How early is early June?

Depends on who you ask... 30 days would imply the first 10 or so if you divide the month into early, mid, and late.

@ArtOfCode How does Smokey deal with username changes? If I change my username, will pings like the one above also change?

I think it chooses user ID

it's based on user ID. I requested to be notified when I was @hey, and I still get it with current username without me doing anything.

6:40 AM
@NogShine yup otherwise it's trivial to cheat
@NogShine if you mean SE features to be done, 30th in June would still be really early.
July can also be considered as early June for that matter.

6:57 AM
Early means ±6-8 weeks from the first day of the month

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog some will, some won't. For them all to change you'll need to change it in MS too

8:51 AM
aaaaand after the last comment, I think this fall in the "worthy ping" category.
@JNat can you spare a nuke for this post and the following comments chain?
@Oded @Taryn @JonEricson ^ whoever comes first. I suspect it may even deserve some free "let this never happen again" friendly warnings.

@Derpy umm.... Oded can do what we can do, nothing more. He has no diamond.
Also, no need to panic and call all SE staff here just due to one crappy answer, @Derpy.
It's not even offensive on its own, just attracting crappy comments.

Tomayto, tomahto. You call it not offensive, I call it "burn with fire".
Also, this

what offensive about it? That he writes "male" and "female"??
Crappy? Sure. Offensive? No. But anyone has the full right to be offended by anything, so it's all good, I guess.
(I'm pretty sure that if downvote threshold was 100 or less, that answer was at -100 now, not just -10)

It invited the last comment having something to do with ... "happy"

@Derpy what about it? Yet another crappy comment in a pool of crappy comments under crappy answer.

9:06 AM
I just mod flagged the answer for comment cleanup. Still not sure about answer deletion (it's up to the mods)

Hopefully the answer will get deleted, e.g. via review, but no need for panic IMO.

!!/panic

@Mithrandir No such command 'panic'.

!!/blame panic

@ShadowWizard It's Taryn's fault.

9:09 AM
So she is behind all of this...
Knew it!

sorry, not a fan of content that generates "boys be boys" style comments, gender based jokes and the such.

!!/panic-dance

@Derpy of course, me neither, but we can just flag and go away, no need to call all the guns, that's my point. :)

and as for the "not offensive" last comment I linked... I suppose we have very different standard.

status-error-no-panic-detected

9:12 AM
@ShadowWizard I was calling the guns precisely because I think some of those nice comments - especially the final one - deserve a free be nice reminder coupon to be handled out by some staff member. Simple deletion would probably pass up unnoticed.

@Derpy such warning can also be issued by a site mod, if they find it so offensive as you do.
(and the answer got many flags, that's for sure)

9:26 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog no, the other one is marked as completed, so not a good idea to close new request as dupe of it.
If there was a regression and whatever was completed is no longer in place, the wrong tag should first be removed, then we can close fresh requests as dupe of it.

@ShadowWizard and it is still there, attracting more "not offensive at all" comments.

@ShadowWizard There are also many queries that filter and group by this. I opted to not silently break these. Since SEDE is also the source of the data dump, we also don't want a forever null column propagating there. There's also having to explain "well...it's there but..." every so often. Given that users are able to fix the queries on their own, I'm okay with this decision. — Nick Craver ♦ 40 mins ago

@Bart You seem sad. Shall I prescribe the 10 hours version of the Smile song?

@ShadowWizard he was very popular for a while, but then got to a point where he like himself so much and could not quit being on TV ... so he moved to a religious channel and what not. Would not be surprised if he still tries to pop up here and there.
@Derpy I am going to guess that "no" is probably in my best interest as a response :D

@Bart there is worse.

and... are kinda making a hash of it.
or not doing anything at all

@JourneymanGeek right, that's what I meant. Parents offering matches, i.e. dates

ANd some reasonable news would be nice ;p
the last girl they tried to match me with with any level of seriousness is kinda uninterested in getting married (to anyone) and was kinda cute.

@JourneymanGeek so they did try.... it means they stopped at some point?

3:20 PM
but eh, they don't seem very good at farming it out to aunts or doing it themselves
@ShadowWizard bit half hearted

hmm...
when was that last girl thing?

eh, 2-3 months ago when they asked

Oh, that's recent.

Mom's like "Oh don't worry, we'll get you married off by august"
lol

But if she's cute, why not let it continue, hoping she will rethink marriage with time?

Oh, I've met her like, once

And it's.. over?

and probably wouldn't really talk to her unless it was a maybe

If door wasn't shut guess you can still go for it, no?

lol
Well, ball's in her court I guess?
ANd you don't always get your first choice, jobs or girls sometimes ;p

@JourneymanGeek no idea, if the date ended with "OK, we'll talk again", then it's in your court as much as in hers. :)

3:23 PM
oh no date

Meeting with someone for romantic purpose is a date. ;)

more my parents asked her parents... and erm... she apparently kinda wasn't interested at all, and lied to her parents about having a profile on the match making site.
Oh!
Dosen't work like that at all
Its all very victorian

Unless you didn't even meet her, in this case how you know she's cute? @Journeyman

anyway, got another 12 hour day tommorrow, so to bed with me.

4:26 PM
Well... if each repo now has their Q&A in addition to Issue and Wiki... I guess that's understandable?

Anonymous
If it's just referring to their existing private teams discussions, that's not very interesting. But Issues currently exists as an awkward hybrid of bug/issue tracking, user support, sometimes references, etc. A distinct Q&A category/feature for major projects might be a good incremental development.

Yeah, a Q&A section would be a good way to ask if something was working as intended or whether it was a good idea to implement a new feature or... something...

Anonymous
But if it's tightly scoped within a project like that, I'd imagine it only really succeeding for large projects, not catching as much long tail as Stack. And I don't really see GitHub implementing a site-wide reputation/permission system.

I guess it still has a better potential than off-loading the support (sometimes wrongly) to SO...

I barely use GH as it is, so I'm not sure I have the best ability to judge. I do know that there are some issues with notifications, particularly relating to Gists that are troublesome... mostly relating to... well, notifications for Gists don't exist. :P

GitHub's project/code views are fine, but I feel like the rest of the site could do with a bit of a redesign. The home page feed is pretty dully and rarely useful to me (maybe not representative). Rejig that, throw in some questions, maybe you've got something interesting going.

Anonymous
Yeah, Gist is kind-of off in its own corner, not getting a lot of attention.

And it's really difficult/non-obvious how to actually get around on the site at all.

Definitely agree.

7:01 PM
@user134300 what about it? Looks like I miss something obvious...

7:35 PM
@Catija @user134300 I am not that concerned (yet):
Let's see which impact #Microsoft 's purchase of #GitHub will have for the #opensource / FOSS community in the end. If the open source contributors will feel throttled, or vendor locked in, they'll find other places anyway. Git itself is still open source stuff.

@πάνταῥεῖ The amount of FUD going on here is insane

I was just telling my husband at lunch today that all of the people leaving GH for GL didn't make sense to me. If they want to use GH, they're better off staying where they are for the time being and giving MS a chance to show their cards. and if it gets bad, make a stink when it's actually useful. The sale is happening/happened...
so moving isn't going to undo it... but if they do something really crappy in the future that breaks GH... there are now fewer people around to complain and effect change.

I donno. Folks should do what makes them comfortable. GitHub is nice, but if you're not using all the bells and whistles it isn't a big deal to move somewhere else.

@Mgetz Yes. Just most of the current users aren't M$ fanboys and gals :-P

@πάνταῥεῖ The fact that people are still using M$ is kinda sad. I understood it with ballmer but Nadya isn't the same

7:41 PM
@Shog9 Exactly what I mentioned. The Git core software is still open source, and I doubt that linus will be eager to change the licenses.
@Mgetz The fact people are using it is simply a fact. And my company has to deal with that somehow. We can't force all of our customers to change.

@πάνταῥεῖ true, but at the end of the day they are missing out on some great products and getting themselves burned by others because they are unwilling to look past actions of people that aren't even at the company anymore

"look past actions of people that aren't even at the company anymore" My daily bread and butter :-P

There's probably some part of it I'm missing, then... If you're on one site by default rather than choice, I can understand moving but if there's actually something about GitHub that you like over the others, it'd make more sense to wait it out a bit.

I am trusting Nat Friedman so far. He's looking friendly and well-educated.

@πάνταῥεῖ If your customers are still angry at Microsoft they're probably so old that you can wait a few years and they'll all be dead.

Anonymous

@ShadowWizard Did you miss the freehand red circle?

@user134300 You probably misunderstood something. Our (~17000) customers use all kind of Microsoft Windows OS versions, and we wan't to keep them still going with our products as much as possible.

8:09 PM
@Mgetz Ah sorry, I misunderstood. You meant the M$ shortcut. Sorry I am simply still used with it. My stances changed a bit meanwhile :3

@πάνταῥεῖ If you're still supporting windows XP you have my condolences

We'll cancel it at our October release (throwing off Windows Server 2012 OS)

@πάνταῥεῖ That corresponds to win 7 IIRC. So you're not supporting Vista but you are supporting XP...

I still have fun with the rest of "The API Zoo" ;)

eh... I think MS needs to be a bit more proactive with [[deprecated]] on their API

8:14 PM
@Mgetz We have to distinguish about Server and Desktop installations, Vista was thrown out earlier as far I am informed.

@πάνταῥεῖ Personally I would have taken the attitude MS took on XP. You can pay for extra support, but I'd also require you show us the signed support agreement and migration play with MS.

@Mgetz Wouldn't help much with a customer still running old Microsoft software.
@Mgetz Sure we're paying for support of "special cases". Depends on the customers volume.
Also support of OS isn't the worst thing to deal regarding our product.

8:43 PM
stackoverflow.com/q/36034454/1709587 is a great case study of a kind of arrogant treatment of askers that's bugged me for a while. I ask what is, I think, a reasonable and thoughtful question, and get two terrible answers that are barely relevant. One answerer throws a tantrum, insults me, and finally deletes his answer when I point out that it doesn't answer the question. Eventually, years later, somebody provides a good answer demonstrating that both previously answerers were wrong.
I feel like this is a narrative that's missing from a lot of Meta discussions, where it's often tacitly assumed that askers are selfish idiots and all the value on the site comes from answerers

without askers, there wouldn't be answerers

in The Reading Room on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, Feb 21 '17 at 22:00, by Rand al'Thor
in Mos Eisley, Jun 26 '15 at 23:35, by rand al'thor
Questions get less rep than answers,
But rep-whores are just foolish prancers.
The pride a well-posed question brings
Is greater than rep or other things.
Answers need their nourishing questions:
Naught else can suit their select digestions.
Those vital questions, food for all,
Cannot be overlooked. Askers stand tall!

@KevinB Yep, I agree. But if you were to uncritically read some of the Meta threads that happen, you could walk away feeling that askers were all selfish, entitled scum, demanding the time of answerers that they have no right to.

Unfortunately there actually are things like "stupid" and unhelpful questions. That's what I learned over the years.

@πάνταῥεῖ Sure, I absolutely agree with that too
The trouble is that even asking thoughtful, helpful questions frequently draws hostility

8:48 PM
I don't think anyone disagrees with that... what isn't necessary is calling them "stupid" to the users' faces.

@user134300 nope. So it means GH is now competitor of SO?

eh, i think that's falling into the same trap as those complaining about people with high rep being unwelcoming. it isn't an absolute, it's instead complaining about the majority.
not the all

@Catija Of course, we have to tell them that in a nice way, or better not at all.
@ShadowWizard HUH??

@Catija Sure, there's that too, I guess. But I'm honestly not too fussed if genuinely stupid questions get called stupid. I could tolerate incivility if it worked as form of quality control. What bugs me is that the hostility is frequently unrelated to the quality of an asker's contributions.

There's not a site out there...no one to hear my questions...gimme gimme gimme an answer after midnight

8:51 PM
Here's the thing... the person asking the question... doesn't think it's stupid... at least not initially... one of my friends and I, in high school, had our minds blank at one point in French class and we couldn't figure out how to say "the" in French... which... if you've got any French... is an extremely stupid question... but plastering that in our faces and making us feel bad for it... doesn't help anyone.

meta.stackoverflow.com/q/367922/1709587 was another good example. I waded in and answered there because I was upset to see a perfectly reasonable, useful question downvoted and closed for no good reason. And then the asker's Meta question got flooded with downvotes too?!

@πάνταῥεῖ Q+A icon in Github... sorry, but I really don't see what it might mean. Not using Github myself.

GitHub provides statistics for repos popularity already. No need for voting. It's a special art to select from code to safely and sightfully copy to your production stuff though.

Do note that this acquisition comes after a failed attempt at establishing a competitor: CodePlex

@Catija There's a difference between getting in someone's face because they forget something silly, and getting in their face because they choose to ask something silly on Stack Exchange.

8:54 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog codeplex existed prior, I would say codeplex competed with sourceforge not github

Anonymous
@ShadowWizard We don't know what it means. Just wildly speculating.

Not really. There's no excuse to "get in their face"... pretty much ever.

@ShadowWizard There are a lot of jokes that SE will be MS' next acquisition

I'm not sure they're jokes.

Not to mention that sourceforge is an almost dead end meanwhile.

@Catija Meh. I think I probably mostly stay on the right side of civility as most people would judge it... but honestly, if people wanna make useless contributions, I don't really care if they get treated disrespectfully.

I like Git as a user, but it's a shame that it won in open-source, when it's a hard-to-extend pile of C, leaving Mercurial to out-compete it in corporate environments that need more flexibility from its extensible Python model. I wish we could have the same in both....

@πάνταῥεῖ unfortunately yes

Anonymous
(IIRC both Facebook and Google have custom extensions to Mercurial to integrate with their monorepos, though Microsoft has been doing a lot of heavy lifting to get Git to play nice with theirs, lately.)

9:02 PM
@Catija Well, sure. I'm not sure we concretely disagree on anything, we just have very different focuses.
You're annoyed by gratuitous incivility even when it's towards people who are genuinely making crap contributions

Eclipse in the past didn't have good Git support, and sort of stuck on to older systems such as SVN and CVS. Also, Google had better integration, with a plugin that allowed one to easily import their code hosted on their service into Eclipse. It's for these reasons that I used their service.

Whereas I'm primarily annoyed that the incivility isn't well-targeted; that even if you're posting thoughtful, intelligent things, you still have good reason to fear how you'll be received.

Thankfully as Google's service was being shut down, someone finally made a better Git client for Eclipse

@Taryn As mentioned I'm having fun with importing CSV to PostgreSQL currently. If you need any tips, I am at your service ;-)

Q: Experiment request: Temporarily stop showing characteristics about a user in the question preview to certain users

gparyaniJudging from my overall experience on Stack Overflow and what I've seen happening with others, it might be that users' votes are confounded based on the reputation of the post author, or based on whether or not they are a new user. However, this is unproven. To help (dis)prove this, I have a pro...

@KevinB so you're a robot?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I've previously +1ed. But, anecdotally, I still receive condescension sometimes when I ask questions today, as a ~50k rep user.

@Taryn What do you think about my experiment proposal above?

damnit, my botnet must be misbehaving: he isn't supposed to talk.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I haven't read it yet

@Taryn Take a look at it

lol

@MarkAmery In my book there's a huge gulf between users who are clueless and users who are actively harming the site by continuously posting poor content. The former, given some effort, may be great contributors eventually. The latter, particularly those who don't care that they're breaking the site, are unlikely to... I'll certainly be somewhat brusque (for me) with the latter but I prefer to give the former a chance.

One wise cite from my step daughter: "You cannot expect anyone to receive you as a nice person as I do, with a 140 characters stance".

@Maroun has already explained. Enabling such a 'feature' would just blow up the current 'cool trend' of hammering skilled/experienced SO user-moderators as hostile bullies, Lets face it - if that set of users was unionized, they would have downed logins and gone on strike long ago:( — Martin James Apr 22 at 8:16

@Catija How do you tell the difference? Either way, you'll be losing blood volume quickly:(

(referring to the feature proposal to enable low-rep users to ask about one's own posts on MSO)

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I believe I brought that up earlier, and there's a grain of salt to take about. It makes a (strongly felt) difference for high-rep users, yes.

@Mgetz nah... they're smart enough to see the obvious: once such thing happens, SE dies as most if not all "hardcore" users leave.

@MartinJames On a site the size of SO, it's difficult, sure... but there are tons of people there to help. If you don't think you can be kind, use the system as you see fit (downvote, flag, close vote, etc...) and leave the commenting to someone else. The secret to being too tired to be nice... is to take a break.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Here it is:

Q: Is there a kind of "exponential upvoting effect" for high rep users?

πάντα ῥεῖI have noticed my reputation points growing started to boost at some point when I had already received a few +1k rep, at least when it was +10k. On the one hand, you're going to learn how to give better answers over the time, on the other hand I sometimes even receive unsolicited upvotes (where ...

@ShadowWizard you say that as if it's not already happening

@Mgetz well, I don't leave, so it's not "all". ;)
Dunno what happens in SO/MSO though.

@ShadowWizard lol. 'peace' and 'rene' in the same meme...

:P
Well, @rene is peaceful! :D

@Catija Being nice is all very well in theory, and works fine in a social and work setting. On SO, being unconditionally nice, always assuming good intentions, and you will just get continually mugged, over and over, every day, by users who don't give a toss about anything, or anybody, except getting their answer.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog From my experience now my suspension at SO didn't have much effect at the constantly incoming upvotes for my posts. I'd suspect being shown as 1 rep user (or without any attributions at all), doesn't really have any measurable overall effect.

@MartinJames "Unconditionally" wasn't part of my argument here. If you open with an honest attempt to help and improve a post and you're greeted with vitriol... back away and flag. Disengage and find someone else to help. But greeting someone who's got 1 rep and no questions on the site with rudeness... is pre-judging them and unfair. Yes, users may respond rudely to your attempts to be helpful but many often appreciate the guidance and want to improve. Even if they're uncommon, they deserve help.

@MartinJames You can't tell them you're a nice person within such narrow context. That's what I mentioned before.

@πάνταῥεῖ I think it affects only new answers, not old.

i mean, it's easy; just don't comment, and if you do, don't get offended by the response.

A lot of this will be helped by having better stuff in place (as Jay rightfully suggests in that Welcoming blog post) to help users ask better questions from the start. This removes the burden from the avid users and makes it more likely that question quality will improve.

@ShadowWizard Arguable.

@πάνταῥεῖ it was tested several times, too lazy to find sources. (high rep users posting exact same answer as 1 rep sock, getting much less upvotes than when posting it with their main account.)

But currently I am not able to answer.

I would suspect the score of your post has more to do with it's continued upvotes than your rep does

I was able to achieve same levels with a sock account quite quickly though.

Every OT MSE question needs a here really?
