4:10 PM
Gimme feedbacks

> Being awesome is what I excel at
Whhhatttt?
What is PM?

you dislike python, @jcolebrand
@Mvy project management, me thinks

I do
@Mvy project management. It's one of those "if you don't know what this is, I don't want to talk to you anyways" things

I'm not versed in US CV form so I'm a bit confused with the first section when you "advertise yourself" but seems fine anyway

That's not really a US form of CV, it's just the way SO does it
@Sathya which also probably means people will discount me for ruby, but so be it

4:25 PM
@jcolebrand My feedback: I prefer humility and statements of experience over generalized statements of self-congratulation.

@Fosco yeah, I was curious about that. I'm not actively seeking, so if they want me, well ...
What about on my current job, with the markdown etc?

@jcolebrand on your top job, you use 'coordinating' twice in the same sentence.. probably a better way to word it.
Don't say you're not as good as the DBA's on your team...
consider eliminating all uses of the word 'greenfield'

@Fosco reckon so? hmm...

It's a bit too narrative.

@Fosco what should I say then? I want to be self deprecating but point out that I'm adding the initial bits
@Fosco I did? hmmm

4:28 PM
> I am responsible for coordinating the work of myself and two other devs, and I coordinate our work with those of our dba team.

brownfield
BROWN
field

I would take sentences like that, and remove the 'I'... i.e.
> Responsible for coordinating the work of my team (myself and two other developers,) with the Database Administration team.

@Fosco but then I feel it says that I lead the dba team as well
even tho I see very well what you're saying

@PopularDemand Huh, I didn't even know rekonq existed.

I don't see what you're saying. If you say 'I' too much, you get elected president of the entire USA.

4:32 PM
> Yours: I've been responsible for the greenfield development of three of our current to-market apps and I have been primarily responsible for the introduction of a large portion of our existing codebase as well.

That hardly seems like a deterrent =)

@TimStone Neither did I.

> Mine: Key member of the development teams for three production applications.
How do you introduce existing code? ;)
I could absolutely nit-pick CV's all day.. maybe I should be in HR.

@Fosco haha, I'm horrid at this aren't I?

@Fosco People built for HR only need to nit pick one thing, then they file em in a blue bin.

4:34 PM
Ah well, it was mostly an update because they now support markdown
I can see I'll have to drop some more time on it this evening, or this weekend.

@mootinator Well said... I believe I have a relevant tweet...
@whpresscorps That's #MESpeech as in the actual word "Me" which he will over-use along with "I" and "My," right?

@balpha want the rest of us to do it too or only those in .IN?
@Fosco haha, nice

@Fosco Heh :)

@jcolebrand anyone who's closer to hong kong than to amsterdam or the US :)

4:37 PM
@jcolebrand "I was the main everything technician" is not resume-speak :)

I wish I was in Hong Kong at the moment. sighs

How about: "I leveraged value-producing synergies"
(j/k)

@Fosco but I was <wah /> <wah /> <wah /> <wah />

@balpha on it..

cool, thanks

4:39 PM
@mootinator "I fully utilised dynamic technologies to increase throughput of workflow processes by an appreciable percentile."

@TimStone I totally did that.
I appreciated that I was able to use dynamic and fluid technologies (chat) in my normal everyday workflow to increase my throughput (of chat messages)

Synergy - n - A word lazy people use when they want you to do all the work.
The training that work sent me to in new hampshire... the company is having their 2011 conference... it's called "Synergy"

@balpha sstatic: 258ms latency, 650ms total sstatic2: 326ms latency, 843ms total

@Fosco oh wow
@Sathya is that averaged or single run?

@jcolebrand averaged over 10 runs

4:41 PM
@Sathya yuck

well, their Hong Kong node is in beta, but that really sucks...

@balpha I would say that, on average, it seems to be acceptable, but not what you wanted, of course.

@jcolebrand also, that picture on the CV isn't doing you any justice.

I know ...
I was going to have my local geek gathering take a better picture of me, and I forgot
I believe I will get someone to do it tomorrow.
that should be an option

@jcolebrand the numbers per se are okay, but considering the second link has an asia node, but the first one doesn't...

4:44 PM
@jcolebrand well after getting used to waiting for ~1-2s for all the JS to be ready, the current setup is lightning fast. Relatively.

@Sathya is 69.174.57.102 Amsterdam or LA for you?

@balpha how do I figure it out? traceroute?

just click, it tells you

@balpha Amsterdam

interesting

4:49 PM
sciencepolicy.colorado.edu/socasp/weather1/keener.html <-- ow. Ow ow ow. I had to share my pain.

@jcolebrand the pain of a light purple background?

@Fosco it isn't light purple on my monitor

what is it?

@Fosco enough to make my beige walls pink next to my monitor, just because of the saturation of purple on the screen.

4:54 PM
@MichaelMrozek viewtext.org

sigh
The super important bugfix I was just completely derailed for was BY DESIGN.

Was it marked with a [status-bydesign] tag?

@mootinator did Lance submit the original work order request?
ok, that was mean of me.

:/
Bug report: OMG non-admins have access to the 'User Security' page!
Response: Yes, but... They can only change their own password there....

to be fair, I would separate that logic into its own page, and call that page "Change Password" (I know, the horrors!)

5:01 PM
I know, I know.
It's one of those features they don't see the value in.
Like it's okay for a password to be stuck at whatever an admin sets it to permanently.
So, really I should have anticipated this, having snuck the feature in referincing it in some release notes which were probably never read. =)

5:17 PM
> I just made some changes today regarding this, so this will work again after the next build. /cc @Marcel – balpha 3m ago
@balpha, always coming along to invalidate my answers. Clearly you're too efficient! ;)

> Can you provide an answer when the next build is up and running, so I can accept the answer containing the current state of affairs? – Marcel Korpel
Ouch

Hahah

Yeah, I have 18 important updates waiting, heh.

I'm off, have a good day folks.

5:23 PM
See ya, @Sathya

@Sathya have a good one!

<sob />

ok, lunch and a reboot

5:40 PM
Hello
I am 2 days from Graduating, and I have a job. Yay

Where?

appthemes.com

@Chacha102 Congrats!! :)

Do they have an office, or do you get to work from home?

no office

5:43 PM
Score

they are like SO, people all around the world
out to lunch, peace

here's your sign...

earth is flat you know?

6:14 PM
lol
And they make appearances on Repo Games.

@Fosco Clearly the poster was a troll. The midnight sun exists and is made of unicorn horns.
It's where unicorns are born and go to sleep, actually.

@badpssockpuppet Naturally..

@badpssockpuppet And every so often someone goes on a pilgrimage and is inspired with a divine idea.
And that is how jQuery came to be.

anyone else notice that meta is starting to seem like the Usenet Eternal September lately?

I don't notice anything on meta.

6:30 PM
maybe i have been gone for a while, but it seems like a lot of newbie questions are popping up

@Changeling I think it is because of an influx of new users.

Hence the expression...

(excited to see the joke)

^_^

oh, was that a prompt for me to make a joke?
hmmm...
Hence the expression, new users are like kittens; they are cute and all but don't know how to use the litter box.

6:43 PM
Me too.

Hence the expression, new users are like vegetables; you want to like them but they are so green.

New users are like something. Because stuff, and also things.

i guess the #somafia channel on irc.freenode.net died, huh?

Way to make a guy feel like a noob.

7:09 PM
Senator releases first Senate App (Slashdot). Lol, real-time positions on political issues. The better to flip-flop with my dear.

It is an app that allows you to call the Senator when installed on an iPhone.
FINALLY, iPhone users can make phone calls!

is it already time for that?
wow I've really not done a damn thing today (except I have these printouts that I'm calling research)

@balpha You'd be surprised

anybody have any experience with this cat?

7:23 PM
That is not a portman I am interested in experiencing.
2

@jcolebrand studiohack thinks he has a prizewinning family.

yeah yeah, so there you go.
I'm doing a bit of research on my co-devdays decision makers

7:36 PM
@balpha what? they're starting to talk? That's unacceptable.

you've had enough tic-toc-tic-toc to build yourself a loop

ping to the pong

@balpha that'd go against the ToS

^^
Sound has gone?

yeah, the guest has arrived
I guess Alex has some secret stuff to talk :)

7:38 PM
oh right
Or they are going to check the volumes

oh there's Joel and his cheques

where can I goto type in G#(*#@(@#it google, search for what I asked for and quit giving me partial words made of up acronyms that only look like my term

7:54 PM
I'm instituting a three-pass rule when it comes to your messages; if I can't understand it after three readings, I'll pretend I never saw it

Where is the official chat room?

@jcolebrand maybe if you put double quotes around it (works for google)

@MichaelMrozek I am double-surprised. First: you didn't already have such a rule in place? Second: why allow so many passes? I thought it'd be more like one, for you. Or perhaps zero.

Q: Why even after accepting answers "Start a Bounty" link is coming. Its not needed . Is it?

zodStart a bounty is used when --- What if I don’t get a good answer? But that link is enabled even after i accept an answer. Its not needed . Is it? I would like to post this on META . But i got banned there :-( Please some one move this to meta :-)

@balpha, I guess.

@PopularDemand gotta give him props for getting around the block....

The odd thing is that the OP isn't actually banned.
Perhaps he hit the low-quality question filter, based on that grammar.

@PopularDemand He probably thinks because he gets the 'low quality' response every time he posts that he is banned

That leads to another interesting question: did he just get lucky this time, or do SO and MSO have different filters?

I imagine that he's blocked from asking questions on Meta because of his previous -14 and -6 questions.

8:35 PM
@PopularDemand this sounds like a Meta Stack Overflow question

@jcolebrand "Meta Stack Overflow"? Is that like that site with the questions about programming?

meh ... goddamn flash

@PopularDemand what can I say, I like the new shorthand syntax
[metaso] is so easy

@TimStone So how does meta differentiate between a bad question and one a lot of people don't agree with?

@mootinator A disagreement gets downvotes a few times, a bad question gets -1'd to oblivion.

8:38 PM
@mootinator bad questions get closed

Wait, I've just though, what does he even mean "I talk against moderators"? o.O

For example, probably 90% of the at-least-somewhat-active users there know what the hell it means to close a question

Why down vote this question. You should upvote me and remove the ban - ha!

Most of the regulars don't mind closing or voting to delete, and there are enough mods there to keep new questions closed pretty regularly

Right, right =)

8:39 PM
@mootinator I don't think it does, but I guess most people can manage not getting that many down votes without getting up votes on something else.

sorry about the snapping in the other chat btw: too many people saying "oh I hear it too" ... ffs

lol

@TimStone: Well and the whining from the users that receive downvotes on Meta
at least the 1%

I do feel bad for voting on the behavior, and not the content. But I decided it's okay in this case since the behavior is the content.

@PopularDemand most of the posts on Meta Stack Overflow that get downvoted are about behavior

8:42 PM
oh lord, zod doesn't get it
"Don't hate the player, hate the game – zod"

8:55 PM
probably need to shut that discussion down

Bleh. Meta (well, not solely Meta, but especially Meta) has made me a lot more suspicious of low-quality users being trolls than I used to be.
@jcolebrand I am currently the only person in the conference. Call in.

Hmm...I wonder what caused Pidgin to crash.

poisoned food

@PopularDemand boss was in the office. I was tied up.

@OctavianDamiean lol

9:07 PM
@GeorgeMarian another reason might be that the magnetic field of the earth somehow changed

lol Another result of reduced sun spot activity?

No reason why this can't be implemented given recent features, I think: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/2645/…

Q: Show all of my question/answers to me even if they are deleted

vavaI would really like to see all of my questions and answers on the profile page, even if some of them were deleted, and I don't have enough rep to see them on the site. (Note that some questions are automatically deleted after 30 days or 1 year, and the author might be oblivious about what happen...

I can't seem to accomplish anything today.

now @zod is posting lyrics to his question...classic

9:17 PM
@mootinator I seem to be in the same boat. Well, I did delete some directories that I rsync'd to my server, but that doesn't get me paid.

I have one 'task' to do which is actually three. None of the requests actually seem to make any sense.

@MichaelMrozek you are welcome

> Wouldn't it be great, if no one ever got offended
Wouldn't it be great to say what's really on your mind
I have always said 'all the rules are made for bending'
And if I let my hair down, would that be such a crime?
Added stupid lyrics.

Look what we have here...

What a small world...

9:27 PM
O_o.
I wonder what this pattern is called.

It's called "Fishing for Which one? questions"

btnSave_Click(){ if mode = 'add' insert(); else update(); } insert() { insertOrUpdate("insert"); } update() { insertOrUpdate("update"); }
The wild goose chase pattern?
The I hate my coworkers pattern?

imagines a function DoStuff(string what) with a giant switch statement

@mootinator Looks like somebody abstracted insert() and update() into a single upsert and didn't bother updating all the callers

9:43 PM
@mootinator LOL Isn't that usually the case? :)

But they didn't really.
@GeorgeMarian Heh.
insertOrUpdate(string blah) { if (blah == "insert") db.ExecuteScalar("insertstuff", new object[] {a, bunch, of, crap}) else db.ExecuteScalar("updatestuff", new object[] {exact, same, bunch, of, crap}); }

Oh, I didn't notice the argument to insertOrUpdate. That's terrible then
There is an anti-pattern for that, but I don't remember what it's called

10:04 PM
@GeorgeEdison I recognise the name, can't for the life of me remember why though.

10:15 PM
@PopularDemand why do I feel like I just hung up with you? AmIRight?

@jcolebrand Huh?

@PopularDemand nothing, go back to sleep

10:58 PM
sigh
[status-maybe-you-should-double-check-before-I-spend-an-entire-afternoon-tracking-a-non-existent-problem-down-hmm]

Ouch, that sucks :/

11:14 PM
@mootinator they didn't give you a repro? I can't work without repros

@jcolebrand It seemed legit.

so that's a no
Today's lesson includes "Don't fix a bug that doesn't have a verifiable repro"
they keep whining here about a bug that has no repro, but that they just swear impacts them

@jcolebrand It included a screenshot of where the PM gave up trying to do a repro because it would have been too much work.

@mootinator that's incredibly not helpful from a PM
and as you've shown now with empirical evidence, it was not too much work, as it just cost them ~$300
I doubt he bills at ~$300/hr

My guess: User didn't even try it.

11:23 PM
I suggest forwarding that little snippet of analysis off to your PM and asking to not be given bugs that don't have repros

@jcolebrand See, they tricked me.
It was billed as a feature request.
So a customer said "Hey, you implemented behavior in [case X], can you also implement that same behavior in [edge case Y]?"
But whomever implemented the behavior obviously didn't agree that there was anything edge case about Y.

11:42 PM
hmmm
