Q: 2018: a year in spam

ArtOfCodeEnd-of-year posts seem to have become the tradition these days, so I'm back again with a third Year in Spam. Welcome back, folks, to another round of statistics you never needed to know. All times/dates are UTC. The Big Number In total, we saw 35,636 spam posts this year across the network. Th...

Any idea how to center-align a line of text in SE posts? I tried using <center></center> and <p></p>, but they don't seem to work.
You can't.
@andmyself Thanks.
6:52 AM
@Blue <pre>, and some decorative skills
But it would naturally have an Ex Machina feeling to it
And presumably will break when it's viewed on other medium (e.g. mobile web/app)
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Heh, interesting.
@andmyself Also make little kittens unhappy throughout the world
I have another question --- I recently started using the AutoReviewComments userscript. I noticed that using $SITENAME$ SE automatically makes it pick up the corresponding site name. Is there any similar command to make it automatically pick up the username (so that I don't have to type out "Hi, <username>." everytime)?
It would be even better if it could automatically pick up only the first name of the user on whose post I'm trying to comment on.
7:04 AM
[username] will be replaced with the user's name (or just 'user' if nothing was found), and [OP] with the original poster's name (if found, else 'OP'). Also, $MYUSERID$ will be replaced with your user id for the current site.
@andmyself Nice! Is there a list of these somewhere?
Well, that's the 8th bullet on that Stack Apps entry...
I need to customise mine a bit more ;p
@andmyself Oh, damn, I had missed that. :)
7:09 AM
Unfortunately, this issue still remains. I temporarily fixed it using space characters but web developers would mock me for that.
Its ok, not all of us are webdevs ;p
As long as it works...
@Blue Journeyman is a web dev and he's mocking you right now
I can hear his laughing from 5000 miles away
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Should be under 4,000 I think.
@Alex Chemists always add a few extra for good measure
Maybe laughs take a circuitous route.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Haw! Traitors, traitors...all around!
7:56 AM
@EKons several stars went nova
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Wrong. Only 3893.512 miles.
@ShadowWizard Well he's laughing in the opposite direction
Pretty sure that's how it works
Or maybe laughing diagonally
Laughing on floor rolling
@andmyself Laugh siren
Heh, my new custom comment meant for new users is almost twice the word limit:

Hi, [username]. Welcome to $SITENAME$ SE! Keep these in mind: 1. Images or screenshots of text, code and mathematical expressions in Q&As is discouraged all over SE. (c.f. this Meta SE post). 2. It's mandatory to use MathJax to properly typeset mathematical expressions when writing Q&As here. Please go through this short MathJax tutorial. 3. Use appropriate tags.
4. Use correct English grammar and spellings. 5. State the exact source when citing text or images, with attribution. 6. Use good titles for your questions. You may consider dropping into [chat] before asking a question, so that we can guide you. I've [edit]ed your question this time, but it would be really annoying for us to do it on your behalf every time.
I wonder if I can shorten it. Or maybe I just need to split it up into two comments. :P
Post it as an answer. Then you have all the space you need. #helpful
The funny thing is that it's not uncommon to come across posts which have all the 6 issues.
@Bart Hehe, not a bad idea. ;)

@Derpy yay, 2019 has officially started.

@andmyself @Glorfindel doubt ? I haven't enough rep to cast delete vote. US ask conformation for "Are you sure you want to down-/close-/delete vote and post a welcoming comment?" . May I still eligible to use that US.

@Shree AFAIK, the US will check your privilege and only do what you can do
hence down- or close- or delete vote

That said, I guess our residence's woof is taking a break?
I'm pretty sure my answer didn't score in the top 25
@Magisch so does(n't?) mine. But I still have hope.
A new hope.
@Magisch 30th.
10:40 AM
If it's anything like the cheese contest, I wouldn't give up hope yet.
Everybody get Swag Swatch!
@PeterTaylor Due to the response we'll very likely be creating more winning slots and a quick glance at the entries shows me that anything that wasn't really done with any care or good faith got downvoted pretty uniformly, so I don't see any immediate problem, but we will consider it when we do the next one like this. The auto-protect issue combined with it being kinda hard to get an answer noticed after the first ~20 does leave folks looking for some legit way of getting more attention to their answer without being spammy. No harm this time, but thanks for pointing it out. — Tim Post ♦ Dec 11 '18 at 13:33
It depends on the batch size they can order. IIRC for the cheese contest, they could only order in batches that didn't work out to exactly 25, so they had extras. if they can single-order the watches, thats that.
@Magisch There's still a half-assed promise of more winning slots ;)
Making it a nice round 30 would do then :P
TBH... I wrote an answer to that feature request about swag contest announcements and then kept thinking about stuff...

Does anyone else think votes on their post dried up a bit after their post ended up behind that looong answer with all those SO screenshots?
@Magisch based on my research, I think they had to order 50 cheese boards
10:43 AM
And what do you all usually look for in a swag contest post when voting?
I pretty much only got any votes before that
I didn't vote much on the contests, some of the submissions are brutally long and I don't really have the time to fully read posts that long
I'm thinking not many people may have scrolled past that really long answer.
I only cast delete votes in swag contests ...
Though EmC's answer got around 40 votes while never having been before that post.
@rene You're a fun person! :P
I only swag delete casts in vote contests
10:46 AM
@Tinkeringbell and you haven't yet seen it all ;)
@Magisch Person :P are a fun you!
I've been thinking... If you'd be presented with answers randomly... and the page would look like e.g. meta.stackexchange.com/questions/318910/…
Would you vote on anything?
@Tinkeringbell got not many votes, but they were spread during all the contest. I think not many realized there was something to click in the calendar in the first place
If all 157 answers there (including now-deleted ones) were to be presented to you at the same time, in an election like system... would you be willing to go through all of them to vote?
@Tinkeringbell Effort and coolness.
10:48 AM
Also, I think some saw the calendar BEFORE December started and never came back
@Derpy Like I said in a comment somewhere: Sometimes a quick 'hey look I found something fun but it's in the bottom pile' to a chatroom can do a lot ;)
@Mithrandir How would you describe effort?
self-promotion :p
What would be 'low effort thus low quality'?
(I gotta put some laundry in the washer, brb)
need to induce meta chat effect...
@Tinkeringbell that was what I proposed, so I think the answer should be clear. But I will be honest and also add that if I was unlucky enough to get a long enough chain of lame enough submissions I may stop there and never go further.
10:50 AM
If it looks like it took more than ten seconds, then it had effort. If the poster did original work, it had effort. If it's cool enough (subjectivity alert), it's cool. If it has lots of code, my eyes might glaze over.
If I like the idea, it's cool.
@Mithrandir (coooooopy a picture, change a lineeeeeeeee)
Something low-effort and boring - such as a random photo that they didn't create - won't get an upvote.
@Mithrandir oh, were we thinking about the same thing?
But seriously, probably a gallery page like... DeviantArt (the one I can only think currently) or Winter Bash, where the main page shows the thumbnails, and when it's clicked, it will open the entry with comment and voting (yeah, that's too much effort for SE to implement...)
@andmyself DeviantMalwertising?
10:53 AM
I put hours into my silly video, and it didn't get many votes. I admit that was slightly disappointing :p
I mean... I literally learned video editing for that!
Well, that's the prize for you :p
"Video Editing" GET!
@andmyself I think contests here ... suffer a bit from an 'Imgur-effect' :P
The majority of people go to the front-page, and they rely on a small group of dedicated people to put good stuff on there. Then they just chime in with an upvote
And to be honest, I don't really see how random ordering, announcements, election like systems... are going to change that mindset.
You need to have people that are willing to browse those long enough chains of lame submissions to find the stuff that deserves an upvote.
I think listing them as thumbnails might help, even if it maybe is an impossible task...
@andmyself Thumbnails of code snippets are then never going to look attractive enough to attract attention.
Personally, that would mean I'd open the bits that have pictures that look interesting, not the stories, not the ascii art, not the code snippets.
11:00 AM
I agree that's a problem...
And then you need to be lucky enough that if you have a picture, it's added in the thumbnail.
Well, that's just my random brainstorming, since I didn't even participate and vote any of it :S
You didn't even vote on mine?!
I suppose that I am putting too much hope in the "Ehy! It's Derpy! Let's see what nonsense it posted this time" effect
@Tinkeringbell Just to be fair! ;p
11:04 AM
@Derpy That can work against you too: "Oh hey look, Tink is rep-farming again!" :P
@andmyself Okay. But only because I like being fair more than upvotes ;)
@Mithrandir well, that's worth more than any rep or even swag. :)
heh, @andmyself said the same. (yeah, I reply first, read later lol)
just like I very rarely vote on HNQ even if it's interesting, unless I know it's suitable on the site...
@Tinkeringbell That could be easily solved: give me a free diamond so I have no need to try to reach 10k anymore.
@Derpy I have one, it doesn't solve the problem ;) I like the contests because they usually give me some kind of crazy creative idea.
I can't help being a crazy creative person? :P
diamond + crazy = chaos
11:08 AM
I have managed to create very little chaos so far :)

@rene Not during night :D
@ShadowWizard you won't be able too, they will keep you awake with questions and stuff.
11:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek you mean the ordinary mods being torn apart in the employee only rooms? ;)
@Derpy so far no questions. :D
@Shree Castling?!
Castling is a move in the game of chess involving a player's king and either of the player's original rooks. It is the only move in chess in which a player moves two pieces in the same move, and it is the only move aside from the knight's move where a piece can be said to "jump over" another.Castling consists of moving the king two squares towards a rook on the player's first rank, then moving the rook to the square over which the king crossed. Castling may only be done if the king has never moved, the rook involved has never moved, the squares between the king and the rook involved are unoccupied...
> The notation for castling, in both the descriptive and the algebraic systems, is 0-0
@ShadowWizard We can't go into employee only rooms ;) We just have our own room and hope people drop by :P
@Shree as they all do, this appears to be ordinary "oops, forgot I had that silly question deleted years ago". (99% of the cases for those saying "and I don't have any deleted questions.")
@ShadowWizard remember to post them on Sci&Fi, there are 76 questions currently - meaning I need 24 more for the tag badge
11:20 AM
Not judging, just saying he's not the first or the last to get question ban.

@Glorfindel wrong dupe, the user is asking for past Bash dates, not for what happens after Bash closure.

the first one had a busted arm rest
@JourneymanGeek :( Mine arrived with one arm-rest already broken during transport. I got a replacement pretty easily. The good thing about Ikea stuff is that you can always keep the broken thing for spare parts :P

@Tinkeringbell @JourneymanGeek just to be sure, you don't mind if I occasionally use a self flag to get some abusive user profile deleted right? I'm not going to flood you with flags, maybe just a single flag per day, and anyway would wait for it to be processed before posting another.
Oh, it's fine
mostly planning to clean up the more offensive ones.
3:33 PM
in PSE, a mod has opted to be pinged with a list of user links when new bad accounts appear
could be an option, my idea was to not have to post spam smoke here.
furthermore, I don't want to advertise those profiles by posting the links there.
@JohnDvorak on SU we have a room for mod contacts
@Derpy thought at some point you need to diversify your flag target posts
We can see old flags on a post
If there's a bunch, you could just ping me with a list of user IDs as opposed to profiles
@JourneymanGeek If you have some way to protect it, we could create a "leave users to delete here, we will do it when we have time" room here.
Hmm. For now just flag. We'll think of what we can do in future
