Expecting SO to become more like Facebook, but in a weird way. :/ (source: twitter.com/kristinalustig)

user315433
Also, there's a new product manager for SO Talent, Canada-based Puneet Mulchandani: SO profile‌, LinkedIn profile. The former is sparse compared to the latter... not really into dogfooding, eh?

I have put in so much effort in entertaining the internet, and yet instead of sending me a letter stating how much it is appreciated, you imposed a 12 days of Xmas partial suspension ... attempt at it anyways. Wait, it is much longer. And then, you somewhat blamed it on the stability of the system. Yeah right, your system is always 'unstable' towards some people, or certain type of people. Why are you insulting my intelligence.

user202362
Oo, looking your stability is improving - suspension went down from 2 hours to around 90 minutes to 1 hour. Mathematician would have worked out that it shall reach nil around Xmas time. Omg, as good Xmas present as gifting a fox in the chicken coop.

user202362
meanwhile, I am here because you owe me a hat - I got a gold badge & there is no hat that comes with it

1:53 AM
@Telkitty What do you mean "entertaining the Internet"? This sounds like you are not doing what is expected of you at Stack Exchange and therefore breaking the rules. You were probably suspended for doing so but since it was your first time (hopefully), the suspension was short. Oh, you got the gold badge before Winter Bash started unfortunately
Winter Bash started December 18, not 17

user315433
December 19 at 0 UTC

Then how did the Winter Bash community wiki question about how to get all the hats get posted on the 18th?

Oh my clock is different from UTC... oops

user202362
I think I got the gold badge last night

user202362

I checked already. Your gold badge on Physics SE was awarded the 17th

user202362
2:17 AM
around 873 days & 10036 views, averaging about 11.496 views per day

user202362
borderline stats

What does this mean exactly?

user202362
the question has been there for about 873 days, and there are about 10036 views, so that averages to 11.496 views per day

Which one?

user202362
the one that I got gold badge on

2:29 AM
You do know that your stats make no difference whether you get the hat or not right?

user202362
calculating back, I should have gotten the gold badge on 19th or 20th, but the conclusion based on stats is insignificant because of the standard deviation

But you got it on the 17th

user202362
if I want to hear that answer again I would have used a tape recorder, thank you

user202362
suspension usually serves a purpose

user202362
getting pleasure from other people's frustration is not one of them

user202362

I got my hats from 1) trolling meta for 30 secs & 1) be in a chat for 5 sec

4:18 AM
@Telkitty not really. scratched, sure, but they don't really bite.

4:37 AM
Utter insanity. If you're CSS is broken because you defined a shorthand property in a status class in a mixin that after being autoprefoxed results in an unintentional application of a shorthand style causing overriding of the non-status class styles, you have too much CSS, you're workflow is broken, and avoiding shorthand properties won't solve your mess.
Like why avoid margin 0 auto? Thing should have some other margin top/bottom than 0? Give Thing margin 1em auto. There's no evil in shorthand. Bugs caused directly by shorthand are purely imagined.

This message is considered on-topic??

Is there anything else I need to comment here?

Nah

Maybe downvote them a little
But that's all

Yep, the problem has been nicely avoided once again.

What problem? Avoided how? What would you do?

9:04 AM
@Bart network wide?

Sure, but over time, for maximum evilness
inb4 "People on the Tavern are plotting network-wide serial downvotes!"

Oh ... is that bad?

> The first one is a "rant aspect". I won't judge your question based on this but know that, correctly or incorrectly as it may be, a question like your is going to be seen as yet another users "crying" about getting downvoted and trying to have the votes reversed. Again, this may be not your case but know that as it is the question probably will be seen as such and downrated just for this, even if it may actually point to some valid issue.
> Also notice that this isn't valid just for your question. Any question that seem to be just a rant about the system may risk to gets its hidden value unseen if people are distracted by the rant.

@Derpy tone is always a horrible problem, particularly in online scenarios.

@Bart if someone comes and post some rude rants, claiming another user hit him with a mace.... I will edit out the rude part, but I will also go looking for that mace.

@Derpy yup. If the post amounts to "Let's discuss why all you people are a bunch of stupid fluffernutters" however, there generally is no saving.

Also, if that mace keeps being mentioned by multiple ranters, I should probably start to assume it really exists.

Not necessarily. You can still be dealing with a vocal minority for a problem which doesn't really exist. Heck even look at the tons of blog posts out there about how terrible SO is, only to read that they never really got what SO was about in the first place (which may be the actual problem)

Q: Is it possible to cook meat using starlight and multiple magnifying glasses

Theoretically, is it possible to cook a thinly sliced piece of meat using multiple powerful magnifying glasses to converge light (and thus, energy) from s...

@Telkitty there's a mythbusters episode where they try to set a wooden boat on fire using a very large mirror setup and it turned out to be really really hard, so I doubt you'll be able to cook with starlight :)

This message is considered on-topic??

@Derpy yes, why wouldn't it be on-topic?

@Derpy Not sure. I guess it could be closed as This question does not appear to seek input and discussion from the community. since it specifically asks for a moderator, but on the other hand it's answerable.

@Stijn precisely. I always assumed that the "rule" was to avoid asking for mod help on meta but to instead use the contact us link.

You can't know beforehand if the issue you have requires mods or CM's or devs?

> I want to remove a few chat messages which may cause some problem to me later. If a mod contacts me, then I would inform them the chat messages
seems pretty clear that a dev was needed.
> This is not my main account. Mods can verify it.

11:43 AM
@Derpy mods can delete chat messages

hard deletion without trace? Also, can they verify "account ownership"? That is, avoiding the issue about "if you want a message to be removed, flag the message or at least ask on the site specific meta, not on the network wide one"
But anyway, thanks. You actually provided the counter argument I was needing.
Probably what you posted was the reason the flag was declined.
Oh, well, nothing too serious to worry about. If the community wants to keep it open, keep it open.

So I can conclude I made sense?

@rene To be honest, it doesn't really make sense to me. But I can accept it made sense to whoever rejected the flag.

It is a booming business but by the looks of it, a rather dumb business ...

@rene during my last project I've developed a deep hatred for application firewalls. So many bugs and lost time and discussions because the stupid thing liked to modify HTTP headers and other things

Yeah, I can figure that.

Ooh, got the bluefeet hat @rene? You know how?

@Bart no, not really. I assumed @bluefeet felt sorry for me and awarded it ...

Ah, I see how it is ... no chance for me then

Beside some reviewing I only did three edits and left three comments. And I delete voted some stuff.
Don't see how that contributes positively to the site.

@zaq Think of all the things you'd do differently next time around.
Bet on the Cubs to win the World Series for one.

I'd never do that... (Cardinals fan)

In that case, bet the Cardinals would miss the playoffs. That might have had better longer odds to boot.

When did Stack Overflow en español graduate? They don't have a beta label (compare スタック・オーバーフロー). But I don't remember seeing an announcement, and there have been no mod elections.

user315433
Juan M just keeps appointing mods, he appointed 3 so far.

user315433
So, not API-graduated, no mod election, but have lost beta label and gained community ads. Weird.

I'm pinning @Zaid's post for a while. If any of you guys have an OBD scanner it'd be great to submit some data, or spread the word to your friends.

gonna try & get to it this weekend

MathOverflow has been on SE 2.0 platform for 48% of its lifespan (on March 22, 2017 this will become 50%). OTOH out of its 3983 users with 200+ rep, only 848 were created post-migration, that's 21%.

user315433
But this may not be very different from other sites... first half of life has more new things happening than the second half.

user315433
8:11 PM
October 12, 2012 was when SO was half its current age. Out of 328491 current 200+ rep users, 107294 were created past the midpoint. About 33%.

What did I miss here?

Just... move along.
@Zaid You mean on the survey?

@PythonMaster The roll-over label was in reference to mechanics.stackexchange.com/questions/40167, just funny timing.

@JasonC the guys over on Cross Validated ought to be interested as well. I'll try to engage their interest with a few good questions

user315433
I sometimes wonder if I should return to math.SE, but probably won't be asking this on meta. :)

because in the Dutch translation it turns into something funny

user315433
Not a joke. Translates to "No, I'm not going to run for a mod; I understood this isn't for me".

user315433
But it begins with an idiom that is not machine-translate friendly.

10:08 PM
yeah, it said something about a walker (for elderly people) that highly confused me.

@rene Oh I interpreted it as in a "dog walker", lol.
Equally confusing.

:D

user315433
walker as a person who walks.

user315433
But it's preceded by "не", indicating he's not going to walk there.

Which in context, means not running for a mod.
