online discussions (Stack Overflow, Reddit, HackerNews)

code samples from tutorials and forums

@Feeds that looks like a good resource...

forum discussions (StackOverflow, Reddit, HackerNews) rip meta for another week

moreover, StackOverflow (without space)

@Magisch Time for something mindfull ;) Ohmmmmm..... :)

well, I guess I'll assume good faith since the author is not an SE employee...?

2:05 PM
Yeah, seems like it :)

I wonder though, is this SEO / Native advertising?

But still, considering the blog is more for facing the public (and not the metas), I wonder if the editorial from SE realized, or... I dunno...

@Magisch I was thinking it might a blog post to link people to when they ask about how to search or something?

I can ignore "forum discussions" for a while, but the brand name of Stack Overflow (with space)...

@MetaAndrewT. I think it's about the site though... ;)

2:37 PM
Don't know what y'all are talking about...

@MetaAndrewT. I guess I'm still dreaming...

2:52 PM
Ah, @JourneymanGeek glad you're here! You missed a closing parenthesis in your latest answer, it seems ;)
> (quite honestly - finding its own clear niche within what's turned from a community-site blog to a broader corporate blog would be nice. While its true that some parts of MSO are scary and some folks a little challenging to deal with - well, its what SE did for ages anyway, and probably would have encouraged some folks less to have taken an angle that played up how they did things in the good old days.
Don't know where you were planning to close that? :P

._.
I just quickly knocked that out before bedtime
I'm working tommorrow (emergency cover) and my parents are miffed cause they apparently needed my help for something

Oof.
I'm going to pack, catch the train... and if it's not fixed, I'll do it ;)

fixed
lol

6-8 weeks later...
grr... ninjo'd

@MetaAndrewT. I do hope there's a train before that!

2:55 PM
and snap
I need to listen to Last Ride of the Day at some point ;p
@MetaAndrewT. eh. I still remembered what I wanted to do. Unless that was bothering people who hated dangling parentheses

compile error ;p

3:21 PM
@MetaAndrewT. Exactly!

1 hour later…
4:36 PM
rip

Panic!

Server outage on Meta?

I have a runtime error on MSE

everywhere
except chat, chat never dies

4:38 PM
> An exception occurred while processing your request. Additionally, another exception occurred while executing the custom error page for the first exception. The request has been terminated.
I am having a slight problem with chat. Every message I post appears to be posted twice, even though it's only once.

Why the outage?

The second either disappears or times out.

Please set customErrors="off" so we can see the stack trace

lol

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog same here
@peterh SE didn't pay the rent....

4:40 PM
@rene They are an U.S. company with around 100 employee! It is impossible that they did not pay it.

Nothing is impossible

Once even the m$ did not pay his yearly domain fee... and a nice people simply allocated their domain ;-)

Unfortunately, he gave it back on the spot
Unfortunately, he gave it back on the spot

4:42 PM
echo

@peterh Mind hitting "cancel" instead of "retry" on the spurious second message timeouts?

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog At the moment I was not yet sure that the first message arrived, but okay

They're arriving alright

They should have long switched to linux + postgresql

sure, that would be easy

4:45 PM
"Server Error in '/' Application."
@rene No, it would be f*g hard, they should rewrite their whole system
@rene I once started a linux+postgresql+mono fork of the SEDE.

@rene It could be useful even for non-SE tasks. Essentially, it had became a pgadmin

> We're having a SQL Server instability issue and digging into it now.

Do we panic yet?

I already did

4:48 PM
Let's go suggest Nick looks for the answer on StackOverflow. I'm sure he has never heard that joke before.
2

It's already been done.

oh, that's a cool notification at the top of my chat window
"timeout"

Let's redirect everything for now to Yahoo! Answers. No one will notice ....

(As in, not in the distant past, but in the 5 minutes)

@MarkAmery people are predictable

4:50 PM
Oh, look, it's the Trebuchet font!

for a brief moment there was a products advert, but it turned back into the error page

With ads not running everyone is on high alert

Who wants to bet if it was a regex bomb or a query mishap or what have you?
I'm sure we'll get a write up later
Chat is also affected it seems, I see my messages double...

@Magisch I do! I'll bet it's an SQL Server instability issue

I am having a slight problem with chat. Every message I post appears to be posted twice, even though it's only once.
Strange, it doesn't happen with message onebox

4:55 PM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah but what kind of stability issue :p

But if you do it twice in a row, it happens
Okay, now the site is in read-only mode

So I did panic. What do I do next?

@rene bloom?

Oh, nice SEDE didn't go bust. So we can still find our answers there

I hope it was not caused by some over-use

5:01 PM
Oh, but SEDE is running in Colorado and I assume they didn't failover with the main stuff.

Pan? Pan! Panic!?

Rob
Meta and SO are back up (in NA) and running RO mode.

@rene funny, this reminds me when someone said about their office not paying their internet fee...

@MetaAndrewT. was it me?

@rene Also Shog is in Colorado

5:09 PM
The server is in his closet?

@rene I'm now getting "An exception occurred while processing your request. Additionally, another exception occurred while executing the custom error page for the first exception. The request has been terminated."

I check for colorado IT jobs. First I need to check on the Wikipedia, what is its capital city. Maybe Denver? Yes, Denver! I know it, I've seen it in the South Park

I think we should panic the panic now...

Oh geez ... I hadn't seen this new frontpage yet ...

Denver looks nice, although maybe a little bit dusty
I've fixed a bug without using SO!
I used the docs of the framework, and its source.

@Bart what can we say ... Welcome new user!

anyway, I think I can take a rest and put my mod head off for a while...

I hope you mean "hat" @MetaAndrewT.

5:23 PM
"We are bringing the network up in read-only mode while we investigate what locked a SQL up hard. We'll return to read-write mode shortly."
I think some failover clustering would be useful

inb4: then they did it all wrong

It's isn't called a FAIL-over for nothing

Best vaporware ever ....

Meanwhile...

Q: What enterprise system is deploying these OS’s?

DanRanI need to Identify this enterprise system that is deploying these OS’s from similarities in the graphical user interface, background, color scheme, etc. Is this docker? So, due to lengthy reasons that I cant explain without sounding too silly or crazy, I am part of a targeted attack (no I’m not ...

... didn't I see that post before?

5:34 PM
@rene what about the vaporware you're using to generate your blur?

wHoAaAa... looks like it's back... online...

@Bart Yeah, probably here ;)

5:58 PM
Wow, I bet QPD would double if we get read-only status everyday.

Q: "Offline for maintenance" error message shows incorrect site name

gparyaniA short while ago, this site was down for maintenance. However, the error page shown during said maintenance period incorrectly stated the name of this site: As you probably know, this site is actually called "MathOverflow". Can this please be fixed? (Note that unlike the /error page, it...

meh

6:19 PM
Apparently featured was starting to look too much like Hot Meta Posts; so, they yanked a cable. ;)

the cable got too hot to handle

6:48 PM
@rene Well... it is an interesting task, how to test a failover cluster on a productive system.
@rene You have a running SEDE instance? Do you have a github fork?

@peterh yes (not fully populated) and yes.

@rene Do you know that it would be far better than a pgAdmin? The lack of a correct postgresql GUI is a big disadvantage of the db!

If you say so, sure

@rene Btw, I think the real cause of the outage was the summer. My experience is that although any important system work since decades in cooled rooms, on same mysterious reason, the probability of outages are still higher in summer.
@rene Are you from the USA?

Nope
@peterh that doesn't even sound implausible ....

7:03 PM
@rene Maybe 1) somehow the increased power need of the cooling makes a lesser stable power supply. 2) And the people working on the systems, are not always cooled, making more bad or risky decisions. 3) there might be various routers or other devices (laptops, switches) interacting with these devices and also they are not always cooled.
@rene .nl?

7:36 PM
...is it bad that I recognized that @JourneymanGeek wrote the newest answer to my question just from the first couple lines? :P

#signsofastalker

@peterh that is what user profile says, yes. So it must be true.

Remember rene? He used to be in focus.
He was in Focus, then he moved to the Netherlands.

@Aibobot Seems a drop odd that as a non-staff member you'd even be able to feature something across the network...

I'm sleep
No... my mind is tired, but my body feels so refreshed...

@Mithrandir Back before the MSO/MSE split, did the tag on then-MSO only feature the post on SO?

I wasn't around back then, I have no idea.

Because if it did, then Trilogy mods would be able to feature things across the network.

8:18 PM
Did the tag even exist back then?

@Mithrandir looks like it, at least since 2010 meta.stackexchange.com/a/64703/241919
Nooo!!! My shiny 5th DiamonD!!!!1!eleven! :( — ChrisF ♦ Dec 19 '13 at 14:35
fun(ny) coincidence :)

8:57 PM
@rene :-) It is true :-) Thanks!

1 hour later…
10:07 PM
In a chat room spawned by moving comments to chat... who is the room owner?
appears as though it's

10:47 PM
@Mithrandir well the system doesn't differentiate.
@Bart was on meta

11:09 PM
@KevinB logically one would assume OP

11:27 PM
I need to add falkon to the unsupported but works list

the room spawned from sara’s post appears to have no owner, just made me think. maybe in the event a mod moves something like that to chat, they should stick around to act as the “room owner”, or appoint someone relevant, so that at least there’s someone there with the ability to move stuff to the trash/mute if needed... but that’s kinda complicated. maybe it’s fine like it is

11:45 PM
Ah

11:57 PM
@Mithrandir that's probably normal
