@Yi - It looks like I got permission from Mr. Pryor to use the kiwi or any other art regarding fogbugz (this is in reference to an ad for an open source project to rotate inthe ad space - the project to wrap the xml API with C++)

@tim Yeah, I saw that

@YiJiang Any suggestions for me on how to make a decent image? Never done any graphics before

keep using enter, I think it's funny.

4:03 PM
@tim Well, we could start with a decent font, then you'll also need to consider how to compose the image
Did you use Powerpoint to create that?

tim
@YiJiang It was my first attempt with Gimp (win32)
@YiJiang and it is ok to laugh and point fingers - it is horrible looking

/me laughs and points (didn't see the image in question, though)

@MichaelMrozek you could always delete your answer

@gnarf You can't after it's accepted

oh
shrug
never wanted to delete /uncheck something
:)

4:09 PM
geeeeeeeeeeeeeez @gnarf

?

She just wanted to show off her backwards smiles

i've been seeing them long enough in the real chat world

has a bug been reported for this?

4:12 PM
Yeah

Fix already ready for the next build, even.

unsurprising
now to abuse this bug while I can!!!

Probably the only thing <marquee> is good for -- a fun way to demonstrate an XSS vulnerability

4:14 PM
@balpha you should totally drop that and put in a <script> element using jQuery instead.

oh, does jQuery work in javascript tags now?
awesome

I heard that once upon a time, jQuery wasn't its own language
oh boy how do times change!

A: How does SO enforce the daily vote limits?

badpIf you're asking if there's another way to do so, then obviously yes. In the user table, add a column for each vote limit. Reset the columns every night to the appropriate vote allowance. Decrement the value every time you use a vote. Check the value to know how many votes are left. Similarly, ...

Can somebody who does DBs slap me for this post
It's how I'd do that, which probably means it's a horrible idea.

A: How can I unbless an object in Perl?

Sébastien BoespflugI don't know, perhaps you should ask people who know.

@PopularDemand Looks like the "Most Useless Stack Overflow Answer Awards" just found a winner!

Kev
is editing this: stackoverflow.com/questions/3769668/… being overly picky?

@Kev What's there to edit?

@Kev Depends on what you'd change.

Kev
4:40 PM
edit out slang "innit"

@Kev I wouldn't waste my time, but I'm not actively against the change.

Q: Could a Company Use SO Technology for their tech support / dicussion?

ScottI think this system is amazing and I am a huge fan. I would like to suggest this platfrom to a company I know who has tried "forums" before and failed. I think they could really use this for their general tech support but users could also contribute and vote up and down things the same way they...

That comes up again and again and again and again... shakes head

@TimStone They should have it in the sidebar faq

What do mods do with posts that get flagged through /review or other means?
Are they informing the OPs about why they're wrong?

I think in cases where deletion is justified, just that happens. But, I'm not sure. Where's @BilltheLizard?

4:45 PM
I think generally no, it would take forever. There was a discussion about it a while ago; I think I have a feature request somewhere to still show comments on deleted posts in the inbox, and they're testing a thing now that lets mods push notification messages to users

Q: Please Add Means of Converting Reputation to Actual Beer

Craig StuntzWhen I help someone solve a programming problem, they often express their gratitude for the solution (yay!). Generally, this takes the form of one of the following: "Think you!" Sometimes, people offer to hire me for further work. (Generally, stay away from these folks; they've been hiding thei...

@Kev Thank you for this by the way. I hope the team finds it more helpful than annoying, heheh :)

This has gathered 28 upvotes :P

Well, I am pretty thirsty.

@MichaelMrozek That's kinda what I figured... but that's somewhat... distressing.

4:46 PM
There were a bunch of convoluted solutions proposed; I'm on board the "alert them about comments on deleted posts" train

The only two results I can see are "user gets confused, learns nothing and reposts, maybe thinking that SE is glitchy" and "user gets actively displeased with SE, leaving forever and/or telling people SE sucks and/or trolling."

Kev
@TimStone - aye no worries...very impressive bit of debugging...they should be happy that it's one less thing to spend 4hrs hunting down :)

@MichaelMrozek I feel like that train is going to crash, killing all 402 people on board, at Jeff Atwood.

Yeah, I have this habit of getting bored and rummaging through SO's client side code, so I figured I'd take a peek. :P

@TimStone I had that habit too. Unfortunately it was with the HTML, so I picked up plenty of <table> and <b> to bash people with along the way

4:49 PM
@YiJiang I know, I'm still afraid we might need to send you to therapy for that. :(

Hello
I hope you all enjoy Dan's pinned message

Any plans to add in info into the README about the keyboard nav script?

Yes :P
I was just out all day yesterday, so I haven't had a chance yet.

The new ad admittedly isn't as good, but on the plus side we won't get sued

Kev
any of you guys follow Jeremy D Miller and Scott Bellware on twitter?

yes spam

@ircmaxell Don't think so

That's why I asked here...

ok maybe I'm wrong

@YiJiang Seconded, just an answer to a bad question, heh.

5:11 PM
Ok, I recant then

Hm, interesting page none the less

hey @Josh

Wow, what a difference!!!
90% under 40k GBP per year
90% under $108k USD per year

@Sathya Hey there!
How are you?

good, thanks @Josh how about yourself ?

5:14 PM
The UK 90% level is the US 10% level (accounting for exchange rate)

@Sathya pretty well thanks

@Josh good to hear :)

Sorry, promise I don't disappear that totally that often. Spent most of the weekend laying on the couch getting fluid and generally feeling like shit. My dehydration needed to be attended to. Docs gave me a liter or so of fuid via IV, but I still needed more. Then my sinuses kicked in and I have been coughing up phlegm and running a sinus headache most of the weeekend. So sleep was the order of the day, along with chicken noodle soup. Then I overslept for work this morning :\

@drachenstern You're back!
Are you recovering, then?

For now ;) ... now to catch up on 16 hours of missed work :( [I had lofty ambitions for the weekend]
@Josh I feel mostly recovered. I am waiting on my GP to call me back today with some results from some tests we ran Friday AM (before the hospital fun started)

5:19 PM
@drachenstern get well soon

@Sathya thanks for the warm wishes

@drachenstern I'm glad to hear that. Things sounded bad on Friday!

@Josh be me. Doc called me while I was driving home frantic that I needed to go back to the hospital
I was worried.

I'll see ya'll later. off to sleep

So what's dumb is that it really turned out to be just a bowel obstruction (dangerous in it's own right) but that wasn't what we feared it might have been

5:21 PM
have a good day @drachenstern (take care!) and you too @Josh

So is @YiJiang about atm? I doubt @DanGrossman is ... has the issue with the cached version of the page rendering as unicode (or something like that) in Firefox been made known?

@drachenstern Right, well I think I'm pulling the cached version

or have I got a stale page?

@drachenstern The Firebug encoding/unicode/something problem is killing me

@YiJiang ahhh, firefox bugs, lovely that.

5:25 PM
@drachenstern Firefox, sorry. If only it was that easy...

So long as it was a known issue, I'll bite my tongue and say no more ;) ... 48 hours out of the loop does that

Well maybe it's a Firebug issue

@Sathya catch you later

lol, have we had any non-devs test it? :p

@drachenstern I'll bet you were worried!

5:27 PM
@Josh thanks for the kind words and support. I also now know how cranky I feel after 30+ hours NPO and no sleep and waiting in the ER triage area for three hours because the two times they came to call me I was attending to nature and nobody seemed to know they had called me when I asked ...

Nope, no such luck. I'm pulling the cached copies - too manually intensive to update them, and given that the YQL problem is solved 99% of the blank page bug reports should be gone

regardless of all that @YiJiang ... tremendous job on assembling those, it's going to make elections much more coherent I imagine. Now to ask a somewhat silly question, did you by chance include analytics on those pages?
You'll likely want to know very well the viewer statistics of those pages

@drachenstern Dan added one after I moved over to his server

@YiJiang Yatta!

:-(

5:30 PM
That does figure doesn't it? Given what he does ;)
So my two curiousities of the morning: Italian Cold Fusion? As real as Italion Gelato?
And Matrix 4 ... are you excited or turned off?

@drachenstern Yup. Though he's not given me access to the data, he did say that hmm... 160 hits in less than an hour after that blog post

Gmail didn't put @RebeccaChernoff's mail in the Priority Inbox :( reply to her went delayed by almost 24hrs 'coz of that.

@YiJiang I'ld say give him some room to let him get his share of the credit too ;) ... you've done the actual work of the page and all that :p

Honestly, Matrix 2 had 30 seconds that blew me away. And then they never played on what it could mean. So they had one of the biggest possible "Wow" moments, and then just threw it away

I DEMAND PRIORITY #1!!!
3

5:32 PM
@Sathya Did you have the "Oy" filter on?
2

@ircmaxell but you saw the animatrix right?

@drachenstern I did stick a link to his profile on the footer, though he never really said if he wants any more credits

no

@Josh :)))
@RebeccaChernoff You can haz #1 PRIORITY!!

@ircmaxell Have you got a copy handy or shall I provide a rip and a dropbox later this week?

5:34 PM
@drachenstern Are you back to hell raising capacity? :) I'm excited, just 'cause.

@TimStone I hope so. However we have some new changes in meds while waiting on labwork results from Friday.

It was at the very end when he destroyed the robots in the real world. That to me implied one of two things: 1. He's still connected with the machines in the real world (where the movie went). 2. He's the "one" in a higher level matrix (they are in a world within a world within a world). So how deep does the rabbit hole go, and how can you ever know if you're in the real one...

I'm no longer taking Straterra. Instead we're going to see what Klonapin does for me for a few days

@RebeccaChernoff I'm unclear as to what we're prioritizing....so [status-declined]

@drachenstern: nah, I'm good. But thanks anyway

5:35 PM
@ircmaxell Did you see Inception? Same thing
@ircmaxell You're missing out but I'll take that for now. Lemme know when you change your mind

@drachenstern Ah, well that seems mostly good, then!

Yeah, but I think they pulled off what M2+3 could have been.
Inception was great, and he really pulled off that theme.

@TimStone I see that YiJiang took advantage of my absence to climb to number 8. I'll have him unseated by Wednesday. Sooner if I don't work for the next two days, claiming convalescence.

@TimStone @Sathya was referring to my email concerning meta.superuser.com/questions/1962/…

@RebeccaChernoff Ah ha. :p
@drachenstern Hahah

5:38 PM
@TimStone well ya know, gotta have priorities ;)

Naturally

Speaking of priorities, gotta go read the State of the Stack ...

spoiler: it's stacked

lol
I thought they started acquiring staff before Jan 2010

SU's Town Hall isn't gonna be as easy to schedule as SF's me thinks.

5:40 PM
Error 80070652

@RebeccaChernoff maybe have two?

Thank you Windows for this detailed and helpful message

Oddly I could've predicted that for you @RebeccaChernoff ... and SO will be worse
brb, troubleshooting

@RebeccaChernoff Informing candidates that a prerequisite for modship is giving up sleep should help.

@drachenstern I don't think they'll even bother for SO :P 30 candidates, seriously

5:41 PM
@drachenstern SF has people from all over too.

They've probably got someone from every continent

@YiJiang No, we're doing it after the primary stage, so there will never be more than 10.

@RebeccaChernoff Ah, I see

@YiJiang Good ol' Antarctic mods.

Yeah, 30 candidates would make for a pretty noisy discussion.
@RebeccaChernoff Think you can bribe @balpha into distinguishing somehow the candidate moderators during the sessions? What do I know, change their username colors to green or something.

5:43 PM
@badp Even 10 would. I mean, 10 is probably the most number of active users (not lurkers) here at the Tavern

@badp Blood red. They've been drenched in the sacrifice of our support, after all.

@TimStone No need to bribe for that.

give them... CAMPAIGN BUTTONS!

@RebeccaChernoff who tend to keep similar hours, no?

...Well I just found out that our CEO and I were lied to
is really pissed off

5:44 PM
@badp the backgrounds of their chat lines should be in either a marquee or a blink tag ;)

@drachenstern -1, not enough jQuery

Do you think that I can bribe @balpha with these?
user image
2

@YiJiang nah, I think 15 active at one time starts to be our limit. There's currently 7 or 8 depending on how far you count
@badp you can still use marquee or blink without jQuery? wow, color me impressed. I envisioned a page with those two functions defined by jQuery ;)
damn you sore throat and coughing, damn you!!!

:O
^- Part surprise, part my mouth being open awaiting unicorn cookies

@RebeccaChernoff Maybe with less snowflake cookies and more unicorn cookies.

5:47 PM
are those crowns on that platter?

bishops, rooks, and knights

rooks???

rooks.
oh, wait...
I was seeing two rows, but there's only one

I think you're mistaken there after reading the blog entry, but soooo giving that link to a baker friend of mine
@Shog9 yeah, the six oclock pair disambiguates for me
looking at 3 oclock I see what you saw

5:49 PM
Now I'm very disappointed.
"unicorn angel cookies" - pah.

What this means is ... needs moar unicorns!

needs moar PAWNS!

@Josh By a customer??

@Fosco worse...
I need some advice from those of you here that I trust... anyone who wants to help, please join me

$(".signature.user-140548 .username").css("color", "#00F")
(no, I didn't need 10 mins for that)

5:53 PM
that user id looks sooo familiar

Good lord how fast do you two become lurkers Tim and Badp?

My boss just sent me an email with the title "Is this your office?": gizmodo.com/5741712/…

@drachenstern ?

I think they may be confused about what direction time goes

5:55 PM
@MichaelMrozek uhh.. wow that's pathetic

@badp you're ghosting in that room
@MichaelMrozek yes, I lol'ed at that earlier

@drachenstern I just click on links, yo

@MichaelMrozek No kidding, WTF.

@TimStone As if you'd be using Yahoo

Kev
"We're going to be the reference section of the library, where you can reach experts and get definitive answers." - we need more litterbins in that section :)

5:56 PM
I know, right? I leave the gun ownership to @Zypher, too. :P

@badp Lil'... really really blue mod girl

@YiJiang although that only applies to existing nodes

@badp Livequery! Or just reapply it every half second

@YiJiang nah, just add a real new CSS rule

@MichaelMrozek There's a lot of things that are wrong about that article

5:59 PM
@badp just attach to the handler that handles new post loadings

@drachenstern Is there one? Because I don't think the chat js exposes one.

I have realized now that it is pointless to post questions on metastackoverflow. - Why do we have to be so rude to new users? Why can't we just humbly implement all their inane feature requests?

is document.styleSheets[0].addRule too complicated or is the problem it isn't quite enough jQuery?

everyone should own a gun

I thought someone scripted something for that in here about three weeks ago
@Zypher indeed.

6:00 PM
@badp That would work, though it won't be cross browser compatible

@YiJiang really looking forward to seeing a new SE site every week...

@drachenstern That would be me, possibly. Making use of the DOMInsertNode event to catch new messages

@YiJiang where's that support matrix again?

@YiJiang possibly so.

That still doesn't qualify as integrating directly with the chat js

6:02 PM
document.styleSheets[0].addRule(".signature.user-140548 .username", "color: blue"); is so much simpler than the alternatives, despite the lack of jQuery.

@YiJiang bah, details

eh, read only on just IE, supported elsewhere

@Shog9 At the bottom there's instructions on how to give them corrections. Hmmm...

"I'm afraid you're confused on a few details: SE has existed since 1991, and is actually owned by Rupert Murdoch not this 'Spolsky' guy. Ref: Wikipedia"

6:06 PM
haha, check out the link for submitting corrections. they don't encode.

@Zypher They don't... they don't let you interact with users, or potential investors, or customers... do they?

@PopularDemand why wouldn't they ... they're calls concealed carry permits for a reason :)

Is anyone seriously considering submitting a correction? Some of the errors are pretty egregious. Actually, I think that would be @RebeccaChernoff's job now, wouldn't it?

@YiJiang I think that would be Spolsky's job ;)

@drachenstern How did he manage to do the interview and not check that the newspaper had even gotten the name of the company right >_>

6:11 PM
@YiJiang I imagine he had to sleep and they posted it

Well, newspapers send a copy of the article to their sources before they publish them, no?

@YiJiang Not in America.
Not respectable ones, anyhow.

If you want to submit a correction I don't see a reason why you shouldn't.

@YiJiang you're assuming they have sources and arn't just pulling the entire story out of thier ass 90% of the time ... i'd say on average us media gets it right 2% of the time ... where the interviening 6% is twisting the sources words to fit what the author wants to say not actual fact
then again ... i may just be jaded w/ us media

6:26 PM

@Zypher I find that this is often unintentional; it's not humanly possible for a reporter to get the same perspective on a topic as his sources have.

...I'm not really sure which of those bullet points that pose is supposed to highlight.

@TimStone is it just me or is that image encouraging me to not-submit my job apps there?

@drachenstern I felt it was a pretty big fail too, yeah

Why do I have a half pound of medicine on my desk? #FAIL

6:33 PM
@TimStone clearly, "hand...jobs one-on-one...expert...access"

@Shog9 but if it's from her ... do they have any other "recruitment specialists"? #JustSayin

Hahah

when did this wretched hash-tag meme make it into chat?
@balpha, please tell me you're not planning on turning this into Twitter!

@shog9 about the time we discovered that it annoyed you.

anything that reminds me of twitter annoys me. Getting $1.40 change annoys me.

6:36 PM
#notmyfault

ok, 1mg of Clonzepam is maybe a bit much for me, next time .5mg should be a better fit ... :(
@Shog9 I did it
it's a bit of meta for chat.MSO

@Shog9 Ok, now show the court on the laptop where the bad website touched you.

#rchernsfault

not my fault

@RebeccaChernoff He hashtagged it, it must be true.

6:37 PM
heads to github to look for hashtag script

@RebeccaChernoff do you have the power to destroy a room?

Zypher steals candy from little kids #dontbelieveathinghesays

I have a handy bit of loss of manual dexterity atm, nearly the effects of being drunk, without the sillyness of alcohol ... oh this is going to make coding fun.

hey they where 18 and they wanted to give me the candy

Now I see why people abuse Klonzepam....

6:40 PM
uh, yeah... If there's one thing that bugs me about getting drunk, it's all the silliness interfering with my enjoyment of the clumsiness.

@Shog9 then abuse klonzepam ;)
@Zypher didn't we see you try this excuse a few months ago?

nah ... that was uhhhhh @Josh

9 active chatters, we have 9 chatters! Can we get one more active chatter in here to keep the discussion discombobulated?

Hey, don't drag me into this!
I even supported your hashtagging shakes head

Or maybe @Zypher, I know I just asked a favor of you as you were exiting the train Friday, but maybe you could delete my advice room for me? (@RebeccaChernoff is ignoring me)

6:43 PM
hah sorry ... @TimStone lemmie fix that

@drachenstern I could pretend to be two people, if it would make you feel better

@Zypher I will take blame for that, whatever it is :-)

haha

@Shog9 I already do ;) ~ the slightly zany guy who uses hashtags to annoy others, and the surly SOB who pounces on innocent users and castrates them out of turn ... so you're welcome to do so as well ;)

alright yea gimmie a sec to kill your room @Josh

6:44 PM
@Zypher wait

@TimStone don't shake your head, it won't get you as far :p

@Zypher @Rebecca is reading/deleting

omg more matrix movies (i realize im late on this one)

@Josh ... waiting

@Zypher rchern did it. Thanks!

6:47 PM
yep just as i was reading the juicy bits

Thank you @Rebecca, sorry to add extra work for you

errr, @Josh if you caught that skype addy, remove the decimal >_>

@Zypher how is the update?

@drachenstern got it, thanks!

@Fosco as am I, join the party

6:47 PM
just got it installed ... gonna play it when i break for lunch @Moshe

@Zypher mwuahahahaha

@Zypher I'll update you when we learn if they really are trying to screw my company over or not

so what are the internal islands for? cubefarm?

(I am hoping for the later...)

6:48 PM
@Josh we all are

@Josh yea ... unfortunatly that's the nature of business

Thanks :-)
@Zypher Sure is, especially when you're small

Great. @Zypher. I
I got more feedback from people, didn't have time to implement yet.

cool, i'll give you some more feedback when i get a couple more play-thrus in

And where's the community lunchroom/catering pit?

6:51 PM
@drach where did you get that blueprint?

It's from the blog post

@Josh Email away!

Posted by Joel Spolsky on January 24th, 2011

2010 was an absolutely amazing year here at Stack Overflow. We grew from 7 million visitors to over 16 million, putting us in Quantcast’s top 400. We raised $6 million in venture capital, and we went from three full time employees to 27. We built a 7500 square foot office in New York, and we launched a ton of new features and sites, like Stack Exchange, a network of 33 Q&A sites on diverse topics from cooking to computer science. Stack Exchange grew 51% in December alone. Wow.

The expert Q&A model that Stack Overflow pioneered is really working. The statistic I’m proudest of is the percentage of questions that get a good answer, over 80% (and many of the new Stack Exchange sites have 100% answer rates!) …

ahh our humble offices

Nice!

SFW?

Yes - if a little stereotypical (design wise)

Ah, the Sara Chipps site. I'd forgotten about that. It's... actually less pink than I remember it.

@Shog9 I'm still not clear on whether she's actually famous, or whether some people just treated her like a celebrity in chat because she's relatively more famous than them.

@TimStone thank you! Received and replied
