SO seems strange to me these days.
Like people don't seem to be motivated to answer questions beyond very basic debugging stuff any more. I could be projecting. But it also looks like the general skill level of askers has dropped since the last time I hung out there, too. Like it's too big for its own good.

user202362
my thesis was on data mining more than 10 years ago

The unanswered questions count seems higher than I remember too.
And there's a lot of really aggressive comments.
It could also be that I only really look at c++ and java, but the focus is moved more towards newer technologies.

@JamesENL what you mean "my new show"? Is it on TV?

@ShadowWizard My new musical :)

4:26 AM
@JamesENL nice.. where can we see it live? ;)

@ShadowWizard You'll have to come to Western Australia I'm afraid. It's just community theatre

lol, Google is smart

user202362
good luck :)

@JamesENL how much it cost?

$25

4:28 AM
too much. Not coming. :P
@James so you have a side job as actor?

God no it's just a hobby
It's all unpaid

So where does the money go? Theatre? Or charity?

The money goes to the theatre

Musical theatre!

@JamesENL so isn't it bit unfair? I would expect such thing to go to charity, if anything... unless that theatre really need the money e.g. going to close without it?

4:33 AM
It's the theatre that hosts the production. It's subsidised by arts grants, but the theatre still has running costs

@JamesENL hmm...

This is totally normal. It's how such things are always done.

user202362
@ShadowWizard If the building that theatre is in doesn't make profit, it will be converted to apartments (in extreme cases). Plenty of petrol stations and golf courses have already been in Sydney. Welcome to capitalist world

4:48 AM
@tchrist dunno, I just imagine the money goes to the manager's pocket, and the manager being happy for finding cheap employees. Maybe it's just me being pessimistic though. :/
Guess it also depends how much "ordinary" show costs? @James

@ShadowWizard Nah, the show gets a smallish budget for props and set. The lighting guy gets paid, but everyone else is donating their time. Also take into account that we are using the theatre space for like 4 months before the show to rehearse. That adds up because they can't hire those spaces out to other people

@JamesENL oh well, you win. But I still won't pay! :D
How many people arrive to your shows usually? Or will it be your first?

This is my 4th show

Oh, nice!

Theatre can seat about 150 people, but we usually don't sell out
8 shows
over 3 weeks

@JamesENL Community theatre #highfive. I used to do some acting as a hobby with kwlt.org before moving down to NYC. Totally get where you're coming from re: costs, theatre space, etc. We at least owned the building itself, although when I joined up, it was being restored after a fire.
(Well, still own it, I suppose, I'm just no longer there, but you get the idea.)

Me neither, my director told me that my acting while I'm singing is great, can't be faulted. When I'm not singing......

AFAIK I can hold my own... when I'm not singing. :)
Unless the point is to sing off key. In which case, I'm on that.

@Adam but since SE allows working from home, why won't you move back to your old place where you can keep that hobby?

@ShadowWizard I like NYC, for one. My wife is American, which makes just randomly moving back to Canada more challenging for another. There are benefits to working from an office for third. There's lots of variables, and we haven't even got to saving up the $$$ for the move. ;)

10:30 AM
Doxing (from dox, abbreviation of documents), or doxxing, is the Internet-based practice of researching and broadcasting private or identifiable information (especially personally identifiable information) about an individual or organization. The methods employed to acquire this information include searching publicly available databases and social media websites (like Facebook), hacking, and social engineering. It is closely related to internet vigilantism and hacktivism. Doxing may be carried out for various reasons, including to aid law enforcement, business analysis, extortion, coercion,...

That's interesting.

yes
both are only snagged from the pool lazily, so whether we use the read-only connection or the live connection is up to the page

Oh.

or neither, or both

I imagine for stuff like the user's profile and activity pages, where you don't need to change anything, read-only is fine.

exactly; and any query that could be expensive but where it is ok to be 4 milliseconds out of date, etc

I recently got into apache/js/html/php doing some stuff on my company's internal webapp, and I only now realize how much of a cluster**** that is. Do you guys keep track of all of it all the time?

well, I don't know much about apache or php, but yes: we have a working knowledge of the end-to-end state
we don't usually separate by role - we separate by feature

Isn't that like a metric ton of different stuff

yes

12:18 PM
Nice afternoon to you :3

we do have some specialism - many people are much much better at js than me, and my UI design is a joke - but I'm pretty good at gnarly server-side performance stuff, for example
but usually any person can work on any feature without prejudice
gotta run

@Telkitty In regards to that anonymous mod message question - You're in kind of a privileged position here, running your own company. Many, many big companies and even mid sized ones will rather can a developer on complaint than discuss it with them - thats why doxxing is so dangerous

Hi @AaronHall hi @Bart

@Magisch hi!

1:11 PM
It makes me sad to see the community passionate about an aspect of Stack Exchange only to find that the discussion is closed because the community wants to talk about it too much. I'm sure the decision has already been made and the implementation is the only thing left to decide, but shutting the community out is so very disappointing. I guess it really shouldn't be surprising, then, when individual members of the community lash out at moderators and other individuals.
Treat your community like children long enough and soon that's all your community will consist of.
3

@AdamDavis what exactly are we talking about?

user202362
obviously about turning this site into a kindergarten or turning it into a pedobears heaven

user202362
I don't really have any animosity against moderators, just their claims that there were personal attacks that kind of annoyed me

user202362
Do you know how many personal attack messages I used to have during my period on other forum? Hundreds each month.

@Telkitty Why should volunteers be subject to any if it can be avoided without losing anything siginificant?

user202362
1:26 PM
Range from sexist comments to murder intend to rape. One even write a very detailed description on how he intended to carry out hannibal operations on me (then he got banned, but he ended up hacking the forum)

user202362
I don't remember I offended half of those internet mobs

Thats all nice, but in what was does that affect what this is about?

user202362
mostly because if I don't find someone interesting, I generally do not reply to their messages

user202362
@Magisch this is the internet

No personal attacks are better then some, even if they can be ignored
Thats an excuse to be shitty to people

user202362
1:28 PM
I don't have the habit of ignoring people, although sometimes I do

this site is one of the nicer places on the internet

user202362
My point is that this is how internet operates

user202362
you should know what you are getting into

user202362
there is action and reaction

user202362
very simple

1:31 PM
Thats an excuse

user202362
so you accept fake friendness

"You should know what you're getting into" does not preclude taking precautions against negative fallout

@Telkitty how was that quote ? The reason people living in civil communities get to act as the bad people they are is that they don't have to fear have their head crushed by a wooden club?

I don't act openly hostile against anyone, because that is not how I'd like to be treated

user202362
like I said, there is action and reaction, cause and effect

1:33 PM
Over the years as mod on wow pservers and various minecraft servers and on the mc forums, I've had more death threats then I can count

@Telkitty actually, there is just you, the others and... how much you are willing to care.

Just because some people really like lashing out at the first guy to stand in their way ever so slightly

user202362
you can't change the internet just like communism is a great idea that would not work out

Obviously not
But you can make it slightly less crap by taking some reasonable precautions
I can't think of a single use case where knowing which mod did you in would do you any favors
unless, of course, you wanted to harass them over it
None of the many ways to appeal a decision even need that information to begin with, is my point

user202362
If someone think (s)he is wronged, and see whoever wronged him/her has his/her social network details next to the profile, at the height of his/her rage, there is a very high probability that (s)he will personally attack those pages. To me, this is as natural as water will flow from high to low place.

1:39 PM
right. so don't show that info then

user202362
right, tell that to the mods

I mean don't show who issued the ban
These people are only digging their own graves anyways. Threatening or harassing a mod on social media turns what would probably have been like a 5 day suspension into a no-questions-asked perma ban with zero chance of ever returning

user202362
those people have no life

user202362
also who wants responsibility without power

user202362
if one can have power without responsibility, it's even better

1:42 PM
There is no reduction in respobsility due to not showing who banned
the ways of recourse and accountability are the same

user202362
but mods don't want accountability

Whether it was bolt or martin that canned you has no bearing on why it is you were canned

user202362
?

Thats a bold thing to say in the by far most accountable community on the web

user202362
I don't care, I am just stating my view. At least I am not a coward who hides behind a wall.

1:46 PM
So you think taking precautions against being harassed is cowardly?

user202362
why would there be harassment to start with?

user202362
do you go around harass any random person?

it's not about you or me or magisch
it's about users that actually do that

@Telkitty No, I wouldn't. But some people are just that dense or that malicious that they would

because there is users that harrass people on the internet. There's ample evidence of that in posts here on MSE

user202362
1:47 PM
also when you have MANY people harassing the mods, it begs the question: why?

and harrassment is never okay

If I got banned tomorrow and saw who did it none of my trains of thought would be "How about I really bother they guy that did this?"

@Telkitty nobody said it were many..

@Telkitty One dedicated enough person doing it can have a strong, long lasting negative impact on that

user202362
there were a couple of mods saying they were harassed by multiple people

1:48 PM

user202362
I would like to see how many personal attacks Joel Spolsky or Jeff Atwood get in the past 12 months comparing to say, Brad Larson on their social network pages/websites. If Brad got more, I win. If Joel got more, you win. How is that?

1:53 PM
@Nzall Not specific rules besides dimensions for a good fit. that said, something obviously offensive or harmful isn't acceptable

Let me make it clear: the following image: can I use it as an avatar?

@Telkitty huh?? I don't quite understand what the point you're trying to make with that is ...

I don't see why you wouldn't be allowed to use that ...

user202362
@Vogel612'sShadow causality

@Telkitty Joel is not the guy who has to deal with the idiots on SE. Brad is

Because people in The Bridge were (probably jokingly) saying that it would be flagged

idiot is a subjective term, data don't lie

Thats an unfair comparison though

I don't see how harrassment on social media profiles is relevant
harrassment can also happen on SE and through other media

Joel meets investors and customers, he's the ceo. He has no point of contact with the underbelly of SO

1:56 PM
aside from that Joel has a huge social media presence, in part thanks to his blog

Moderators deal with the users that contain most of the people who would be willing to harass people unfairly

bottom-line: the results are skewed, even if the data would be remotely meaningful

I am done with this discussion. I have already said that I have to say, I let you to figure out the missing links :p

-.-
@Telkitty let me say one thing about your premise... in the beginning of this chat discussion (as far as I read back that is) you said "That's how the internet operates [...] there is action and reaction".
I'm saying that this should not be how the internet operates
and the whole idea of making moderators a free target to shoot at is wrong
just because people moderate the site, that doesn't mean they should be free game. Quite the contrary

Keep in mind all of our mods do this entirely for free

2:04 PM
of course moderators should be fair game. But harrassment and ad-hominem attacks are not fair game

Can anyone here help me out? Time related SE questions. Should they be updated so that their answers become invalid years later?
Part of the idea of Stack Exchange sites is that their information stays up-to-date (that’s why questions and answers are always editable). You can ask about a specific time period, but with this question I don’t see a need to make it so temporally specific (although of course, I’m not a Time Lord). — Paul D. Waite 1 min ago
^ I do not agree with this commenter.

Where is "too localized" when you need it? :p

@Bart haha. Well it was relevant to the time. Questions are allowed in that state

I don't particularly see the point in keeping that post locked to a specific period though. Unless that period has some unique relevance.
Then again, I also wonder if it's a good question to begin with, but that's up to that community to decide.

@Bart But for me to change my answer 4 years later?
at the time, the answer I chose was correct. I feel like the mod is just playing around with his mod powers (along with changing the title of my post multiple times)

Well, that initial title isn't really great, now is it?
A title should at least convey something about the question you're going to ask. "Bad Wolf (Blaidd Drwg)" doesn't really do that.

2:41 PM
It is about Bad Wolf. and the tags said doctor-who
it was all there

for reference ... the mod involved edited the title to:
> Have the words "Bad Wolf" shown up since the Tennant era?

Okay. I'll ask a question on SO titled "Operators" and tag it C++. That should suffice

@Vogel612'sShadow Yep. And my question had nothing to do with David Tenant
@Bart That is fine with me :-)

Don't make me slap you :p

@Bart at this point I'm waiting for a humungous burning teddybear to show up ...

2:43 PM
@Bart my highest upvoted SO question has no question mark in the title stackoverflow.com/q/5874652/561731 and I have insisted it stay that way over the years

And it's a terrible title

@Bart Maybe. but in the end the question evolved so that it is not even jquery related anymore, it is the difference between a javascript property vs attribute in the DOM

That still doesn't improve or justify the title.

I don't really think the moderator overstepped any boundaries with the edit. If "Tenant era" is irrelevant, you can always adapt to another indication of time frame. And you're under no obligation to change you accepted answer of course.

2:47 PM
@Bart Thank you. idk he was kinda insisting i change my accepted answer in other comments...

He can insist until he's blue in the face. That's up to you

If the moderator however is blue in the feet, you better listen. :p

@Bart haha, what?

@Bart if he is blue in the face he probably isn't a mod but just a Cutie Mark Crusader.
