@Derpy Have you watched EG5 E4…5 “Forgotten Friendship” yet? Watch it (see above). Or perhaps continue your very drawn out review of the S7 finale so you get to its end before the next season starts to air and you'll forget your own thoughts.

@b_jonas been a little busy rethinking my home "pc" setup.

@Derpy I have to, um, rethink it too. Meaning that I have to choose and buy a new motherboard, RAM, CPU, case with power supply, batch of large hard disks, a solid-state drive, and a few other cheap peripherials. Then, when I'm satisfied that the new setup works, get rid of this very old machine with the ill motherboard.

@b_jonas ah, nope, I am just evaluating some different solutions for added security.
Windows "security suites" (which I won't call antivirus since we have a lot of enlightened users that feel the urge to be very precise on the distinction between viruses, malware and so on. And I am not in the mood to discuss that) are getting worse by the day.
What was born to be a secondary safety net for catching OS related issues and exploits lately have by far become a tantrum of "vendor X has backdoor for spy entity Y" and so on. And every vendor is now trying a lock in approach by forcing users into login based subscriptions (before you just had an activation key)
Linux.... looks promising. Or at least would look promising if it wasn't tainted by "too many flavors, no one knows how this specific builds actually works" problems.

Well yes, there's a lot of software stuff I have to fix on my home computer too.
Just buying the better hardware won't fix most of them.

People suggesting firejail on mint -> go to software manager -> nope, this is the obsolete package, but you can download the new one from sourceforge... but doing so violates the only install from secure repositories and so on. Try apparmor, it is the same - either you craft your own profiles or you resort on the packages... which end with a "untested, some profile may crash the system" line.
Updates expect me to understand what is what based on the package names (yep, I have already studied the part about the various levels and update types.... but then why is mint preselecting a level 4 kernel update described as "developer" if I asked to only show me kernel updates but not to mark them? No one knows again)
Probably it IS pretty secure compared to Windows... but it requires 24/7 effort and study. Which means that probably I would need at least a year to become really competent, while in the meantime using a system with no "safety nets"
Eeek, you can even remove your own user Admin permission from the UI and get no warning until too late. At which point you either perform a not-so-easy script based recover that probably you will google and type in without any real understanding or just reinstall
Another option.... Chrome OS. Which seems very nice but also pretty tied to a google account. I love the idea of having a locked system that is little more than a browser with the ability to save files... but I hate having to be forced to use a Google account to sync my settings and data to the cloud.
The whole idea of using Chrome OS is to have a minimal attack surface browsing device, all my data would be stored on a separated offline machine, so any synch is just ads datamine material without any added value for me.
as you can see, it is indeed a mess.
Fell free to give any personal viewpoint or suggestion if you want. You can ever browse the tavern for some similar discussion I had there, but be aware that I think the discussion drifted more on trying to convince me that I am too paranoid that giving actual though material.
That said....
@b_jonas yep, sorry. I had been thinking about it for a while now and I somehow feel I do own you some apologizes. I will try to at least finish my comments on the finale tomorrow, maybe even include one of the EG special if I get time.

@Derpy I would not recommend Chrome OS for your personal machine where you actually want to do stuff. It is true that adminning a computer requires a lot of study and time to keep yourself up to date, but I think that's still true on a Windows machine. I had to learn a lot to be able to use Windows in my previous job, where I had to use Windows.
I had to find a lot of Windows software for my specific needs, and many of them aren't obvious to find.
That said, the internet often helps in this sort of thing. You can often find other people who have already done much of whatever you want to do.
@Derpy I don't think the reactions about the EG special are so urgent. I'm asking about the season ending beacuse S8 will start "soon" (you know, on the time scale we're speaking about here), and there's some chance that it will continue the story elements introduced in the finale, at which point you'll no longer remember your original thoughts. Sort of how it's hard to recall my original good image of Starlight that the S5 finale gave me after S6 started so soon.
That said, I'm also a procrastinator, and there's a lot I owe in documenting too. In particular, I finally decided to watch Steven Universe and should make a writeup (of one or two pages) about my impressions.
I watched it when I had time for a marathon, because I knew that I won't be able to stop watching it once I start, unless it's so bad that it wasn't worth watching in first place.
(And no, it's not bad. I'm glad I watched it.)
