I have reason to suspect that Rebecca Chernoff is actually TheTXI ...
Hahaha! But I would be very surprised if this were true.
Rebecca strikes me as much more down to earth, and more short-spoken towards all kinds of creative excursions :)
Also, I can't see her liking ponies, either.
But you never know

11:20 AM
what if the pony could turn a smile backwards? (:

@MarcGravell that would admittedly be a strong indicator

@Pekka Everybody likes ponies
2

@YiJiang yeah, but TheTXI went further than that. He embraced the essence of ponyness, so to speak. There's a difference

@Richardakacyberkiwi SO doesn't need me enough to let me in!!

VB, Excel, Access and Server in the same question, that can only end badly :(
What happened to the 'insufficient effort' close reason that Jeff mentioned on the blog? was that limited to a given site?

@YiJiang, close love here: stackoverflow.com/questions/5188999/…
And on the one I just linked above too

@Benjol that is pretty standard and clear to me...

could I also have someone to look at serverfault.com/users/73076/xeox? two answers pushing a product that his homepage is the website for.

A: "Gadhafi forces retreat" - how do you understand that?

RobustoThis is a type of ambiguous headline known as a crash blossom. From the Wikipedia link: Newspaper headlines are written in a telegraphic style (headlinese) which often omits the copula and therefore lends itself to syntactic ambiguity, usually of the garden path type. The name 'crash blossoms...

Hehehehehe

@Richardakacyberkiwi Fine, so answer it :)
@YiJiang I commented...

is anyone else having issues reaching SE sites now?

@tombull89 did you already flag them?

@TimPost Not particularly, but I'm pretty much only on SO right now

@TimPost Anyone in particular?

@Benjol just done so

12:08 PM
It's an aggregation issue

@tombull89 Out of your hands then, unless there are no SF mods around, in which case you could try pinging Marc here..

oops, forgot I'm not on a SF chat.

I'd raise it on meta, but I can't access it

@TimPost Meta's perfectly fine from here

@TimPost, works on my machine...

@Benjol I would if it were not 1.12am. Done plenty of those over at {some site} last year. excel+vba+xml is peanuts

12:12 PM
That looks like a major HSRP fail

@TimPost, I've just opened every single site in the footer, no problems

thats 2021

@tombull89 Temporary in geologic age?

@tombull89 on what site?

SF

there's also another one I saw yesterday suspended til July 19th 2038.

@SMark Ahehehehehehe :P
@tombull89 There's a lot of them; on SU and a few others there's a single 'spam' user which the mods merge all of the spammers account into to ease tracking of data

Hi! :)
@TimPost Please delete this room. It's a duplicate of The SO Tavern.

@TheOutOfStarsException OutOfStars, eh?

@tombull89 Yeah, people keep saying stuff that makes me use them all up!

12:57 PM
o.O first ever starred comment (outside of the ALL STARS room, that is).

@tombull89 Hello, Talkative badge :P

@The Renamed OutOfStars Exception

1:05 PM
Well, it was, until we all ran out...and then I think the All Starts room got deleted.

@tombull89 I cleared all stars and asked balpha to delete the room.
Though the star limit is per-room.

@Nyuszika7H Oh it is? I thought it was sitewide.

@tombull89 It's per room, yes

I could swear I didn't use 30 stars in that room...

@tombull89 Nope, only the daily vote limit is site-wide. And both limits only last until next day's midnight (UTC).
I like love that new strikethrough feature! Couldn't guessed it without looking at the revision history of @YiJiang's message!
Now we need an underline feature! Oh wait, that doesn't even work on the sites itself.

1:13 PM
it doesn't? o.O

@Benjol paged... whadya want?

@YiJiang It's the precise same issue. The edit suggestion was based on a previous revision, making it essentially a rollback

Unix THC could use some activity!

Good Morning

No underline on SE sites. Try <u>test</u> in a question, it won't be underlined. You can achieve a similiar effect with [text](http:///), though. Yes, 3 slashes.
duplicate of The SO Tavern, could you delete it?

@TimPost: and @GeorgeMarian: Hi, Good Morining

@Moshe: The good news, is that encryption class I wrote for you turns out to have passed some testing by some of the more vocal security experts on SO (Rook namely). So looks like it's good to go

@ircmaxell, you impressed Rook. I'm impressed

Good one "Petter"; you broke out an answer that's identical to another answer, except formatted incorrectly, 6 months later

uhhh, what are the chances of that

I assume he copy pasted the text, and that's how he lost the formatting. If you're going to clone another answer at least do it right

@YiJiang nice!
I should actively participate and look for badges

@YiJiang yeey
I noticed there are a lot more js and jquery questions than Python ones.

@drach I'm supposed to remind you bout a bug.

@Moshe yup

@ircmaxell - Awesome thanks!

what version am I on? 1.1.5?

3:15 PM
@drachenstern ok, done.
1.1.0 I think.
It shows in the menu in the bottom right.

I didn't think that was accurate

What is the purported bug?
. Removed .

I was having the dickens of a time getting the Ashamed Achievement.
However it appears I have it.
The only one still outstanding that I know of is Day Trader

@Moshe No problem, any time

Oh, and I hit the overflow bug again last night. Current score of -1,529,212,857 so not quite as good as the previous one (where I literally stayed at the MAX_SIGNED_INT + 1 ) but still pretty good.

3:21 PM
Heh. Does the game think it's negative? What alert do you get at the end?

Man, I still have mandarin oranges left from Chinese New Year

I have a fix for that btw, aside from using larger datatypes.

@Moshe that I owe the CU and that I lost
It does think it's negative
@Moshe testing for negative values and adding +SIGNED_MAX_INT

If it detects your UDID, it reminds you that there are greater forces than yourself, shows a picture of Jon Skeet. It shouldn't let you play.

lmao

3:25 PM
What if a player truly gets a negative score? Won't that break it?

Just round to 0

wonders if negative scores should be posted and if that's possible
@irc come to think of it, I don't think I handled zero.
Heh. That is quite an achievement.

@Moshe a truly negative score should only be possible by owing the CU

lol

@Moshe "Broke: You ended the game exactly bust." doesn't sound like much of an achievement. Maybe worth 1 point?

3:27 PM
@drachenstern do it and screenshot me :p good luck!

@Moshe "Purposeful Deceit: You only retained one dollar at the end of your month. You must have hidden the money elsewhere." for 25 points.
@Moshe do what and screenshot you what?

Score zero.
I want a screenshot.
It's possible but unlikely. You could game it by borrowing your balance on the last day, but that can be detected.

@drachenstern For a second, this made me think "what the heck version of SO is he using?!"

@PopularDemand lol
@Moshe nah, I could game it by purposely selling down on volume. It would be tricky. I'll consider doing it this weekend. I'll try and keep a log when I do, what and where.

@YiJiang Mmm. I always end up having to throw some of those out because they're so good I want to save them, and suddenly it's six months later....

3:32 PM
Ok. Thanks.

Nice, a mod stepped in there and nuked the convo without locking comments! Yay!

@ircmaxell Hmmm, where?

@ircmaxell There's no way to lock comments without locking the whole post, unfortunately

Ahhh
Well, that's good, I guess.
Oh, and to those of you who asked, the Xoom is pretty nice! the browser is RIDICULOUSLY fast (As in it feels faster than chrome on my windows computer). There are some bugs and issues, but so far I'm quite happy

Argh. Whenever I see the long form of the word 'blog written out now, I think it says "Welbogs."

3:41 PM
@ircmaxell Uh, mind help test out js garden's new mobile and table stuff? :P
I'd really like to know what sort of navigation works well on a device like that

Sure

Hang on, let me check that the one in the public dropbox is the latest version

post the link here
And I am logged in via the xoom! Gotta love tethering...

Huh, weird... oops... why did I let Computer Janitor remove dropbox-nautilus >_>

3:47 PM
@ircmaxell It's not the latest version though

yeah, there's no nav here at all

@ircmaxell Eh, by design, we hid the navigation originally for smaller screens
Mainly because I suck and can't figure out an efficient mobile navigation

@YiJiang: it looks really nice, just no nav.
There it is

and it's gone again

3:50 PM
@ircmaxell Uh... you were changing orientation?

No
just scrolling down the page
Sometimes chat force-closes the browser... Weird
did it again... sigh

are calls to foreign objects in PHP blocking or nonblocking?
Or does it depend?

define foreign objects

@ircmaxell include calls I presume?

Coworker is trying to integrate a SSO and he doesn't know if his script will continue running before getting information back from the SSO host

3:53 PM
@YiJiang: nav is there, but it doesn't switch. If I click "The Authors", it jumps correctly, but then stays as "The Authors"
@drachenstern Curl?

I'm not entirely sure. He sounds like he's not entirely sure just yet, he's trying to wrap his head around

@ircmaxell Hmmm? What do you mean by 'does not switch'?

does PHP do nonblocking calls? I'm thinking of how javascript alert()s don't block the page

@YiJiang: it stays as "The authors" no matter what

Oh, I think I know what you mean

3:53 PM
and if I scroll, it doesn't follw the scroll

Right, let me see...
@ircmaxell Well that's odd

@drachenstern It has some, but they are all in the C api
yeah, it appears some things in chrome are messed up

It worked well enough on the desktop browser

so any calls made from PHP directly should (provided I'm not trying to gum up the works) be blocking calls

@drachenstern: curl can do it via: php.net/manual/en/function.curl-multi-init.php
Ahhh @YiJiang: it does work, it just takes a while to update and appear

3:56 PM
@ircmaxell Eh, how slow?

about 2 seconds give or take to appear
and if I jump, it doesn't appear, I need to scroll after the jump for it to work

I don't want it to be nonblocking, I want the calls to be blocking. I presume they are

@drachenstern: then just do regular curl calls, it will be blocking
Most in PHP is blocking, there are some ways to do non-blocking, but you need to go out of your way to use them

Yeah, I'm not going to go out of my way (or rather, I don't think my coworker is)

2 seconds!? Okay, that can't be right. Also, the browser doesn't trigger the scroll event when you click on the link huh?
Definitely not the way the desktop browser behaves

3:57 PM
doesn't appear so
But it could be a bug in the browser here, there are a few of them (like I said, chat causes the browser to lock about 50% of the time)

I need some quick advice for the Unix Town Hall Digest:
in Town Hall Discussion, 1 min ago, by The OutOfStars Exception
There were only two final thoughts :-/
in Town Hall Discussion, 1 min ago, by The OutOfStars Exception
LOL. Do I still post that as an answer? :-/
Thoughts anyone? @Moshe, @drachenstern, @balpha, @PopularDemand or anyone else who knows what I'm talking about? :-)

Weren't both of them mine? I don't care if it's left off

in Town Hall Discussion, 3 mins ago, by The OutOfStars Exception
in Unix & Linux Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 1 hour ago, by Michael Mrozek
@RebeccaChernoff If people have more questions, I'll be around
in Town Hall Discussion, 3 mins ago, by The OutOfStars Exception
in Unix & Linux Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 1 hour ago, by Tshepang
@MichaelMrozek everyone vote for Michael
So you're biased @MichaelMrozek considering one was your answer and the other was someone campaigning for you ;-)

and I have no idea what your question is :)

Biased for keeping it, yes :). Hence why I said I'm fine with not including it

4:06 PM
@TheOutOfStarsException Huhwha? Don't leave without me! I'm awake!

@balpha do I still post those two answers as a "wrap up" to the Unix Town hall Chat Digest

pointed my coworker at some openID libs to learn more about the whole process of SSO and PHP -> webmethod callouts

in Unix & Linux Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 1 hour ago, by Michael Mrozek
I was going to vote for @balpha until he said nothing for the whole town hall. Now I'm voting for @MarcGravell instead

Or do I omit "Final thoughts" for this digest? Every other digest has final thoughts so I think include them, even if there's only two.
@balpha LOL, forgot about that one

No disrespect, but I've never paid attention to the town hall chats, so you probably shouldn't be asking my opinion, @TheOutOfStarsException.

4:08 PM
is there any value at all in putting those into the digest?
I don't see any, so I vote for no

I second that.

@PopularDemand but... but... but these digest exist so you don't have to pay attention to the town hall chats!

@TheOutOfStarsException I say leave them off, if people don't realize Mrozek is all over the network (as most of the regulars in here are) then they probably don't really have a question for him.

It feels wrong without a closer, but I blame the candidates for that ;)

@balpha I agree, there's no value, I only wanted them in there for consistency and as a wrap up. But no value, not added

4:09 PM
@TheOutOfStarsException I think in general unless at least one candidate has something constructive to say (beyond "thanks mwah you're all beautiful") then leave off Final Thoughts on that particular THC

@TimStone Maybe I'll just make up my own closer :-)

@TheOutOfStarsException I meant the content of the chats, not the actual chatrooms. I know the digests and chats aren't the same thing, but from a "how much I care about it" standpoint, they're equivalent.

OK. Thanks everyone!

@TheOutOfStarsException Just say that @RebeccaChernoff fell asleep and the Town Hall just kind of trailed off.

everybody in favor of @TheOutOfStarsException doing daily tavern digests raise your hand
15

4:09 PM
@TimStone ROFLMAO

@TheOutOfStarsException leave it hanging. That works good for movies.

@PopularDemand I think we all did ;)

@balpha I have starred to indicate that my hand is raised.
I will now be lowering my actual hand before people start giving me funny^Hier looks.

groggily raises her hand

4:10 PM
@balpha are you trying to make me lose my job? O_o
@RebeccaChernoff gee, thanks =b

@TheOutOfStarsException aren't you your own boss?

@drachenstern I had an Internet hiccup here, Mrozek's image wouldn't load and suddenly there were six stars all at once.

@PopularDemand same here

@MichaelMrozek just FYI, Jeff fell off that bull very inelegantly and shortly after that photo was taken, so I wouldn't take too much from what that guy says ;)
5

@drachenstern I am but if I had to do digests of this tavern ever day I would have to fire myself ;-)

4:11 PM
@PopularDemand Those speech bubble images take forever to onebox; I don't know why

@TheOutOfStarsException lol
wow, 9 stars already ... expecting it to get pinned shortly :p (then unpinned, then stars cleared)

@drachenstern Seriously, how many people are even here?

Everyone comes out of the woodwork and bands together when it's about making @TheOutOfStarsException's life harder
3

I'm pretty sure Tyler and Moshe aren't, so when they get back it'll be double digits

@MichaelMrozek I feel like you did it on purpose to make balpha and/or rchern and/or Marc's lives harder, then realized it would make everyone's life harder, and thought "Sweet! Bonus!" to yourself before putting the code up for production.

4:13 PM
@PopularDemand Me! Me! Me! (jumps up and down)

@YiJiang You are not a number.
Well... the first half of your name is.
But it's the wrong number.

@MichaelMrozek LOL, this is true :-D

lmao

@MichaelMrozek because your server is pretty slow

@PopularDemand Oy, heard that joke far too many times in school already

4:13 PM
ok I'm going AFK for a few ... I really need to get some code assembled this AM

@balpha How dare you. It's only the speech bubble images; normal images seem fine

@YiJiang But it's true.

@balpha Oh, snap! @MichaelMrozek are you going to take that?

@MichaelMrozek you might want to think about caching those images

YOU might want to think about downloading them faster

4:14 PM
BALPHA-MROZEK FIGHT!
2

@TheOutOfStarsException my money is on balpha of course

@PopularDemand It's not! It only has the same sound, not the same character

he can invoke rchern as a dev-mod

@TheOutOfStarsException Don't say that, they'll realize they can charge admission.

@drachenstern I'm betting on brozek

4:14 PM
@drachenstern Because he's not a dev-mod?

@MichaelMrozek have you forgotten the disposal?

@YiJiang Oh. My mistake. I thought I remembered you saying it was that yi at some point long ago. I retract my earlier statement.
@TheOutOfStarsException I'm using that word the next time I see a frat guy.

@PopularDemand ROFLMAO

@PopularDemand: I was a fraternity member. Say it to me. I dare you

@ircmaxell it

4:16 PM
@ircmaxell Whassup brozekkkkk?

sigh

@drachenstern I think that @balpha and @RebeccaChernoff should get together and engineer a garbage disposal which uses hundreds of Commander Keen robots to chop up the food.

@TheOutOfStarsException interesting proposal

@ircmaxell What's up, Broseph Lieberman?

Also note this is not me working on my code.
I am seriously going to have to close the window, and we don't want to see that happen do we?

4:17 PM
@MichaelMrozek Sadly, I have heard that one before...

@drachenstern no don't leave me here alone! These people are crazy!!!!!

@ircmaxell It's from HIMYM :). Goodbye Geraldine Ferrarbro...

@TheOutOfStarsException haha, I'll be around
Also, where's @mootinator, I miss him :p
ok, I don't need to bring that up
/lurk

@YiJiang What happened to the smooth scrolling?

@badpssockpuppet Hmmm?

That page used to scroll smoothly to the point of interest.

@YiJiang "© 2011 Microsoft"? Nice.

@badpssockpuppet You mean animated scrolling? It never had that feature

@YiJiang I could've sworn it did. Oh well.

4:21 PM
Ivo introduced it for about a day, we agreed it didn't work very well, pulled it after, I don't know, 12 hours?
It never made it to the main site, just the 'next' branch I believe

I see.
I wish the prototype section was longer and clearer
I didn't really understand it.

@drachenstern Did someone say my name?
Ah yes, it's difficult to be in this room without me, I understand.

@brotinator!

@badpssockpuppet MDC has this huge article which should clear things up a little: developer.mozilla.org/en/JavaScript/Guide/…

@badpssockpuppet MDC has this huge article which should clear things up a little: https://developer.mozilla.org/en/JavaScript/Guide/Details_of_the_Object_Model#Class-based_vs._prototype-based_languages
For some reason the link broke up in two in your message

@badpssockpuppet I don't see that

@badpssockpuppet Ah yes, those ass-based versus prototype-based languages. Always confusing.
2

4:28 PM
Although, uh, "ass-based"? :|

Link looks fine for me as well, for what it's worth.

How does the message I quoted look like however?

@badpssockpuppet Borked
@TimStone It borked up the document fragment, but the link to the document itself should be fine

Pokes @MarcGravell with large stick Really, has the line breaker developed a sense of humor?

4:33 PM
@YiJiang I'll give you three guesses how my high school registrar's computer abbreviated the "Analysis of Algorithms" class.

@PopularDemand 'Chinese Literature' didn't fare any better

Ah yes, I remember you posting that :P
