Anyone around?

2:39 AM
Yes...

Can you check something to see if you reproduce it?

On the main MSE page, can you click on the "answered 5 hours ago" text here and tell me what happens:

direct link to meta.stackexchange.com/questions/312850/… , but nothing happened since the answer was deleted?

Answer isn't deleted. It's on the second page, score of -1

2:42 AM
looks like a bug

Yeah... but I don't know how to document it... as soon as someone does something to that post, it will presumably go away.
I've got a gif of the behavior but... not sure what else would be useful.
Even if it were deleted, the link text would read "modified" instead of "answered".

Yeah, I just remember that deleted post would show "modified" instead
Maybe this bug happens on answer not on 1st page? I'd try to reproduce on Sandbox

Hmmm... maybe.

erh, sandbox only has 25 answers... hmm...

Found one.
meta.stackexchange.com/questions?page=2&sort=active "What are the hidden features of SE" Answered two days ago by rene.

^ I've deleted the answer for science...

Also seems to applies to "modified"..... so it likely is based on whether the modified/added post is on a page other than the first.

Looks like a solid bug report now, with more than 1 evidences, and steps to repro
gotta go

Thanks!

@Catija No matter whether it's "answered" or "modified", clicking that text will go to the question plus ?lastactivity, so the bug is probably about that. (cc @SomewhatMemorableName)

Hey

3:05 AM
Are you still up or just up, @Magisch ?

still

... but... isn't it like... 4 or 5 am?

it is

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I think that's what I'm saying?

I'm about to go to bed though

3:08 AM
It's not about what the activity is, it's about it happening somewhere other than the first page.
@Magisch Sleep well! :D

@Catija night to you

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog are you sure? Is the hot questions formula used for the home page the same as used for the HNQ list? I always thought and was told they were different with the latter being a trade secret.

@rene The target I selected is for HNQ. The formula for the "hot" tab of a site is in a separate question.

I'm not convinced but I don't have time to do research to support my point, so I'll refrain from casting a vote now. It doesn't risk to get useless/wrong answers so I assume time is not an issue here.

Hi

12:27 PM
@SmokeDetector New kind of band promotion?
@SmokeDetector k

12:53 PM
@Shog9 Do we have a good threshold for spamming accounts according to reputation? I would dare a guess that most have simply 1, but I do not know if they climb up to higher levels (20?50?100?).
I would also be interested if we have some kind of magical reputation barrier; I think we have many "one-time" askers who simply throw in a question and leave SE afterwards. Is there an amount of reputation where from experience you can say "It is very likely that the person stays."?

@ThorstenS. practically - most spammers don't play the long game.
and there's kind of a limit for rep for spam nukage but unless they're also playing the reputation fraud game they're not gonna get very far

1:12 PM
@ThorstenS. I don't think rep is the factor, but it's more about "unregistered" first, since if they lose their cookies, then... bye-bye account.
for "need to register" sites, still there's no correlation of rep (yes, I blame HNQ)
otherwise, I believe it's possible to use SEDE to query 1-time asker and their rep

1:29 PM
There's also two considerations... are you talking about pure spammers with no intention to participate or inadvertent spammers who get really excited about their blog or a new repository they created... very different situations.
The former is unlikely to have any rep, the latter, often likely.

Yeah, the latter is what somewhat we call as "innocent user", which is... hard to judge and have to assume good faith in most cases.

I dont count the latter as spammer personally
And i usually dont cast red flags on such posts. A mod flag + comment often suffices

Ahh ya

Stack exchange's rules on self promotion are kind of extreme in the larger context so it's plausible some people dont read that tidbit before posting

@ThorstenS. In many cases we end up mod messaging and suspension over deletion. Its less reputation than whether we think there's a real person behind the account

1:44 PM
I guess my "latter" is a bit different in that a random user shares someone's library/app that fixes their problem, thus very unclear affiliation. We usually posted a comment to disclose/disclaim, but more often then not, they didn't fix it, and we already forgot about that answer...
and thus, "innocent user" or "happy user of the library/app"

I'm also generally more forgiving with self promotions when the promoted thing is free/open source
It speaks to the intent behind the promotion imo

There are so many free but questionable Android apps though...

@SomewhatMemorableName - oh those can be fine if its a unique answer talking about using it in context IMO

any meta gurus in here?

user310756
can you have a duplicate of the faq?

A duplicate? Huh? (not a guru, but curious now :) )

won't it be closed... as a duplicate of that faq?

5:02 PM
@YvetteColomb Depends if FAQ is formed from Q&A posts or help articles.

1 hour later…
6:10 PM
@Shadow @rene Please change the duplicate target of meta.stackexchange.com/questions/115317/… to meta.stackexchange.com/questions/60756/…. The former question and my proposed target talk about HNQ, while the current target talks about the "hot" tab on a site.

6:42 PM
@YvetteColomb Yes. Would it make sense? No. Will it be confusing when it happened? Maybe. Will their be Meta uproar when they find out? Definitely.

7:00 PM
I have now read this answer several times but I doubt it answers the question, I even doubt if it answers a question. It reads more as a lead-in for an more extensive FR. Am I missing something?

@rene it's not only you. I failed to see the relevancy to the FR: fix the "advanced search" help vs. implement regex-style search...

OK. glad I'm not alone ...

@Catija Do you know if users with the staff bit are allowed by the GUI to migrate questions that are more than 60 days old, or do employees have to manage such migrations by manually tweaking the database?
@Shog9 Can you please investigate this?

10:44 PM
@TimStone, Thanks for placing those Stack Apps posts on hold. Can you get this one too?

pew pew

Thanks!

@TimStone Should Brock Adams become a Stack Apps mod too? He's pretty active there and mods there are manually appointed.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog, Stack Apps does need another mod, but Tim handles everything but close votes and suggested edits fairly well. (and there are only 2 3K users reviewing) On the other hand, it doesn't look like Nathan Osman has done any moderating there for years.

10:59 PM
@AwesomePoodles SE has an unofficial policy of removing the moderator status of inactive moderators, so maybe it's time to remove Nathan's status and reassign it to Brock?

Works for me.

11:13 PM
@TimStone, Thanks for approving everybody's edits. But you missed a couple from April (here and here) And it looks like those 2 would kick you over the badge threshold . (^_^)

Two more days until the tenth anniversary of Stack Exchange

11:45 PM
@YvetteColomb that's a bit of a religious war :p
I think getting the folks with problems helped is a priority to the point where I avoid dupehammering stuff as long as possible
But if it is clearly a duplicate the usual rules are in play
