Welcome back @Jeremy
Wikipedia articles are improved through the hard work of both regular editors and newcomers. Remember: all of us were new editors at Wikipedia once, and in some ways (such as when editing an article on a topic outside our usual scope) even the most experienced among us are still newcomers. New members are prospective contributors and are therefore Wikipedia's most valuable resource. We must treat newcomers with kindness and patience—nothing scares potentially valuable contributors away faster than hostility. It is very unlikely for a newcomer to be completely familiar with Wikipedia's markup language...

@SonicWizard Turns out mod powers can be used to modify your own name network-wide despite the cooldown. :)
That's what I thought... you just had to change it on SO, right?
@JeremyBanks Not useful if you want to use a different name on one site vs. all other sites
Anonymous
@Catija yeah. I didn’t realize that would still apply to cooldowned sites, but gave it a shot.
@SonicWizard It's fine as long as you have mod powers on the sites you want to have different usernames on... Like Rory does. :D
I can't get mod powers here on MSE without becoming employed at Stack Exchange...so it's still not helpful
@Catija By the way, I forgot to ask: how did Bennett like the airport's viewing area?
02:22
@SonicWizard Fine, I guess? He doesn't talk about things yet, so I've no idea if he liked it or even remembers it.
By the way, in case you wanted to start a flight log for Bennett...I'd be happy to send you (or anyone) the templates I use for my log
02:37
@SonicWizard I donno. Mod powers on SE arn't that different from a 30ker
least other than flags
and that's achievable
@JourneymanGeek Wait, what are you talking about?
sorry - fixed the reply. I've not really had enough sleep this week.
That was in reference to early username changes...pretty sure you need to have mod privileges to do that.
"early"?
Oh, sub 30 days?

@SonicWizard Turns out mod powers can be used to modify your own name network-wide despite the cooldown. :)
02:40
ah yeah, that.
@JourneymanGeek Me neither... when I thought I could rest my eyes at 10pm, turned out I was awaken until 1am...
I've literally changed my nickname only twice in all the time I've been there
lol
been working nights 4 days this week, and will be doing a fifth
@JourneymanGeek Last month I used to sleep in the late afternoon, and get up at 10-midnight, and then stay awake the night, attend morning classes, then repeat
And I asked myself: "Was I that old?" because I heard that older people don't need longer sleep (dubious?).
02:45
Just curious, how many responses have it gotten? Because I'm not sure everyone wants to participate on the survey if they don't care about Smokey in the first place.
8 responses
It's split: two say to turn off self-deletion, while the others are evenly split between keeping self-deletion turned on and delaying self-deletion until the very end of the self-deletion period
So I need more responses to get a more clear-cut view
According to the room's info, there are 9 frequent users (excluding Smokey). I think that's nearly enough.
@HTTPS What are the criteria for listing there?
@SmokeDetector tpu- (errorsolutions.tech)
... whatever they are, I apparently don't qualify... :sniff, sniff:
Well, neither do I, and that's why I was asking what the criteria are...
03:07
That's a good question for meta post.
I wonder if it's aggregate chattiness but I've not been active here long
03:29

A: How is Chat's "frequently in room" sorted?

in short: be noisy ._.
(but WP:BEANS, don't be artificially noisy)
@SonicWizard This answer is outdated. Can you update it?

> whose messages in the room are more than one percent of all messages here
user315433
So if 150 people are equally active, then nobody is active.
05:15
@Catija watermelon juice... I think. :)
No worry, only temporary until I decide on something more permanent... maybe just back to what I had before.
But since it's starting to get hot these days, wanted something cool and refreshing. :D

What do the CM team do with the FR's proposed on per site metas which should be discussed on main meta?
@NogShine Umm, if it's okay for you, could you summarize how the mods (in general, without mentioning username) behave there?
@HTTPS Sorry. I feel it is not good to talk about other site mods here. If they are present here, then we can talk.
@NogShine well understood, sorry for asking too.
09:41
@HTTPS doesn't seem very related...
btw....
@ShadowWizard does this at all reminds you of something?
> As human beings with inevitable insecurities, we may signal our superiority to others through condescension. If I can convince myself that enough people are mediocre 80%-ers, then I’ll feel more confident that I’m definitely in that elite top 20%.
(this is taken from April article by the way)
If else, it reminds me of... me. Happened often when I learnt a new skill and wanted to show off use it. (e.g. answering Japanese language questions on Anime.SE)

if you want, follow the link to learn about the context that statement was made in
Yup, we have to find our inner self
(I'm probably talking a bit nonsense because TGIF...)
10:31
@HTTPS "A bit". I will be honest - I do not understand your reply.
probably my fault too, that message alone isn't enough to understand the context.
11:06
@NogShine in theory just treat them the same. In practice, I have no idea which tags get followed up on.
11:25
@JourneymanGeek If theory is same as practice, per site meta also request for notifying for a close vote, notifying for deletion. If they are approved, isn't that a bias for a site and not for other sites?
@NogShine i don't qyuite get
you mean like, that means one site can do a FR and no one ever sees it?
@JourneymanGeek e.g A site requests for notification in the inbox for a close vote. It gets very good number of upvotes. CM approves that request. So, it means only that site will get that feature which need change in default SE features. Other sites won't get this.
ah
that's unlikely to happen?
1) needs a dev. 2) chances are that other sites learn over the grapevine and ask.
also, something like that is a change in core mechanics and is unlikely
3)any changes go on that main meta post that @animuson administers
I didn't get point 3)
11:41
@NogShine if its something that can be switched on per site, there's a mechanism for mods to learn and ask about it
assuming the mods are active on the main meta
also quietly twitter stalking a few key people is helpful
I learn a lot of what's happening/will happen from following shog and nick ;p
I follow Shog but I don't stalk him completely.
well I treat twitter as a second news stream for SE
What was that phrase.... Sometimes we are told what we require and no more. Its useful for learning things before we're told what what we require and no more ;p
12:16
@JourneymanGeek It is not what you "need". It is all about minimizing awareness so that impacted users will cry less. Same reason all positive rep gains are notified to you, but some of the rep drops are silent unless you notice and know where to look. :P
@Derpy which is why its useful to get information before - I learn about some things weeks before official announcements
I just arrived at home. I think I'm more sober now...

1 hour later…
13:36
@Derpy not really... Should it?
14:06
@ShadowWizard reply is a little below that message. The bold part in the passage I took from April article is very close to my old "If you can't be happy, at least try to make others more unhappy than you" statement
@PrincessLuna adventu solis occultantur stellae
@PrincessLuna It is Latin for "When the sun comes, the stars hide".
Just remember: When the stars come, the sun hides :3
Which roughly translates to "It is day now, you should be sleeping"

@rene link . . . I'm too lazy
@bro bitter
the CSS bug on chat tob par has come to me...
@HTTPS what did he bring?
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ lazy
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ From Cozy/Confortable to Compact
@rene Unfortunately no boats to rent there yet. But the weather was fantastic, and of course she took a bath in the lake (her 1st lakey swim out this year). I believe she would even take a bath in ice water :-D.
17:43
@πάνταῥεῖ as long as she doesn't take a dive when it is solid frozen ... ;)
There's still snow at all the mountains (even lower ones) surrounding
@rene unicorns can easily do that
You have to ask @πάνταῥεῖ if his daughter is a unicorn. Don't be surprised if anyone gets offended in that process ...
^That ಠ_ಠ
@rene huh, I confused her with Yvette the horse keeper
This is not awkward

Q: Help users transform images with math to TeX formulas (there is free software for this)

TimOn sites like CrossValidated (but I guess this applies also to the math sites etc.) we often have users who post math formulas as pictures, rather then using TeX formatting that is supported by the platform. Some of the users are unfamiliar with TeX, some just lazy, yet it would be nicer to have ...

17:52
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ That's utterly awkward
Humble request: Can people with insufficient knowledge of math sites etc. moderation refrain from voting up there or retract their downvote?
This feature would be very useful
@πάνταῥεῖ </sarcasm>
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ So now you offended also @YvetteColomb ... I would hide ...
Well, FRs are FRs and received as usual.
I remembered there was a meta question on science.SE (forgot if Math or Physics) asking to implement tools to assist in writing TeX too.
and now I'm missing it...
@πάνταῥεῖ but the majority of the users here don't know much about sites using TeX
17:55
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I'm a trained down voter, trust me ...
@rene I think it would be an honor for her to keep unicorns too
If so one needs to ask an FR to all these math related site meta's individually. I don't see that should be done network wide.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ that is true
Male unicorn? Female pegasus?
@πάνταῥεῖ that is like, 8 sites :/
Stuff concerning 3 or more sites can and should be asked here
I will ask one question on our own meta most probably
Anyway, unrelated meta post: "In my feed I got this "user was removed" and - 5 reputation. What does it mean? Am I having any kind of trouble with this? → checking OP's profile → This account is temporarily suspended for voting irregularities
What are the chances that the 8 downvoters came from math, Chem, Physics, Cross Validated or few other sites which are definitely not SO? :/
@HTTPS haha that has happened to me at least twice
Checking the profile, not the suspension

@bro post on their meta
Unfortunately, the serious point I was making which was about the FR got lost
It's always interesting to see (as a non native english speaker) how easily confusions from aweful, awesome can turn to awkward.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ As mentioned, FRs are handled as FRs. No need to drag about people who understand math. I believe that more than 80% of the people participating here do that well.
@bro Did you know Avicii died today? :/
Looks like I'm going to be a 1%er :-P
user315433
I suppose posting his video wasn't a coincidence.
user315433
There is also awkful (adj.): involving a copious amount of text processing
20:12
@bro I've done some stuff using awk decades ago :-D
All of my better skilled colleagues still stick to sed, even nowadays.
@πάνταῥεῖ and I believe this one was handled wrongly, is all
Based on an incorrect and bold assumption that holds true only for screenshot SO questions
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Why do you believe so? That math formula rendering FR was asked for several times (even at Stack Overflow), and got all the time.
There's certainly no need to bring that up network-wide.
We're slackers, seriously we are (@rene pointed that to me quite a significant time ago)!! How can low researched s**t like this survive that long otherwise?
user315433

@SonicWizard nah, too confusing for the poor people around here

@SonicWizard I'm afraid very few people pay attention to those small details, especially in small avatar versions...

21:28

I don't smell now :(
And it wasn't a joke just funny when out of context. :P
which is kinda the point ;p
Anyway, think Horse Keeper isn't something insulting... right? @Yve
@ShadowWizard That was cool and turned yourself awkward :-D
21:32
@πάνταῥεῖ nah, since you can't smell me I'm fine with that. :D
@ShadowWizard It was @Journeys turn ;-)
@πάνταῥεῖ you know it didn't ping @Journeyman right? ;)
@Journey's will ping him though
That character is small, but important! :P
@ShadowWizard Sure, that would have been an awkward action :-D
You afraid to ping people?! @πάνταῥεῖ :D
@ShadowWizard I mainly avoid it, but I'm not really afraid to do so.

Well, I have to admit, that I'm starting to get deeper into Delphi. But it seems to be more the major devs faults, and can't be blamed to the language originally.
user315433
But the main site logo looks okay to me. Meta is broken for sure
@πάνταῥεῖ I programmed in Delphi for few years.... Delphi 3... it was more Pascal than Delphi actually. It felt... old. But it worked!
@ShadowWizard Sure. Every programming language works. It's your turn to get knowledged how the compiler exactly works.
The first thing I was looking into more depth was the assembly level stack framing and such stuff.

Yes, And With Furious Anger.
user315433
I, for one, don't mind font unification. Georgia is nice but old-style numbers aren't really suitable for writing math. (Hence, 1500 in Lucian's post is in MathJax.)
I'm pretty sure that fonts are a big consideration for several sites and may be made one of the exceptions for the unification for that very reason.
user315433
23:14
It's said that serif goes better with MathJax, which is true, but most of MathJax enabled sites, including MathOverflow, use sans serif fonts anyway.
user315433
Maybe. Otherwise, this could be Joe's headstone:
user315433
I'm sure there are studies about it but I think sans-serif is usually easier to read?
user315433
Other things being equal, which they are usually not for different typefaces. Georgia works fine on English and Christianity, and both designs would lose something if they go sans-serif.
Yeah, ELU would look odd with Sans Serif fonts for the post bodies...
user315433
23:21
TIL on Christianity, Georgia is a fallback; the full list is 'LusitanaRegular',"Palatino Linotype",Palatino,"Hoefler Text","Book Antiqua",Georgia,serif; I probably don't have most of those fonts.
Wow, that's a deep cascade...
I can understand why they want to simplify.
user315433
Anyway, the mobile theme has the same boring sans serif for all sites already, and people manage.
But the mobile theme doesn't have the site themeing, so the mismatch isn't as obvious.
an in theory one of the results of the new responsive themes might be sites that work properly on phones.
