5:00 AM
building...

I never heard back if the XMPP bridge qualifies for listing on StackApps. @RebeccaChernoff or @JeffAtwood, thoughts?

Ok, booting laptop

@JeffAtwood, there are some on there already, they're just listed under [app] since they needed a required tag.

@JeffAtwood on it. Done.

Hmm, @Jin is going to break my winning streak, damn. I should have held off starting a new match until I finished these other games. ;)

5:02 AM
Oy. I can't even keep up with WwF, why would you want to distract me more with your silly games?!

@RebeccaChernoff They're awesome?

ok one sec have to build again

@JeffAtwood it's ok, forming my post in the first part to get something up there.

> If you've created an application or library/wrapper for use on the Stack Exchange network, that's fantastic!
@TheRenamedException you tell me.

5:06 AM
Sounds like a "yes" to me :-)

@RebeccaChernoff but it doesn't use the api :\

I guess scripts don't get to have the app store feeling. Oh well! At least that tab is currently mine. All mine.

@RebeccaChernoff I'll post the XMPP bridge tomorrow. Thanks!
Goodnight everyone

@badp I'm working on that :p

@drachenstern where did I say "uses the api" there? Did you forget our talk about this earlier? (;

5:07 AM
@badp Put on your diamond hat and claim the hill.

@JeffAtwood that is so cool :)

@RebeccaChernoff I did not, and I'm glad for your clarification earlier. I was just voicing the recurring complaint ;)

I think we'll make it use the same template as libraries and apps, so you can use the same format
that just isn't in quite yet

@drachenstern Well, the whole idea is to get rid of the complaint/confusion @drachenstern.

@RebeccaChernoff ;) :p

5:09 AM
ok so I updated /faq and all the new user alerts on stackapps to make it clear that we allow scripts there
I guess I'll start emailing all the meta question owners.. for people that posted scripts on meta.so

stackapps.com/tags/script/info ← 2 free reps! get 'em!

@JeffAtwood I actually tried to log in in inconito mode in chrome (no extensions) and still no working, I will try a little harder to figure out whats happening and post it on meta if not... thanks anyway

@JeffAtwood if my script (= non standalone application) uses the API it's still a script I guess?

5:10 AM
?

I see redundancy @badp!

@RebeccaChernoff Not really...

that's up to you.. in my opinion, things that run as "add-ons" in the browser to enhance the site rather than replace the UI entirely are scripts

@JeffAtwood A script it is then.

Hmm, apparently my state is one of the lowest wireless taxers. Hooray.

5:12 AM
The way I see it: are things you use outside of SE sites themselves and are things you use in your browser while you're on a SE site.

More relatedly, I guess this means I should get on those userscript updates...

@JeffAtwood There's also and - lots of overlap with but there are some that don't overlap.

@RebeccaChernoff tag syntax doesn't work cross site.

I seem to have misplaced the size for the thumbnail?

144x119 off the top of my head, sec.

5:14 AM
Thumbnails should be 144 pixels wide, and 119 pixels tall and a PNG file (with extension). If no
found it

so now that we're in definition phase

Q: Bring back pixelation! (a how-to)

badpHere's a user CSS file by myself to bring more pixelation awesomeness to Gaming. Chrome users can enjoy it with Personalized Web, use the following as the match URL: ^http://(meta\.)?gaming\.stackexchange\.com/.* There is a similar extension for Firefox and a built in tool for Opera users. Q: SO-Site Bar (Minimalistic)

Jonathan SampsonDownload Source: http://www.sampsonresume.com/labs/so-sites_minimal.user.js Description Greasemonkey script for linking the SO-Sites together. Jeff rightly pointed out that a mere clone of the footer-list takes up a bit too much space, so I thought this would eliminate that problem, or at leas...

that seems obsolete in the face of the multi-collider super-dropdown

Well regardless of the fact that @badp had two there ahead of me :p

Q: A way to keep the "user bar" on the top of the site stuck there ~ StickyBar

drachenstern Screenshot / Code Snippet About Since people keep asking for a way to stick the userbar at the top of the screen, I'm working on a userscript to do so. Because of the way each site is fashioned and themed, various elements are in different places. So there are some parts that don't work ...

@drachenstern Taxonomist is SO Mine!

@badp haha!
I've got an idea for one other userscript, so I'm only in for two atm
First I need to get this one in good shape. And as is I already said I was going to bed 30 minutes ago

5:20 AM
bed is for wusses

Jin
what's a bed?
2

@JeffAtwood except I can't convince you to write me paychecks so :\ :p (bah @ asking in the first place)

@Jin I've heard it's something you sleep in, but I'm not sure what that means either.

[besides he has my email address if he really wanted to!]
@TimStone it's that thing that you sometimes find yourself doing in your office chair

Ah, downtime.

5:22 AM
haha, thereyago

@drachenstern haha

To be fair (to me), I don't think I've fallen asleep in my chair in a while. I have unexpectedly found myself waking up several times though. Never been sure how that happens.

> to be fair to Tim
does not compute.

You might have an error in your language processing routine then. :P

Jin
i'm a polyphasic sleeper
Polyphasic sleep, a term coined by early 20th-century psychologist J.S. Szymanski, refers to the practice of sleeping multiple times in a 24-hour period—usually more than two, in contrast to biphasic sleep (twice per day) or monophasic sleep (once per day). It does not imply any particular sleep schedule. The circadian rhythm disorder known as irregular sleep-wake syndrome is an example of polyphasic sleep in humans. Polyphasic sleep is common in many animals, and is believed to be the ancestral sleep state. The term polyphasic sleep, or often Uberman's sleep schedule, is also used by an on...

5:25 AM
Good night to all!

i'm on a deadline

@Trufa G'night

So when will the template be applied to scripts for displaying? I want to make sure my template was correctly completed :(

@Jin I think my sleep might be those white lines in the pie chart.

@TimStone :)

5:30 AM

Ok people, I should've been to sleep almost an hour ago. Gonna go trade a little sushi then I'm out.

> EE is successful -- and the fanboys hate that. Get over it.
Huh, I never really considered them that successful.

I stopped thinking about EE so long ago

(not that it means that they aren't now, or weren't then, but I just never got that impression in my limited interaction with the site)
As an outsider looking in, I never said "Oh yeah, gimme a piece of that," heh.

5:40 AM
I still miss Usenet, frankly. I love SO, but Usenet has a place in my heart.

Jin
so successful that "we recently banned experts-exchange.com at blekko after tallying our user's /spam votes and noting that experts-exchange was the #1 most disliked site on blekko." skrenta.com/2011/02/blekko_stackoverflow_better_pr.html
@MichaelPetrotta I loved Usenet for discussions. had many memorable flame wars..

It had a culture of professionalism that SO hasn't matched. That's another name for elitism, but hey.

Jin
@MichaelPetrotta i spent a lot of time in comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg

I'm not....experienced enough to have used Usenet, seems I may have missed out. :P

It will never happen again. nostalgia
This makes me happier than it has any right to.
I think it tingles my OCD tendencies.

5:46 AM
Heheh :D

BTW FUSE is horribly undocumented

could he do fizzbuzz?

no, he could not. pretty much a deal killer.
he tried so hard though.

I mean, this undocumented:

amazing what you can make a do while do.

@MichaelPetrotta Heh, we're about to do some interviews again...though thankfully I think I get to sit this one out due to other things on my plate.

This is the only place where I could find parameter names for the API.

Thursday's guy looks more promising.
And I have, no joke, 10 phone screens to do this week and next.
And technically, I'm a developer.

@badp Ouch, that is bad. :/

@Jeff I'm going to sleep shortly, feel free to continue delaying the diamond updating :P

5:56 AM
?
oh, I have to wait to hear back from Robert before I do that.. he sends his love in an email care package first

@MichaelPetrotta Ah, people are so much fun on the phone, heh.

@JeffAtwood You might want to look again. (:

Phones exhibit a notable lack of whiteboard space.
@Tim: do you use a canned service for that, or something you rolled yourself?
#veryinterested
Time for bed, nearly. Night all.

(Sorry, I hate doing that, but I don't want to get myself into a bind on that one, heh)
G'night.

@Tim: I get it, I do the same.
Thanks for the thoughts.

6:10 AM
No problem, if you want to hear more about it sometime, I'd be happy to share the experiences somehow.

@badp ok the magic has happened

Diamondification complete!
golf claps

@JeffAtwood holy crap, the mod flag browser is awesome.

Oh no. The monster has been unleashed? |:
Oops, did I say that out loud? (;

@RebeccaChernoff Yeah, he was released from his mortgage a few moments ago.
(that doesn't make perfect sense, but I was struggling to make fun of the typo)

6:21 AM
What typo? ):

We all see that pencil!

TERRIBAD? :D

@TimStone That field is sanitized too :P

Oh, hahah.

1 hour later…
7:35 AM
@MarcGravell Just reproduced the incorrect size gravatar problem in the js room
The url for the gravatar gives s=19 as the size:

19?
what the...
ok, that is... interesting!

@YiJiang, did you see my @lert for earlier?

@RebeccaChernoff Yeah. I... need a thumbnail image for the page

hmmm... I think I see where that 19 might come from. Crazy, though

7:40 AM
@MarcGravell The ignored user size?

no, that is 16
there's only one place where it isn't a literal (of 16,32 or 48) - instead using $(this).attr("width")
not sure why width would be wrong though

And what is this?

any .avatar > img

(There are also other times where the size comes out wrong, too)

yes, this block fires periodically
so if the width is fubar, so will the gravatar

7:42 AM
Working with Prism, which simply grabs the user gravatar URL from the signature, I noticed that sometimes the size can sometime be really big

so the question becomes: why is the width fubar?

But that's slightly rarer, though the times it happens it's quite annoying - Prism doesn't resize the image from the url you give it, so when it happens new messages will obscure the bottom quarter of the screen.

@YiJiang We also expanded the scope, userscripts for the sites - api or not - are welcome.

so it again comes down to : why is it the wrong size (rather that the wrong gravatar, which is a consequence) - looking

Maybe use attr('width') instead? But still, .css uses computed style, so it still shouldn't be wrong

7:46 AM
"width" == 'width', no?

Here we go, I've caught a 37px width gravatar in the Gaming room:

can you snag the current DOM state from that in your browser?
ah, like that ;p

<li class="present-user user-container user-180" id="present-user-180" style="opacity: 0.981708; visibility: visible; width: 32px; display: block;">
<div class="avatar"><img width="32" height="32" class="user-gravatar32" alt="Fabian" title="Fabian" src="http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/7a4edb90d49b97cd456a2a402fdc7095?s=37&amp;d=identicon&amp;r=PG"></div><span class="data"><span class="last-activity-time">1297842450.3999999</span></span>
</li>

ok, that is equally odd ;p

Also, storing data in random span elements? -_-

7:50 AM
I'm sure there was a reason...
and yes, we do know about data values
perhaps a timing - running that loop during an animation, perhaps
(balpha isn't really here, that's just me)

@MarcGravell You logging in as @balpha? o_o

no - but I can simulate a "joined" event
we use it during dev for testing a busy looking room

Ah well, I was about to sound the sock puppet alarm

what, there's an alarm? oh damn

@Feeds An iron, actually. We iron our socks here. Josh does it to his all the time.

7:57 AM
I say we just drown the sock in the washer!

What the... Jon just got the bronze tag badge

I can see some insanely unlikely edge-cases...

@MarcGravell, looks like @YiJiang is good at provoking insanely unlikely :)

speaking of socks

I wonder if I should ask about my catered lunch...

8:08 AM
20 days vacation? Meh! They'll have to do better than that :)
Much better

I see @oraclecertifiedprofessional join, and I so think this would be the ideal gravatar:
hiya

@MarcGravell you mean someone doesn't show up on your doorstep every day at lunchtime delivering food for lunch? Huh.

@RebeccaChernoff I guess they could post it :)

you eat people!?

...oy.
2

8:10 AM
@MarcGravell i'm not too sure about the level of octogons

@MarcGravell What, you didn't know that? Sure she does... ducks

ducks too? yikes!
"everything except the beak and feet"

> "If the Juju had meant us not to eat people. He wouldn't have made us of meat" :)

that is sage wisdom. Sage.... and onion ;p

8:14 AM
> employees will never be poked with a sharp stick
calls shenanigans!

@RebeccaChernoff takes sharp stick out Get back to work!

@RebeccaChernoff Must be an awfully long stick :)

go go gadget arms

From suggested edits, <del>/blame</del> pokes @waffles with a very long sharp stick

WOB => SOB :)

8:34 AM
Haha, missing 2 reps for voting on cooking.se. suggests edit :)

@YiJiang that's back from the days when data- wasn't the new big thing yet :)
or, to say it this way, putting random attributes on HTML elements was still frowned upon

@balpha Like... 2010? >_<

Yeah, I'm sure you young'uns don't even remember that
re the avatar: do you remember if Fabian was already in the room when you loaded the page?
IOW, was the gravatar created by the server when the page loaded, or did he fly in?

@balpha He wasn't; I'm pretty sure this only happens to new joiners

8:42 AM
okay

Fabian specifically wasn't, though I think Ivo might have been

is it always 37?
you said you've been seing that before

Nope, Ivo's was 19, Fabian's is 37

19?

@balpha The smaller sizes catch my eyes more, since browser rescaling sucks

8:44 AM
that sucks. 37 isn't that bad, at least that's downscaling

The larger sizes might have escaped my notice.

but 19->32 upscaling is ugly

1 hour ago, by Yi Jiang
The url for the gravatar gives s=19 as the size:

Yeah, I think I know what happened

Oy @waffles takes out giant Stick of Blame and jabs him

@YiJiang Somebody destroyed edit suggestions recently; I don't know what happened

@MichaelMrozek Hey, you stole all my bug reports :O

@MichaelMrozek The Wheel Of Blame must be spinning hard.

@LoïcWolff The Stick of Blame is getting worked up pretty well too

Q: Formatting Sandbox

Ólafur WaageAs per Jeff's suggestion here in the comments. You can use this question as a formatting sandbox (if you can edit CW questions) and you can post answers if you wanna test out formatting there as well. Beware that since the changes to syntax highlighting in December 2010, no syntax highlighting ...

Q: Stack Exchange Elections Statistics Page

It pulls together information normally found in each candidate's profile as well as their Meta and SE-wi...

@YiJiang thanks for the hat-tip :)
Smart move using Jon Skeet. Get ready for all the people asking why he didn't get elected :)
> You can, of course examine the source of the page, though I won't do that if I were you - the page's code isn't exactly clean nor very readable.
Providing future ammunition for Marc & balpha there :)

@Benjol Yeah, well once I'm a professional coder for a million pageview per month website they can come and complain about my code ;)

We need more meta mods!

10:21 AM
@YiJiang we're here to complain ;p
just kiddin'

The Latex mod election page is sad, 3 positions and 3 candidates
I should apply just to lose

@ÓlafurWaage The webapps election ended with that
All three were immediately made mods

@ÓlafurWaage, and they're all protems?

cooking, english and photography only have 4 each

10:23 AM
protems?
I'm from moonlandia, I don't understand

pro tempore moderators

@ÓlafurWaage stand-in mods

@ÓlafurWaage, the SE-designated stand-in moderators

could be, don't know :)

10:24 AM
think boot strap ;)

thanks for explaining to the moonlander :D

(also, hi @ÓlafurWaage @Benjol & @YiJiang)

all 3 protemps present in photography. Only two in cooking, and only one in english. (I'd love to know why the other two EL&U ones aren't presenting themselves)
@Sathya, hi

Hi @Sathya
I got a lot of upvotes for a spelling error find

Voting on bugs is weird; I find bugs so minor I'm tempted to not report them, and when I do I get "nice question" badges, and then I find bugs that are cripplingly bad and get no upvotes for them

10:35 AM
hehe, its kind of a strange way of reporting bug
you could have the most popular bug report

Did people lose their minds?

Hahaha

@MichaelMrozek There might have been a really good question there in the first five minutes of it's existence. Otherwise, yeah, people are losing their mind

I am learning PHP...I am watching Fox.

I'm really interested in seeing his code.

Definately a sockpuppet

I see you're trying to use autocomplete. You should totally drop that and use jQuery: stackoverflow.com/questions/5015360/…

It would need to be five sockpuppets

Mexican Chicken Lasagna for lunch

@MichaelMrozek, yup, a bit of a stretch, maybe people did lose their minds :)
