1:05 AM
Hi folks!
@GeorgeMarian I bought that on my old iPhone, I should really re-download it.

HI MOSHAAAAAAA

@TylerChacha Recent rep changes, question upvotes are now 5 reps instead of 10

@mootinator Hi
What's up?

Sitting around with my laptop, ps3 and phone pressing buttons on them.

Cool.
I'm grappling with C#.
Note that this is C# for the desktop, not ASP.

1:17 AM
I'm having problems with jQuery !

@mootinator what kind of problems?

More of a css problem.

@mootinator okay... What?

I'm trying to show a tooltip, and it doesn't pop up where I want it to.
This is horrible, and hackish, however...
Here's my code ;)
                   _depends.parent().siblings('td').eq(1)
                    .append('<span class="ui-helper-hidden ui-corner-all ui-widget-content" style="position:absolute;">This equipment<br>requires hours for ' + _depends.val() + ' on the same ticket.</span><span class="ui-icon ui-icon-alert"></span>');
                    var _icon = _depends.parent().siblings('td').eq(1).find('.ui-icon-alert').eq(0);
                    _icon.prev().prev().width('85%');
                    var _position = _icon.position();

Q: Instead of {closed} for migrated questions, [migrated]

Factor MysticUsing [migrated] makes more sense, as the question isn't actually "closed" per se, as it still exists somewhere in the Trilogy. When I see [closed] I just mentally ignore it and move on, but there's no reason to ignore migrated questions... just follow them through to their proper site. New: E:...

\o/

1:20 AM
That's going to go in a function at some point I'm just hacking with that.

@mootinator Eh... what in the name of...

lol
Also, I don't claim to know how to write javascript which isn't ass.
People just throw me into these things and I fake it :(

@mootinator Read: api.jquery.com/jQuery, the new syntax for element creation introduced in jQuery 1.4

@YiJiang Ah, ty.

1:39 AM
@mootinator - Sorry, working on something here. Any progress?

No not really. The popup comes up relative to where the icon gets placed rather than where it moves to when I resize the input element.
The obvious solution would be to resize the input before placing the icon probably ;)
Or just leave it there always instead of having the overhead of creating/destroying it.
Yes, that would solve my problem O_o.
Filed under making things excessively difficult for myself.

1 hour later…
@YiJiang ATTACK!

3:29 AM
^--- Found something cool.

@GeorgeEdison Dear @GeorgeEdison You are awsome.
SF tee shirt
here I come!

I 'stumbled' across it.

@GeorgeEdison WOOOO

Oh, and I added cropping abilities to my FHC script.
:)
(Fixed the bug with Ask Ubuntu too.)

@GeorgeEdison awesome(r)

3:33 AM
Haven't uploaded it yet, though.

be careful buying things from the store before it's official...
it's not hooked up to inventory counts yet
so if you buy something and we run out, you might have to wait a few weeks

@JoelSpolsky :(

I'm pretty sure it will take your money though :)
3

@JoelSpolsky You mean I did find something secret?

@GeorgeEdison Dammit! Now what URL is that Store A51 proposal going to take?

3:34 AM
Cool!

That means I have to buy it before everyone else!

@YiJiang I thought of that...

i'm sure we'll get the inventory counts by monday or tuesday at the latest

That's awesome then.

until then, if you buy something, it's at your own risk (of running out)

3:35 AM
I assume they'll be some announcement when it's ready?

@JoelSpolsky I find it interesting you show up right after @GeorgeEdison brings it up

Honestly... I was just playing around with URLs when I stumbled on it :)

nothing gets by me. NOTHING. Not even Eric Raymond popping up in the parenting discussion group to talk about guns for children
YOU CAN'T HIDE FROM ME I"M USER #4!
7
mua hahaha

Fair enough. We'll leave it alone until then.

@JoelSpolsky I saw your frogbugz demonstration, it was rather funny. Too bad I'm a system administrator.

3:38 AM
thanks
you're too kind
air*kiss oh please it was nothing
AND SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS NEVER HAVE BUGS (TM)

FrogBugz? What kind of product is that? (:

@JoelSpolsky Your right I am too kind, I've got to work on that. (retry)It was horrible.

@JoelSpolsky Oh, and one more thing... if you're so good at hearing me reference it... why didn't you pop into the Ask Ubuntu general room when I mentioned it there? :)
Muhahahaha!

@GeorgeEdison Speak for yourself, I'm handing my stack exchange overloads my debit card now.
@JoelSpolsky Though I want my SF Tee in Black... and maybe a SF water bottle too?
@RebeccaChernoff I'm not sure, he skipped through the slides too fast :(

@GeorgeEdison You could delete it there since it isn't officially official yet. (;

3:42 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Sure. I'll do that.
Done.

@RebeccaChernoff Its too late, I'll redirect meta.so to it, and the world will know about it!

Wait, there's a store now? :O

@Tim: Ssssshhhhh!

waves hands There is no store.

@RebeccaChernoff I don't trust you :P
Huh, I didn't check anything on SO yesterday? Damn.

3:43 AM

@TimStone no, nothing to see here, keep moving along.. expletive There on to us!

@Jacob *backslash* escaping works I think

And like that the overlords are gone... Lets use the magic code to bring them back store.stackexchange.com

@RebeccaChernoff Hey, that hand wav- there is no hand waving - Yes ma'am

3:51 AM
@RebeccaChernoff I happen to not consider you teh overlord. Just kidding, I heard what you did to @TheMountainException

@RebeccaChernoff I'm not sure why your sighing, I just realized my weekly transfer to savings occured :( no tee shirt order for me until monday; by that point they'll be gone
super sigh
@JoelSpolsky Oh BTW you used quotes instead of an apostrophe

4:11 AM
@JoelSpolsky Joel, I'm curious, why do I pay tax?
(I live in Virginia)
oh and no it won't take my money
@GeorgeEdison Thanks you gave me a link to waste my money that doesn't even work :(

@Jacob I never claimed it worked :P

@GeorgeEdison You gave me the link, and got my hopes up though :(
That ruined my day :(

Sorry... :(

What am I going to do, I can't give Stack Exchange my money :(
@GeorgeEdison It's not your fault, I blame rchern, I bet its because I never sent her that P.F Changs gift card.

4:53 AM
Hola folks. Seems like I missed an interesting conversation...

Hola. I missed it as well.

@JesseHartwick Ah well. Do you know C#?

I could pretend to

Do you know it enough to help me with something?

@Moshe Hey, I might be able to help

4:58 AM
@Jacob - Ah, hey!

I could try, sure.
I'll always try. That's what the site is about right?

I've discussed this a few times before but here's the gist of it:
@JesseHartwick Correct. That and getting answers and voting rings.

@JesseHartwick Correct, but if you're wrong I'll be forced to down vote you :)

But seriously.
I have a website that has some URLs. Those URLs return XML, acting as endpoints for "client" programs written in various languages for various platforms.

@Jacob I'm fine with being downvoted when wrong. It's the only way I'll learn

5:00 AM
I have an iPhone app that does the same thing that I'm trying to do in C# for the Windows desktop.
@JesseHartwick, @Jacob - I have three endpoints.
(I think you know about this already, @Jacob)
The site is essentially a bunch of articles broken into "books".
Think of it as chapters.

I don't think I'm going to be much help, I'm afraid

OK.
I'm essentially dealing with arrays now, in C#.
Do either of you know how to take an array and put it into a ListView?
@JesseHartwick - Yea, I suppose this is really the question. How do I populate a ListView from an Array?

can't you just call listview.items.add within a foreach loop while iterating over your array?
i don't know if there's an easy way to load an array directly, but i'm googling as hard as i can now :P

@JesseHartwick Same here
@JesseHartwick I'm thinking that might be a decent idea

Okay, makes sense, but I've got a seperate class doing the loading of the data.
How would I raise an event when I'm done loading the data, so that my main form class can read out the downloaded data?
Do either of you know how to do delegation or event handling in C#?
is googling too
@Mehrdad - Hey, what brings you here?

5:22 AM
@JesseHartwick Incase you want the solution

@Moshe Hey, just hanging around :)

Yea, that looks like it. Testing it now.

@Moshe Is there a No Trespassing sign? :)

@Mehrdad Cool!
@Mehrdad No, just asking. :-)
What language(s) do you work with?

@Jacob: You still around?

5:28 AM
@GeorgeEdison Yes Sir

@Moshe at the moment, LaTeX, I shall say!

@GeorgeEdison - What a ruckus you were causing before. Word has it, you discovered a store!

@Jacob: Remember you said that you were looking for other open source things to host?

@Mehrdad I have never even seen it. But yea, that works. What kind of language is it?

@Moshe It doesn't work, they won't take my money!
@GeorgeEdison Yes

5:30 AM
@Moshe Never heard of TeX? Seriously?

@Jacob Ah well, I'll take it, but I'm not gibing you my SO shirt.
@Mehrdad Heard of, never seen it.
What do you use it for?

@Jacob: I was wondering about this.

@Moshe Writing papers! ...and other stuff

@Moshe BAH, ServerFault shirt or it isn't cool

@Jacob I am at home atm.
@Mehrdad I'll look into it later. (Yes @drachenstern, I will use Google for a change.)
@GeorgeEdison - Your script kinda works on iOS, care to try to get it to fully work? :P

5:32 AM
@GeorgeEdison um, what exactly does it do?
LOL

@Moshe The FHC one?

Just kidding, iOS finger motions are reserved for pinch and zoom
@GeorgeEdison Yea.

@Jacob It's a C++ application that responds to queries.

I posted a screenshot the other night. My userscript monstrosity, I mean userscript browser, shows the control panel.

@GeorgeEdison hmm, have IM(Gtalk or jabber, or ghastly AIM)?

5:33 AM
@Jacob: Given a search term, it returns questions from the dump that match the terms.

But as I said, pinch and zoom takes the fingers.
I may have a method to stop that though...

@Jacob I got Gwibber... :)

@GeorgeEdison - How would you feel about temporarily injecting meta tags on mobile browsers to stop the pinch and zoom, and then displaying a modal view or something?

But maybe we could just create a new room on here.
@Moshe That easy?
What do you mean by a modal view?

@GeorgeEdison Well I think he's talking about like a user agent check, if thats even possible

5:49 AM
@GeorgeEdison Well, you check the user agent string. If it's mobile safari, or my browser, or whatever, you inject a meta tag. Then you show a "canvas" view. Between those two, it should properly handle drawing.
@Jacob Yes, user agent string check.

I think i fit Jeff's description about a user needing suspension, agreed, anything reporting a bug in his flawless system needs the BAN HAMMER! Youre the idol of all internet moderator agreed!

@Moshe EPIC WIN

I'm bored now and can't help being a rubbernecker.

@MichaelPetrotta ?
@Jacob ?
@Moshe ?

@MichaelPetrotta Yeah, what

5:50 AM
@Bueller?

@Jacob What's the Epic win about?
@MichaelPetrotta What are you on about?

Q: Why don't we get our Reputation back after properly voting down a question?

stefanIs the reputation recalc buggy? (here) I ran it just now and got 10+ Rep back... Does it work for all questions deleted/migrated or is it somewhat random, and why doesn't it happen at decent cycles?

@Moshe A canvas view?

@GeorgeEdison Well, not a canvas tag but a canvas of sorts for drawing.

@MichaelPetrotta 1 the rep recalc link doesn't work because you can't pass that through like that

5:51 AM
@Moshe It is a canvas. A full-fledged HTML5 canvas.

Basically, if you tell Safari mobile not to pinch and zoom, it wont. So you may be able to do something with that.

@Jacob: yes, exactly.

@Moshe ...what do I use to tell it not to do that?

@MichaelPetrotta 2 the OP getting downvoted because you circumvented your meta ban

It sounds like it used to, though.
@Jacob: pardon?

5:53 AM
@GeorgeEdison I think you want to use a meta tag for that.

@MichaelPetrotta my bad thought you were the OP sorry

@Jacob: ah jeez no. :)

@GeorgeEdison This:
Except, you don't want to use 320 as the width. There's a keyword that does it for you so you can support iPhone 4 and iPad too.
@MichaelPetrotta - Do you know C#?

@Moshe: yes...

@Moshe Yup. I know that one. I use it in StackMobile.

5:56 AM
@MichaelPetrotta Great! (Let me attack you with my ferocious lack of knowledge.)
@GeorgeEdison Oh, that's yours? Cool! I wonder if you can use that for the height too.

@Moshe I don't know.
@Moshe I have the webOS SDK installed, which is extremely similar to the iPhone version of Safari.

@GeorgeEdison Try height= after the width= bit. I'll bet it works.

That'd be easy.

Cool!
@MichaelPetrotta - Is C# your main language? I'm trying to write something here and could use some help
@Jacob - btw,that link didn't work or I'm not connecting all the dots.
(prolly the second option)

@Moshe: I've got some experience in it, yes.

6:00 AM
@MichaelPetrotta Ok. As I've explained to some others before, I've got a few URLs that return data in XML format. The data is a list of books and chapters.
There are three "endpoints". The first returns a list of books, the second, a list of articles in a given book, and a third returns a given article.

@Moshe I quit you have the expert here

I am trying to put the list of books into a ListView, but I'm not having much luck.
@Jacob Sorry :P. Thanks for trying. :-)

what problems are you having?

@MichaelPetrotta - I am using a class to load the data but that class not my main Form.
I seem to be getting the data but I can't seem to "trap" the event in my main form and I can't get the data to the ListView.
I'm also not quite getting delegation. I think it's similar to iOS delegates, but am not certain.

what do you mean by "trap"? are you kicking off an asynchronous load of the data, and trying to figure out how to notify the main form when that load is complete?

6:04 AM
@MichaelPetrotta Exactly. Except more than notifying, I want to read that data in the main class.

I don't know anything about iOS delegates, unfortunately, but delegates in .NET are a lot like function pointers in C
how are you kicking off the data load? a button on the form, Form_Load, something like that?

@MichaelPetrotta I have a class that does it (right now in the constructor) and in Form1_Layout() I instantiate the said loader class.

Have you looked into BackgroundWorkers? I bet that'd do the job nicely.
Very nice wrapper around GUI worker threads, helping to avoid cross-threading issues.

@MichaelPetrotta No. I've never heard of them.
Hi @drachenstern - Thanks for your email.

I don't know if cross-threading issues exist in iOS, but in Windows, you need/really should be modifying GUI controls only on the main/GUI thread.
and bw helps a lot with that

6:09 AM
@Moshe did it make sense? I decided to revise it based on what you had told me after where I started to go ...

I just instantiate a WebClient and ask it to load.

Look them up.
You instantiate a new bw, give it a method to invoke to do all the nasty work, control is returned to the GUI.

@drachenstern It made sense, but it was ASPX and I'm using Windows Forms.

@Moshe I tried to demonstrate how to make it a CLASS sheesh
just because my framework for displaying was aspx ...

@drachenstern Sorry :( I'm so not used to .NET.

6:11 AM
@Moshe my way doesn't even need a WebClient, just a URL

The bw will invoke a RunWorkerCompleted method when the background work is complete, and optionally pass back data
Use that data to fill out your listview.
MSDN has fine examples.

@MichaelPetrotta Ok, I'll look into that, thank you.

BTW, I hate to ask this, but so many devs give me the wrong answer:
You do use the MSDN library, like, all the time, right?
It's the shizznit.

@MichaelPetrotta Whats MSDN?

@Jacob: tell me you're kidding...

6:12 AM
Before you freak, I do know what it is :)

@MichaelPetrotta :I've looked at it before, but I am not really in C# land often.

You don't need/can't read the whole thing, but as soon as you get a keyword (like BackgroundWorker), make it your first port of call

@MichaelPetrotta Thanks, hang on

@MichaelPetrotta omg, if I didn't have MSDN I would never get shit done

6:19 AM
you get shit done now?

@MichaelPetrotta no, google is my first port of call :p ... the first link is almost always MSDN. And when it's not, I try and figure out why.
@RebeccaChernoff well I'm not really productive if I'm in here all day am I? ;)
How has your Saturday been @RebeccaChernoff ?

@drachenstern: yep, same here, though I have an old-school attachment to having the library local.

I probably should have started packing before midnight, but meh. q:

@RebeccaChernoff packing?
is out of the loop apparently

6:21 AM
going to Vegas for MIX11

Also, I have a question for the chatroom: Why did I get notified as having two comment notifications if the user didn't respond to me by name? Is that a new feature? For reference, I'm the only commenter on the question proper, and the OP responded twice (one should've been an edit, skip that part :p)

yeah, new-ish feature.

well do me a favor and tell the dev team SWEETNESS or gimme the meta post where it was addresssed and I'll do that :p

Hehe. I think I added it to the RFC2SE with a link to a MSO post. Maybe.

@RebeccaChernoff delving

6:31 AM
@RebeccaChernoff I haven't even done laundry yet, and I'm off to Europe for two or so weeks on Monday, heh.

@RebeccaChernoff :( I don't see it here meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/59445/… am I in the wrong space or just blind (I know I'm blind damnit! q:)
@TimStone loser! You're not taking me with you!

@drachenstern I'm sure the people who I'm staying with will thank me for that ;)

hmm, I must've forgotten. >_<
you could add it now (:
also, not my fault. q:
tsk, tsk @Jin (:

Jin

Q: Micro-refinement to notifications for comments of others posts

MaheshIf a user comments on their own post and there is only one person who has previously commented, then that person should be notified when the author comments even if '@user' is not specified courtesy to Benjol from my closed question Notifications for comments of others posts

@Jin For shame!

6:39 AM
haha

@Jin *gasp* How could you!

I'm debating between telling y'all to paypal me lots of money or to jump off a bridge next. q:

Listening to MSDN background worker video

you should probably watch it, too

@RebeccaChernoff Well, I can send you an SE sticker, but I don't think PayPal can handle those.

6:41 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Why do one when you could do both?

LOL I don't need any stickers.

@RebeccaChernoff I'm concerned that you want to kill us all.

Oh, speaking of which, @RebeccaChernoff, I got a Rebecca-type smileyface on my SASE envelope with SE stickers and unicorn bucks. Your doing?

Haha. I don't. Just the first thing that people think of when people just do what they're told is asking the person if they'd jump off a bridge if told to.
@MichaelPetrotta Nope, but that is epic win! (:

@MichaelPetrotta She probably brainwashed them all.

6:44 AM
I am rchern. You are rchern. We are all rchern

@RebeccaChernoff Well, we don't have to listen to you if we don't wa- *hand waving* yes ma'am, right away. *proceeds to jump out window*

Unicorn bucks?

@MichaelPetrotta that does have a nice ring to it. q:

@Moshe: if you ask nicely, and send a self-addressed stamped envelope, SE will send you some stickers and unicorn money.
which are on this very laptop now.

Q: We're all Rebecca Chernoff \o/

Yi JiangOn this frabjous day, our community manager Rebecca Chernoff has graciously allowed all of us *1 to be her for one day, and one day only. And so, ladies and gentlemen, let me present to you: We're all Rebecca Chernoff \o/ A userscript dedicated to making all of you Rebecca Chernoffs. Reall...

6:46 AM
@MichaelPetrotta I got stickers and a tee, but I didn't know that the Unicorn bucks existed.

Oh wow, I never got around to doing that...I've really been terrible at accomplishing things recently, meh.

hardest part for me was tracking down stamps. think it's been months, maybe years.

@MichaelPetrotta I don't know about you, but I can't seem to find where to lick them after I bought them so instead stared at them for half an hour before searching Wikipedia for 'Stamp'

@YiJiang: haha.

My house is a black hole for stamps.
I need one, so I'll buy a set of 10 or 20.

6:48 AM
You reminded me. I need to go look up what "turn-down service" is. Someone knocked on my door saying that, but me room was already cleaned...

Then the next time, I can't find them, so I buy a set of 10 or 20.
rinse
repeat

@RebeccaChernoff Oh, well there's the problem, stamps aren't paper towels.

@RebeccaChernoff: yep. I had 39c stamps, and 41c/whatever. Never used a book up before the next price increase.

@MichaelPetrotta Now I suddenly want a mint-flavoured chocolate on my pillow.

@TimStone I thought you are suppose to rinse them before licking to ensure they're clean.

6:50 AM
Thank God for the "forever/whatever" stamps

@YiJiang Ah, in accordance with Seinfeld safety rules or something, indeed.

@MichaelPetrotta Generally turning down the sheets. A piece of mint or chocolate on the pillow. Some will do a light tidy up, maybe refresh towels. shrugs
@MichaelPetrotta yeah, those are the only ones I'll get.

Ok. This hotel is too nice for the likes of me.

I still have an uncanny knack for losing them. >_<

Hmm, my visual perception is still bugging out...I should really avoid playing a game continuously for that long in the future.

6:52 AM
@RebeccaChernoff They're like socks, except now your whole house / bedroom is the washing machine

@MichaelPetrotta It's pretty common.
