New thing: there was a spam post linking to a site with .paris TLD

@JasonC I assume you're voting to close?

@404 Thanks. I failed to notice the ... is actually a link.

@Mooseman rabble rabble rabble

@JasonC well, @Mooseman is one of them why not asking him directly here?
@kos actually I didn't notice too until @404 told you, so thanks!
So why we need the "why" command for at all?

@ShadowWizard Glad my oversights can help others. :)

Today's xkcd comic (Estimating Time):

@Shog9 Yeah; when I'm there I try to get things in the queue. It's an uphill, demoralizing battle though.

That's fair. A downhill, moralizing battle isn't really much of a battle anyway.
More of a, hmm, revival meeting.
Remember when posting an overly-broad, subjective crap question on MSO wasn't a slam-dunk to getting it closed and deleted?

4:13 PM
@Shog9 Frankly no, but maybe I’m too new and need to get off your lawn.

(In case you think I'm mixing metaphors unfairly, growing up we had a basketball hoop at the bottom of a hill)
@AlexisKing it didn't last long. The sorts of people who like to answer those questions and the sorts of people who like to hang around on meta don't overlap very much.

I just woke up and was playing Factorio until like 6AM, so I don't get the metaphor, I'm just laughing imagining running down a hill while getting super pumped up about life.

YEAH!
uh
sounds like a good excuse to make more coffee

Yeah that's about to happen.

!!/coffee

4:20 PM
@ShadowWizard brews coffee for @ShadowWizard

Here you go. Sharing coffee with Tavern.

4:37 PM
^ Reason #1 for leaving smokey here.
@Shog9 Well there's coffee in me now but I still don't understand the metaphor, but that's OK, lol.
And no I don't remember that time either. Young sites though are usually pretty good about having objective discussions about questions on their metas though. It's nice.
I'm having trouble staying motivated to participate in the large sites, really, that's sort of one of the reasons. I love hanging out on like, woodworking. And mechanics has been super fun.
Speaking of which I really hope woodworking makes it out of beta.
I saw a sidebar ad for it on DIY I was pumped about that.
@hichris123 It's only been a day and I'll admit I'm kind of liking that smokey's posting here as a last resort. Not because there's less posts, but it's a useful concept.

@JasonC that varies widely. Young sites that have clearly-defined topics don't need a whole lot of discussion, but sometimes get it anyway. Young sites that don't have that need the discussion badly, but sometimes don't get it.
Really depends on how long it takes for folks to see a problem.

Yeah I know.
Hardware recs has been good about it. I was so down on that site when it was a proposal, and now I really like it. They've done a great job at keeping it focused in the face of potential chaos. Plus they're friendly.

Also chem.

Yeah

Wait, yeah?
I regular chem. How can it be friendly then? :P

4:47 PM
No

Interesting "how".

Hey there was that post on MSE a while back, with a nice graph of how much (or how little) spam gets through the SE filters. Does anybody remember where that was?
Maybe it was MSO.

@hichris123 I'm pretty surly today and it was neutral to me. So therefore, from your perspective, it was positive.

It's your own post, dammit

4:54 PM
@JasonC I see.

Oh
That's why I remembered seeing it... >.>
I can't decide what non-productive thing I want to do today.
Should I research suspension for my car, work on perfecting my polyurethane mirror finish technique, play Factorio, or continue binge watching Voyager? It's so stressful.
I could finish writing all this documentation for a client, but that'd be a waste of time.

Where are you in Voyager?

Near the end of season 2.
It's the only trek I never saw during its original run, so it's actually new for me. It's growing on me. It's got some TOS vibes.
I find that it demands a very forgiving audience though.
Well I never saw TOS during its original run.

It does require being forgiving.
If you haven't seen it before, I say keep moving ahead with Voyager

5:09 PM
It has had a couple episodes that were too much even for me to forgive though. Like Investigations (the one that ended Jonas the moles mini arc and sort of retroactively nullified all of Paris' character development), will probably remain my least favorite episode for a while.
I hit a bump with that one and lost interest for a couple days.

If I say "Salamander" does it mean anything yet?

Yeah lol

Ok. That one wasn't good either.

But that episode was so over the top that I just pretended it didn't happen. Investigations actually tried.

Very good point.

5:15 PM
My favorite episode so far (which I resent because I'm one of those Braga haters) has been the one where the ship duplicated itself and everybody died. Uh... Deadlock.
But it's cause I'm a sucker for all those weird duplicate people episodes.
Did you ever watch Farscape?

There was a semi-decent book based on the after effects of Deadlock: memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Echoes_%28novel%29
I did. I watched it for the first time in December
I liked it a lot

Yeah I really liked it too.
The whole twinning thing and its consequences inexplicably freaked me out for a really long time.

I liked that it took so long to resolve. It wasn't just a two part episode that was resolved quickly and then forgotten. They used it and used it well.

Yeah. They used it really well.
But yeah I always get sucked in by that kind of stuff. There was also uh, let's see... TNG's Second Chances, DS9: Whispers (my favorite DS9 episode by far), Visionary (to some extent).

@JasonC Addicted yet?

5:25 PM
@AlexisKing Yeah and I haven't even made it past the tutorial campaigns. I keep replaying levels to beat my times.
I was up until like 6AM.

@JasonC I liked Visionary. I had to go look up Whispers because that title didn't seem familiar. That was a good episode too

That one DS9 episode where Molly fell in some random time portal and skipped 10 years is... kind of that style too I guess. But it didn't really use its potential, especially when she went back and met herself. And it was kind of a cheap reset. I remember being disappointed that the writers weaselled their way out of tackling moral issues there.
DS9 had a way of making things fizzle out.

A lot of Trek did. They really liked getting back to the status quo at the end of the episode.
I still like it, but sometimes it felt like there was a lot more they could have done with it

Yeah definitely.
Well there's always the JJ Abrams' alternate reality...

It's so blinding! lens flare to the eyes

5:35 PM
I'm fascinated now by this talk of a Babylon 5 reboot. I'm sure it will be crap. But still.
Yeah lol.

I have to finish season 2 of Daredevil and then Babylon 5 is next on my list. I haven't seen that one either.

I comfort myself by thinking that there's also another me somewhere, in an alternate timeline where JJ Abrams doesn't exist.

Heh

I bet you're gonna like Babylon 5.
It's kind of like everything DS9 wanted to be, but it totally nails it.

Sweet

5:42 PM
Oh, in my alternate JJ Abrams-less timeline, Lost doesn't have a crappy ending. I'm going to sleep well tonight knowing that somewhere out there, I'm not still bitter about it 6 years later.
And I walked out of The Force Awakens happy.
Welp, I've decided, today is Factorio day.

But, in this universe, there is probably more Michael Bay. Everytime someone looks at the Enterprise, entire sections just explode for no reason.
A ship to ship fight destroys planets

Haha
I'm laughing. That's a good note to leave on, lol. See ya.

Enjoy the game.

Elections tend to be a sort of "Okay, these are the sites that still need elections right now, what can we schedule this week?" sort of deal. What's picked is based on the urgency of the call plus how long it's been since the call was made. I did actually schedule this a week in advance (plus the ones that would be starting this week on other sites), but that was less overt and more of an internal memo to self on what my weekly agenda included. — Grace Note ♦ 2 hours ago
