Baron first appeared in Whisper of the Heart as a statue the protagonist sees in a shop and then writes a story about

the same character appeared in a later movie that seems to have no direct plot connection with the other one.

neither time the cat is the actual protagonist, yet you are left wondering what/who he really is both times.

In the second story, he is just a character that seems to live in his own "pocket dimension" beyond the one the story takes place on. In the first... while just a character in a story book, it is pretty odd how his made-up story matches the life of another character - since the one that wrote the story in the first place shouldn't know such details...
