those "3D" should be "I"

@AndrewT. and "3D" should be "10D" if we are into ternary system now.

Gah, I like Google Colab a lot but why is it stuck on Python 2.7... no built-in gcd function.

user315433
(Or, why did Python not have gcd until 3.5?)

4:09 AM
hah. flaaaaaged

Gotta like honest, hardworking spammers that actually post something on sites, and provide us all with helpful flags.

Unlike the lazy bums whose limit of ambition is the Autobiographer badge.

I know right?

Today... if it is a good day... I shall hit 15K.
I was 20 rep from the rep cap yesterday :(

user315433
:( for all my efforts on SO.

user315433
But that's fine, I prefer slow-moving tags.

user315433
Theory: people become grumpy when the inflow of questions they see is above a certain threshold. I used to be like that. Reduced the flow rate, and things are just.fine on both SO and Math.

Considering that SO doesn't live update the front page any more, I'm not sure how "slow" it is. :D

user315433
I'm not about hitting F5. My idea was, when you see very few new questions after refresh, they appear to be a precious commodity to be maintained, repair if at all possible, etc.

user315433
4:20 AM
If you get a full page every minute, your perception of them becomes less favorable.

Sure. I understand that.

@Catija on MSE?

@JourneymanGeek On any site...

user202362
What if aliens keep humans on earth like we keep fish in fish tank?

If you have two questions per day, you tend to want to rescue them... if you have 500, you triage.

4:27 AM
I mean the 15k ;p

user202362
knowing humans are too dumb to get out

@JourneymanGeek YES!

ya, know the feeling. I'm chasing 25k, though at the moment, coasting through on spammers this week.
The funny thing is I suspect it might have been fixed eventually even if I'd not done anything

:( The bounty actually helped a lot with votes... I wasn't expecting to double the 20 votes I got but I guess the attention actually helps.

(Or we're all doomed)

4:29 AM
It's a matter of how they prioritize it... more triage ;)

I vaguely dislike bountying on meta
A lot of it feels very .... stratergic and mostly folks who're a bit focused on one specific issue

Oh, same here... Especially when the only people who can really answer the question are staff...
Seems sort of pointless since they don't really care about the rep... most of them are 100K+
But if gnat wants to use his rep on my question, that's OK.

yup
I think I had one where someone wanted a staff answer. Then I was downvoted when I was +2 just before the bounty was awarded... ._.
I was all "eh"

They probably did it on purpose.

yup
But I think after a while shrug I can just post more stuff. :p

4:35 AM
Yeah.
The one thing I do think is useful is being able to revive old posts...

to an extent

... well... someone wrote a FR 4 years ago... editing only has a short-term benefit... asking a new question attracts DVs and dupe closing... a
But you still want people to weigh in and address it.
Also, I really still want tag hierarchy.
Actually... I kind of wonder if that's something they may consider adding to the SE improvements they develop for Enterprise/Channels...

worth suggesting on MSO ? ;p

Hmmm... dunno? I would think they'd want their customers pushing for the features and I'm not one of them :(

4:54 AM
@Catija on the other hand, if you can convince someone there's value, at the very least they might plan for it, especially when its probably a somewhat substancial thing

@JourneymanGeek I guess. The problem is that I don't have the programming background to know how to sell it as a boon to developer teams... I can explain why it's awesome to be able to put the tag into a bin with and how it helps searchability... but not on a tech level.
Ugh.... tags really shouldn't break across lines in here.

hah
@Catija how that more useful than having both tags?
(Devil's advocating here)

@JourneymanGeek You can only have five.

Probably by design. Also what about hierachies that arn't always the same way?
Star-wars dosen't always mean GL

I can't have , ,..... and I got lazy.

4:58 AM
;p

user315433
I'm not sold on tag hierarchy. Every tag feature will be grossly misused, and nobody (at least on SO) will have enough energy to correct the misuse. More complexity -> more complex misuse.

@JourneymanGeek Well, GL would be higher up the chain.
I think it's slightly more complicated...

user315433
This was also my attitude toward new tags on Math. They are proposed by one category of users (those who know something about tags, and about math), and then used by an entirely different group of people.

user315433
Anyway, to take that example: George Lucas did multiple things, including Star Wars. But then Star Wars are developed by multiple people, no longer including George Lucas. So neither is a subset of the other.

user315433
It's possible that Carrie Fisher did something other than SW, too (not that I would know)

5:04 AM
No, but the star wars tag means star wars episode four... which is Lucas.
You have to be careful about which things you add to the hierarchy.
So, really you have the top tag is the film title... then the lower tags are the director/production company/primary performers... etc.

5:45 AM
@Catija its still a many-many relationship tho

6:21 AM
decouple all teh things!
tag hierarchy can't work though, seriously, it is a system designed to work through association not through lineage.
You can have a tag graph, but I am sure you have seen those before (you know the spider like diagrams that move all fancy but don't really do the best job explaining anything).

hah - I think one of the pieces of software we used in uni was just for that...
Protégé is a free, open source ontology editor and a knowledge management system. Protégé provides a graphic user interface to define ontologies. It also includes deductive classifiers to validate that models are consistent and to infer new information based on the analysis of an ontology. Like Eclipse, Protégé is a framework for which various other projects suggest plugins. This application is written in Java and heavily uses Swing to create the user interface. Protégé recently has over 300,000 registered users. According to a 2009 book it is "the leading ontological engineering tool". Protégé...

Tags are a utilitarian form of organization, @Aith; they're messy by design. We have some rules in place to help avoid complete chaos, but utility should always take precedence over organizational ideals that can't easily be achieved in practice. This is my problem with the status quo: folks are apparently wasting more time arguing about which tags are unnecessary than they are on adding those which are useful. — Shog9 ♦ Dec 31 '15 at 20:07

@Shog9 So much going on in that comment. Wish I could bounty it.
You heard it here first. Comment bounties.

user202362
I have not trolled meta for ages, but it's not because I don't love meta anymore. I am still infatuated by meta like a magpie loves meat ...

yeah, I know the reference, thus I'm okay with it... but if read out of context...

Yeah, and including all the context, and a pro tip to read it in Kyle's voice, just kind of ruin the original simple outburst nature of it

user202362
@rene only Q ban on meta, in which the case I will beg and moan & hopefully get suspension lifted before April 1st

> moan

One does not simply troll meta.

you'll get suspension lifted only on April 1st...

user202362
moan is like whine but in deeper voice

7:35 AM
well that's a game changer

@Telkitty that would be a big joke indeed, good luck ;)

@Telkitty ...whine? unless I misunderstood the meaning of 'whine', that's surely a story changer

@JourneymanGeek meta, new user list, ordered by creation date. At least 15 car insurance related account on the first 3 pages, and yet your question has no official answer. I think it is time to drop the fight.

@Derpy ehh. I think we hit the right notes there

Time to drop the fight?! We have been taking a stand and we will do it again!

@Derpy 1) its a rep train ^^ 2) stuff like this probably needs a fair bit of tooling.
that is to say I can't really see there being a quick/simple answer

6 more votes before rep-cap... voting reversal script is still too long
hmm... the votes were spaced after 2+ minutes, I guess the upvoter did read my answer before upvoting, but still... looking through the list of my answers...

8:50 AM
Devil's advocate here, but who's paging through new-user listings to see what kind of random noise inactive non-users have left in their profile? Does anybody see it? Is there a use case to browse through profiles with ZERO content? This feels like a "if a tree falls in the woods..." situation to me, but maybe it gets fixed. I just hope you're not spending any time actively seeking this out to clean up what feels like a non-issue — unless I am missing something here. — Robert Cartaino ♦ 2 days ago

@Derpy and the next 2 messages kinda showed what he's missing

and I also remember a post on a related question claiming something pretty similar ("do not flag them, that's not worth the work")
@JourneymanGeek yet I somehow fear that is the current staff vision.

@Derpy other than shog and adam talking about mitigating it a fair bit
@Derpy we have several thousand accounts like this on SU
It is literally, humanly impossible to really take a dent out of these manually

@JourneymanGeek unless you open up a new review queue and give that power to the very high rep users (which in turn will render the new workflow useless on many low traffic sites) I can't see any way to automate it. Yet, what should I do? Flag every single one?

@Derpy there's nothing to flag
that's the annoying part
flag spam posts as per normal
this is spam in profiles with no associated posts

8:59 AM
seems like a blind spot in SE's spam fighting model

@JourneymanGeek Fill up the blanks. I meant flag one of my posts and include the user account link in the message -_-'

@Derpy on SU... don't bother

@JourneymanGeek and that was my point. Unless something change - and I doubt it will - we are basically accepting it.

9:01 AM
@Derpy no no no
there's literally so many that we need to rely on the dev/cm/(sre?) team to handle it

@JourneymanGeek Do you think that is a priority right now? They're swamped as is

@Magisch shrug I'm not going to bother to delete several thousand users.

So you are accepting them until further notice :p

@Magisch I've done what I could, documented, raised awareness, metaed, made a case
What else can I do?
they're basically getting their 'spare' accounts on smaller sites swatted.

@Magisch bingo. That's what I meant. They probably have many other more urgent problems right now and this one seems to be perceived as less important than others.

9:04 AM
@JourneymanGeek You can't. Unless you want to hand destroy thousands of users a month.

@Magisch precisely

@JourneymanGeek And that was the sad part. I think that other than raise the question on meta the only thing you can do now is "live with it"

@Derpy That's because it probably is. None of us know exactly what the priorities are so we can't really sit here passing judgement on their prorities

ya
@Derpy the alternate stratergy is...
do nothing? Let the site become a wasteground of spammers?

@JourneymanGeek if I had to guess Id think shog et all will come around every couple of months and batch delete a bunch until someone decides to fix this which could take a while considering SE staff is neck deep in a host of other things right now

9:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek the problem is that this is exactly what you are will have to do now, after posting the question. Until it gets an answer, you are stuck doing nothing. Unless you start deleting them manually yourself, something that as you stated is impossible to manage for a single person.

alternately we could make it clear its an issue. Get moderator and community buy in gently so when things get quieter, its on a trello board somewhere and someone goes "ah, I can deal with it"
@Derpy if it was easy, I'd do it myself

If you felt like it you could write a script to automate deleting them on SU using your moderator web interface

There's a certain trick to constructively complain in my opinion.

But I'm not sure shog would approve of that (probably wouldn't)

@Magisch oddly, I don't code. Secondly, if I mess up, terrible things could happen.

9:11 AM
57 secs ago, by Magisch
But I'm not sure shog would approve of that (probably wouldn't)
That is why :p

@JourneymanGeek and you did, and that was the right thing to do. What I meant is that now we can only wait, so probably I will drop manually checking the user list on meta.

yup
@Derpy ahh yes
Oh, some of the other sites are playing whack a mole

moderator tooling doesn't have the same sanity checks as user tooling does since it's assumed that moderators aren't barking mad
:D

lol
Maaan
I've heard stories.

I said assumed not is the case

you need a SO mod and a employee ;p

oh, to be fair I seem to have far more restrictive ideas about what should be allowed in an user profile / chat message than most other users here

Well, traditionally profiles is anything goes, within reason

And still I wonder if you really want to allow draw gore images to be used as avatars on a network that allows for users as young as 13 years old.
But again, previous arguments I made about that seems to indicate that it is perceived as "no problem"

on meta?

9:27 AM
no, on flag. Rejected.
and I think - but I would have to check - that I also have some followup mails I got from the "contact us" feature.

ahh. I can't really comment without knowing the full picture, so to speak
Not a fan of armchair quarterbacking

Don't worry, didn't want to make a case / rant out of it. I was just saying that right now I try to avoid reporting offensive content because my latest experiences about that were far from satisfactory.
Anyway, I probably have asked it before. There is no way to see the list of flags you raised on the chat? That info is available on the main sites, but I don't think it is a feature here.

boo hoo, jsfiddle is dead. :/
It was good while it lasted.
R.I.P

9:43 AM
there's stack snippets

lol
Can't be used on their own

@ShadowWizard ?

@Derpy the site is up, but it's loading forever.
Something there is stuck, or at least between my machine and their server, don't really care.

It's quite slow, but I managed to open it

There are alternatives, e.g. jsnippet.net so it's all good.

9:46 AM
> Jsfiddle.net is UP and reachable. The website is probably down just for you...

runs perfectly fine here

Guess jsfiddle just became too big, so stopped really caring for those small things like load times or when it's borked for certain countries.
@Derpy consider yourself lucky! ;)

@ShadowWizard maybe your company shouldn't have used that cheap China based ISP?

Also, wondering. Chat offensive messages flags can be handled by the 10k+ users in the room, right?

@Derpy yep
you have some?

9:56 AM
@rene so basically, unless a mod manages to get an hold of the flag BEFORE the room acts.... An "our rooms culture allows us to post this kind of message" room can easily enough drop any form of flagging, call names on the flaggers (assuming they noticed somehow who may have raised the flag) and simply hide everything under the carpet. And the flagger won't even get a list of raised flags with a description "declined".
Seems fine -_-

@Derpy more or less, yeah. The flagger can chat-flag for mod, though
and mods tend to look poorly upon rooms declining valid flags

is the "Flag for moderator" option handled by user elected mod or diamond/staff ones?

@Derpy by both, I believe

because I seems to remember some user site mod actively taking part to the hide under carpet shenanigans
and that stirred a whole lot of pain and rants when it came out and the diamond ones rained down the hammers of justice on them...

@Derpy its handled by mods
@Derpy eh. That would get quite a lot of mods and probably staff annoyed
Remember Mos ;p

10:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek that was one of the scenarios I had in mind. How long did it went before Shog noticed and acted?
And my point is that the system seems far to open to allow hiding stuff to the diamonds.

@Derpy shog acted quite a few times

@Derpy Multiple times...

@Derpy If that happens, you can raise it on meta
If this is indeed the case, heads might even roll

They become floating heads ...

Is a question relating to two or three sites on topic on meta?

10:09 AM
@Derpy SOme of the mods may disagree but I've always felt that chat moderation has to be a consistant/long term project
You can't helicopter moderate chat

chat needs to check itself

@Magisch Raising it on meta seems a good way to increase the amount of dramma. I would prefer to be able to directly get in touch with the staff (the contact us button for example)

@Magisch more that users and mods need to take ownership of chat.

@JourneymanGeek Thats what I mean if you have a bunch of active users that are quick on snuffing out this behavior eventually people'll learn and it'll stop happening

And gently let people know what's unacceptable

10:11 AM
Like in socvr. The conversation gets sidetracked rarely there and when it does @rene is usually there for a swift kick

so we don't need to hit them with a mallet

@JourneymanGeek I don't know... It seems to me that mods have to step in quite a lot to resolve the problem of "room policies", and if they have to step in it seems that the system is flawed somewhere.

@Derpy staff don't check them regularly. I mean the action would not be immediate. It may take a long time.

@Derpy When a "room culture" becomes this divisive mods and employees have been known to just close / nuke it

@Derpy Its the nature of chat.

10:12 AM
@NogShine possible, but for scope it might not work,

@rene Yes, that's the problem..

@Magisch in a sense, a good room, on solid ground is easy to moderate
but there's no way to really moderate em all

I have a question for religious sites..

@NogShine eeeewww .. ;) .... better try that in chat or a per site meta first. Those don't go well on MSE as we don't tend to understand 100% what is involved/drives those communities.
But maybe others here have advice.
I might be to cautious

user202362
Your IP address has been banned

10:16 AM
@Telkitty congrats! Trolling succeeded!

@NogShine some time ago it seemed to me that the "contact us" messages were indeed handled pretty fast and seriously. Now, that is not the case - have multiple month old messages that were probably just lost. Can't really blame them since they do seem to have some serious problems at the moment

user202362
not for trolling, but for forgetting password on a system not good with resetting passwords

@Telkitty Oh, that is indeed awesome.

@Telkitty you didn't tried to access the reserved area of the winter bash site, didn't you?

@Derpy Its probably still on a queue somewhere

10:18 AM
@Derpy I'm still sitting on mine from I think it was the end of august. But I know why that is so w/e

(that said, community management is probably one of those 'strange' things)

user202362
I was trying to access my own private server

user202362
but forgot that I reset password a few weeks ago :/

There's no real way to quantify its value, but its kinda critical for happy QAers

@rene Well, I lost hope on per site meta.. that's the reason.

10:19 AM
@JourneymanGeek I think the most important part of it is that people feel as if someone is listening when they moan

@Magisch which is probably true

and yet I do seem the same problems I saw when I was helping moderation on that old Ultima server.

@NogShine you can try to describe your concern without sounding as a rant and then post on MSE but you might face a negative reception if we deem the issue to be related to a specific site or can only be answered by a specif site.

@Derpy I sent mail a couple of times and got an automated reply. For the third time, I didn't even get that. Hope that's not dismissed by the staff.

Try to put yourself in the shoes of the people that have to work through that
Imagine you're shog and have 9999 things on your plate at any given time. And now imagine you also have to tend tickets
Imagine this happens on the back end of a round of layoffs where everyone is still scrambling to cover the work of those who are no longer there

10:24 AM
@rene Yes, it is about a specific site but I think the way the site sees is not correct according to SE POV. So, I seek answers from other religious sites. I also think that this specific site is giving more importance to its religion than the SE POV.

Do you want a giant drawn out meta.SE drama discussion about the merits of a religion? Because that's where I see that heading

No, I don't want drama at all :D

@NogShine sounds as a swamp where lots of people will get sucked into without a clear way out. Or you must have one and you want to test for acceptance on a wider audience. Don't expect the MSE crowd to overturn a community consensus though.

Hi. Remember this -

Q: Net Neutrality and Stack Overflow / Stack Exchange

Shog9It's July 12th! (in Coordinated Universal Stack Exchange Time) Today we're gonna be showing a banner directing readers to the blog post (and thus, indirectly, this discussion) from every Stack Exchange site. Special thanks to Jon Chan for whipping up a dismissible banner for this, so we didn't...

and this comment in particular - /cc:@Shog9
No one's asking you to meddle. I'm asking you to become aware of what's going on, and - if you feel moved to do so - speak up. Does what you say matter? That's impossible to know; but if you say nothing then it is guaranteed to not matter. Communication is the essence of democracy. — Shog9 ♦ Jul 12 at 15:32
now guess what?
You won't have Net-Neutrality.
Because of "Russian influence"
evil Russians voted for Net-Neutrality, which means that Net-Neutrality is evil
that's the real essence of democracy
gullible people, that is

I asked this like a week and a half ago: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/303548/…
so far no official response
doubtful there'll be one. I think they'll either just do something or not

10:31 AM
@Abyx I hear North Korea has powerful weapons, they might hit the evil Russians , if we ask nicely ....

@rene Well, the community consensus seems like 'when someone says that a text has interpolations, they are offensive posts' and can be flagged.

@NogShine oh boy. I will not touch such topics when asked on MSE, I think I wouldn't on a site meta but I'm not active in any of the less technical sites so I'm of no use in this dicussion, sorry.

@NogShine unless its something fundamentally wrong, SE generally dosen't stick their noses in how we run the sites
something like this is really for site meta

@Abyx where I live, they already solved the problem. The "allow ISP to throttle users at will to extort more money" is called "overbooking" and is legal unless they throttle your 100mb connection to what basically accounts to 56k levels. For an extended period of time. That you have the honer to prove. Using only tools that were approved as legally binding.

@Derpy Yeah but in future they'll be able to say "Base package is 50$/month. If you want any out-of-network news sites, thats 5$/month per site, if you want to do online gaming, extra 10$/month per game"
Stuff like that. You know like sony already does with psplus

10:44 AM
@Magisch or "sites in our network will be faster" - my current ISP actually has a slower rate for "non local" sites, presumably to save on transit.

Or, more crucially "this website isn't available to your package" what a great way to stifle competition and censor news you don't like
What are people gonna do? Not use the internet? Boycott comcast and verizon? for millions of people, they have 1 or 2 choices max
guy I know lives in in some backwater in alabama and pays 110$/month for less internet service then I get for my 10 eur a month (that comes with a cellphone contract). You know why he pays it anyways? nobody else is offering internet in that area at all

That's your democratic government, your democratic laws. Why so unhappy?

@Magisch they ALREADY do that. There is the "online gamer option" that should grant you reduced ping times and latency. Again, good luck to you proving you are getting billed for the option and not getting the reduced latency.

@Derpy All the more reason to reclassify internet as a public utility

@Derpy yup. When a ship is about to sink, first step is getting rid of extra weight.

10:49 AM
@Magisch good luck. I don't even live there, so ye know how much my voice would account to the FCC.

@Derpy MyRepublic?

@JourneymanGeek had you said OurTown instead... what a perfect waste for a joke you probably never intended.

@Derpy local ISP with a low latency plan ;p

Q: Yellow background for Stack Exchange icon in Winter Bash 2017 logo is too distracting

Shadow WizardThe logo of Winter Bash 2017 looks like this: I find the yellow background very distracting, and I even clicked it expecting a menu or at least some link. But it's just part of the logo. Can this please be changed same way it always was, transparent and less intrusive? e.g. previous year thi...

Didn't NASA itself used MLP:FiM moon in one of their presentation, complete with Nightmare Moon shadow on it?

and ... the last update to Xenoblade 2 japanese twitter account basically reduces the possibilities to find a spare copy for those who didn't preorder to a nice 0%

@Derpy I wonder whats the point of that
digital media is literally free to reproduce

It seems like every GIS tool in .NET is a port of some Java tool. And looking at .NET ports of Java code always makes me want to throw up.

@Magisch first, that implies piracy. Second, I was not talking about "we have few copies". They didn't announce that. On the opposite, they basically dropped a last minute bomb that is probably going to drastically help sales. Else the "sorry if you didn't preorder a copy" joke.

Q: Should Dr. (Indiana) Jones do it?

DEEMAfter hours of walking through the snowy woods Jones finally found the building in the middle of nowhere. He opened the main door and went in. He was in an empty space facing two rooms with closed doors in front of him. Then he saw a Tape Recorder in the corner. Freezing and shivering he turned t...

why did no one suggest he just use a fridge as an umbrella to walk under the acid rain?
It survived an atomic bomb test, it must surely withstand mere acid

@AdamLear yup, turns out it happens every time a new site icon is added.
@ShadowWizard There's not really anything to "get to the bottom of." We added two new icons to the sprite on Tuesday so all the caches of it need to be updated. All we can do is keep purging caches to make sure everyone is loading the fresh copy. That's not a temporary fix, it's the one and only fix. It just happens to be the same fix every time. But yeah, duplicating it just makes it harder for us to notice it needs purged. — animuson ♦ 7 mins ago
