@MichaelMrozek, @radp , @PopularDemand - No, we get accused of being a voting ring because people make less than intelligent suggestions on Meta.

Anyone have a preferred place to but wildcard SSL certs?

I just spent several minutes and invested a lot of thought picking out Kleenex based on the color & design of the box. WHAT HAVE I BECOME?!

@DanGrossman $139 not bad!
Not bad at all!

updated link, $125 or $99/yr for 2 years

8:05 PM
@drachenstern That's silly. You should first buy Kleenex boxes that you like, then just refill them when they get low. That way you only have to worry about it once.

@DanGrossman Nice, I was paying $200/yr

I need to do something about this... I'm going to go through my ~900GB bandwidth quota at Linode in well under a month just on inbound bandwidth from HTTP requests

@DanGrossman - Simple. Stop spying.

@Moshe Well I can't do that. People are paying for it.

8:07 PM
@DanGrossman - People are paying to spy?

Paying to use W3Counter, yes

Ah well, raise prices? No clue.
Oh, wait, I know!

...wait for it...

facebook.com/AMBERalert < add it, now. [I feel better now for sharing, thanks for asking]

8:10 PM
@DanGrossman - Sorry, I don't know. Work on streamlining your HTTP requests.

@drachenstern What, why are you sharing?

1
Q: Objective-C methods that correspond to these JS methods?

MosheWhat NSMutableArray methods correspond to these Javascript Array methods? shift(); unshift(); slice(); splice();

@drachenstern They're the people who spam me with updates on divorce custody battles right?

@Josh since AMBERalert just hooked up with facebook

Uh oh.

8:11 PM
@Josh riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight ... wrong

AMBERalerts are announced on the radio, "a child is missing in [state] last seen on [date] at [location]".

That's the one

Apparently thousands of people have left webpages I'm tracking open in idle browsers for multiple hours, still pinging every 20 seconds. I wonder if I should drop them eventually.

IDK about your local area, but over here we get FCC alerts on our television which we can't make go away about amber alerts, which it seems like at least 75% of the time turn out to be custody battles and not real child abductions. Which means it actually makes things worse, it desensitizes people and then when there's a real child in danger, people are more likely to ignore it.

@DanGrossman - Yea, that's a good idea.
oy

8:15 PM
@Josh oh well we don't have that .. or at least, I never see it, hence a reason for me to want the FB version.

the starred list looks pretty random today
3

(redacted)
@DanGrossman Heh. smiles and walks away silently

@Moshe because of __________ what reasoning again?

(redacted)

8:17 PM
@Moshe I'll repeat... "The reason"?

@drachenstern - FB, while a great and powerful tool, epitomizes the lazy teenager with no life.

@Moshe I'll have you know I'm no teenager sir!

> In the first independent study of whether Amber Alerts work, a team led by University of Nevada criminologist Timothy Griffin looked at hundreds of abduction cases between 2003 and 2006 and found that Amber Alerts - for all their urgency and drama - actually accomplish little. In most cases where they were issued, Griffin found, Amber Alerts played no role in the eventual return of abducted children.

@drachenstern - I was not referring to you.

Now that was over 4 years ago, maybe it's better now. I hope it is!

8:18 PM
But I am an avid facebook user
2

@drachenstern I was, until SO chat came around ;-)

@drachenstern - Ah, well I'm talking about teenagers who are also avid users.

@Josh well I grant you that there may be little actual return in using amber alerts, I will never say that it has no benefit
I'm all about protecting the innocent

closes browser window, hoping it helps @DanGrossman's spy site a little bit

Oh, I don't think it has no benefit. But I think that overusing it can be very dangerous, because it then distracts from times it's really needed. Just like any alert system!

8:20 PM
@Moshe and I'm talking about general users of facebook. One class does not make the whole state a raving mad system. Shall I devolve into Godwin's Law?

@drachenstern Of course, same here :-)

there seems to be unusually high traffic across the board today, wonder if it's because of all the snow in many regions

@DanGrossman random stars means it's a normal day in here XD

What's the fastest way to check on the width of a window in px? I'm interested in Firefox at the moment, if that helps.

@PopularDemand on windows?

8:24 PM
@PopularDemand you should totally drop that and use jQuery

@Josh Yeah. XP SP3.

window.innerWidth I think (for the viewport)

Do you want firefox's window or the viewport?
or the display?

Not programmatically (but thanks). If I, say, don't have my window fullscreened, I want to know if I'm at 800px wide or 1000px or....

8:25 PM
ahhhhhhhhh the w link

window.innerWidth is the size of the viewport, which is the window minus the window border, i.e. the content area

No better way than writing a web page with a little JS, huh?

well if you had some sort of windowspy

I would hit print screen, paste into photoshop, select with the mouse, crop and look at image properties for the current image width

there are apps for windows that do the same thing, see the sysinternals toolkit
lol, that would work too

8:27 PM
@PopularDemand Somewhere I have a program that shows rulers onscreen...

alternately <alt><prtscrn> into paint.net expand canvas / auto crop

xScope for Mac but looking for the windows version

now that you've given us better information :p

@drachenstern Ah this would be easier @PopularDemand

@Josh "lazy" ;)

8:28 PM
lazy FTW!

Whoa, 1 hour comment discussion with a 1 rep user and now his code finally works and my answer even got accepted :)

@PopularDemand The Web Developer toolbar extension has a popup under Resize -> Display Window Size that tells you.
You can also enable it to show the window size all the time in the program title.

I think this was the ruler program @PopularDemand

@DanGrossman Yay for tabbed browsing!

I use the "Resize Window" extension in Chrome which has a little overlay showing the window and viewport size whenever you resize the window

8:30 PM
I think we have a winner in @TimStone, although that answer's not going to help me when I need to figure out the size of an IE window or some application that isn't a browser.
Gotta go turn Web Dev on....

@PopularDemand did you see my suggestion? Do you want the outside or inside view?

Pff, you should do that for real first install Linux, then grab the X11 source, hack into that (break some stuff along the way...) add some crazy hooks to get the stuff out (although there's already a function for that, who cares getTHingdaDongWindowSize() is a way better name anyways) then write a compiz plugin to get the stuff via a 6 key keyboard shortcut

^ what happens to disk IO changing from InnoDB to MEMORY engine for a single ~8MB table

@IvoWetzel because that would work so well on XP
@DanGrossman heh

@drachenstern Of course, there's a reason you install Linux in the first place :P

8:34 PM
@drachenstern I sorta did, but then I saw Tim's before I fully processed it. And I had Web Dev installed, just disabled, so I figured that'd be easiest.
Yeah, screenshot --> Paint --> Image > Attributes is a good one.

@PopularDemand I figured you'd like that more than 3rd party software
Damn it's almost 4:00 and I haven't written a single line of code yet today! And I haven't been chatting much either, WTF?

@Josh yeah I found a nasty bit of a flaw in one of our apps and it's driving me batty cos I want to "fix it" the "right way" ...

I've been in meetings, answering support tickets and doing maintenance (like ordering SSL certs) all day, I want to scream
Also, why can I never spell maintenance right?

Why can't somebody on this end spell attachment

If our code weren't so behind this wouldn't frustrate me so much

8:41 PM
attachement <-- because there's so few dictionaries

sucks at spelling

Q: What does the term "and free as in free beer" mean?

Kevin BoydMore often than not to the questions that I have put up on Stack Overflow the answer that I received had the term "and free as in free beer" in it mostly in relation to free or Open source software. How did the term come to be and what is its significance?

Kinda fun, I guess, but off-topic. (Another one of the many, many questions that indicate a need for an MSO --> English SE migration path.)

It's probably sad that that got more upvotes on meta than on Unix
7
Q: “free-as-in-speech” vs. "free-as-in-beer”

Renjith GWhat is the difference between "free-as-in-speech" and "free-as-in-beer"?

Although I guess it's much older

...wow.

@PopularDemand I never get free beer! >:o
@MichaelMrozek This question is underrated

8:56 PM
Does anyone know of cheap domain hosting for stupid jokes?

yourmom.com ?

yourmom | less

Errr.
I mean stupid domains like hastheworldended.com
Where the price of hosting reflects that it's actually just a stupid single page joke.

@mootinator I wonder if that side is Y2K12 proof

@mootinator or backwardsmile.info ?

9:01 PM
lol, yup

I forgot where I got that from but it was only like $2

@MichaelMrozek I guess expert Unix users really don't need to discuss that anymore :)

@Josh Actually, I could just set it up as a forward... Good point.

yeah that's what I did

@radp If you think our questions are about expert Unix topics you haven't looked at very many :)

9:02 PM
@MichaelMrozek eh, I've seen enough SO though :P

well then four hours of my life wasted :(
ah well, life goes on

Still, more people have probably been lectured to death on the topic there and find the n-bajilltionth reiteration pointless. Except for reps hoarding purposes obviously.

boss wants me to do email address verification, all but laughed at him

@drachenstern :-(

@Josh I see you know the feeling

9:05 PM
I do, sadly.

...aaaaaaaand I just registered 2unicorns1cup.com

oh god

@mootinator oh goodness
:)

@mootinator one can only imagine what happens in that depraved skull of yours

@drachenstern Yup.

9:09 PM
@mootinator whaaaa? whhhy?

What's in the cup? Unicorn.... milk?!

Oh god horrible visuals
runs screaming from the room

@Josh Birthday present for my brother in law... And I'm going to make it clean lol.

Guess those unicorns have more than one horn after all..
ahhhhhhh pictures...

Yaknow, literally 2 unicorns and a cup on the page.

9:10 PM
@mootinator Are the unicorns drinking from the cup?

@IvoWetzel DO NOT GOOGLE FOR UNICORN PICTURES THIS CAN ONLY END BADLY!!!

@mootinator Is it a cup with 2 unicorns on it?
3 upvotes for the most simple answer today...

I thought they might vomit rainbows into the cup, at most.

Come on! I want moarz
....
That's disgusting...

That's what unicorns do.
Vomit and/or fart rainbows.

9:12 PM
Great see what you have done

lol

Damnit... ok, here goes CSR generation attempt four...

The starred posts are full of unicorn stuff

Unicorns always get stars. We are on Meta after all...

>_>

9:13 PM
Ok seriously, regex + email ... ignoring "the only way to verify an email address is to send an email and look for the user to respond" ... is there a good canonical FAQ question I should read or should I just use [a-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+(?:\.[a-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_{|}~-]+)*@(?:[a-z0-9](?:[a-z0-9-]*[a-z0-9])?\.)+(?:[A-Z]{2}|com|org|net|edu|gov|mil|biz|info|mobi|name|aero|asia|jobs|museum)\b` from regular-expressions.info/email.html

Hey smilies! ^_` ^_{
@drachenstern That regex looks to simple, checkout

A: Regexp recognition of email address hard?

mmaibaumThere are a number of perl modules (for example) that do this. Don't try and write your own regexp to do it. Look at Mail::VRFY will do syntax and network checks (does and SMTP server somewhere accept this address) http://search.cpan.org/~jkister/Mail-VRFY-0.58/VRFY.pm RFC::RFC822::Address - a...

@IvoWetzel read the linked page

Ah, my mail server is so much nicer to use now!!!!!!

Good stuff. You wanna do mine now? ;)

NO THANK YOU!
One four-day migration per year is enough for me ;-)

9:21 PM
It's just my personal stuff, it probably won't be as difficult. :p

Q: Recent feature changes to Stack Exchange

devinbIt appears that there has been no move to create a formalized official repository of recent changes, so for now, we will be keeping track of it ourselves. RSS feed for this question

@TimStone Oh, ok :-)

Whose plan was it to split the answer in two?
...and put the recent data in the new +0 answer?

@radp Mine and Arjan's respectively.
I initially had it the other way 'round.
I split it because the old answer was approaching the 30k character cap.

@PopularDemand there's a cap?

9:22 PM
@PopularDemand I did wonder

You can see the discussion in the comments (and perhaps revision history).
Yes, questions and answers top out at 30k characters. Requests to have the cap raised or removed have always been declined.

@TimStone How many GB of email are you storing? Maybe I could work out some space for you ;-)

@PopularDemand Rolled back the other half of the plan then.

That's a good question. I have a lot of stuff on shared hosting at the moment which all needs to be migrated to Rackspace..But I've been lazy. :(

@PopularDemand Who needs more? What are you doing, writing the screenplay for The Stack Exchange Network?

9:25 PM
@Josh Steve Yegge. It's like you didn't even read!

Read? Pffft! Reading is so overrated.
Anyone else getting lots of chat timeouts today?

The two answers are the same now - I'm confused

@Josh no

Must be me...

Eugh

9:31 PM
@radp If you're done, I'm going to add the new content from the past four days into the old answer, and move the old info back to the newer answer.

@PopularDemand I already did the rollback.

@radp On my end, both answers start with Jan 2011.

@PopularDemand I pressed "Rollback" on both answers surely?

@radp LIES!

@radp Maybe you rolled back to the wrong version? Could you double-check?

9:33 PM
Or at least it seems not, anyway.

Ok googlefu masters ... a discussion on the differences of each major development platforms implementations of regex's and the core differences in each. Who's the FGIW?

@radp I believe you wanted revision 1 for post 74243.

@PopularDemand er, feel free to fix it :(
Sorry.

@radp Editing now. No worries, it's a confusing change to make.
I believe everything is well and good with the world (of question #59445) again.

9:42 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Thanks for letting us know what the tavern looks like when you're not in it. I was always a little curious

@MichaelMrozek cue the "little more dull" jokes? ...
nah
Ok, what's it called when ... a search box has a bit of template in there like "search" and when you onblur it that text goes away. What's the name for that?

@drachenstern I don't think there's a fancy term for it. "really trivial javascript"

@MichaelMrozek LOL

@drachenstern The name for the text or for the action?

9:44 PM
@TimStone not "blur" if that's what you mean

@RebeccaChernoff Looks like your new job actually does mean you chat in here less (the irony!)

@Josh It really must be fantastic working for SO if talking to us isn't the better option.

ahahahaha
Well to be fair I love my job, but that doesn't mean I don't also enjoy talking to all of you guys XD
Well I love my job, except when I don't...

@Josh well played

@Josh The joys of CTOism.

9:47 PM
@TimStone q:

When I have finished a server migration and the new server is 40x faster, I love my job ;-)

just type cluck() instead of click()

@TimStone Indeed :-D

whoops!

9:47 PM
;)

@Moshe is this for your chicken app?
3
@Rebecca but in seriousness, they keeping you busy, engaged and enjoying the work so far?
or do we need to yell at people for you? ;-)

I can post meta.stackoverflow.com/… all day long if necessary

@mootinator Should be centered, and more sprinkle and blinkle etc!

More layout. Hmm.

@MichaelMrozek those all have views tho :\
@mootinator needs more icecream

9:50 PM
@drachenstern rchern can only implement feature requests that have never been viewed? I'm very confused

the url says +views:0

@drachenstern I do have a project I'm, uh, supposed to be working on here...

@mootinator ... >_> ... but ... you had time for unicorns, don't you have time for two hot chicks? :p

@drachenstern Don't make me write down the reasons I don't have the time for that and draw freehand circles around them.

@mootinator poke poke
:p
That's ok, I'm working on a twitterclone for an internal alertfeed
and I had it mostly sussed out and the boss said "well why are you doing that" and so I lost like 4 hours due to misunderstandings :(

9:57 PM
> This video contains content from Sony Music Entertainment. It is not available in your country.

@MichaelMrozek Actually, Valued Associate Rebecca Chernoff can only implement feature requests that have never been requested. It's very technical and complicated, don't pay it any mind.
6

I hate the world for this -.-

@Josh No it's this:
    $('#showRequestFormButton').click(
    	function(evt){

    		//Hide the "show" button
    		$('#showRequestFormButton').fadeOut();

    		//animate the flyout width to the new, wider, width
    		$('#flyout').animate({
    			'width': 500
    		}, null, null, null);

    		//fade the hide button in
    		$('#hideRequestFormButton').fadeIn();
    		$('#requestForm').fadeIn();
    	}
    	return false;
    );

//Reverse everything
		$('#hideRequestFormButton').click(
    	function(evt){

    		//Hide the "show" button
Where iz deh bugez?

@drachenstern That means views >= 0; it's a hack to only show questions

ooooooh

If there's any upside to being in China, http://www.google.cn/music/homepage now works

If I owned a games magazine, I would hire Welbog to do the reviews

However +views:0 means +views>=0 is a mystery :p ... I would think +views:-1 ;)

in Let's get philosophical, 20 hours ago, by Five Golden Rings
Reviewed a bunch more video games on Steam. http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197963034532/recommended/

@Moshe Well first you don't need to pass in three null to make animate work

Ok

9:59 PM
Dec 2 '10 at 15:52, by Yi Jiang
@PopularDemand It's music search, but it also allows for free streaming and downloading of most of the songs found through it

@Moshe I see no cluck!

@drachenstern The + is a url-encoded space :)

@Josh - Sorry, this is the first jQuery I wrote, btw.

@PopularDemand No, I just wanted to view a video review of a old Super Nintendo Game, but it seems something in the video is copyrighted by Sony ...

@YiJiang - Thanks

10:00 PM
@MichaelMrozek >_> ... I knew that

@YiJiang Welcome back
2

@Moshe NP. I write far less jQuery than I should

@YiJiang - Anything else? My jQuery was working before I added those two functions.

@IvoWetzel Right, well there's no chance in hell we're going to be able to fix that text shadow bug, so goodbye body { text-shadow }
So erm... who's using a RNG to decide which post to star?

@YiJiang - I don't mean to be rude, but can you help with teh codez?
$('#showRequestFormButton').click(
function(evt){

//Hide the "show" button
$('#showRequestFormButton').fadeOut();

//animate the flyout width to the new, wider, width
$('#flyout').animate({
'width': 500
});

//fade the hide button in
$('#hideRequestFormButton').fadeIn();
$('#requestForm').fadeIn();
}
return false;
);

//Reverse everything
$('#hideRequestFormButton').click(
function(evt){

//Hide the "show" button
$('#requestForm').fadeOut();

$('#hideRequestFormButton').fadeOut();

//animate flyout width to the wider state
(posting for myself)

10:02 PM
@Moshe Stop repeating teh codez, I can scroll
Here's the bug:
	}
	return false;
);
stick the return in the function

Okay, thanks, lemme see.
Boom! works!
@YiJiang Thanks.

Oh, and have you considered using toggle instead of two buttons like that?

@YiJiang No, how would I do that?

@YiJiang But me wants his text shadows :( Stupidz Windowses

@IvoWetzel I blame Chrome, actually

10:04 PM
I gtg
@YiJiang - Thank you.

@Moshe Using a single button, use toggle to attach a click event handler that will cycle through each of the functions passed to it

@YiJiang Can't we ... detect Chrome Win? And disable the text-shadow? You know evil browser detection

@YiJiang - How so?

@YiJiang thanks
...wait for it...
Wow, first time. I should get a chat badge.
status-chat-badge

10:06 PM
Oh wait, hang on, it's toggle-event instead
@IvoWetzel Over my dead body, I'd say

now for the real test, how does my new page perform in IE8 ...
Yay, that passed :D

@YiJiang :D

@Moshe better yet we should get more chat stars!

@YiJiang Have you taken a look at the last commits on the next branch, I've updated like 6-7 topics

@IvoWetzel No time now, sorry. Will be back in... 9 hours. Cya

10:09 PM
@YiJiang bb

@YiJiang - How do I get the width of the browser in jQuery?
@Josh - Any idea?

The things my friends send me

@drachenstern I'll buy a photoshop

@radp I'm certain
the coloration is all wrong in places, and then there's the dithering
It even has ... gasp ... an example for just that!

Remember never to use document.width -- you can never know what browser bugs lurk beneath!

10:17 PM
I might indeed want to know the document width, there's no gaurantee it's the window width

Q: New Design Launched

JinHi All, Unix and Linux site has been officially launched!. Thank you for your design feedback and congrats! I ended up taking the mascots off the header. I agree with you that it made the site a bit childish, also it's hard to cover all the different OSes. If you have see any css/styling issue...

@MichaelMrozek Grats, CrossValidated. (points at favicon in onebox)

@drachenstern thanks

@radp Yeah, I noticed that too; Jin is fixing it

Jin
10:30 PM
yeah my bad on the favicon..
and unix is the first site I converted in LESS
well, @balpha did all the less conversion for the other sites, i just used his template

So if anything is wrong, blame him right? ;)

Hello
Who are we blaming this time?
Can we blame @RebeccaChernoff

I like Blaming @RebeccaChernoff
@RebeccaChernoff ):

@Moshe sorry, ideas on what?

Jin
10:35 PM
man, i wish you guys can see our awesome Wheel of Blame..

Me too!

Is half of it covered by the word Rchern?

At least I know I'm not on it

@RebeccaChernoff When can I badger you again about the question migration issue and faq editing issue?

10:38 PM
I can't possibly be to blame for anything because I don't do .. anything...

@MichaelMrozek YEY!!!!
Thanks @Jin!!!

@ChrisF I think you just did! Sneaky. >_< Though the latter is a meta post isn't it?

@RebeccaChernoff yes.

ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHH
I am really frustrated right now. Today has been going downhill rapidly
Where did that Zen Garden room go? :-/

What's up?

10:45 PM
Coworkers not understanding me, or me not understanding them, or something...
Clients needing extra work we can't bill more for...

I can go kick someone in the shins for you, but that might not be the best option..

It being almost 6pm and I haven't done any code yet...
@TimStone HAHAHAH

@Josh I like to look at it as only being 6 pm

...which apparently means the link won't onebox

10:46 PM
Right - I'm off

@MichaelMrozek Bah!

G'night

@ChrisF Have a good one
@MichaelMrozek Yeah shows as a 404 for me
I guess @PopularDemand decided people being relaxed was a bad thing :-p

@Josh There's some way to get it to show up, I don't have any magic meta powers
Maybe you have to click "show deleted rooms" on the room list first

Oct 13 '10 at 18:49, by Michael Mrozek
If only there were a room somewhere to experiment with these things. Some sort of box, optionally filled with sand

10:49 PM
@MichaelMrozek You have 10K?

He's got 11K

Oh, I didn't realize that affected deleted rooms. Never mind

@Shog9 Clearly one too many.

Yeah, 11K grants the rarely-talked-about "Works on My Machine" privilege

AH HA. My code is working correctly. Client is wrong!
I feel vindicated... yet, this doesn't solve the core issue
How do we explain it to them :-/
