The origin server isn't actually taking that many requests, though, @MadScientist - putting that nginx caching in front of it has taken a heck of a lot of traffic out of the equation. Good call on pointing that out :)
@ArtOfCode Idea: maybe just expand the list of all signatories by default. It's kind of obnoxious to re-open every time, showing visually how big the list is adds some weight to it, and there is nothing "below the fold" that couldn't be just as happy either below a long list or above it.
@Caleb The problem with doing that is it pushes the signature form way down, which isn't ideal. It's definitely impactful to see the full list, but that's why it's behind an expand button as a compromise.
We did spend a long time going through the design of this thing. It's not going to be perfect, of course, but most things are how they are for a reason.
@ArtOfCode I sincerely doubt that anybody that's actually going to sign isn't going to scroll all the way down. But what do I know, I'm a 3 bit systems hack not a UI designer.
@Mgetz it has caused confusion... I've been watching the server logs, people fairly often try to sign it twice. It's nginx caching the response page that's doing it - it shouldn't be, because when someone new signs the page gets a new ETag, but it is.
@Caleb if it was the intention to allow all users, not just moderators, to be able to sign the letters, I suggest making it very explicit, as I'm sure many have thought it's just for moderators, and not them, and left it unsigned
also, I have to ask why the both versions don't cross-link to each other in a visible way, like at the bottom "Also, please read this other letter from this other group of users" kind of way
@user1306322 I for one would not like to see that happen. The visibility for each of these is on meta and anywhere they are linked (which is a lot of places by a lot of different people for different reasons), I don't think cross-promoting different causes off-site would be a good idea.

I don't think 200 mods are aware of what's been going on. Not that many are involved in Meta or the moderator shared spaces.

From what I can tell, the rewriting took place when the Markdown was being rendered, so earlier posts will still have rewritten links unless they are rebaked.

We are conducting a short duration experiment to understand how the voting user interface impacts question answering and editing. The effects of this experiment are superficial - reputation isn't altered. You will see the user interface revert back to normal behavior on October 21st.
If we can secure a marked improvement in comitment and sticking behavior on the part of askers and editors I'm all for it. The essential function of a downvote is not to let someone know their post sucks
Considering I'm going out of my way to not describe how this works, waiting to snipe until the test is ended makes sense: why guess at what we're doing wrong when you could wait and criticize what we actually did wrong!
if you wait to criticize, you'll grow up to be wealthy and successful, as long as your parents are already wealthy and successful and feeding you plenty of marshmallows whenever your heart desires.
There's so much positive and negative behavior going around in the site that you can refer to that probably any fundamental change can be responded to as "but what about these cases? It won't fix them" or "people just don't care" or anything else. So we'd need to be ready to ask ourselves if we really do want changes.

YMMV, but one of my ironically rigid and inflexible personal rules is extremism about any sort of broad or specific viewpoint only harms its delivery. There's some appeal to moderation fallacy somewhere hidden in it I admit, but it seems to be much safer than what life maxims people adhere to these days.

Okay, voted. But it's somewhat pointless. A moderator on the site is clearly aware. Knows that a CM is needed (which they could definitely contact) but they don't think it has much of a chance. Looks like we can't expect much more here. But fair enough to be open.
