@Bookends yep, and either a) I can't read, b) the mod can't read or c) question framing is overrated.
probably either A or C

11:21 AM
@Derpy what? No idea what you mean, sorry. (And yes, saw you meant it to be about the ExpressVPN rant)
@Bookends why closed??
"Is [company name here] using hidden trackers or spyware?" is totally legit question on site like Information Security.

@ShadowWizard the mod said:

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in answer, bad keyword with email in answer (171): An undergraduate admitted they would hire a freelancer to do their work for them. What should I do? by Get Help on academia.SE

While we appreciate your concern, this is off-topic here. This is either a question for ExpressVPN support or for SuperUser. — schroeder ♦ Jan 29 '16 at 15:44

@Derpy yeah, saw that. What about it? I think he's wrong, posted a reply too.

as usual, the question has two parts: an initial rant and the actual question.
the actual question is:
> I would like to monitor the .exe to see what other connections it makes, any suggestions on how to (on Windows)?
the fact that he wants to do that because he thinks something odd is happening with the vpn is only the why.
So, yep, I fail to see why it would be Off Topic on that site, and I am glad I am not the only one.

11:28 AM
Well, mod posted a new comment, worth reading.

The question are multiparts and made it... "annoying". The title asks if ExpressVPN is spyware/malware, but the body asks how to monitor it. The ExpressVPN dev answered the title.

@Bookends and the correct course of action is to fix the title.

@Derpy no it will invalidate the answer.

@ShadowWizard it wouldn't. The answer is already a frame challenge by itself, but a valid one since it actually explains what is happening without the need to further analyze the issue.
that again, assuming that the OP is fine with believing to the vpn company and doesn't want to perform the tests himself.

11:37 AM
> I am getting down votes and now banned forever for asking a really easy questions. I thought this website is supposed for beginners as well as intermediate programmers.
daily life of meta site

@Bookends I don't know, I don't have enough elements to judge.
Only thing that I can say is that I can totally see users wanting to avoid joining / contributing to specific sites "thanks" to the local community. If that is the case, I don't know.
To be fair, I for one try to stay away from Arqade despite being probably able to contribute there.

@Bookends hehe, totally

@Bookends One more expression of miscommunicated expectations leading to unwelcomingness
Not the system itself, but what people expect from it

@Magisch people will always expect to have their question or answer upvoted at least 100 times, and give them at least 10 gold badges.

Also, as fallacious as that question is, the -22 feels just a bit gratuitous

11:42 AM
So it's impossible to make them happy.

some people are going to have impossible expectations, but the # of people can be reduced

nah, don't think so.
If there will be lower limit of -8 for example, you really think it will make a differnce?

apparently the OP is learning for GCSE... I just checked some of the questions and really looks like XY-problem :(

Then when it won't, the limit will be -5... etc.. until all new questions will get auto upvote, and won't be able to have negative score.
And that will be the end of SE.

> How to replace a value in a array using .append()?

11:44 AM
@ShadowWizard I don't advocate for a limit, but personally I don't downvote below -3 unless I want to make a statement
at that point it's no longer visible on the homepage and any additional downvotes just increment a number

-3 means "meh, it's not really a good question". -22 means "It's a really bad question".
The difference is important.

for whom?

for those who care about site contents and quality.
Both will also be auto deleted in a week, assuming they're closed.

I think -3 is just as bad as -22 but maybe the -22 had something in it that got meta's goat

@Magisch you have the right to think so, all good, but just better not enforce that view on others who don't think this way. That's my point. :)

11:48 AM
dont get me wrong I'm not for enforcing any of that
it's a personal choice

(e.g. with feature requests to have minimum score for posts)
@Magisch good. :)
status-eating-cake

The same personal choice for me not to upvote anything on HNQ unless I know it's on-topic...

hehe, yeah...
I don't upvote to not "inflate" the hotness.
As I do agree with @gnat about some of his views, e.g. that questions stay there for too long.
I won't go as far as blocking upvotes from users who reached by clicking the HNQ sidebar link though.
i.e. this is just personal choice same as @Magi and his downvotes. :)

Is there a stack query which let's you know the percentage of users on a specific site whose home site is that site?

what is "home site"? do you mean "parent user" on the chat profile? or the first account created on SE?
or having the highest rep on that site?

12:04 PM
The first account
I was just curious
Because I never knew about the se network only knew about stack overflow

Maybe SEDE wizard can help with that (I'm not :)

@Magisch And indicating that sometimes is useful, and sometimes all the way up to counterproductive

@Tinkeringbell No I know him from Chem, that's why I watted
Hi Spyware! Questions about answer deletions are supposed to go on the meta of the specific site an answer was deleted on. I think people already tried to communicate this on your previous question as well. Feel free to re-ask about deletion on the other site, but remember that asking is different from demanding and keep in mind that your posts are much more likely to be well received and answered when you ask nicely what led to the deletion/what must be done to get it in a suitable shape for undeletion. — Tinkeringbell ♦ 2 hours ago

Nice huh? :D

Tink I think someone should just tell this guy "zomg dood, ur rigth all along, SE is affiliated with Expresswhatever and they've hidden it from the public" so he could sleep better at night but that's just me

I'm still holding back to post on meta, whether showing closed questions on Filtered Questions is a good idea or not...

Haha you don't let go

12:16 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ If they genuinely want to know why their answer was deleted, I hope my comment helped. Otherwise, having it on the specific site doesn't do any harm, site mods can handle these kinds of behaviours and having that recorded on the site the problem is happening makes it possible for those site mods to make better informed decisions ;)
@Bookends I think there's also this thing where people leave letters out making them easier to misinterpret, and somehow that always ends with people recognizing sexually loaded words instead of the more innocent alternative

One of my biggest pet peeves is folks leaving reviews like "I spent two years on this game and I've only gotten to level 3!" and immediately excluding any other possibility than the game sucking

I just checked on the latest answer, on a question posted in 2011...
well, there's nothing wrong with that, but...

@Bookends I think my first answer on Movies SE was on a really old post, and it got me over 200 rep in upvotes + a bounty :D
Sorry, I exaggerated. Must've counted the association bonus ;) 8 upvotes and 50 bounty points :)

Extra old questions requires extra ordinary answers(?)

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ spent a lot of time on Undertale, still at LV 0.

12:21 PM
@Bookends Was a post from '16, answered about a year later in '17. So not that extra old to begin with, I guess. But I enjoyed answering that one, as it was basically just finding and translating some Dutch sources.

12:37 PM
@Magisch I'm curious about 1 thing I observed on TWP, so if you have time & comfortable with answering this... What do you think about using meta for reopening closed questions? Because AFAIC see, there are like, 2 obvious groups: the closers and the reopeners.

Character limits always strike at the most inoppo

@Bookends no mods?
(i.e. flag?)
@JohnDvorak inoppo? Is this some kind of hippo?
If so, the hippo is really poor, character limit can hurt badly.
:D

no close/reopen wars, just a meta post inviting to reopen a question. I'm curious, don't they check the review and choose meta instead?

@Bookends probably not

But I guess it's already their site's policy so, yeah...

12:43 PM
Looking at their meta now, there's not much going on on the first page of new questions with regard to reopening... but I spent a few months on Workplace last year, and seem to remember meta being regularly used for such requests.

@Bookends I think its fine for people to have priorities, and I think meta is fine for discussing closures
In theory its not problematic if someone just reopens or just closes, as long as the closings and reopenings are ok

1:02 PM
@Magisch k, good to know :)

BTW @JourneymanGeek wonder if your army uniform looks like this?
(not yours personally ;))
That one is part of a failed pilot for our army... the soldiers in the pilot complained the uniform isn't comfortable, makes them sweat more, and looks like the enemy uniform, thus will result in lots more friendly fire cases during war.
So the army just spent millions over nothing. :/

could switch to this one?

@Derpy this will surely make the enemy think twice before attacking the soldiers... :D

1:09 PM
@ShadowWizard well, if said soldier could then react like the original wearer of said uniform does....

@Derpy well... also... looks like it's based on Nazi uniform, from quick look on the game info... so doubt our army will use it. :)
But I didn't find what special powers they have in the game, didn't search that far yet.
Hey @Pritish and welcome to Tavern! Awesome game you have there. :D

@ShadowWizard I think you may have flipped sides there. The story IS somehow based on WWII (and the international version also uses a map based on Europe) but you got the two factions wrong

So without permalink, only way to share is via screenshots. Which is also fine. :)

anyway, I would worry about something else there.

@Derpy which is?

1:19 PM

@Derpy woman with a gun. What's wrong with that?
Or is it the boots which worries you? ;)

@ShadowWizard that is a skirt, not short pants. Doesn't seem very pratical
(nor does the bow-tie)

@Derpy oh.
Well, those uniform appear to be just the "official" type, not the field type.
In our army, soldiers get both types of uniform.

She is a scout in the game. ^_^'

So for training/war they go with the field uniform which don't look nice, but are practical.

@Tinkeringbell I was referring to the two-tailed fox character Tails, from my namesake franchise

pff, two tails is overrated

A certain someone with big knuckles doesn't need tails to fly

@Tinkeringbell yeah. I was referring to my drawing. I'm guessing that's what @SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog was referring to when he said turtles don't have eyes.

@Catija Well, turtles have eyes, and sheep do have tails. So both drawings are horrible? :P
To be honest I had missed neither yet ;)

Oh, and monster trucks.

And a chicken? duck?

Is that a shark?

Yeah. He didn't ask for those, though... that was me drawing anything other than dump trucks, excavators and trains for variety.
Rocket - duck.

Hey cat

Hey! Saw your nomination on TWP.

@Mithrandir Can I get a ... let's say green, as it isn't there yet ... freehand circle showing where you see a shark?

I'm guessing Mith is talking about the rocket.

But that's clearly a rocket, not a shark!

The army sent me three different dates to come in for a chat, so I need to go check my automatically created profile on their website to see which of those three dates they actually want me to come into. They sent me a password in the mail to get in to it, so I open up the site, put in my ID number and the password... and it's not working. Great. >.<

Sounds like that means you're exempt :D

maybe it is a test.

You'll just have to come at all three dates.
Also,

@Catija Don't I wish :P It just means I have to pick up the phone and actually talk to them.
(I'm bad at phone calls.)

@JohnDvorak exactly what I was going to sugest

@Mithrandir From working in retail, I created a sort of phone persona. It's not me, it's the happy, helpful customer service person. Doesn't make the calls any easier but it's an act rather than just me.
