ABORT MISSION, ABORT MISSION

and it's not on HN yet ;)

@AndrasDeak It was on the front page.

@ArtOfCode oh wow. 39k visits? Or people who signed?

oh, it's #33, yeah
just after the fold
@Shadow visits

@Shadow 39k visits in an hour.

2:00 PM
@AndrasDeak oh

295/74 signees respectively

185k total visits

@ArtOfCode well probably it got posted all over the internet by now

@Shadow it's on HN front page

@ArtOfCode Uniques?

2:01 PM
Who pays for the hosting?

@ArtOfCode so is the apology

@ArtOfCode that's why I was worried about the caching ;-)

There was a scathing critique of your letter in an answer over there

I'd give few bucks via PayPal if needed.

@ArtOfCode I'm sure the kerning has something to do with it ;) :P

2:02 PM
@Emilie About 50k

@ArtOfCode can your hosting keep up with that?

@Shadow me, but I was paying for it anyway - it's just on my EC2 server

@Magisch They usually just charge more if you exceed the bandwidth. No?

@Magisch it's still standing, so... yup

@ArtOfCode lmk when it becomes burdensome

2:02 PM
That's a lot more traffic, though?

@Shadow no, reserved instance. There are network bandwidth fees, but they're tiny fractions of pennies

@ArtOfCode well if they charge you for this, drop a word.

@ArtOfCode While the question on meta has 3k views

@ArtOfCode Can you add a former moderator badge to Monica's signature?

Cloudflare should have taken the vast majority of traffic for this

2:04 PM
@MadScientist lol if only. They took about 20%.
@Stevoisiak yup

What's a former moderator badge?

Heh, I've been charged precisely £0.00 for network usage
@Shadow unfilled diamond

@Shadow It's on the 'Dear Stack Exchange' letter

it's the pinned version of mod diamonds, so to speak

The origin server isn't actually taking that many requests, though, @MadScientist - putting that nginx caching in front of it has taken a heck of a lot of traffic out of the equation. Good call on pointing that out :)

2:11 PM
Randomizing the user-signature order was a nice touch

@Stevoisiak that one's down to @Emilie :)

Should the latest announcement have a community tag?

Welcome @Emilie, the newest addition to the RO team! Please don't lose your mop.

Oh hey, don't erase history. ;)
@Stevoisiak meh... previous announcement didn't have it either.

Trying to put together a search query to include any relevant posts on this event

@user58 Thank you! :)

already mad with power, I see

@AndrasDeak it's a requirement for appointment

2:24 PM
@AndrasDeak x) nyaknyaknyak

@ArtOfCode Idea: maybe just expand the list of all signatories by default. It's kind of obnoxious to re-open every time, showing visually how big the list is adds some weight to it, and there is nothing "below the fold" that couldn't be just as happy either below a long list or above it.

@user58 Viscera Cleanup Detail: Meta edition?

@Mgetz Buckets! We need more buckets!

@Caleb The problem with doing that is it pushes the signature form way down, which isn't ideal. It's definitely impactful to see the full list, but that's why it's behind an expand button as a compromise.

@Stevoisiak you forgot two dots meta.stackexchange.com/….. oh wait chat strips them away :/

2:26 PM
@Bart never enough buckets

Oh, it looks like chat strips the two dots from the url

@ArtOfCode can the signature form be put above the list of signatories?

Welp

lol yes

@JohnDvorak also makes it less impactful

2:27 PM
This should work meta.stackexchange.com/…

As a bare link, yeah, they don't get linked. If you place them inside a []() thing, it'll be linked properly.

Side by side? The list of signatories would appear longer that way!

@Stevoisiak yup

@JohnDvorak doesn't work on mobile :P
We did spend a long time going through the design of this thing. It's not going to be perfect, of course, but most things are how they are for a reason.

@ArtOfCode I sincerely doubt that anybody that's actually going to sign isn't going to scroll all the way down. But what do I know, I'm a 3 bit systems hack not a UI designer.

2:31 PM
Probably not, but I'd rather not open that up :)

@ArtOfCode something in the code isn't showing signatures after you sign until you do a force refresh. This could cause confusion.

@Caleb When I initially saw the signatures, I assumed it was moderators only until I saw the non-diamonded users

@Mgetz it has caused confusion... I've been watching the server logs, people fairly often try to sign it twice. It's nginx caching the response page that's doing it - it shouldn't be, because when someone new signs the page gets a new ETag, but it is.

lol

@ArtOfCode it's a completely server side page isn't it? otherwise I'd suggest using JS to add it.

2:34 PM
You mean jQuery. For sure.

@Mgetz Aye. There's some client side JS (expand button, dark theme), but the signature addition is done server side.

@ArtOfCode I would try to test... but I've already signed /shrug

I have a sock but we're not the FCC ;p
(SCC is something from work sigh)

@Caleb if it was the intention to allow all users, not just moderators, to be able to sign the letters, I suggest making it very explicit, as I'm sure many have thought it's just for moderators, and not them, and left it unsigned

@user1306322 it's literally the first bit of text on the website. And it's the last bold point in the meta post.

2:44 PM
can you quote it please?

The first part of the letter says "We, the undersigned moderators of the Stack Exchange network"

yes, it says "moderators", which to me meant that it's not for regular users to sign

@ArtOfCode Maybe everyone should be "Everyone (Users and Moderators)"

@user1306322 Please ping @ArtOfCode about that, he's the author not me. I was just chipping in my 2¢.

If you're not sure it's a bit vague

2:46 PM
"We, the undersigned users and moderators of the Stack Exchange network"
Or it might be better reversed

@Stevoisiak yes, I think it would be a nice touch to put users forth in this sentence

"We, the undersigned moderators and users of the Stack Exchange network"
Funilly enough, that's how the lavender letter opens

"we three kings of orient"
sorry. Had to.

The lavender letter mentions users, but the main letter does not.

@Stevoisiak Think that's because that letter was written by users and moderators, while the other was just mods

2:50 PM
also, I have to ask why the both versions don't cross-link to each other in a visible way, like at the bottom "Also, please read this other letter from this other group of users" kind of way

> If you're a moderator, your signature will have a diamond shown next to it automatically.
not to be a smart-ass but that kind of implies that not only mods or ex-mods can sign it

@AndrasDeak Right, that's listed below the button for signing

(I misread)

but that's not just it, I saw some other hints as well
@user1306322 I figured

I understood it as "currently holding moderator status and those moderators who resigned"

2:52 PM
@user1306322 I for one would not like to see that happen. The visibility for each of these is on meta and anywhere they are linked (which is a lot of places by a lot of different people for different reasons), I don't think cross-promoting different causes off-site would be a good idea.

Agreed with Caleb

okay, I'm not familiar with the context of that, so I'll leave it at that

> What follows is an open letter to Stack Exchange, Inc., from some of the remaining moderators there. While it was catalysed by recent events, it's not solely about them - it's more generally about the direction of stepping away from the community that Stack Exchange has appeared to be taking recently. This letter is signed by a number of moderators already, but you're welcome to sign in support - please see the bottom of the page.

(it wouldn't have been hard to prevent non-mods from signing it with the authentication)

I don't think that was the intention

3:00 PM
my point exactly

Personally, I find it impressive that such a polished site and letter was created in such a short timeframe

@Stevoisiak Hurray for Google Docs

was anybody else not involved in writing these letters also confused about whether they could sign it?

I figured out I could sign once I expanded the signatures
Before that, I thought somehow over 200 mods had signed

3:15 PM
@Stevoisiak We have talented wordsmiths among our mods... as for the website, I had quite a lot of the bits for it already, just needed some tweaking and some SE auth.

user351483
I don't think 200 mods are aware of what's been going on. Not that many are involved in Meta or the moderator shared spaces.

> Everyone: If you wish to sign this letter in support of the sentiments in it, you're welcome to do so - use the button at the bottom of the page. If you have your own further thoughts on the things we've touched on in this letter, feel free to use the answers here to add to the discussion.

3:56 PM
Haven't been to this room before...

@MisterPositive nevermind the madness, that's a feature not a bug

Welcome to Meta's Macchiato Mansion

do you have cookies?

Only if you join the dark side.
...of course, since it's the dark side, they'll be raisin oatbran cookies, but we don't publicize that.

@user58 Oh no....the worst cookie choice ever.....

3:58 PM
They freaking looked like chocolate chip! The disappointment!

@user58 you had me until raisins, currents would be fine but raisins... yuuuuck

@user58 the great pity is that I love an oatmeal cookie but hate raisins. :/

4:19 PM
@fbueckert awesome. I have the day off on the 13th so I can follow the live stream ...

4:32 PM
31 messages moved to Chimney

@rene snrk Yeah, that's not going to happen.
I'll keep you updated on what does happen, though.

Ok, thanks ;)

As far as I can see, I've got them nailed to the wall.
It'd take declaring bankruptcy for me to lose, and that seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Although they did say that whatever, "recourse" (their quotes) I did, I'd be wasting my time and money.

that would be my line of defense as well.

@rene That I'd be wasting my time?

4:46 PM
A quick question: When signing the "Dear Stack Exchange" letter, an account on SO was created. Does it somehow affect the signature when I delete that account again?

Shouldn't, no.
From what I've heard, at least.

@fbueckert yeah, if you back-off after that I wouldn't have to spend time and effort on it. I mean, it is cheap, but if it works for 50% of the customers they have an issue with ...

@user58 Thanks!

@rene Yeah, that's not going to fly. I'm also debating whether to go to the press with this info, to get the word out that the company is being disingenuous.

yeah, you could see if there is a local reporter interested in that story.
Or call CNN, they take whatever they can get

4:51 PM
There were a couple articles locally about the company when they first started doing this.
So emailing those news places might give good traction on a followup article.

Sounds good

5:11 PM
Well, in the midst of all the controversy, it appears we missed one important thing:
From what I can tell, the rewriting took place when the Markdown was being rendered, so earlier posts will still have rewritten links unless they are rebaked.

5:39 PM
I think we need to run a cleaning cycle on this coffee machine...

Hi new RO
This is awkward, because I dunno if we've met.
Oh hey look, catharsis. I signed the letter, it doesn't show my name yet. Blaming @user58.
Ya know, it's really hard to be snarky at you when you're anonymized.

@M.A.R. Blame caching

Not if I likened Gandalf to some strawberry pie or some other funny thing, it would've been much better a nickname.

8:01 PM
@M.A.R. You don't mean to say that @user58 is the epitome of caching, do you? :)

Of course I do. If it sounds bad.
If it's a compliment, no.

Ca-ching. *money drops out of slot*

@M.A.R. Absolutely right. It's extremely hard for you to be snarky at me.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Now that I think about it, "Sonic" isn't a particularly patronizing nickname
Maybe if someone's nick was "Sonic's fanfiction", that would've been something else entirely.

oh I've seen a few of those with the new movie on its way

8:05 PM
Oh don't remind me
Ugh.
Now you reminded me.
I keep reminding myself now.

Y'know, @M.A.R. reminds me of Sg. Shadwell.

@user58 Don't forget to switch sides every now and then!

> But he found he rather liked Shadwell. People often did, much to Shadwell's annoyance. The Rajits liked him because he always eventually paid his rent and didn't cause any trouble, and was racist in such a glowering, undirected way that it was quite inoffensive; it was simply that Shadwell hated everyone in the world, regardless of caste, color, or creed, and wasn't going to make any exceptions for anyone.
-Good Omens, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
...I may have re-read that book several times over the past few weeks and have been referencing it constantly. Don't judge me.

Looks around for cameras
@user58 AHAHHAHHA you read that book. YOU READ THAT BOOK!

I read that book
<3 both of those guys

8:11 PM
AHAHHAHHA
What a funny line. "I read that book"

Haven't gotten around to watching the Primate adaptation, but I heard it's good.

Seriously though, who's Emilie?
Username change?

No, just a user

Someone from better places and you're about to advise me to behave?

...who is now a RO

8:13 PM
Yeah right.

mod on the network

Yes, finally answering the question
Mod on . . . TWP?
Uh, I would have said Eeps but I've been there.

Graphic Design IIRC?

Code Review? RPG?
Oh that makes sense.

Hello :)

8:14 PM
My only interaction with Graphic Design was a mod presuming I was an arsehole
@Emilie Hi!

@M.A.R. Well that's unfortunate, sorry to hear that

@M.A.R. They weren't wrong. *flees*

58 remember that Charcoal drama with GD?

vaguely

I went to mediate and I maybe wanted to quench the fire with oil to drown it.

But the science is sound.

Q: New popup message when voting on a question?

Dharman Thanks for your vote! Your vote has been recorded and it affects this post's ranking. Since this post has reached the minimum score of 0 your vote will not be displayed. I just downvoted a question posted few days ago which was at 0 votes. After casting my vote I got a blue popup with the ab...

It was Ryan, maybe.

About as sound as sounding sound sound sounds. Not super sound, in other words, by the sound of it.

If that is happening, it's an A/B test
because if it wasn't, there wouldn't be any negative scored posts anymore, and there are some on the homepage rn
1
A: New popup message when voting on a question?

Shog9We are conducting a short duration experiment to understand how the voting user interface impacts question answering and editing. The effects of this experiment are superficial - reputation isn't altered. You will see the user interface revert back to normal behavior on October 21st.

seems to be an experiment

@AndrasDeak That was confusing. Conveniently had me shut up and stare at the screen for a few minutes.
Where was I.
Was I anywhere

let me remember that trick

8:20 PM
@M.A.R. Venus. Definitely.

Oh that explains the sweating
It's autumn and feels like midsummer
Fan theory suggests Venus folks didn't stop the global warming
God, definitely not a business resort.

They're indeed A/B testing removing downvotes
At least from view

wait, what?

From view could be nice. Make it visible to everyone else. And I'd go "haha n00b ur queston haz 20 downvotes"

@Magisch from view of the asker, probably

8:23 PM
@Magisch That explains why I'm in Venus

@Zoethetransgirl Post linked above. They're A/B testing not displaying negative scores.

oof, RIP -1.3k

That's not really terrible.

@Zoethetransgirl hmm?

woah, -1.4k now

8:24 PM
Someone in this room proposed this test a while back, but I can't find it now :|

Might not be bad actually
as long as the score still counts for post ban, reputation and ranking purposes

@Magisch right? I can't be annoyed at it.

@Zoethetransgirl ah... I thought it was something that mattered

8:24 PM
@Shog9 it only affects display, right? The effects of votes aren't canceled or anything?

If we can secure a marked improvement in comitment and sticking behavior on the part of askers and editors I'm all for it. The essential function of a downvote is not to let someone know their post sucks

@Shog9 I wouldn't be able to find them but wasn't this idea thrown around at least a dozen times in the jaded meta.SO posts?

@Zoethetransgirl we won't know until the test is over I think

uh, it's a static parameter though, isn't it?

@Zoethetransgirl right. Superficial - the goal is to gauge how score affects how folks interact with the post(s).

8:26 PM
It's a bit of an awkward time to run A/B tests, but I imagine the test was planned in advance

@Magisch it should at least convey some suckiness, before the question ban hits.

It'll be very interesting if not having negative scores makes people more likely to edit their closed posts into shape or similar

All I remember was Makoto was philosophical and elegant and I fit somewhere in my memory that this guy should be a vice president somewhere.

Changing rep effects is... A big deal. Hard to test that. Gotta make an educated guess and then... Live with it.

showing 0 as minimum sounds like a mistake for this reason

8:26 PM
@Shog9 That makes sense ^^

I'm going to avoid majorly sniping at this experiment until it's over. I can't fault wanting more information.

@AndrasDeak Thats what the several warnings pre-asking before it hits are for. There's already a system for that

@Stevoisiak well, delaying it would mean we'd go "where's the changes you promised".

If "oi, you'll be banned if you keep this on" doesn't deter you, neither will -5

@Magisch and even that doesn't work a lot of times.

8:27 PM
@user58 snipers are not major. Everyone knows that.

@Magisch and how will they understand what you're doing wrong? With a bunch of 0-vote questions?

@AndrasDeak Presumably these will also be closed

all I'm saying is to lower the fake minimum to -1

Considering I'm going out of my way to not describe how this works, waiting to snipe until the test is ended makes sense: why guess at what we're doing wrong when you could wait and criticize what we actually did wrong!
6

@Magisch I think we should isolate issues.

8:27 PM
I think we should wait out the experiment and wait for the write up

@M.A.R. At ease, private.

@Shog9 waiting two weeks for criticism? Naaaaah ;)

marshmallow test

they're obviously testing multiple things at once and if nothing else the data will be interesting

Twitter and YouTube have made me paranoid of A/B tests :P

8:28 PM
We can start moaning when/if actual policy proposals come of it

@Shog9 "delayed gratification". Sounds horrible! ....anybody seen my likes?

if you wait to criticize, you'll grow up to be wealthy and successful, as long as your parents are already wealthy and successful and feeding you plenty of marshmallows whenever your heart desires.

meh, that is too predictable.

@rene diabetes?

I'm of the opinion that overconsumption of marshmallows is counter indicated with life success

8:29 PM
There's so much positive and negative behavior going around in the site that you can refer to that probably any fundamental change can be responded to as "but what about these cases? It won't fix them" or "people just don't care" or anything else. So we'd need to be ready to ask ourselves if we really do want changes.

As anyone at Puzzling.SE will tell you, I prefer pretzels.

@AndrasDeak I dunno

Hey hey hey, as a former marshmallow, I am offended.
Sooo . . . @Shog, was there gonna be an announcement that this post happened to precede?

they never announce A/B tests up front

> Hey folks! We're testing something. But we're not gonna tell you what. Watch for the same cat to walk past twice

8:32 PM
@user58 snipers don't eat pretzels.

If they're doing an A/B test with secret parameters to get untainted data why would they purposefully taint the data by telling people

Heraclit said the same cat never walks by twice.

Meh, just asking

Perhaps the test is about data tainting. Oh no, I'm recursing

At this point I'm predicting the next unnecessary drama than doing anything useful with my brain

8:33 PM
recursion is a lie

@AndrasDeak I will say it again: You have the right mindset.

Recursing violates be-nice.

I've said that before. Maybe.

@M.A.R. it must be the test!

I have been lied to. One of my teachers was adamant I'd regularly need recursion

8:34 PM
dratsab

i've been commercially coding for 4 years and have used it twice for work, both times would have been done better by sequence instead

Huh, that sounds way worse.
@AndrasDeak Oh. My. God.

@Magisch the one thing teachers often don't do is debug real code :D
(at least I imagine; I had only the one programming teacher and he probably did)

Those that can, do. Those that can't,

I reckon my coworkers would come at me with a shovel if they had to debug recursing code of mine

8:37 PM

it never makes stuff easier to read imo
all these example functions like factorize and all that are not thing an ordinary programmer like me ever needs to re-implement

Some people find it easy to read and write recursive code. I've never been one of them.

@Magisch Shovels are terrible tools.
Except for beating dead horses.

A: An apology to our community, and next steps

Journeyman GeekA lot of folks have answered, and I apologise if I covered the same ground. I saw this this morning, right after I woke up, and well, after having a lot to say, I had no idea what to. Its a start. There's so much work to be done. This has always been about doing right by one of our own. Moni...

@Journey lest Lets was Let's, stop messing with my mind.
Does he bury the apostrophes or something.
. . . Oof, you could get a drama overdose even on the recent positively received apology's answers.
YMMV, but one of my ironically rigid and inflexible personal rules is extremism about any sort of broad or specific viewpoint only harms its delivery. There's some appeal to moderation fallacy somewhere hidden in it I admit, but it seems to be much safer than what life maxims people adhere to these days.

Soon the star board will be full of pins

@Bart Oh finally, someone that understand my frustration

it's already full of pins for me

I close voted this Evan post as off-topic but it doesn't make much sense to send that to or ask that at the per-site meta. My edit didn't prevent that it passed the re-open queue in the way I hoped. Anyone here with thoughts? Or maybe a better edit?

What are you looking for there @rene? You want to see it reopened or not?

9:10 PM
Yeah, I think it should be open

Okay, voted. But it's somewhat pointless. A moderator on the site is clearly aware. Knows that a CM is needed (which they could definitely contact) but they don't think it has much of a chance. Looks like we can't expect much more here. But fair enough to be open.

I trust Evan on this one ... — rene 5 hours ago

risky how?
