VIRUS!!!

i'm not saying you guys are missing out
but there's a whippet chasing a laser pointer here and it's highly entertaining

chasing whippits is always entertaining for a little while. But it gets old.

Anything gets old, after long enough.
Maybe it's just my short attention span. ;)

zombo.com never gets old. I keep expecting it to, but it doesn't.
it's the eternal website
i mean, just try linking to hampster dance

12:14 AM
That's not the first reference to that site in here. WTF is it?

or even strongbad email
folks will all be like, "woah, how retro"
but zombo.com?
it's like folks just keep discovering it for the first time, over and over and over...

BTW thanks for putting the hamster song in my head :P

do de do da do de do da da...

snaaaaake snaaaaake

even that one got old. Now that there are dancing spider cows.

12:16 AM
@nick Thanks, I was trying to avoid thinking of that one :P
Dang it UPS! Where's my package? After they tried delivering it to the wrong address yesterday, I've been a bit anxious about missing it again today.

so wait 'till late & drive to the distribution center

I've been mashing F5 on their site for the past 20 mins.

unless they added public GPS tracking to their trucks...
(yeah, wouldn't that be great? Memorize the route and intercept the driver at a light somewhere near the start of the day...)

I didn't consider driving to the pick it up myself. But that kinds defeats the purpose of shipping. :)
lol Well, if it was the regular driver, that might work, but I don't think it was.

well, granted, it takes all the fun out of sitting at home waiting for it to arrive
but you get to scope out the distribution center.

12:22 AM
You know, falling to sleep in the middle of the day is alright some times
But today, just left me too tired

Not to mention that the distribution center isn't exactly a convenient drive from my house.
@Chacha102 Depends on how long you sleep and how tried your are.

it's waking up that leaves you tired. Don't make that mistake again!

Hey @JamesMcNellis

Hey @Chacha102

This guy I'm marketing for is was too ambitious about keywords and video descriptions..
He gave me a 700 character description when there is a 250 limit

12:33 AM
Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.

Gah .. yeah that sleep really got me a headache..
CURSE YOU SLEEP! YOU'VE NEVER HURT BE BEFORE!!!!!

1:20 AM
chat

Hi

hi

1:51 AM
lol

yay...finally got my packages

2:23 AM
sure is quiet in these rooms

It comes and it goes. People are still just stumbling across the chat beta.

status-tumbleweed

On account of it being posted only on meta.

[tatus-stumbleweed]

it's up on the blog, too
shrug

2:25 AM
Oh, yah. there's that too...still how many read the blog? :)

ah, markdown formatting and everything

mini-markdown
check the faq, lower right corner
gah...getting the lovely "javascript" memory-leak lag

3:13 AM
Hello
Hows it going?

Watching Jon Stewart.
er, the Daily Show i don't think that's how his name is spelled

Jin
I have mixed feelings about Jon's chin beard

beautiful photo of an eye

Jin
i think it's shopped.

you have feelings about Jon's chin beard?

Jin
3:23 AM
it looks weird.

yah, i dunno what i think about it...though i'm getting used to it
@Shog9 lol BTW

in the low-def, half-asleep environment I watch that show in, it's barely visible...

@Chacha102 Yah, that photo is pretty cool.

that photo...

3:28 AM
I just know someone will down vote me for that..

anyone remember brittle-bones.com?

@Chacha102 Maybe more than 1 word answer...

@GeorgeMarian But it answers his question!

i.e. No, not in existing comments.
(i didn't know that was the case, though)
Well, it will change it for future comments.
oh..nvm..i should read the whole question first

there. More than 1 word.

3:30 AM
lol...the revised version is even worse

You wanted more than 1 word...

I'd go with "No. It will not."

Edited.

You're the one worried about being downvoted...on meta :P

there
I like Shogs better...

3:32 AM
lol
nice

@Shog9 Could you make it a little crazier? More Welboggy?

commented

No. I'm not Welbog, and refuse to write like him.

Like if that was a 3, maybe make it a 5?

Q: What do Stack Overflow users like for breakfast?

Chacha102Breakfast, as I'm sure we all know, is the most important meal of the day. Meals being a topic near and dear to the heart of every Real Programmer, this seems like a perfect question to weed out the fake, imitation programmers... So, please respond with your favorite morning meal. If someone has...

that was funny..

i was hungry...

3:34 AM
lol

@Shog9 LOL "yet another collapse of the Romanian economy."
You may have gone overboard with the cigar buying, when you can't fit 'em in your humidors.

You know, me creating channels will eventually get these guys to either put a cap on channel creation, or make a script that cleans up old unused channels..

heh
that's what the beta is for...

or stop me from creating channels
I don't like the last one

3:44 AM
So lets hope for one of the first two
Apparently the rooms list is paged
it just doesn't have pages..

ooops
heh...no hotlinking

grr
I'll be making an app on my server specifically to combat that
it will download the image, and give me the new URL on my server
Gah, the news is all about Google Wave Today
"Google Wave and Network Effects"
"Shouldn't We Be Celebrating Google's Failures?"
"Why didn't Google Wave Boot Up?"
Enough with the Wave Already..

of course a day or two ago, it was all about Prop 8
can't there just be a day where everyone writes something interesting instead of hopping off the latest big news

I blame Prop 8 for the failure of Google Wave

3:59 AM
Amen to that..

or the failure of Prop 8 for the failure of Google Wave
whichever one was in the news most recently
also, what's prop 8?

DANG IT

I blame Google trying to catch the facetwitspace train for the failure of Wave.

Why is Shift-A so close to Shift-S...
Shift-S = Share Current Article

4:00 AM
Shift - A = Mark all Items Read, No Confirmation.

I suspect they put both of those shift keys next to each other on purpose, just to mess with people

I guess now I have to read Hacker News

it's when you find yourself spending entirely too much of your time trying to make out what the invisible people just out of earshot are saying... that it's time to think seriously about getting some sleep. Those people are boring and repetitive, and you should know better than to listen to them.

"Whereoscope" is a tracking service for kids. It runs a background app on iPhones and will tell you where your kid is. The only problem, you have to buy you and your kid an iPhone 4.
Good luck with that..
Are there 'quotes' in chat?
It would be nice if I could put some sort of blockquote in here for posting in news stories or stuff
meh, I guess

4:26 AM
oh...

Why is there no interesting news today..
Who is @TomatoSandwich

> What an insincere pilot of shit. I have two reasons to hate Dinner for Schmucks, but one of them is a hell of a lot more offensive than the other. The more egregious of the movie's problems really pissed me off.

how did you do that?

>
> but, it's gotta be at the start of the post, and no un-careted newlines

otherwise, no luck

hmm
is it space > space
nothing > space
or nothing > nothing

4:31 AM
no newlines at all
>[space]text
> the quick brown foxes jumped over the lazy dogs
> now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country

> This is a test
> Whereoscope consists of an iPhone application that runs in the background (you’ll need iOS 4, which enabled background apps). During an initial setup process, you designate a handful of key locations, or geofences, that your children often visit — their school, home, a best friend’s house, etc. You can elect to receive a push notification whenever your child leaves or arrives at one of these areas.
There we go
w/e. I'm guessing I can't paste that full thing it

Q: "Post Your *" buttons - why no hover effect(s)?

I think we need more text-shadow..

i need to get a life...

Welcome to the club
I need to develop a better reading pattern
I need to read more books
but I find it incredibly annoying to remember to sit down and read a book

plus, I've read most of the top books on the SO suggestion list, and I'm trying to find a place to go from there

4:47 AM
Oh? where is this list?
What kind of books are you interested in reading? Tech? Classics? Instant Classics?

972
Q: What is the single most influential book every programmer should read?

NotMyselfIf you could go back in time and tell yourself to read a specific book at the beginning of your career as a developer, which book would it be? I expect this list to be varied and to cover a wide range of things. For me, the book would be Code Complete. After reading that book, I was able to get ...

Q: List of freely available programming books

KaranI'm trying to amass a list of programming books with opensource licenses, like Creative Commons, GPL, etc. The books can be about a particular programming language or about computers in general. What are some freely available programming books?

My reading list is a mile long. I've barely made a dent in it.

Code Complete 2, Don't Make Me Think, Design Patterns, The Pragmatic Programmer
Tribes
Purple Cow
I'm working on Relevance, Permission Marketing
A site point book about Freelancing
Also, I've Read Strunk & White Elements of Style
2

Nice, most of those books are already on my list, or I already own them. Though, some of are still in box waiting for my dad to ship 'em to me. =/

The World is Flat and Hot, Flat and Crowded

4:50 AM
mythical man month is pretty good

Once I finish these I'd like to go more into books about journalism and photography

feels like he has been procrastinating the night before the term paper is due

Code Complete 2 is a monster

I blame SO.
@Chacha102 I don't remember if I've bought that yet, but it's certainly on the list.
There's a nice project estimation book (also in the MS series) which is pretty good.

biographies are great. i like historical and science figures the best. stay away from autobiographies in general.

4:53 AM
I really like my blog
I have a section in it called shares
that I share virtually everything and anything

and I have a nice 'Share This' bookmarklet I made to automatically make a new post with the Post Title and URL

Ah, there we go. It is oneboxed.

I'm really not into science..
I think it was my teachers that ruined it for me

Oh, nice...timeout notifcation.
@Chacha102 what are some good tags for your blog?

4:56 AM
tags?
I like to think I focus on tech news, with some design links thrown in

yah, for delicious, so i can forget to remember to read it ;)

That is my shares
my blog is more on Tech and Programming
and I have so just general life stuff thrown in there

would webdev be a suitable tag?

yes
last night I wrote the most cliche blog post ever
Basically it was about seizing the day and Carpe Diem and all that

cool, there's a better chance i'll come back to it then lol
been meaning to go through my delicious and peel out the blogs into google reader/feedly

4:59 AM
I used to use feedly
Hey @Dexter

I don't use it enough, but that's because I still haven't really populated google reader with enough feeds

anyway, I'm going to go try to read some more

@Chacha102 what reader do you use now?

talk to you all tomorrow

c'ya @Chacha102
heh...that timeout notification was a false-positive

8 hours later…
12:39 PM
barkeep! hit me up with a brewski please.

the problem is, there's not much going on in this bar
except a load of ghosts

love the layout here for reading json: json.parser.online.fr
wish chrome had the json tab that firebug does in the resource tab

@NickCraver yeah, me too. I used to use json viewer for Windows, but I stick to online stuff mostly. That one is pretty nice.
(bookmarked)
@Nick: playing around with it, I think I have a new favourite.

the coloring gets me

I would love something like this, integrated to legacy IRC servers... so people could use the web client (which looks nice) or any standard IRC client

12:53 PM
agreed, the current web clients leave much to be desired
:54923 am I the only one who things this reply arrow looks weird?
am I the only one who things this reply arrow looks weird?
ah doesn't work correctly on your own

it's a bit weird, yes - not too bad though
test reply

seems upside down

something like "re:" might work

@Android, if you scroll up far enough in Chat feedback, you'll see it started out life as "replied:"
which got shot down in flames by Jeff :)
he didn't like the arrow much either - the arrow is only for 'explicit' replies (via the gutter), and indicate that the post is (probably) not in response to the most recent message
implicit replies are created when you do a @Name - but they don't work 100%yet

1:18 PM
The OP has 4k+ rep, did they now think this would be closed instantly? stackoverflow.com/questions/3424062/…

Q: Why does foreach in C# behave this way?

codymanixlong[] b = new long[1]; int i1 = b[0]; // compile error as it should // no warning at all, large values gets converted to negative values silently foreach (int i2 in b) { } class Customer : Person{} Person[]p = new Person[]{mypers}; // no warning at all, throws typecastexception at runtime fo...

Title was "why does foreach in c#suck so much?" before the 5 min edit window

Is anyone else noticing wild fluctuations in the numbers of questions with a particular tag?
The #Rest tag was at 1750ish yesterday, now in one place it says 2027 and another it says 2253!

@Darrel - confirmed

@Nick, glad I'm not going crazy :-)

rest tag here shows 2253: stackoverflow.com/tags
i'd throw up a meta question

anybody familiar with cisco IOS

Q: Detect if currently scrolling a web page on Android

Adam HeathI am trying to detect when a user has finished scrolling a web page using javascript on Android. The script I have is working on iPhone and seems correct to me that it should work on Android. Anyway, a snippet: previous = pageYOffset; interval = setInterval(function() { //Has scrolling stopp...

3:05 PM
Good Morning All

Er... afternoon :)

Mornin' folks

Good Morning

good morning

Today I get to make a script to transfer (Some CMS) Posts to Wordpress Posts

3:11 PM
Soon as I wake up, bam! The cat's in my face, mewing for wet food.

Today I get to pack the car full of boxes and start moving.
lol
i don't care what the Family Guy says, dilbert rocks

@Chacha102: why is your name in italics?

I'm the channel owner

ah I see

3:37 PM
You own your own tavern?! Wow.

I got a sweet deal on it too

Awesome. You know property values are about to plummet in this area though, right?

It came with 2 cows, 5 barrels of beer, and a full basement of vintage wine

You had to provide your own bread?

Well, I am a baker too

3:38 PM
I would like to subscribe to your newsletter. Just for the lunch special coupons.

Baker, Programmer, and Tavern Keeper
Sorry, I only have a newsletter for both Dinner and Lunch Special Coupons

Hm... reduce beats recycle, but reuse beats reduce. Okay, I'll take it!
Wait, no, they all point at each other.
Wait, what?

Today we're having a special on bread. 2 Loaves for 1 Bottle of Wine
(Need to keep the cellar stocked)
Welcome to the Tavern @devinb and @Benjol Can I get you some bread and coffee?

Just browsing, thanks.
I'm offended by your high-pressure sales tactics. I'd like to speak to your manager, or the proprietor.
or the owner.
please.

Just popping through, looking to see if there's anyone here who should be starring my post over in Chat feedback :)

3:44 PM
Is it just me, or is Meta unusually quiet today?

I am the owner, and the proprietor, and the manager.

@devinb, I think he's all three :)

Oh
Well. Tell the proprietor that the manager was rude to me.

Does management reserve the right to refuse service for any reason?

Yes, and more

3:45 PM
I refuse to be refused service
@pop, methinks you're right.
But that means I'll get more work done today.

So... you're ordering "criminal trespass" with a side of "disorderly conduct"?

I dunno. I think all us complainers in California haven't woken up yet.

@devin thanks for confirming.

I would never be disorderly. I'll give you three reasons why.
2. I'm too smart for that.
3. Organization is next to godliness
1. It's disrespectufl to those around me.

@PopularDemand: Maybe it'll heat up in the afternoon. It is Friday, after all.

3:47 PM
dude... you can reply??

/howto?

Um... yes?

right click on a message
or the arrow
and click reply near the top

methinks I found it

3:48 PM
as did I

Oh, I made a De-motivation Room the Other Day.

I saw those but thought people had typed them in themselves. The reply arrows, that is.

@devinb: That would be why @Benjol popped in and asked us to star his explanation of the reply system. :)

(I've never used Twitter.)

3:49 PM
(I assume this is Jeff's response to that "make chat replies Twitterlike" comment.)

I already told this to feedback, but it needs a better icon
I like the new Stackexchange.com

4:08 PM
Time to get back to my project I guess, though I'd much rather just hang out here and drink beer for the rest of the night
Perhaps I should try to combine the two, there's a thought

Dual monitors FTW

Triple Monitors Here

Looks like it might take a while to upgrade my linux installation, time to do the dishes then

I think I'll go read a book soon

Q: bla-sdk what should we do here?

wafflesJeff and I cleared the entire synonym merge queue (~150 merges/nukes). http://stackoverflow.com/tags/synonyms?tab=newest&filter=merge All that is left is: iphone-sdk -> iphone And: android-sdk -> android I know this is a dupe, I don't care, it needs more attention and a bounty ...

4:11 PM
Nice, a 3x monitor setup is a goal of mine. Right now, getting a 2nd of my own is the first goal.

Hm, what's the point of a question during upgrade that says "Continue without installing GRUB?" when answering No just prompts again? Why not say "Press OK to install GRUB"?

@LasseVKarlsen I guess to allow people who know grub2 is going to completely hose their mutiboot setup the ability to ctrl-c, while strongly suggesting to 'just do it' to everyone else

Hm, OK, still, a strange question if the only valid real response is YES, it should've been phrased more like "If you know what you're doing, answer NO here", and then default to YES
This is a common tactic to force people to read the question, if you just ask again if they leave it at default
Hm, for some reason this ubuntu machine didn't have Litmus installed, why did I have it lying around then?

heh
'cause storage is cheap?

Must be
Though I don't remember what I used this for then if I didn't use it for this project
If I had used it for this project, it would've had Litmus installed

4:17 PM
Ah, that's a different question.

I once accidentally installed the "Virtual RMS" by thinking it was a battleship game. Don't ask me how.

Ho hum, it doesn't have the C compiler either
You installed a virtual Richard Stallman? Whatever for? :)

@TimPost LOL

All I wanted to do was sink a battleship. Instead, it basically called me unethical and nearly implied that my parents were not married.

me heads off to google
oic

4:38 PM
could someone that's not registered on the New York Times website check this out for me: query.nytimes.com/gst/…
click on "view full article" does it require registration?

Checking

"view full article" does not require registration

It pointed to a pdf, did not ask for any registration
Ah, from 1905

ok, thanks...that's what i thought

Yes, I guess they were a bit short on HTML-editors back then so a PDF of a scanned page makes sense :)

4:41 PM
yah, i posted it in a question on finance and someone downvoted me for the reg requirement lol
@LasseVKarlsen LOL At least it's not a scan of a picture of a print out of the original ;)

@GeorgeMarian How do you know? ;)

'evening

mornin'

'noon

4:49 PM
'mid-noon

wouldn't that be closer to 3/4's past noon?
@LasseVKarlsen Oh, because they're no table in the background. :D
