Q: Is it possible for some "Too Broad" questions to be exceptions to the rule?

ken2kI randomly came across this question. It's obviously too broad: there are either too many possible answers, or good answers would be too long for this format (see the first answer, which has more than 15k characters). Of course, it's an interesting question, and those who posted answers put a ...

tl;dr: Grumpy users got upset that something appeared to be too broad and became popular; grumpy meta users got mad at said grumpy users for being grumpy; chaos ensued.

oh. Thanks! drowning in all the text :D

Yeah, grumpy people write a lot. Maybe it's the Duty Calls syndrome.

If anyone's interested in Sportsmanship badge, here is the query User's answers with competing answers. All such answers are included, but they are ordered by score, since own answer must have score > 0.

user315433
Doesn't look too good for me: out of 289 answers on SO, only 26 qualify (have score>0 and a competing answer).

Wow, one of my "posted on behalf of the OP" answers actually has a score of 4:

A: Puppet can't find the module that I just installed

hichris123Puppet was installing the module in the .puppet directory tree of my home directory, but was not looking there when it came time to look for the module! Instead, it was ONLY looking in /etc/puppet/modules. It seems that, by default, it only looks there. If you want it to look in ~myusername/.pupp...

@sandwich thanks a lot, because I tried searching 'sportmanship' on SEDE and failed.
So... out of 176 answers on Android, only 62 qualify, and I only upvoted 27.
123/48/5 on SO :/

Oh hey @Shog9! I think it's time for your ping about the new roomba criteria - how's work going on that?

oh, right, that

Maybe you should write it on your hand so you don't forget.

user315433
There are some excellent ideas about misuse prevention, too.

@hichris123 I hope the man has large hands ...

8:49 PM
Oh, right, floating heads don't have hands. Joke's on you @rene.

\o/ ... I have success ...

@Quill Well that's your problem right there.

9:10 PM
My conclusion: it's hard to get if you're the first answerer on active sites, because the chance you'll get back to the questions you have answered is low.

Is timer the most useless Google search feature yet?

user315433
Maybe it's not , but I've not yet succeeded in finding a use case.

maybe Google should spend more time fixing Android... or looking for decent lawyers <_<

10:06 PM
looks like one of those "Now" features. Google is slowly porting all of its Android apps to JavaScript...

Thankfully Cordova and Xamarin abstract the Java out of the process

From the Summary of a LinkedIn profile

I had a lecturer refer to Stack Overflow as "That place where you get your head bitten off for asking a question"
I turned around and literally made this ಠ_ಠ face.... I was even wearing a Stack Overflow T-shirt <_<

user315433
Perhaps s/he just wanted to scare the students into doing their own homework.

He strikes me as one of those "I have an education in X field, why is my question being closed" type people

I just reduced the number of windows open in Safari on this computer to 1. I am so on top of things!

How can you have DevDoodle and the Tavern open in one window?

@Quill It's not surprising. You get a bunch of people who don't feel like reading the help center (surprise! people don't like to read???) and then you get a bunch of semi-grumpy users who either downvote without leaving a comment or leave a comment but don't solve the problem (which people hate). That's not to say that it's all SO's fault, but there are definitely ways the first time asking process could be improved.

yeah. there's a lack of care from a lot of new users

Yeah, but I can't really blame them. People don't care whether they're asking a decent question, they want the answer. That's just human nature.

If anyone has podcast withdrawal, there is State of Programming with Jeff Atwood (from March, but I don't remember it posted here).

@Quill That's the point :p
@sandwich That voice makes it sound like an advertisement.
Oh, here's the sponsor message.
