@ShadowWizard I have always thought this expression to be one that could only be born in an army.

I can be very cruel... evil laugh

Officers are told to give "positive feedback" to their subordinates - so that's literally what they do. "Have some positive feedback". O_o
Instead of - "Good job on doing/finishing X/Y/Z"

If a question gets migrated to a site that the OP doesn't have an account on, will the OP still get notifications about comment and answer replies to their post?

@Oded well, in my army days 99% of the actions were negative, e.g. פול ל-50

@JasonC They won't. The question would need to be re-associated to their account if they ever do create an account on the target site.

@Oded but they do get notification for the migration itself, right? /cc @Jason

@Oded Are you sure? meta.stackexchange.com/a/96956/230261 seems to contradict that.

Got a minute for a test? I can make a test post on mse, you can migrate it to a site I don't have an account on and leave a comment, then we can delete it and pretend it never happened.

From what I can see - if one has an account on the target site, you get notified of the migration. For answers - you always get notified, even if no account on the target site. For questions - you get notified if you don't have an account there, but only once a comment or answer have been posted on it.
I looked at a few recent migrations and what the different OPs got notified and when.

12:14 PM
Oh sweet. Thanks. I just spent the last 20 minutes putting together a case for notifying accountless authors of comments/answers on migrated posts, lol. Closes sede tabs, resume Netflix.
Huh

@JasonC pretty sure I got such notification once, will try to dig it up

In almost 30% of migrated posts network-wide, the OP never made an account on the target site. That number's higher than I expected.

About two years ago, a significant event happened at Stack Overflow: a new system, named Providence, was released. Providence would allow us to tell which technologies a visitor is interested in, and measure the “fitness” between a visitor and a job. The release of Providence marked a stepping stone in Stack Overflow’s continuous effort to be “smarter” and invest in data science, and it was only the beginning.

Aurélian Gasser, a developer on the Stack Overflow Jobs team, has detailed the long road towards building the greatest developer job search tool on the internet in his Medium post, A Dive …

@JourneymanGeek There I updated the sample list.

But I'd suppose there is a C# library implementing an equivalent of that optimization function...

1:58 PM

I wonder
If there is only one candidate for a election with 2 positions, the election gets canceled unless there are at least 3 candidates, right?
If so, would it be considered system abuse if 2 other people got rep on the site with the intent of running so the one candidate they support can become moderator?

user315433
@Magisch A frivolous nomination can be withdrawn. But if they earned 300 reputation points and wrote something that passes as a nomination post, I think they are in the clear.

user315433
Their intentions are theirs to know.

And heck they might pull a Jeremy Banks, get elected, actually take it seriously, and then get hired. Which isn't a bad thing. Ya never know.

user315433
The onus is on the community to see what is going on (just one viable candidate with 2 positions), and respond by adding stronger nominations.

2:10 PM
@Gerry That would be a win for these people then, no?
I'm considering doing this since I like the one candidate and don't like to see the election canceled
If that draws out another good candidate that's a win-win-win for me, no?
I just want to know that I won't be banned for it :p

user315433
@JasonC I don't know how seriously he took it, but he was a mod April - November 2015 and was hired in October 2016. So this is not an example of a smooth mod->employee transition.

@Shog9 Any opinions? Would you consider obtaining 300 rep on a site to run for moderator so the election doesn't get canceled abuse of the system?
Like providing an alternative that people probably won't go for.

user315433
@Magisch I suggest not to. Cai can win on their own terms, and GD site will come up with enough candidates. It's not a ghost town. Coming to town as a support brigade can only hurt Cai's chances. We already had a discussion here of whether it's "Charcoal bloc" or "Charcoal briquette" in terms of mod elections.

@Gerry I'd only do it on the last day
if no other nominees are forthcoming, of course

user315433
2:23 PM
@Magisch Oh, and the elections doesn't simply get cancelled in that case. The nomination period is extended by one week, and there's a post on meta drawing attention to the fact. This has not yet failed to produce additional candidates.

@Gerry Alright
That's very reassuring
Guess I won't need 300 rep after all there :D

user315433

Trivia: what sites, other than SO, had two moderator elections in one year?

user315433
2:46 PM
The one I know is Drupal.

Of course, I wonder how many mods SO needs before they get their legendary queues in check, or if it even scales like that

user315433
They have a Data Science team now... maybe after having optimized the Jobs search they'll come up with some really clever flag handling algorithms.

user315433

@Magisch depends a lot on how you earn that 300 rep

@Magisch There's actually been a short tradition of candidates standing for similar reasons
I actually stood in 2 elections (AU and SF) cause someone there was like "We need enough people for a primary ...."

user315433
@Shog9 Say it's 100 suggested edits. Good/bad?

and if you care about a site enough to do that, getting that 300 rep should already be in place
@Gerry that's a little like digging a grave with a spoon...

@Gerry I'd reckon that'd nearly always be seen as abusive, given the time constraints implied by the scenario itself.

user315433
3:08 PM
Yeah, on a site other than SO or Math it'd probably become a Meta topic apart from the election.

on the other hand, if you hit a HNQ or proper-like ground out good answers...

user315433
Unrelated: once SO is excluded, Math has about 50% of all obviously-chatty comments on the network.

You'd be...
...probably not expressing much in the way of expertise or interest in the site's topic via your actions
...probably not expressing much knowledge of moderation / governance relevant to the site (possible, but unlikely)
...dumping a large number of edits in a short period of time on a site that, if it wasn't rather quiet probably wouldn't meet the criteria for the scenario in the first place
IOW, even if you succeeded, your nomination wouldn't appear a very credible alternative

user315433

@JourneymanGeek That is just what they want you to believe. You think there are only two heads....

I guess I could see a scenario where you're, like, renowned literature expert and organizer, stepping up to help out our quiet Literature site in its first election that we've inexplicably approved despite all the quiet, and earning 300 rep in 2 days is just no big deal...
...but unlikely.

3:19 PM
@Shog9 entirely in theory, that could be done with one HNQ over two days or so... ;p

but look closely. Even Oded is just another floating head on a mannequin, disguised to look like a normal person. And probably balpha too!

I'm PRETTY sure you need to be at least a little crazy to be a room owner.

@Shog9 100 edits in 14 days, doesn't sound too bad

@Magisch you don't have 14 days

considering if you start when nominations begin and are done by 1 day before extended nominations close
Nominations is a week and extended nominations another week, no?

user202362
3:27 PM
I have seen C++ lounge's room owner get removed for setting a rather dangerous title to the room

@Shog9 Also, the goal wouldn't be to be an alternative really. The goal would be to prevent cancellation of the election

@Magisch this would require you to identify the scenario before you have any evidence that it actually exists. IOW, you'd have to start earning rep on the chance that the election would be a dud.

Well yeah
still, give or take one or two answers, suddenly it's not that bad anymore
I'm talking a hypothethical here

@Magisch you asked if it'd be considered abusive. The election would be canceled because of a lack of alternatives; if you're providing a non-credible alternative, then you're not really preventing a cancellation situation, you're just making it harder to identify; that's... a bit abusive.

@Telkitty eh, isn't C++ lounge somewhat infamous?

3:30 PM
@Shog9 Alright, that's what I wanted to know
Obviously it's utopic to become a credible alternative in a couple of days when you have no relation to the subject matter and never used the site before. Although I could probably find a non abusive way to get at 200 rep in 5 days on any site give or take

@Magisch also worth considering. If you have no relation to the subject matter, and have never used the site before... why do you care?

@JourneymanGeek I care about every site on the network
I fight spam everywhere

erm. I'm not really sure how true that is.

Consider that by far the fastest way to get 300 rep is to answer a bountied question and win... Which also requires you to know something about the subject matter. The slowest way is probably to ask barely on-topic questions that never get voted but do get answered, and accumulate the accept bonuses.

Well, to know something about the subject matter, or to make offline "arrangements".

3:33 PM
@Shog9 You forgot finding a relatively easy but on topic question and researching outside of your expertise to find an answer
very likely to attract a couple of upvotes

There's a handful of sites I care about, that involves at least a minimal engagement with the community

@Magisch that's not really faster than a bounty

That's the most realistic way for someone with no prior knowledge to get at that rep

room topic changed to Telkitty on the Meta: MY GOD, IT'S FULL OF STARS! Wheel of blame link bolted on for your ease of use: jsfiddle.net/Ldvwp8uv/12/embedded/result [bug] [crickets] [discussion] [excuses] [support] [waffles]

@Shog9 Not really, bountied questions tend to be those who are hard. I'm talking about finding an easy question

3:34 PM
@Magisch eh, I'd disagree.

You can nominate other people for mod elections too, can't you? Maybe somebody worthwhile could be convinced to legitimately run.

@Magisch "easy" is probably still suggested edits. Can also be fast, if you're a fast editor and there are actively-reviewing moderator(s) and you somehow manage to not piss them off by making a ton of edits in a day.

you can, however convince them to run

@Shog9 It's very easy to do that

3:36 PM
Huh, what am I thinking of. Maybe I'm just remembering some sort of non-election "we need a mod" post or something from a long time ago.

Just use a) the most recent questions and b) do complete edits, not just one-trick-ponys
and not more then 20 a day

@JasonC I literally cannot think of any case where someone was nominated to run

@Magisch keep in mind, edits are rate-limited now by # in flight, so you're blocked at 20 until someone reviews. Blocked longer if whoever is reviewing gets tired of seeing your name.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah... I'm sure I'm completely misremembering something else.

@Shog9 Right, but the goal isn't to spam all of it out in a day

3:37 PM
@JasonC First two elections on SO allowed 3rd-party nominations.

Goal is expressly not to piss of the site community, but to do something actually valueable that also gets you there

Maybe that.

Then it takes more time

Well yeah

user202362
The quickest way to become a mod(if you are highly skilled), is to hack the database. That coincidentally, is also the quickest way to get yourself banned

3:37 PM
If say I formulated this plan when the extended nominations start, I'd still have plenty of time to get the rep at 20 edits a day

room topic changed to Tavern on the Meta: MY GOD, IT'S FULL OF STARS! Wheel of blame link bolted on for your ease of use: jsfiddle.net/Ldvwp8uv/12/embedded/result [bug] [crickets] [discussion] [excuses] [support] [waffles]

I wouldn't like an election getting canceled, but I wouldn't abuse a site community over it
standards and all

Well I mean
Also, if there aren't enough candidates to keep the election going, it's possible the site isn't active enough to need another mod, too.

or, if the original intent was to stop the cancelling by abusing the system... Ask a friend to create an account, casually award him/her a bounty, have him run a "fake" mod candidate, laugh and giggle for your perfect plan while the SE staff won't notice anything....
...
....
And enjoy the ban when you will find out that somehow they DID notice.

@Magisch even at that rate, by the second day there's a very good chance most of the questions on the front page would have your name & face on 'em. So you'd have to be making some really delightful edits.

3:39 PM
And if the current mods aren't pulling their weight any more that's a different question to ask.

@Shog9 Not that hard most questions can use a rewording to be made clearer
I'm just saying I think I could do that

I don't mean "acceptable". I mean "oh look it's that guy again - WOW THIS QUESTION IS FASCINATING I NEVER SAW THE DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH BEFORE MAGISCH'S EDIT OH PLEASE RUN AS MOD GREAT WIZARD!"

And if I couldn't I would accept I can't do it and move on
I'm not even that sure I'd be a good mod to begin with

@Shog9 Great, now I'm going to spend the next forever looking for the perfect opportunity to actually leave that as a comment somewhere.

I think I could do it well but that may be my vanity speaking

3:43 PM
Incidentally, that type of edit tends to demand at least some minimal topic knowledge, so... Non-abuse is back to requiring you to have some small interest in the site beyond gaming an election.

It certainly requires you to get familiar with the subject matter, but you can do that as preparation
It's a bit of work, but you can do it

@Telkitty or hired

Like starting to use LaTex to get at that site or researching about christianity
Tbh though there are very few things in the stack sphere that I couldn't develop at least a small interest for if called for
not saying I'd be any good at it but that's another story

Not just that. Also learning that TeXSE likes minimal examples, and Christianity likes questions focused on the teachings of a specific sect/denomination. Local culture, as it applies to the topic.
I've watched folks try this; a good copyeditor with a bit of research can go in and clean up a poorly-written question, but if they're polishing a turd that's not gonna generate a lot of goodwill.

I'm very ashamed to admit that I spent a completly inappropiate time reading site metas for no reason other then that I find the nucks and crannies of various stacks entertaining

3:49 PM
*nooks

Like I probably read more of the workplace meta then of the actual workplace
:p

(anyone here remember when we hired a team of people to go through a bunch of sites and edit questions?)

I'll take a guess and say that ended poorly

@Shog9 it was.... chaos?
tho, didn't a good chunk of them stay on in other roles?

That has become ExpertsExchange

3:51 PM
@Magisch naw, they learned a lot about the sites in the process; it was a good exercise. However, we did have to give them special "non-bumping editor" privileges.

If only there was a job for reading and responding to meta posts

<----

You do more then that

Yeah, but it's debatable whether any of that is in my charter

I'd do that job as a volunteer if I could :p

3:52 PM
Well, that's kinda how I got hired

Consider though that you did that at exactly the right time
These days, y'all have a full community team

I doubt I'd have a shot even if I tried my ass off. As companies grow the hiring process formalizes, I guess. I suppose you guys have dedicated interviews and hire people with years of experience these days

Right - we have folks who actually studied for work like this. Me, I just happened to be around when the place opened, so I do whatever needs to be done.

I sometimes do it for free ;)

user202362
3:55 PM
if you have pets, you do volunteer work all the times

So unless I want to desert stack and go somewhere else I suppose I'll stay at doing what I do as a hobby

@Magisch heh, in my case I tend to stick around (and help out) cause I like certain spaces.
Its somewhat more than a 'hobby'

@JourneymanGeek sure, but doing what you do as a hobby as a day job is the penultimate dayjob, no?
If I could dispense with having to code for half of minimum wage and spend all day on stack I'd be a happy camper

true, but the lack of that isn't really going to make me quit SE

sure

3:58 PM
I mean sure, I went from hanging out all day as an unemployed bum, to spending lunch hour + before/after work on the sites...

me quitting would require somewhere else being better then stack in the ways that count which is ... unlikely

lol
Well, I was elsewhere before stack and somewhere else before that...

I was too
I used to moderate minecraftforums
total and complete shitshow compared to stack

oh, my old digs are decent
I actually left cause I kinda dropped of the face of the earth for a few years

I got used to objectivity and civility here

@Magisch but that's something that almost any community can have

sure
but even the underbelly of stack has vastly fewer

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in answer, pattern-matching website in answer: For furigana, can katakana be used instead of hiragana? by rankup111 on japanese.SE

@SmokeDetector Speaking of low-participation elections, Japanese had the weirdest one: japanese.stackexchange.com/election

user315433
But in this case "cancelled" means "we forgot to check the number of candidates before the election began, so it had to be restarted".

4:58 PM
@Gerry By "weirdest" do you mean it involved a lot of large monkey suits and girls trying to blow bugs into each others mouths through plastic tubes?

@bjb568 selfie without a stick?

My blog isn't fancy (standard WP), but even it has a search box. stackoverflow.blog on the other hand...

Although one can type something into URL, for example stackoverflow.blog/welcome and end up with an article where the title begins with that word: stackoverflow.blog/2011/09/15/welcome-chaos

Was trying to figure out who on the Community team matches

Right - we have folks who actually studied for work like this. Me, I just happened to be around when the place opened, so I do whatever needs to be done.

Isn't the SE blog Wordpress based again?

user315433
It is. But it doesn't have the search plugin or whatever.

It's been a long while since I used wordpress. I thought that was just standard packaging. Good to know though, I suppose.

Maybe it's Juan M, who "graduated with a Psychology degree [...] decided to pursue a career as a school teacher. After several years of teaching Math, Science and Spanish, he discovered community management and retreated to the salt flats" stackoverflow.blog/2015/08/21/…

user315433
Ana did CM things professionally before SE, but that's not what she studied for.

Tim Post and bluefeet came directly from programming jobs. So did Jon, I think.

I want to comment on teh blogs, but I would prefer to do it from my SO account.

yeah, well. That is a long standing FR

At least it is a rational one

I mean, with their OpenID setup they were kind of ready for that

As opposed to, say, forcing downvoters to comment. People seem to love to ask for that.

Maybe on meta the question boilerplate could be about comments on downvotes

6:28 PM
I don't follow

Assuming people understand that it is weird to type the same stuff as what is in the boilerplate text

In the title?

@TravisJ don't worry, that is normal

placeholder = "Please, for the love of Cthulhu, do not ask to force downvoters to comment."

yep

6:31 PM
I just want the tags to be included in the search params... I will keep annoyingly repeating this.
@rene - Heh, who says you can't be in the same place at the same time.

@TravisJ Everyone is allowed their pet peeve
@TravisJ I dunno ....

6:45 PM
@rene - I only said that since we both sent a message here and then commented on mSO on the same answer in the same minute.

Yeah, I figured that out a bit later :)

7:08 PM
Now that's a new one. Off topic chat room. ;)

couldn't have shared the transcript?

lol
You can right click and open Incognito ;)

7:29 PM
@rene " MSO pre-filled the question I was about to ask, how did it know?"

A: MSO can read your mind.... and yes, I would also like a taco.

WTF IM TOTALLY EATING TACOS RIGHT NOW SO WEIRD

lol
Due to so many questions been too broad and unclear answerers have become reliant on being clairvoyant.

7:51 PM
I love how the comments on the vim blog post degenerated into debates about vim.

this is the only VIM I know ...
