My home isn't equipped with a chimney...there's just a small exhaust pipe for the enclosed fireplace.

That's a chimney. No?
Nice thing you have a fireplace in your home... is it a private house i.e. not inside a building?

@ShadowWizard My residence in San Diego...it's a single family home.

But is it a building? Or a one story house?

@ShadowWizard It's a two-story house.

Nice. :)
So, that's how your house looks like? @Sonic

11:16 AM
@ShadowWizard Yep, pretty much...
The walls on mine look plainer, though.

My house is in a building, it went through a serious overhaul recently which took 3 years. Now the building look and feel almost as new even though it's actually 40+ years old. :D
(they also added two new floors, so now it's 6 floors instead of 4 floors)
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog well, guess your home didn't win any awards... :) 24-7pressrelease.com/press-release/175061/…

My relatives in India did something similar, massively renovating their house and extending it from 1 floor to 2
@ShadowWizard Well, to be fair, the same builder mentioned there built ours, and it's what's inside that matters...

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog yep sounds similar. Here the government helps a bit with those trying to encourage people to make their houses more resilient to earthquakes.

California is very prone to earthquakes

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog oh. Nice! :D
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog so is Israel, in general.

11:21 AM
So our house is built up to earthquake standards

Here most old buildings are not. :/

The San Andreas Fault is a continental transform fault that extends roughly 1,200 kilometers (750 mi) through California. It forms the tectonic boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate, and its motion is right-lateral strike-slip (horizontal). The fault divides into three segments, each with different characteristics and a different degree of earthquake risk. The slip rate along the fault ranges from 20 to 35 mm (0.79 to 1.38 in)/yr.The fault was identified in 1895 by Professor Andrew Lawson of UC Berkeley, who discovered the northern zone. It is often described as having...

The Great Rift Valley is a continuous geographic trench, approximately 6,000 kilometres (3,700 mi) in length, that runs from Lebanon's Beqaa Valley in Asia to Mozambique in Southeastern Africa. The name continues in some usages, although it is today considered geologically imprecise as it combines features that are today regarded as separate, although related, rift and fault systems. Today, the term is most often used to refer to the valley of the East African Rift, the divergent plate boundary which extends from the Afar Triple Junction southward across eastern Africa, and is in the process of...

San Diego is lower-risk, though...LA is much higher

Hey why no picture in my onebox? :(

11:23 AM
@Shadow Is it true that in Ben Gurion Airport, you have to arrive 4 hours before your flight due to the insane amount of security?

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog depends when, but yes in peak hours that's true.

@ShadowWizard Out of curiosity, what security risk do you usually get deemed as, out of 6? (It's the first digit in the barcode they put on your passport.)

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog no idea, never checked.
Think I kept the barcode from my last flight, will check later when back at home.
(passport is in the drawer next to my bed)
My wife got the SSSS twice in a row in USA thogh.
39
Q: What does "SSSS" on my boarding pass mean?

user82When I checked in for my American Airlines flight from Costa Rica back to the States, I noticed that my boarding pass had "SSSS" printed across the top left corner. Nobody else in my party had this on their boarding pass, and I didn't notice that I was treated differently at the airport (securit...

not to be confused with SSSR

11:31 AM
Heh, I got the SSSS once, on a flight from Paris to LAX. Perhaps the fact that my incoming connection was from India on an airline with (false) claims of being associated with terrorism and a recent money-smuggling incident involving a crew member was to blame?

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog maybe. Never figured why my wife got it.
Oh.... and in our latest flight back to Israel from Switzerland my son got it. Not SSSS, it's something different there, but he was chosen for random check and got personally checked by a security officer. o_o

@ShadowWizard If you suspect you're on a watchlist of some sort, you can appeal to the U.S. government, and if found to be valid, they'll give you a "redress number" to enter into airline reservations that (at least in theory) will prevent you from being flagged
@ShadowWizard TSA does random inspections on all flights here.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog nah, it didn't affect me (yet) and my wife found it rather amusing. :)

3 degrees, feels like -1. Ugh, I don't want to go outside

Then stay in ?
Or dress up. -1 is manageable ;)

11:38 AM
@Tinkeringbell my students would love that :)

@AndrasDeak See, fixed!

@AndrasDeak why would they care if you're dressed up with warm clothes?

@Shadow The biggest security incident we've ever gone through is when we were booked to fly Mumbai-Munich-Frankfurt-Los Angeles. My parents didn't have the right visa to enter the Schengen area to catch our domestic leg, so we were of course refused entry and had to stay in a "cell" for a couple of hours, until we eventually got the immigration officer to let us speak with an airline agent.

11:40 AM
what do you mean?

@ShadowWizard They probably wouldn't
The point is mainly that it's just too cold to go outside :P

@AndrasDeak ohhh... you replied to the "stay in" from @Tinker, thought you replied to the "dress up" message. facepalm :D

have another coffee :P

@ShadowWizard You were supposed to keep me awake today, not the other way round :P

!!/coffee me

11:41 AM
@ShadowWizard brews a cup of Espresso for @me

The issue was solved because a handful of passengers were slated to fly DEL-MUC-LAX and the DEL-MUC flight got cancelled, so those seats on the MUC-LAX flight became empty and we snagged them. The airline was fined an unknown amount for letting passengers without the right visa onboard.

@SmokeDetector Wrong! You were supposed to brew for Shadow, not keep it yourself.
Bad bot.

Sad part is, a few friends were booked on that DEL-MUC flight
!!/coffee Shadow

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog brews a cup of Ristretto for @Shadow

11:42 AM
Kinda reminds me of a google spreadsheet I saw...

@Tinkeringbell Problem solved.

It listed instances of people telling an AI to learn to do something and it having unexpected results :)

by the way I wouldn't mind the cold but it's been drizzling all day

Like 'Play Tetris without dying for as long as possible' and the AI learned to pause the game.

Does coffee turn hedgehogs black?

11:43 AM
@AndrasDeak Oh that's nasty weather.

@Tinkeringbell there's also some evolutionary game where the AI started cheating

I don't mind full blown rain but drizzling gets under umbrellas a lot more.

@Shadow - my grandparents usually give ~100USD

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog whoa, sounds scary. Glad it ended with this. :)

@AndrasDeak Yeah, this was a cool list ;)
I think there were a few such instances on that list too

11:44 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog only real black coffee, i.e. Turkish Coffee. I have 3 of those during the day, and one during the night.

@Derpy What turns hedgehogs blue?

@Mithrandir wow, not bad. Hope you're using it wisely! ;)

11:47 AM
These are the kinds of shit that will exterminate us one day

Nah.... I really don't think so.

....totally not planning on buying more camera equipment

"Computer, maximize well-being on the planet!" "Affirmitive, exterminating all humans"

We'll exterminate ourselves before we'll let any AI do it.

I hope by then people will have learned not to command that

@Mithrandir hehe

also totally not planning on creating a YouTube channel

you never have too much camera equipment ;)

@Tinkeringbell yeah, sure, people are totally going to know better

11:49 AM
@Mithrandir It costs money these days?! :/

@AndrasDeak Hence I hope :P

...the camera stuff does

It's about all I can do to not fall into 'I despair they won't have learned' :P

@ShadowWizard Well, you do have to give away your bank info to get deposits from monetization

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog huh

11:50 AM
Stephen Hawking once said, "artificial intelligence can be a real danger; it can design improvements to itself and overthrow us all".

> Neural nets evolved to classify edible and poisonous mushrooms took advantage of the data being presented in alternating order, and didn't actually learn any features of the input images
hehehe, talk about branch prediction failure

> Trump: Send two nukes on Moscow, please.
> AI: But sir, it will kill more than 2000000 people. Sure you want to continue?
> Trump: Of course you stupid machine!
> AI: Sir, please don't curse.
> Trump: Send those nukes now or I will take your head off!
> AI: Sir, I don't have a head.

@AndrasDeak I also love the one where the AI learned that a picture of something with a ruler was more likely to be cancerous than one of something without :P

11:53 AM
@Tinkeringbell hehehe, creepy

@ShadowWizard Send two nukes on Moscow? Sorry, no vehicles by that brand found :P

@Tinkeringbell I saw recently something about a "smart door" not recognizing the owner due to batman on his shirt.... :D
(so it identified him as batman, who isn't on its whitelist of allowed people.....)

Who wouldn't whitelist batman!?

What if there's an emergency?
I hope that door has an emergency mode...

11:56 AM
@Tinkeringbell hey, don't underestimate my vision of future AI! :P

AFAIK, it went into defensive mode instead... with turrets and such...

@andmyself Cool. Now I want one :P
I'll be in the turret library if people are looking for me ;)

Found it!

That's just 'new people seen' :P

11:58 AM
But it's at kid height, so it's kinda correct :P

Think the story was he got locked out, called support, and that's what they found in the logs.

Nice ;)
My dad once hung up a security cam... then lost access to his e-mail because the cam triggered by a moving branch on a very windy day a lot, and he was e-mailing himself or something and sending soo many e-mails people thought he was a spammer.

@Tinkeringbell Not for the poor man... :D

Took some calling to get that right again.

@Tinkeringbell LOL.... that's funny! Hope you tweeted about it? :P

12:01 PM
@ShadowWizard Still, what if there's a real emergency? Would the only option be to kick down the door? If there's e.g. a fire and you lose power before you can evacuate, will you be able to leave or will the door remain locked?

@Tinkeringbell heh, you can do that? Good to know. :)

@ShadowWizard Nah, that was pre-twitter era :P
@ShadowWizard He could, he had an e-mail through our internet providers hosting at that moment.
I don't know if it would work for e.g. gmail or hotmail :)

If we all end up building a truly sentient self learning ai then maybe humans aren't even necessary anymore
much like we don't still have neandethals around right now

@Tinkeringbell good question, I can only hope policemen/fire fighters have some secret code for such doors, or can get instant access by calling a support number available 24/7
@Tinkeringbell oh... probably not. Though gmail does ask for our own phone numbers.

@Magisch read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" if you didn't already. :)

@ShadowWizard That has more to do with 2FA, if I remember correctly ;)
Woohooo! I just did my first vtc as duplicate XD

@Tinkeringbell nah, it's used to get back access if you forgot password, happened to me once. You can choose to send secret code via SMS, you type the code, and can access your account again.

@ShadowWizard Ah, that's a good thing too ;)

Yup
@Tinkeringbell yeah, followed by my hammer. Congrats! :D

It confused me for a while... my comment was lost but the question didn't show the yellow 'on hold' until I refreshed :P

12:12 PM
@Tinkeringbell yeah the live refresh isn't perfect. :)

It's okay, I now know what to expect :P

And it's not "on hold", just duplicate.

You knew what I meant :P

Of course! :D

1:03 PM
@Tinkeringbell duplicate questions are NOT on hold! We shall not miss this chance to nitpick

Consider your chance taken then ;)

So, what did I miss about SE stuff?

Nothing much or interesting. How long were you gone exactly? :P

@Tinkeringbell time is relative
It feels like an hour ago that we were arguing about arguing about Wensel's post

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ more twitter drama...
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ oh that passed.
But I don't want to put poor tink through rehashing that unpleasantness

1:08 PM
Well I might not be on planet Earth so one hour for me is 23 years there
Only Nolan nerds and some other people get that reference.

@Tinkeringbell he was last active on June
(this year)

No, one hour ago

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ in short, we hit peak twitter, there was HNQ related drama on twitter, and a significant number of mods are unhappy

"June" means "hour" in Hebrew

eh... no, it's not.

1:11 PM
@JourneymanGeek nothing like people that don't know the context making assumptions about it in 140 characters

hour in Hebrew is "sha-a"

Did I get that right?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ actually... you got it right
anyway, there you are, caught up

@ShadowWizard so you're a time wizard in fact!
That is an interesting twist

lol
and the Hebrew word for the month June is read as "Yunni" if that's related. ;)

Joe Friend This post is now locked due to a lot of off-topic or very tangentially related issues being posted here. It's so large that it is pretty hard to find/triage issues listed. If you have a concern related to left nav, theming and/or responsiveness, then I'd encourage you to post them as a questio...

not much drama, just tons of downvotes. ;)

Nope, but I do now

Ah!

@SomethingBadHappened I don't think most people are really going to see past their paychecks.

It is hard when they are so big, and Facebook does have a lot of.cool tech.
It would be hard to leave.

and paychecks are love
well are money anyway
and there's probably very few employers you're going to find a perfect value match with
With the google thing...
they didn't want to work on the tech
here its "eh, its marketing... those scamps"

At that compensation level for average engineers you only have a handful.of choices and they're all problematic in some dimension.

1:58 PM
and marketing goes "its division 23."
@SomethingBadHappened which is why I am where I am now
Its a job. It pays money.
and bouncing back from losing your job's often a pain. Not sure if people want to rock the boat, especially considering FB's never had a cuddly corp culture.

But we are collectively pretty powerful groups with leverage. Collectively, we (or rather, employees at big tech) are in a relatively empowered position to affect change these days. (Thesis of the article.)

@SomethingBadHappened but y'all are also replacable.

True. It seems like organizing they might be a bit harder than it was for the Googlers.

Google had that old core of "don't be evil"
Facebook literally was a frat boy programming project designed to pick up girls

2:01 PM
Will they ever fall though?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ everything eventually falls

I like that the medium post says they're digging their long term graves and they probably do but they seem to big to fall

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ !!!!!! :D

We're not that replaceable. BigTechCos are all trying to suck up as much talent in each area as they can; having tens of employees demonstrating together creates a problem larger than they can fire and replace.
tens of thousands* oops :P

It could work if it's tens of Skeet

I'm joining the #googlewalkout, which feels slightly odd as I'm working from home today. Still, tools down for a while in remote solidarity.

@Catija !!!!! :D

@SomethingBadHappened Well, its google - and its an internal issue
look at how facebook is handling it?
"We have no idea who hired them, and will investigate"
and wait till people forget.

See that's what I mean
They end up doing their evil when things are quiet and there is lack of coverage

Maybe. We might need to hope for external factors there....

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Actually I was making the same arguement about mods ;)

2:05 PM
if the money is a big attractor, then a falling stock price is a big problem, since like half of their compensation is in equity.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I've missed you. :D

@SomethingBadHappened That it can be

@JourneymanGeek ehm, OK. Which argument? Uncooked pasta?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ you bet. And it leaves a trail of undying numbers.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ that at some point, we're unhappy, we can mass quit ;p

2:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek 🔥🔥🔥

but we'd possibly be replacable.
