Speaking of typos, I wonder what the actual percentage of dyslexics are in the population. They say the estimate is 10%, personally I think that's low. :)

well, cooking is not as easy as case hot: stove.turnOn(); break; @PopularDemand :)

@balpha isn't the problem more of setTimeout(stoveOff, xx);? :)

@balpha, I know; otherwise I'd be better at cooking.

@nick -1 not enough jQuery

6:03 PM
oh sorry $(document).delay(xx).queue(function(n) { stoveOff(); n(); });

I'm pretty sure there's a plugin. $.makePizza();

The cooking site actually taught me that I'm more intuitive than I thought. I 'just make stuff' and most people that I know really enjoy eating it. But I just kind of conduct experiments and then feed them to my friends.

@balpha
Could you make that flag go away? Pretty Please!

Yeah, someone flagged my Cyanide & Happiness comic, too.
Who'd have thought dropping the F-Bomb would be a problem.

6:06 PM
@spoulson I'm talking about the flag on your comic

done @Chacha102

I'm a 10k user, so I see all the flags for the room
@balpha Thanks!

@Chacha102 It was YOU!

do we?

There is real science behind cooking, though.

6:07 PM
@spoulson no... I just see all of the flags

The guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), also commonly called the cavy, is a species of rodent belonging to the family Caviidae and the genus Cavia. Despite their common name, these animals are not pigs, nor do they come from Guinea. They originated in the Andes, and studies based on biochemistry and hybridization suggest they are domesticated descendants of a closely related species of cavy such as Cavia aperea, C. fulgida, or C. tschudii, and therefore do not exist naturally in the wild. The guinea pig plays an important role in the folk culture of many Indigenous South American groups, espe...

@Chacha102 I see flags, too. not quite 10k

In case you did not know, wikipedia gets special link treatment also :)
@balpha rocks :)

@TimPost I've ended up the designated steak guy. And, I barely know what I'm doing. I just live by the adage that anything worth doing, is worth doing right.

6:08 PM
@spoulson Do you see a big number 1 next to general right now?

42 (forty-two) is the natural number following 41 and preceding 43. The number has received considerable attention in popular culture because of its appearance in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as the "Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything". In mathematics Forty-two is a pronic number and an abundant number; its prime factorization 2 · 3 · 7 makes it the second sphenic number and also the second of the form { 2 · 3 · r }. As with all sphenic numbers of this form, the aliquot sum is abundant by 12. 42 ...

in a blue background?

Just FYI, the wikipedia API is the most un-RESTful, awfully-documented web API I've ever seen :)

@Chacha102 nope

@balpha - I just love that it works :)

6:09 PM
{| class="infobox nowraplinks" style="width: 20em;" |- ! colspan="2" align="center" style="font: 10em times; background:#ccc;" | 0 |- | colspan="2" | |- | Cardinal | 0, zero, "oh" (), nought, naught, nil. |- | Ordinal || 0th, zeroth, noughth |- | Factorization || 0 |- | Divisors || all numbers |- | Roman numeral || N/A |- | Arabic || style="font-size:150%" | ٠,0 |- | Bengali || style="font-size:150%" | ০ |- | Devanāgarī || style="font-size:150%" | ० |- | Chinese || 〇,零 |- | Japanese numeral || 〇,零 |- | Khmer || ០ |- | Thai || ๐ |- | Binary || 0 |- | Octal || 0 |- | Duodecimal || 0 |- ...

@spoulson That is the 10k ability. It tells me how many flags are present in each room, and gives me a special page to view them

Beautiful

Ouch
That can't be right.

In graph theory, a clustering coefficient is a measure of degree to which nodes in a graph tend to cluster together. Evidence suggests that in most real-world networks, and in particular social networks, nodes tend to create tightly knit groups characterised by a relatively high density of ties (Holland and Leinhardt, 1971; Watts and Strogatz, 1998). In real-world networks, this likelihood tends to be greater than the average probability of a tie randomly established between two nodes (Holland and Leinhardt, 1971; Watts and Strogatz, 1998). Two versions of this measure exist: the global an...

we didn't implement a full wikitext parser
we'd need all wikipedia templates, for starters

6:11 PM
status-goodenough

so for now, we went with a solution that works most of the times

@chacha you're correct! I'm shocked.
Cool stuff.

parse wikitext with regexes
(ducks)

@balpha Gotcha. I (wrongly) assumed you guys were doing GETs and dumping the html into the chat.

@balpha I DEMAND perfection

6:11 PM
@devinb About what?

status-executed

@Chacha, where is the flag page?

@chacha 10k stuff

@LanceRoberts Click on the blue thing next to General

Lance, there should be a big [1] next to the name of the room you're in
That was when I flagged chacha
for lying about whether or not I could see the flags.
turns out he was correct.

6:13 PM
@LanceRoberts Cancel/Delete don't actually work yet, but eventually it will allow you to flag a message from there (Increasing the flag count by 1)
and either @balpha removed it, or something else happened

Q: Feature Request: Area51 Suspension Queue

Evan CarrollWith my unwarranted suspension on Area 51 ending in 21 hrs, I have a feature request for a suspension queue. A suspension queue would permit any users that were suspended to queue up their contributions to be committed when their suspension is lifted. I think this would greatly eliminate the nee...

@balpha - any chance for special IMDB links too?

I cleared it
cancel/delete works for me :)
@tim good idea -- there's a meta question for that

@balpha Since I'm the room owner, can I ban people from the room?
I don't think that has been implemented yet..

no, you can only make the room read-only to the general public and just allow specific users to talk

ah, k
@devinb Nice point (On Meta)
Just BTW, anyone posting in the Evan Carroll thread, try not to feed him. He isn't actually clueless, he just wants reactions.

6:21 PM
Trolling on the interwebs? Whodathunkit ;)

Maybe we can use this chat thing to finally get rid of Evan for good :)
or at least stop him from trolling

@Chacha, I think that every time I see someone responding. Glad it's not just me! But it's bad to leave junk in the system, too.

I think we should organize an effort to quench Evan's trolling

the mere fact that you're talking about him right here is feeding him

It actually reminds me of something I learned in Child Development in college (one of my majors was psychology): some kids do bad things intentionally because they like the attention more than they dislike the punishment.
The system auto-added one of those "below this should be new!" dotted lines to my screen. The only thing currently below that line is my own post.

6:27 PM
yeah, that happens a lot
do you have multiple screens?

I was using multiple rooms earlier but not anymore.

the reason for that is surprisingly simple:
the line gets inserted above that last active monologue (i.e. single user's chat bubble)
if we put it below, there might be something the user has said after you left, but above the line

6x48 port gigabit blades in a cisco 6500 series core, and a new 10/100 48 port PoE switch (first of many) for new PoE phones, people with gig switches at their desk are now connected through that 10/100 switch instead of a gig connection

@PopularDemand Reminds me of a scene in the Simpsons. "Bart, you problem is that you don't care what kind of attention you get."

bonus, that switch wasn't intended for this, so it only has a 10/100 link back to the core network, so an entire side of a building instead of a gig each, are sharing 100mbit
at what point can you harm the perpetrator?

6:31 PM
I am completely done trying to find a positive side of Evan

@TimPost Join the club

@Tim his rep graph is entertaining...

I like Pekka's answer

A: Feature Request: Area 51 Suspension Queue

PekkaAny queueing people need to do, they can do on their own machine.

I don't really see any big deal in it, you just evaluate each post on it's own and respond accordingly. He's not near as bad as He who shall not be named was.

Flag it as spam and be done with it..

6:33 PM
Ugh...I hate LinkedIn recruiter spam, masquerading as an invitation. I guess I can be happy about being noticed, at least. But sheesh, pay for a pro account and just send a message.

@lance I keep confusing he-who-shall with you -- your identicons are quite similar :)

Ah, finally, my icon made it to the second row of the room list thing.

Please don't abuse the spam flag, flag based on the post not the poster.
@balpha, that is definitely my curse, I hate gravatar

Good show on that space between the rows, w/r/t the bouncing.

@Lance Yes! don't abuse the spam flag! It's not spam just because you don't like the guy.
3

6:35 PM
As Jeff has pointed out, we should use the spam flag as per the standard internet definition of it.

Unwanted messages?

If EVER you believe that it would be valid if someone else wrote it, then it's NOT spam.

Unaddressed garbage

ah, got it

@Adam did you go to college in Pittsburgh by any chance?

6:36 PM
Unwanted Messages: Downvote if still appropriate to the site, Close if not.

Well, this one is axe-grinding in the form of a feature request

@PopularDemand Nope, not me. London :)

also, Evan likes negative attention. He thrives on it. Because he doesn't care about rep on Meta, nothing we can do can hurt him.

@Adam sorry, a guy who lived down the hall from me had the same name as you.

Next he'll do hula hooping in the form of a bug report
and after that, who knows

6:37 PM
If we engage him positively (constructively) only, then we remove the 'reaction' that he's hoping to get.

@Tim, yep, he could have wrote it better, probably would be good if edited, but not sure if it's worth it.

He's smirking whenever he speaks. So just ignore that.

Yeah, my name is common. Makes my vanity googling rather hard :)

Lets you have awright@example.com at least.
Hm.
this_is_a_test@devinb.com
Is that highlighted for you @devinb?

thisisatest@chacha102.com
it didn't highlight mine

6:39 PM
Not for me at least

You can see your own @PopularDemand ?
I don't see my own.

it shows the autocompleter though, even if there's no space before the "@"

@Chacha102

it shouldn't

it doesn't

6:40 PM
no, talking to yourself is discouraged

But I'm the only friend I have!
Hey @JeffDavis

Hi
What
Er, What's with the discussions about waffles?

Just saying Hi
its a Meta thing..

mm...waffles?

grumble mumble don't worry @popular, we'll get them. soon they'll see. soon they'll all see!!!

6:41 PM
yeah, I got a little type happy and hit enter before the whole question got out

@Chacha102 Now, I'm really hungry.

i hate rabbits

@JeffDavis this is Chat 2.0. You can edit your messages.

Well, devin seems to have disappeared. Can you see the highlighting on this test@Chacha102.com ?

6:42 PM
@fara But they're so cute and delicious.

no they just die and make everyone really upset ;)

@PopularDemand No highlight here.

Well, sure; you're not Chacha.

nifty

yes
I can

6:43 PM
oic

Yeah, I can.
sorry.

I always though ER signified I am editing ;)

That's the sound of my brain making an error. errr....

No worries, and thanks.
That could be an issue for certain unfortunately named users.

6:44 PM
like @example

I suppose they should just change their names, though.

Hello @Fara

Are we having a random picture posting contest? :)

Well, that's my cue to leave.
G'day.

bye @pop

6:47 PM
hello?

Actually, the waffle bunny, hello kitty waffle iron, hello kitty vibrator were sorta related.

If it's a fractal made from random, is it really random?

6:51 PM
oh, okay, dilemma solved.

I've created my first very own room!
Unicornify! - Discuss your favorite unicorn avatar creating service
(yes, that makes even me happy)

I really hate marketing
not the idea part

Jin
unicorn makes everyone happy.

but the making videos and all that stuff
what do you call it..
oh yeah, the work part..

6:52 PM
say hello to Jin everyone -- he's responsible for the looks of all of this

Hi @jin
Why aren't you blue?

I thought marketing was just making up things while sounding like you know what you are talking about

hello to Jin everyone
/me gets coat

Sort of like English papers

Jin
@chacha102 because i'm not a smurf
oh hai!

6:53 PM
So @Jin is who makes everything look good..

He just said responsible for the looks. Not necessarily for good looks. ;)

Jin
well i try. but "looks good" is somewhat relative. :)

you mean subjective

Jin
yes
relative to one's taste

6:54 PM
Relative was more interesting

discussion closed as "subjective and argumentative"

he must have an artistic mind

subjective has the letter j in it

Somebody please post me a test message I can flag please, I think something's not working right with it.

@Thomas somehow you keep ending my discussions

6:56 PM
test message you can flag

@LanceRoberts I hate you, you stupid ugly cow!

@lance that's crap, I hate you (not)

Jin
since i'm here, feel free to let me know if you have any comments on trilogy/beta/area51/se.com UIs. I try to read meta.so as much as I can for UI related issues.

who keeps flagging my unicorn?
[that sounds weird]

Thanks all, I guess my flags are just getting erased as fast as I flag something.

6:57 PM
ooh, you got a star flag

@Jin You've already heard the complaints about everything on Meta being Grey right?

@lance both flags are still there

Jin
yes. but that's by design. so when people see gray version of a site, they know it's meta

@balpha, yep, I mean my real flags
which means they're being cleared manually

Oh, I thought grey was just the universal awesome background color

Jin
6:58 PM
well it is...

cleared them now

I just don't spend any time on regular sites, just Meta.SO, and the grey is depressing me..

cheap vi@gra

@jin I would love dark themes. I tried the userstyle, but it didn't work so well.

7:00 PM
Oh man, what a question

Q: Bad but unavoidable websites

chefsmartI asked this over at stackoverflow, but was kicked to this site instead: - What are some websites that are really bad (at performance, design, usability etc) that you would rather not use, but are compelled to because of necessity or lack of alternatives? Post each example as a separate answer...

that should be a favourite not marked as spam

light sensitivity and all that kinda sucks

@Thomas, yeh we had a conversation on that one earlier, scroll up

Jin
@GeorgeMarian i'm taking UI suggestions in the feedback room: chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms/77/chat-feedback

/me takes a gander.

7:01 PM
have you considered a captcha before joining

@Lance sssh
all the "list of x" or "recommend an alternative of x" questions make me rage for a while
and then I realise I should possibly go and play some TF2, like just about.... now.

all right, actual conversation.
I looked at the C# chat room, but it was deader than a doorknob.

Hey @SteverB

'sup?

I guess if I want to follow this conversation and also see what is in other chat rooms, I need a new browser tab/window

7:08 PM
Currently Jin, the StackOverflow Designer, is talking about UI in the Chat Feedback channel, if you're interested

@Thomas, see this post I made on the topic, meta.webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/354/…

@Bruce You can follow the chat using the 'other rooms you're in' widget on the siet

@Chacha102 thanks for the pointer, nice to see the feature there, anticipating my needs

@Bruce You can also easily switch between channels by pressing the channel name.

@Chacha1
whoops
autocomplete fail

7:12 PM
meh, you can type @cha and I'll still get it
I generally join all of the active rooms when I log on

@Chacha102 thanks, I noticed I could click then names, but it takes a few seconds to switch. Ok, so I'm being overly demanding, but it would be cool if it switched between channels instantly, like alt-tab on windows.

and then just keep one or two open

@balpha, you might want to delete the 'hate you' test message, since it's been flagged and shows in the box without context. I'm fine with it, but I don't want people thinking bad thoughts about you.

@Bruce That was suggested at one point

@Cha or maybe if the hover popup just contained more content than just one entry.

7:14 PM
Can I have some bread and wine?

@lance actually, it's been starred, not flagged

Only if you promise to tell us tales afterwards

That sounds fair

Who would star such a thing?

gives bread and wine to @JeffDavis
What will you tell us tales of?

7:16 PM
Well, I once spun my car about 5 times on the highway
going about 85

right, I've shown chat seems to work with Steam in-game overlay, I'll be back when I die next

ok

After spinning to a slow slide it bumped the center median going about 5 mph
and crunched the side door
the passenger couldn't get out
and a semi came down the hill toward us
he saw us for about a full mile
but refused to turn
at about 100 ft from hitting us, he swerved at the last minute
while we all yelled, something like "AHHHHHHH"
(5 people in the car)
after which we all pushed the car off to the shoulder

@balpha, yep starred.

I found out the car started and drove it to the local Eat'N'Park
But some people must have saw my car spinning and called 911

7:20 PM
@lance shouldn't be anymore; I've removed the stars

While we were sitting there about 200 yards from the exit (where the spinout happened) about 5 ambulances, 3 fire trucks and 8 police cars showed up

@balpha, yep, saw that.

and they just drove around looking for an accident for about 15 minutes
there was a girl in the back seat, and while the car was spinning she just kept screaming the whole time
it made it really hard to recover from the spin
but still did, except for the little bump at the end
fun thing was there were bowling balls in the trunk
so when I took the car in to get repaired
the repairmen were a little freaked out that there were dents in the trunk going outward
That's about it
True tale. Is it worth the fictional wine? :)

i was riding in my bothers car a few years back, a deer jumped out and landed on the bonnet. he lost control and went into a wall. the car rolled 3 times and landed upside down in a river. we both climbed out without a scratch and just sat on the riverbank stunned until the police arrived.

Hey, the bread wasn't cheap either..

7:23 PM
Well, I have more tales, but I will have to come for more bread and wine later :)

wonderful

@Fara Amazing how that happens. What kind of car was it?

it was a ford focus

so Jeff, you actually lied. You said everyone in the car yelled something like "AHHHH" while you then proceeded to contradict yourself by saying the girl in the back seat "kept screaming the whole time". These are two distinct sounds.
wine + bread removed

@JeffDavis Wow, that's quite a story. Did anyone wet they're pants? ;)

7:26 PM
ah, well, the whole time was referring to the whole spinning time

I really should find something to do, instead of just cutting conversations short.

I need to get some lunch
But before that

@thomas if you yell "ahhh" and then just gradually increase the pitch, you'll discover that it becomes a "scream"

WINE AND BREAD FOR EVERYONE!!!
passes out wine and bread

What's the vintage?

7:27 PM
@George well, the girl did continue screaming for about a minute after we stopped spinning
which was fairly entertaining

@devinb Look at the bottle yourself

I was bored enough to create a web service that makes pictures of magical creatures. This lead to a company in the Q&A business offering me an awesome job.

she had to take a breath a few times

hands @devinb the bottle

How's that for bread and wine?

7:27 PM
@JeffDavis LOL I bet!

meant the bread

hands @devinb a loaf of bread

hands the bottle back

@devinb Yeah, that occured to me while typing, but I had typed enough already

juggles

7:28 PM
starts pouring cups of wine

goes back to work. glass in hand

Carlsberg for me please

I suppose bored programmers come up with interesting things

ponders cooking something up for lunch

I'm going to go into town and get some grub. Just make sure not to spill anything while I'm gone.

7:29 PM
make pizza

I need to whip up something that'll get me noticed for some work. I just have a hard time motivating myself to do "artificial" things.

It's fun and tasty :)

Okay, I'm off for now -- see y'all later, don't break the chat

the internet is powered by bored programmers i think :)

quick, everybody break the chat

Jin
7:30 PM
and rainbow hamster unicorns

hands @Fara a cup of wine

@balpha aww, ok, we'll be careful
Okay, who has the latest XSS attacks?

I like turtle

oy...drives me nuts when a site needs javascript to function but they fail to inform me of that fact

@chacha102 i'll have a scotch if that's ok

7:32 PM
@Fara Back to the previous discussion. I am pretty convinced that the newer cars (such as the focus) which crunch a lot save a lot of lives.
IE the car crunches but you don't

yes they're designed to crunch, as pieces fall off the car they take energy away from the accident

and to make the crash longer

@George according to the html source, there is a warning if javascript is disabled

@Eldimo I wasn't refering to SO. They do it right. I was refering to: lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability

ah ok :)

7:35 PM
hands @Fara a bottle of scotch

@JeffDavis like in motor-racing the spectacular crashes are normally not so bad, it's when the car goes from 200 mph to a standstill is when you need to worry. in those situations all the energy from the cars deceleration goes through the driver.

Speaking of crashes. There was a spectacular one recently, in truck racing. One tractor basically shore off another's cab. Resulted in only relatively minor injuries.

yeah you would need a lot more car to absorb 200mph

ok, don't mess up my tavern
I'll be back later

But what about our drinks?

Jin
7:41 PM
Can I smoke here?

@Chacha102 I promist nothing! ;) see yah

They're on the counter, get em yourselves :)
@Jin No

Jin
I want a refund then.

@Chacha102 I guess I should put out my cigar then. :P

this chat room needs parisian-style outside chairs and an awning

7:46 PM
has the feeling that he's forgetting something today
Of course, heck if I know what. Gotta get the rent check in today. So, I'm not forgetting that.

i just generally start from the position that i've forgotten everything and work from there

@Fara agreed and some misters. :)

@fara Yah, I've going to my mental list. I think the it was the need to check my bank account.
speaking of which, high contrast mode sucks on my bank's site

I was walking to work this morning and I came back to get my wallet.
my wallet had 78p in it, I was not impressed.

7:55 PM
that's pretty good really, normally i would have waited until i had been standing in the queue for 10 minutes before i realised i'd forgotten my wallet
