@Shog9 obviously our own questions
@SmokeDetector k bad parenting, I'd say
@Catija whoa :(

@M.A.R. You should see their other two posts :/

a huntsman hatched a bunch of babies in my bedroom :'(

user202362
but I read on the internet that huntsman babies are harmless so I relocated them to a cockroach infested area

@Shog9 Why did the Community user add in the text "<waffles waffles ...waffles >" in this revision? As far as I know, it was initially added by a then-SO mod (remember, SOFU mods had moderator powers on then-MSO), then rolled back 41 seconds later. Why did the 2014 edit to replace MSO links with MSE links add it back?

I suspect the fixup script wasn't taught to look at rollbacks
alternately, waffles

@Shog9 Were rollbacks treated specially at the time? Are they still treated specially? Shouldn't they act just like normal edits, if they aren't now?

they aren't and weren't
they're special

1:40 AM
I remember from my time that rollbacks would show as "Rollback to Revision [x]" in the post history, but as "rolled back to a previous revision" in the user edit history. Is this still the case, @Shog9?

you might think you could get the latest revision of a post with something along the lines of,
    select top 1 Text
from PostHistory
where PostHistoryTypeId in (2,5)
and PostId=[target]
order by PostHistoryId desc

If so, shouldn't it also say "Rollback to Revision [x]" in the user edit history, so it matches the post history?

but... that would ignore the latest revision if it was a rollback

@Shog9 In that case, it wasn't the latest revision. There was another one after that, a tag edit.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog that would be PostHistoryTypeId=6
which, if you were looking for the last revision to the post body, you would rightly ignore

1:43 AM
@Shog9 Shouldn't a rollback that affects the body be treated just the same as any other body edit?

Rollback body is PostHistoryTypeId=8
So in the hypothetical query above, you'd add that to the list containing 2 and 5
if you forgot to do that...
waffles

@Shog9 Why does that exist? Shouldn't it just act like any other type of edit? Is there a reason why it has its own type?
Also, can you answer my questions about edit summaries mismatching?

The reason it has its own type is that someone - let's pretend it's Jarrod - created a post history type for rollbacks in 2008

@Shog9 Why has it existed for over nine years, instead of being changed?

This can occasionally be useful though. Let's say you're looking to raise a flag on a rollback war: you can query for battling rollbacks without bothering to look at the actual text changed.
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog there are bigger fish to fry
Carp
Catfish
Sheephead

1:46 AM
@Shog9 How about if someone edits a post, but chooses to edit from an older version?

Sheepshead?

Or, manually rolls back the edit by typing or pasting in the source of an older version?

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog that is still a rollback
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog that's just an edit

@Shog9 Won't that allow someone to bypass the autoflag, then?

user202362

1:47 AM
there is another autoflag for edit wars
but rollbacks have the unique characteristic that you can trivially create a new revision without the effort and restrictions normally imposed on edits

@Shog9 So if rollbacks were treated just like any other edit, and a war started, won't it trigger the edit war warning?

so they are a bit more susceptible to battling
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog maybe. Eventually.

@Shog9 Also, no grace period.

I remember from my time that rollbacks would show as "Rollback to Revision [x]" in the post history, but as "rolled back to a previous revision" in the user edit history. Is this still the case, @Shog9?

I have no idea; you can trivially test this yourself

7 mins ago, by Sonic the Anonymous Hedgehog
If so, shouldn't it also say "Rollback to Revision [x]" in the user edit history, so it matches the post history?

1:49 AM
I will note that the [x] has no meaning outside of the revision history page; it doesn't correspond to anything internally, and is calculated and displayed purely to make reading the revision history page a bit easier.

@Shog9 So it's rendered on-the-fly, and not just static text like most edit summaries?

Similarly, when you link to a specific revision (as you did above) the URL that contains the number is translated to something else to enable retrieving the text

@Shog9 So that's why there was an old bug where it would show as a GUID instead of a revision number?

correct
that guid represents an edit (potentially involving multiple history entries) internally

1 min ago, by Sonic the Anonymous Hedgehog
@Shog9 So it's rendered on-the-fly, and not just static text like most edit summaries?

1:52 AM
For the revision you linked at the start of this conversation, the actual revision comment reads Rollback to [9976db4a-58dd-4963-86a0-22a1e7719edd]
But of course, that is not what is displayed

Okay, so would it be feasible to implement this in user histories, to make the post history's version match the user history version?

it would be feasible, and also pointless
the number has no meaning in a user history
one might assume that "rollback to Revision 3" and "Rollback to Revision 19" are different actions, but they are not
it would increase the cost of rendering user history and the potential confusion of reading user history

2:13 AM
@Shog9 In the user history of the mobile site, I can see the GUIs. Is this intended?
The post history in the mobile site just redirects to the full site's version
@Shog9 Also, it can be used to tell whether they actually clicked on the rollback link, or pasted in an old source and typed in "Rollback to Revision 3" as the edit summary, without turning to SEDE.

alexolutUser revision history contains a hash key in the mobile web: Full web says "a previous revision":

Mario Kart for iOS???

2:40 AM
@Catija Shouldn't the prefilled prefix for off-topic closures by mods show as "I'm closing this question as off-topic" instead of "I'm voting to close this question as off-topic"?

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I'm pretty sure there's no way to actually make the default text recognize who's closing the question.

It used to say "This question appears to be off-topic because it is about"; when was it changed?
@Catija Also I instantly RC flagged the question just before you closed it, so I could score a helpful flag

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog The current text is what I've always know it to be.
We want to say why it's not on topic, not what it is about.

They must have changed it before you gained 3k+ rep on any site

Not if I got sufficient rep on a beta site.

2:45 AM
@Catija The corresponding level on a beta site. I forgot to say that.
@Shog9 Why is it that on beta sites, you need more rep to edit than to VTC, while on graduated sites you need more rep to VTC than to edit?

Only 500... and I think I had 500 before M&TV left beta... and I know I had 500 before ELL left beta.
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Sounds like a question you could ask on MSE and help all of us learn...

3:14 AM
My guess: on beta, the focus is more on deciding the site scope, thus VTC/VTR

@SensibleAlexander Also I noticed that at 1000 rep, you only barely earn the right to edit by solely suggesting edits.
And if any of the posts you edited gets deleted, you lose the right.

Q: Change the default generic closing as off-topic text for moderators

Q: Should the post ban message be reworded?

Sonic the Anonymous HedgehogWe get tons of posts from users asking about bans, perhaps assuming that their case is somehow different from the others, or that the ban was incorrect, or that they need to ask a question now, etc. Of course, the only way out of a ban is to improve your existing posts and have them upvoted, and ...

@SensibleAlexander What do you think?
(since you chime in on these types of discussions)

6:46 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog The proposed message looks good. You might also be interested in this meta post on MSO regarding creating account to evade ban
like, probably proposing the help center for "post ban" to include this portion

@SensibleAlexander Which one?

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I prefer the longer one, because experience shows that users were lazy to open, read, and understood the help center...
instead, they went to meta, "rant", then got closed as a dupe to the ultimate "What can I do when getting “We are no longer accepting questions/answers from this account”?"

7:14 AM
@SensibleAlexander You should probably post that as a comment on the question.
