@Somewhat why?

@ShadowWizard dunno... after eating KFC, it's just my body felt really fresh and awake until 6am

It's the hormones

O_O

@Somewhat whoa... 1) Why did you eat KFC at midnight?! 2) What do they put in there?! :P
KFC failed in Israel for some reason...

I ate it at 8pm though...
come to think of it, it's weird that I didn't get sleepy due to sugar rush 🤔

You mean meat rush... I do get sleepy after eating lots of meat/chicken.

The sadness of being right.

8:27 AM
Hey, cheer up. You're one day closer to your next weekend :D
(Or, if you want to be depressed: One day closer to your next weekend being over :P)

lol
i have wednesday to friday off

oh, you should know me by now. I can be sad because SE has once again confirmed my "pessimistic belief", but that won't really ruin my day.

@Derpy pets
I think a lot of us are having that day

I said it once and I will say it again, I have done my share of community management on UO and I have since stopped fighting windmills (even when those windmills are actual giants going rampaging while fire-ignoring dogs keep repeating "it is fine").
The shield is rusty, the lance is dull. Quixote days are a thing of past
@JourneymanGeek a free muffin would have been better, but.. thanks, I suppose?
Just don't try to give me a bag of Scooby Snacks. If you dogs like that thing... we pony don't

8:54 AM
@Derpy I don't think anyone said it was fine.

@JourneymanGeek Think you replied to the wrong message. I assume you meant to reply to the "it is fine" thing right? Sorry, that was poorly explained. It is not a direct reference to the last episode of the recent chain of events. Just a comment on my personal experience at sticking my nose into community management in the past
"who are you to come in this argument? who knows you? Paladins should be able to use poisoned weapons like every other class. There is no problem here"

@Derpy eh. Someone accused us mods of just that on meta
Yes I guess it was

wondering where @Derpy poked their nose this time

@ShadowWizard ... for a wizzard, your memory isn't that great, Shadow :P
in Shadow's Den, Aug 25 '14 at 7:49, by SPArchaeologist
@ShadowWizard (I was a seer on a private uo server.....)

9:11 AM
What is "uo"?

Ultima Online

And yeah, 4+ years is reasonable for memory to expire... :D
@Derpy umm... and... how is it related to Stack Exchange?
Thought you meant something with SE... :/
So you tried once again to manage something there and got things messed up? @Derpy
I was never part of a MMORPG community/forum - I did play bunch and posted few messages, but never took a really active part so really no idea how those forums/communities are going.
I guess it's not that nice and welcoming, and with like 99.999% teenager boys who make fun on the rest 0.001% who either don't say they are males are directly say they are females. In such case, I really don't understand why you tried to get your head into it in the first place, @Derpy.
But... maybe I'm wrong? Dunno.

@ShadowWizard Long ago, in a far far away land, there was a private UO shard. It was a small server, with little resources, but the people that created it were friends. And so that little server grew and prosper for a while, slowly getting bigger and famous as more and more people started to play there.

And then things fell apart when not-so-nice teenager kids arrived. Right?
When you open a small community to the outside, that's a risk you must take. :(

Then, a dark day, a friendship problem arose, and broke the harmony that where there. Two member of the staff fought, and one of them, a developer on the server, had the brilliant idea to take revenge on the other. So, he accused him to cheat, and went as far as to rig the server script to his disadvantage. He would take double damage, do less damage to other and a whole bunch of other random effects
The server was hosted by a gaming network that lent the required hardware in exchange of a little ads space on the server site. They stepped in in the dispute.
Before long, an even bigger mess was rampaging around. The network trusted the developer that rigged the game, and the other staff member replied with a nice "say what? I'm out of here" and went away.... taking half of the community with him.
So now the server was there, broken and ruined.

9:31 AM
Sad story! But it was 4+ years ago, no? So what has changed now that you got hurt again?

The few left tried to rebuild the community. Some tried to trust that staff developer, some lingered there only because they didn't want to restart a new character from scratch somewhere else. And a few didn't even notice the change.

I had a less interesting instance of something like this

Many changes to the gameplay where done, much trash was thrown on the old staff work now that they weren't around anymore. Much work was done to undo their work. The stories they had created. The places they had dreamed

was dev on a wow private server, had a disagreement with the owner, left, server shut down

9:44 AM
And then, in a last act of despise... Lord British was killed, taking the essence of Britannia with him. New gods were created, new factions named, character backgrounds falling in oblivion as the tapestry of the past was written out of existence.
and yet we stand there, still lingering in our smaller groups, pretending all was fine while we tried to dream a dream of normality.
But fate is a trollish beast, and history repeats.
The second staff fell of the graces of the network owners gods, and followed the destiny the first one has walked before them.

@Magisch hehe, yep that's a super TL;DR compared to @Derpy story. What did you do next?

@ShadowWizard go to another private server and started working there as a dev
the dispute was about refunding donation money

huh
@Derpy why didn't you try to do as @Magisch and become a developer/staff yourself? Or can you maybe still do it and save what's remaining of the private server, if possible?
If you're known and trusted... well... why not?

@ShadowWizard some kid got ahold of the parent's debit card and spent their rent and grocery money in the ingame shop

Sounds like you're really into that server.

9:51 AM
Blamed, accused, ostracized.... they too went away as a new staff took their place. And so a new time of changes swept the land. That time the world had to go.

the server owner didn't want to refund and wanted to in fact sue them in small claims court for the full amount back when they did a chargeback

@Magisch whoa... sounds like something the police or at least child care service should handle, not the server developers.
You can't be expected to handle such things, IMO

It was free for us to refund

It's plain stealing, though by minor, same as stealing the car, or selling the TV of the house.

the shop items had no real life value

9:53 AM
So strong was the hate, so strong was the despise, that the world was made anew. The pantheon crushed, the story resetted, as a world wide calamity crafted a story that would allow them to start from scratch.

of course they should have a grip on their kid, but the fair thing would have been to refund and be done with it
2 devs and the lead gm quit over this. We both devs sent c&d notices to the owner so he couldn't continue using our work, then the server went under

@Magisch of course not, no virtual shop items have, and yet people buy them for billions upon billions of dollars, all around the world. That's how game development companies survive.
If someone steal, it's not their role to stop them.

And so it came, an invisible foe, and the few still here escaped to a different land. It was just identical to the old one, mind you. The staff didn't make any change at the map, that would have required actual work and effort.
But the name was changed, because they felt that the name carried the memories of the old builders.

@Magisch that's the fair thing to do, sure... but server declaring "free refund of ingame shopping" won't survive long, money-wise, and that's just a cruel fact. Not fair, but business are never fair.

@ShadowWizard the catch usually is that it comes with a permanent account ban

9:59 AM
GUYS? GUYS? HAPPY CAPS LOCK DAY! :D

oh, well, the train derailed. I hope I wasn't too boring.

@Derpy NO, NO, FEEL FREE TO CONTINUE. JUST PUT CAPS LOCK ON :) (SORRY, I THOUGHT YOU WERE DONE, IT WAS SILENT FOR A LITTLE WHILE ;) )

oh, well, not much more to say.
But let me just add a little thing.
One of the original developer (or should I say music composers) of Ultima once wrote a song.

STATUS-YOU-DID-NOT-WAIT-6-8-MINUTES

it is somehow funny. The song was written long before Ultima Online was even developed, and certainly wasn't meant to be about a single, unofficial server.
yet, oddly, it fits that story pretty well.
> Long ago ran the sun on a folk who had a dream
And the heart and the will and the power:
They moved earth; they carved stone; moulded hill and channeled stream
That we might stand on the wide plains of Wiltshire.
> Now men asked who they were, how they built and wonder why
That they wrought standing stones of such size.
What was done 'neath our shade? What was pray'ed 'neath our skies
As we stood on the wyrd plains of Wiltshire.
> Oh what secrets we could tell if you'd listen and be still.
Rid the stink and the noise from our skirts.
But you haven't got the clue and perhaps you never will.
Mute we stand on the cold plains of Wiltshire.
> Still we loom in the mists as the ages roll away
And we say of our folk, "they are here!"
That they built us and they died and you'll not be knowing why
Save we stand on the bare plains of Wiltshire.
... in the end, one could say we wrote our story so that the song was about us.
> Try to not do the same, SE

@Tinkeringbell NO! PEE MUST HAVE ITS OWN DAY! IT IS MORE THAN JUST THE ORGAN MAKING IT.

@ShadowWizard IF THE PING DIDN'T, ALL THE SHOUTING IS GOING TO KEEP HIM AWAY, I GUESS :D

@Somewhat FOR THOSE THAT HAVEN'T CAUGHT UP YET: WE'RE FULL ON BUSY CELEBRATING CAPS LOCK DAY!

@Tinkeringbell ^ oooook, I guess...

@Derpy SEE THE NEXT PARAGRAPH

@Derpy I'M MORE INTERESTED IN THE FIRST SENTENCE OF THAT NEXT PARAGRAPH!

WHILE WE'RE AT IT
CAN WE GET RID OF THE HABIT OF USING CAPS LOCK FOR A SINGLE CAPITAL AT THE START OF A SENTENCE WHERE SHIFT WOULD BE MORE APPROPRIATE

10:39 AM
@ArtOfCode BUT THEN HOW WILL OUR CAPS LOCK BUTTON SEE CONSISTENT USE?

UNLESS YOU HAVE SOMEONE THAT KNOWS HOW TO USE STICKY KEYS, CAPS LOCK IS ACTUALLY AN ACCESSIBILITY THING.

@Magisch ON CAPS LOCK DAY, WHICH IS THE ONLY PURPOSE FOR WHICH IT IS NECESSARY

@ArtOfCode WHO THE HECK DOES THAT

@Mithrandir ******* EVERYONE I KNOW

THAT'S JUST PLAIN RIDICULOUS.

10:40 AM
IT BUGS ME ENDLESSLY

WE NEED TO EDUCATE THEM ON THE EVILS OF CAPS LOCK

@ArtOfCode DID THOSE PEOPLE GROW UP WITH TYPEWRITERS, PERHAPS?

@Tinkeringbell TYPEWRITERS ALSO HAVE A SHIFT KEY

@ArtOfCode BUT IF YOU'RE OLD ENOUGH TO USE A TYPEWRITER, YOU'RE ALSO MAYBE FRAIL ENOUGH AND NOT HAVE THE STRENGHT IN YOUR PINKY FINGER TO USE IT!

@Tinkeringbell THIS CONFUSES ME
HOW DO YOU HAVE THE STRENGTH TO USE CAPS LOCK BUT NOT SHIFT

10:42 AM
@ArtOfCode THE CAPS LOCK KEY WAS ADDED TO TYPEWRITERS FOR THOSE PEOPLE THAT DON'T HAVE THE STRENGHT IN THEIR PINKY FINGER TO HOLD DOWN SHIFT.
LEMME GOOGLE!

BUT NO, MOST PEOPLE I KNOW WHO DO THIS DO NOT FALL INTO THAT CATEGORY
MY COWORKERS DO IT AND THEY'RE NOT MUCH OLDER THAN ME
THEY ALSO SINGLE-FINGER SEARCH-AND-PECK AND ARE AMAZED WHEN I TYPE STUFF, SO MAYBE I SHOULDN'T BE SURPRISED

I... WOULDN'T EXPECT ROPE CLIMBING INSTRUCTORS TO GENERALLY BE THE MOST TECH SAVVY

Q: Your community’s current problems, findings, and initiatives

Nicolas ChabanovskyRemember how you started programming? I’d bet that when many of you were kids who played with graphic editors after school and at some point decided to find out what the difference between .img and .exe files was. As a result, you installed Turbo Pascal and instead of working with funny pictures,...

.... maybe it is monday....

@Derpy I'M NOT INVOLVED IN ANY INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITIES, BUT THAT DOESN'T LOOK BAD TO ME?

@Tinkeringbell I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED
HUH I GOT FASTER
NEARLY AT 80 WPM

@ArtOfCode WHAT TEST DID YOU TAKE?
I GUESS I CAN DO EVEN FASTER :P

@Derpy genuinely no clue what exactly that is
or is supposed to accomplish

10:51 AM
@ArtOfCode DANG, FORGOT TO TURN THE CAPS LOCK OFF..
> n reality, you typed 409 CPM, but you made 60 mistakes (out of 60 words), which were not counted in the corrected scores.

82 WPM

@Magisch so I am not the only one.

whatever these days

I have read the question multiple times now and I still can't understand what it is supposed to mean
I mean...
> At some point, on Stack Overflow in Russian we had gotten a lot of questions with greetings. Some users began to edit the questions, which resulted in a large number of edits in the review queue.
and
> The first step towards joint development is to start sharing our problems, findings, and initiatives with all international communities.
..... wasn't that one of the purposes of Meta in the first place?
discussing and resolving network wide issues?

@ArtOfCode GUESS I WAS AIMING FOR CPM, NOT WPM. MY WPM IS ACTUALLY BAD APPARENTLY, SOMEWHERE NEAR 60-70

10:54 AM
CPM = WPM * 5.0

@ArtOfCode NAH, AS YOU CAN SEE MY FIRST WPM WAS 60 ;) THE SECOND ATTEMPT LANDED AT 315 CPM/62 WPM

@ShadowWizard you're more optimistic then me. re: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/317087/…

@Tinkeringbell THAT'S THE FORMULA THE SITE USES TO CALCULATE

@Magisch I'm still holding out there
Else I wouldn't have bothered

11:02 AM
I half expect a blog post on how "disappointed" staff is that our community is "harassing" twitter users.
only half joking

okay. Caps lock day seems over.

@Magisch There should be some blog posts coming about the issue, but not like that ;)

@Magisch DON'T GIVE THEM IDEAS (sorry @Magisch)

@Magisch Well, I certainly was a little disappointed at all the attention that person got ;)

@Magisch I think that would be epic, and if someone did that, they probably just hate us all

11:05 AM
@Tinkeringbell I'm filing that under "you cry into the forest, don't be surprised when the forest cries back" :p

@Magisch we're supposed to be 'the better people' here, for lack of better words.

@JourneymanGeek if that happened I would fully expect moderators quitting

SE certainly didn't help by elevating the twitter post from "random complainer #19992318822 this tuesday" to "more effective and taken more seriously then many years of meta voting and discussion"

You can't really get outraged at someone's actions and then lower yourself to that level too, that's just not going to make your point.

@Tinkeringbell I mean I have yet to hear about any actual harassment
just a bunch of people arguing, which, yeah, that's normal

11:07 AM
*makes sea lion sounds*

I have never DMed anyone on twitter but I might just change my profile pic to a sea lion for lols

@Magisch 'any actual harassment' is a far cry from what I meant by 'not give it attention, don't lower yourself to that level'. I think it would be great if mods could have some rules on using Twitter too.

thanks, guys people for bringing my attention to Monica's post and the staff's response. Eeep

and for all that matters, if behaving badly on Twitter could carry over to your SE account :P

Just wondering... Serious question here. How many users in this rooms actually remember the kind of questions Anime used to be full of in its old days?

11:10 AM
@Tinkeringbell I'll echo what I said in TL. If someone starts bashing the community that you've helped build without good reason, and the people who should have defended it are throwing you under the bus, then it's entirely normal to want to step in and defend it yourself.

@ArtOfCode It's normal to want to ;) It's also (in my experience) normal to have some guidance from the company that says 'don't do exactly that'.

@Tinkeringbell I disagree. Arguing is not lowering yourself to that level
now if you started blindly flinging insults like the user that sparked this whole discussion, yeah, no.

@Tinkeringbell but... we don't have that, and actually moderators are the people who do community outreach and external engagement for SE sites, because SE doesn't

I thought we chose mods exactly because they seem like the people who can represent and in a way guide the community. Mods are the least likely to go on harrassing users in twitter, and I don't think that's ever happened.

so I'm not at all surprised it happened and I'm certainly not feeling like anyone did anything wrong there

11:12 AM
I can only see put-downs and toxic behaviour from the "other" side (so to speak, by which I just mean the offended twitter user and the "SRE") in this event

the mods on IPS were appointed, but still. They're doing their best

@ArtOfCode Well, may just be me then. I wouldn't have graced that retweet, original tweet, or Adams reaction with any reaction outside of SE, because that's how I was taught to behave.

@Tinkeringbell I wouldn't have done so if SE hadn't - I think that's the crucial difference

real talk though, if an employee goes around sayin stuff like this: twitter.com/shanemadden/status/1052912705592471552

exactly ^

11:14 AM
that's just blatant contempt of the userbase

oh, nice.
there was also a free "censored insults" emoji enclosed with the sea lions package.

I'd add that the original blog post of welcomingness started down this path, but I know this is a much more controversial opinion

didn't notice that

anyone who has reservations about the new direction is apparently part of a vocal, resistant and obnoxious minority
how about that

well bad people are obnoxious, and who makes people offended are bad people, so I'm not sure what your issue is

11:16 AM
trying to remain within the unconditional assumption of good faith that's like trying to wash something but using dirt instead of soap

Honestly, I could've jumped up, told her to buzz off, said all the things I'd have loved to say while feeling hurt... it wouldn't have made a single difference. I can't access the codebase and revert changes... I can only be mad that someone decided to pull IPS out of HNQ instead of editing titles, instead of telling the community that there were complaints and we need to mind our titles.

In a sense, Kelly wasn't wrong in her observation. She was wrong in the medium she picked to convey it (at least to me, she was) and the words she used to do so (as if she were speaking for all people, in

@Magisch This perfectly fits in good faith. Just a chaotic neutral kind of good faith towards someone being offended on twitter, rather than assuming good faith toward everyone involved

@AndrasDeak No I mean fitting into the fact that I'm supposed to assume unconditional good faith on the part of SE employees

I'm sure the SRE believed they were doing The Right Thing stepping up against Yet Another Instance of Oppression

which I've just decided to do for this
@Tinkeringbell a normal discussion about the appropriateness of these titles would have ended very differently

11:19 AM
I think this has more to do with the global atmosphere of "guilty unless proven innocent" which seems very prevalent these days. Horrible people being accused of horrible things, and every once in a while innocent people being accused of horrible things, and in the end the lives of both kinds of people are in ruins

probably in a "sure, why not, if it makes people more comfortable" followed by editing the titles

How about this: If somebody uses the word "mansplaining", we assume they don't want to be explained anything, we won't provide any explanation - and we act as if we had and they agreed with us

I mean the word has its uses
but not these

@Magisch yeah, but not as defense in an argument

What is a valid use?

11:21 AM
it's an existing phenomenon from certain kinds of actual mysogynists, so talking about that makes sense

the original legitimate use was borne from the need to point out that sometimes perspective differences are important for the outcome of a discussion in a snappy way

@Magisch Yes... so would everyone just staying away from that thread after we found out about it ;)

my question is still up for take, if anyone is willing to.

@JohnDvorak it's in a way hilarious how some of the people fighting against bias and oppression tend to use the worst toxic language

Now, damage is done, we can only try to make it better now.

11:21 AM
It's ... unconstructive, sure. Properly explained would be "your perspective colors the way you look at this in a way that impacts your conclusion unduely" but that's long winded

fortunately most people aren't like this, but the worst of the worst are always the most vocal and most visible

What are most feminists like?

eh, let's not go there
the word "feminist" alone has so much baggage that it's impossible to have a constructive discussion around it
there's no two people who mean the same thing by "feminism" let alone "feminist" so I'd rather stick with facts rather than terminology

oh, ok
thanks

@JohnDvorak AMA, I am one

11:27 AM
@Magisch you're not even like "most people" :P

I'll take that as a compliment

I'd like to know how IPS fares atm, because it sure sounds like we're about to be closed

@AndrasDeak oh, don't worry. The last image I posted wasn't about the question I made ^_^. This one was about the current situation and the "IPS scandal"

Remember, that thing is just there to do some damage control.
