Hey @Shog9; you around? Quick question for you:
Is the advice of locking/deleting still current? Or is that just for cases where problematic comments are coming in from either the OP or other users? — Lilienthal 6 hours ago
Uh...I'm not sure, @Lilienthal. I'd guess so (not sure what might have changed that?)...but maybe I'll see if Shog9 is in Tavern on the Meta, and ask him. This is essentially his answer, anyway. — Shokhet 1 min ago

@Shokhet It's what we've done on IPS relatively recently... we'll flag for CM attention and close/delete.

@Catija Aha. Okay.
...like I said, I don't know of any reason why the guidance may have changed. But figured that it can't hurt to confirm.

._.
@Shokhet that post is essentially what we use as a reference, so I don't see why it would change

You can see there the current CM response to anyone posing suicidal content.

2:19 AM
locking it makes sense because letting it carry on dosen't really help anyone - and they need help, not attention

Makes sense, @Catija. ...I understand why those posts were closed, but I'm mildly surprised that they haven't been deleted -- if we don't want to give advice online, closing doesn't change anything. It'll still be found and read. (Not that this is a problem, necessarily; it looks like both of those posts contain good advice.)

If it's getting deleted, I don't know that locking is necessary?
@Shokhet They were left because they're asking for second-hand advice... what to do about a friend, not oneself.

@Catija Fair point. But, if you're not CM/mod, it may take some time until it's deleted. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that users with a threshold score can lock posts unilaterally.

err no
pretty sure locking is mod only

@Shokhet No, Locking is diamond only. You may be thinking of "protecting"?

2:23 AM
@Catija The first one included themselves, tho. "myself/someone I know"
@Catija Ah.

But even high-rep users can't protect a question for two days.
@Shokhet Eh... but the OP was posting it as a test, not because they were suicidal.

You're probably right. ...it's been a while since I've really been around SE, and I don't think I have protection privileges anywhere.

If you need any proof, look at the chatter in here for the past few days about getting the make your own hat post locked... only the CMs could do it.
If Shadow can't lock something on MSE, no one can :P

Haha fair point.

2:26 AM
:D

@Catija So, yeah. This is a good question. Why bother locking at all if you're going to delete?

errrrrr
point?

Not sure. If a mod's acting, then they can just delete. If users are acting, they can close first and then delete... closing prevents answers.

but DVs there dosen't feel right either

We tell users not to vote at all.

2:28 AM
but on most sites - that feels like a pretty high priority to deal with
you need to DV to user delete

Hmmmm... flagging and CVing for regular users seems correct.
Your answer there doesn't say users should delete... it says flag for mods to delete...

We almost definately need a mod to look at it

And mods deleting is important because it prevents other users from undeleting the post.

since someone needs to quietly bring in a CM?

Yes.

2:31 AM
Hopefully, flagging and contacting CMs will take care of it much more quickly than user Cvs will. (Depending on the speed and reliability of user-closing on whatever SE site you're on.)

@Shokhet Depends on how active the users are vs the mods.
yeah.

@Catija Exactly
Anyway, I gotta run. Feel free to ping me back in to this discussion if/when it continues :)

If it's middle of the night in the US, stuff on IPS can be closed in 30 minutes because we have a lot of active European close voters... but all of the mods are asleep.
Toodles!

lol
that's kinda one of my selling points as a mod
Well, we have one other asian mod, a handful of europeans and a few americans but close enough

Q: Net Neutrality and Stack Overflow / Stack Exchange

Shog9It's July 12th! Special thanks to Jon Chan for whipping up a dismissible banner for this, so we didn't...

@OptimusPrime oh I see @ani did lock it, so the team didn't forget. And yeah, your post should be eligible, the downvote dropping it to -1 was cast after the event already ended.

@AndrewT. there is link to some spammy site. There isn't even a question, so it can't be innocent/legit post. So it's a spam posted by spammer, trying to conceal it behind code block.

Q: Is it possible to horizontally center an image on Stack Exchange sites?

Ben SSince we can only use Markdown and a limited subset of HTML/CSS is it possible to center an image, or any block element for that matter, on the Stack Exchange sites?

(i.e. the answers there)

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard Read more carefully

reading carefully, falling on face anyway

I've told them to drop the center and ... use jQuery?
Came from your post on MSE. Actually, the problem is you're trying to center an image with NBSP (or so it seems) which usually makes things more complicated. If you remove all the NBSPs, all of the images will be side-by-side naturally. — antimo yesterday
@Nae I don't know what do you mean by "look way better" except that it's centered on the desktop (and the last one is broken), and it's also broken on SE app. — antimo yesterday
so, I give up ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@AndrewT. jQuery is so 2016. These days everyone using AngularJS! :D

12:34 PM
Is there a meta post "Should I try to center the images?" I hope the answer is "No." (to the question, not the meta post)

@AndrewT. nope, but turns out images are centered in the iOS app:

Q: Images are not centered horizontally

alexolutWhen looking to post in Android app all images aligned to left: For iOS-app and mobile version of web all images centered horizontally: App Version: 1.0.85 Device Manufacturer: LGE Device Model: LG-D802 OS Version: 5.0.2 (152331922a212)

As for center or not, it's really a personal preference, like choosing where to add line breaks... it's not noise, it's not bad, so can't see any reason why not try and center.

and doesn't work well on Android app

@AndrewT. what's broken in it?
@AndrewT. nothing work well on the android app, never did.

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard those 4 images don't look like centered at all... (on desktop version)

It works, that's it. Not well, not good, and many times bad. I'd give it 2 out of 10 score, think I did once in the Play Store.
@AndrewT. oh. Well, since all images are in batch anyway I'll make one big image using image editor, then upload only this single image.
In image editor we can center anything, easily. I think.

12:51 PM
OP's comments on here were already self-deleted, but OP mentions that they don't want to combine the image since "I like to give each image its own description"

@Shog9 @balpha @bluefeet can any of you please clear kick the MSE featured questions cache? the Silly Putty still appears as featured anywhere, on all sits, even though the tag was removed 22 hours ago. Thanks!

Q: Post remains featured even if [featured] tag is removed

TuringTuxThis question about nominations for Pro Tempore Moderators on Computer Science Educators Meta was a featured question, but was unfeatured on June 23. However, it sometimes still appears as featured on the main page of Computer Science Educators SE: This might have something to do with the fact...

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard also would be good to make a new build! Site rev. is still 2017.12.22.

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard nothing to do with featured logic. Still in the tag engine: meta.stackexchange.com/tags/featured

@Shog9 not sure what you mean. There is no featured tag on the question itself, yet it appears as featured anywhere.
You mean because it's the last tag question the system wait full day before "clearing" the tag?

No I mean the subsystem that returns questions for a given tag still thinks the tag is there

@alexolut don't think it's related, tag engine isn't part of the codebase, they don't need to change any code to remove a tag or clear cache.

2:49 PM
Click the link

@Shog9 clicked it. It shows the question in the list of questions having a certain tag, even though the question does not have that tag.

Clearing the featured cache does nothing if it then asks the system what questions have the tag and gets the same question again.

Might happen with any tag, but being featured tag that cause it to appear on all 160+ sites... think it gets some priority. No?

Isn't treated specially by the tagging system. Just another tag.

@Shog9 oh. So clear the tag cache or whatever is bugged and holding stale info. :)

2:51 PM
@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard rebuilding is necessary for accepting new translation on Ru.SO

@alexolut really? weird.
Probably Shog can't rebuild the codebase.... or can he? :)

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard phases of translations: 1. translate via transifex (by anyone who have translation rights). 2. approve translated strings in transifex by me (or any other who have rights). 3. community manager pushes transifex snapshot into codebase. 4. site should be rebuilt by any SO dev. ... Then we have new translations on ruSO.
