, it is designed to make programs appear to be something other than programs; in this case, Shakespearean plays. A character list in the beginning of the program declares a number of stacks, naturally with names like "Romeo" and "Juliet". These characters enter into dialogue with each other in which they manipulate each other's topmost values, push and pop each other, and do I/O. The characters can also ask each other questions which behave...
Indubitably

@OrangeDog Maybe it was early 1800s. Sorry, I can't find a ref. I guess I might have mixed it up with another spice... but I don't think so.
@OrangeDog Interesting! The closest I've come to doing stuff like that is doing binary arithmetic in Game of Life, using streams of gliders for bit strings.

@PM2Ring that would correspond to the Mexican War of Independence

@OrangeDog That sounds right.

@PM2Ring that's the Special:Random link, so I don't know which one you're talking about

@OrangeDog Oh. The page I got was about OGEL, a grid based language.

@user58 gone

I wonder how many people know that after X amount of flags a comment is automatically deleted (versus actively deleted by one CM or mod) - considering all the new to meta people I see

5:14 PM
not that many
i've even seen people accuse the CMs of censoring this room

oh, I've seen that all the time ever since welcoming because people don't always understand what a room owner is (especially when compared to mod; CM; power user)

@Magisch There aren't many who are that blatant, but enough to make it painful, especially if they survive long enough to gather upvotes. Of course they have to get nuked, but it means when people ask for evidence of blatant nastiness, we can't show them. And I guess some wouldn't even acknowledge that it's nasty. :(
A lot of people posting on MSE don't seem to realise there's only one active MSE mod, and most of the manual flag handling is currently being done by CMs / staff.

@Magisch "how am I supposed to operate in a world where I'm not inherently superior to everyone else?!"

some (IRL) asked me why I'm still following this & I said "because I want to get back to WB and I just can't/won't until I see something change" (which may mean I never do but we'll see)

@PM2Ring I was given a very narrow view into the insanity by a 10K+ user... and holy moly

There was an answer by Mari-LouA on this question defending the efforts by by Tim Post and others to keep meta clean. I was a bit harsh in tone at first, but got edited to be much better just before being deleted. It might be worth considering undeletion.

@divibisan I beg to differ. It is deleted by Shog and was red flagged, he did judge the latest revsion. I don't see a reason to flag for undeletion, specially because Shog left a comment for the OP.

hey @divibisan

@rene If that's the case, then never mind. I have only a very partial view of the situation, so thanks for filling me in on the context.
@Gwideon hi!

5:57 PM
how are you
also sorry that i came off as pretty negative in my comments

@Mgetz better :P

@Gwideon Oh, don't worry! I go back and forth too

@Gwideon Because LGBTQ+ stuff clashes so strongly with their beliefs of what people should be like. So they feel they are being righteous in defending the orthodoxy.

@divibisan yeah I wish i could be more positive when it comes to this but having an anxiety attack over what someone was posting yesterday has probably colored my view

It's bad enough seeing this stuff online. It gains a whole extra dimension when you witness it in meat space. OTOH, such encounters IRL are often short, you don't get the time for the protracted debates that can occur online. Unless you're forced to live with it...

6:07 PM
which unfortunately I am

Ah. I thought you only revealed your non-binary nature online. But of course you might be living in a situation where people are openly hostile to LGBTQ+ stuff & you just have to keep your mouth shut.

@Gwideon Oh, that 100% makes sense. I don't have the courage to jump into the middle of a fight like that

yeah i do. um it's why I have to hide this stuff. I'm just waiting for the moment I can move out.

What can we do about a user pretending to prefer a reasonable neopronoun, but out of bad faith ?

flag, as usual
let a mod decide.

6:14 PM
Assume good faith. Treat them seriously.

@user58 They explicitly stated it was a protest. I'm not sure about the flag reason. R/A seem far fetched, but I guess I'll go by that

"other" and explain.

@ArthurHavlicek Custom.

@user58 Done

6:30 PM
Can someone with edit privileges fix "mem" to "meme" here?

gotta love not having the rep to do crap

Pro tip for earning MSE rep: Make simple feature requests for improving documentation and explanation of tools. Plus accessibility. Lots of rep in no time, plus maybe actually improve stuff ;)
(the above is slightly tongue-in-cheek)

or, you know, answer [featured] stuff

just answer all the stuff

6:41 PM
You're a terrible tonguer in cheek . . . tongue in cheeker . . . cheek tonguer @user58
Here's tongue-in-cheek: Rep is in adding the nth criticism to the system, whether it adds something to the whole discussion, or actually takes away from it.

rep works in your favor generally. You get more rep per upvote than downvote, so you'll naturally gain rep just from answering, regardless of whether or not the majority of the posts are received positively.
unless of course you attract thousands of downvotes

@KevinB Genau, but unrelated.
If you won't be participating in the system, rep gain and loss shouldn't matter. If you will, it has a tendency to just go up, not down, for most people that meaningfully participate. The rush of blood onto the face when you notice your rep goes down by four is incidental and completely irrational in bigger timescales.
This compartmentalization of feelings obviously doesn't happen to most people, and everyone gets the blood rush if they do notice and keep track of their rep.
I need to find another long word to use, and no Icelandic or Welsh names please.

@Zoethetransgirl That assumes a lot more courage than I actually have

I just post and hope for the best. I get scared whenever the notification inbox lights up after posting :x

okay are these questions that are obviously posted on the wrong stack exchange trolling

@Gwideon Nah, usually not
Unless you see evidence to the contrary.

it seems to be happening alot today though

@Gwideon Mostly just newbies unfamiliar with the site who don't bother reading Help pages.

People have generally just forgotten how confusing the experience can be if you're not fluent in the site's language.
And entirely different theme and colors fade away.

true
@BelovedFool Hey ^^

6:57 PM
@Gwideon Hello :)

how are you doing

But I guess they're . . . we're labelled things if we don't know the most intricate detail about the western culture. I get and adhere to the English-only policy because it's an argument with solid foundations in my opinion, but this is really pushing it.
Hi x 2

@Gwideon Good, I guess? I'm sick IRL (which as nothing to do with MSE), so everything is a bit hard. How are you?

@user58 we make a deal. I provide the weird emoticons, and you provide math signs and all
BTW, § works on the main site

@Zoethetransgirl I just don't post, my experience on meta has been less than stellar

6:59 PM
@BelovedFool I'm okay a bit stressed out. sorry that you're sick

@Mgetz :/

and you're surprised how?

also sorry if my answer was kinda antagonistic

@Zoethetransgirl Thanks!

There is a reason I said removing rep from meta was probably a good thing.

7:01 PM
@Mgetz Right? :-/

@Gwideon No I wasn't talking about yours
@Rubiksmoose Hey, why do you have a nose. I don't have a nose

oh um I was talking to belovedfool

@M.A.R. I got your nose!

@Gwideon This is awkward
I will vanish into the horizon.

no don't

7:02 PM
@Gwideon Being stressed out is very understandable lately. I upvoted your answer, so I guess it's fine by me :p

@Gwideon Don't forget you can click on the arrow to respond to a message from someone.

@Rubiksmoose oh yeah sorry

@Mgetz Well, the only argument is some form of a "because". I don't think many (including the CMs, but can't speak for them) agree with the rep system thing, and people acknowledge its down sides, but no one's there to remove the rep system here, for obviousish reasons

@M.A.R. and yet meta didn't originally have rep impact until the split
and I think we should go back to that

@Gwideon I mean, you don't have to. It is just something a lot of users forget. And it can help when people are talking over each other :)

7:05 PM
@BelovedFool FWIW, I hope you don't take the downvotes as disagreeing with the fundamentals of your stance. I personally downvoted since calling problematic comments being removed in a span of hours without any Charcoal-like help is a tad bit unrealistic.
@Mgetz Because it was an SO thing, I guess.

@M.A.R. I didn't for those ones, don't worry

That part of the split is good, people from other sites felt really awkward in Pangea

@Mgetz If you want to share your opinion (and you feel it hasn't already been covered), I'd say go for it. If you need backup to deal with people, ping me and I'll help if I'm awake. And if stuff goes too far, you can always flag-pls here

@M.A.R. not disagreeing with that, just I think the rep on meta shouldn't be affected by votes but should reflect the highest rep on the network

Pretty good idea

7:07 PM
@Zoethetransgirl I always feel it's been covered

@Sonic is/was really vocal about this, you should talk to them

except that it would give power to people who participate on SO moreso than anyone else
which is the same problem that existed prior to the split

@KevinB no? network wide, not SO specific

Yeah that's my point, wait, no, hmm, you make a good point

@KevinB No, the old MSO had its own separate rep

7:08 PM
Right, but SO being the active site, it's faaaar easier to get rep there. There's far more people there with higher rep

@Mgetz He means gaining rep by the thousands is much more difficult elsewhere.
@KevinB Jinx.

Q: What if MSE used a different rep model for privileges?

canonSay you're a 50k rep user on SO who, while active on MSO, only visits MSE when discussions or feature requests affect SO itself. If all you ever do is comment and vote on MSE, you can easily run yourself out of rep... thereby losing your voting voice in matters that affect your site. How would M...

It may have had separate rep (i don't recall, but i'll take your word for it) but the fact remains, it was mostly used by SO users. they had an advantage.

Using a network-wide sum method or a maximum rep method would still unfairly bias SO, according to that post.

Ohai @Sonica Britanicca

7:10 PM
I would prefer simply relaxing some of the rep thresholds for meta, particularly voting.

@KevinB The site today called MSE was called MSO back in the day. The site currently called MSO was a whole new per-site meta established when the split happened.

Or deleting

@KevinB Downvoting on MSE requires 100 rep, instead of the usual 125

Yes, which you lose the first vote you cast
err, second

Not if it's on a question

7:11 PM
Meh, open to abuse.
I think we should conclude this discussion with giving me deleting privs.
So that I can use them to delete the 0.00004% of the posts.
But more importantly, open the realm of rants

7:33 PM
Mmmmh... Not that I want to see them, but... Where did the ads go? I'm not getting any ads, be it in regular browsing, incognito browsing, even on a different browser. Is it the case for anyone else?
Hi all, by the way :)

@Jenayah haha they're on to you

Note: I'm on phone, can't test on a computer tonight. Or rather, could, but I don't have the hour necessary for it to boot up

@Jenayah Hi you, by the way

ads are definitely still there

@M.A.R. that's the thing, still no ads even looked out and resetting cookies, cache, whatever

7:34 PM
@Jenayah Oh, I was just looking into ads on Meta earlier and noticed your chronicle "Today's inappropriate ad" lol
I thought it was some meme until I noticed it was all the same author

Did ads determine I'm a bank of iPhones in a sweatshop in China or something?
To the people confused why ads need to run their own Javascript (even ones that are just static images): The short answer is that Ad Networks do not and cannot trust website operators. They need to run their own JavaScript served from their own servers in order to verify that a real user saw the ad and for how long, and they can't trust the website operator to tell them. And these pieces of JavaScript tend to be more invasive and privacy-destroying than the website's JS because they care, far more than the actual website does, that the "user" is not a bank of iphones in a sweatshop in China. — Clueless Jun 27 at 8:48

they're on to you, sweatshop iphones

Mmmmh
@Emilie ahah, yeah I guess it is becoming a chronicle

Oh shut I messed up
Disregard that message

It's burned onto my retinas.
I don't think it's a coincidence that I came here at this very moment to make a joke and your message showed up.
The universe is trying to tell us something, redacted email username.

> Hi {email redacted},

Unfortunately we do not process bug reports through this channel, and there's no reason not to report this on Meta. You can blur or anonymize the screenshots if you think it's necessary, since providing a direct link to an example is not required to diagnose that our tool does not {redacted}.

Dang 57 people saw that :o
Well the emailers said it was ok. I want to report it, but it is just too easy to reproduce.
My reply:

57 of the baddest people in the land of Ooo

> I reported this this way because it could very easily be abused to get the identities of disassociated users, against Creative Commons licensing rules. I don’t feel it’s appropriate to post this on Meta when it is so reproducible.

And they replied "wanna grab a sandwich"
LMAO

wut

We interrupt thus dumpster fire to bring a smile to your face.
