9:00 PM
hehe

Rejoice Rejoice @Pekka is back! :-)

@The I actually just came in to randomly star a contribution!

Hahah ;)

But I will stay for tea.

@Pekka Awesome. How goes?

9:01 PM
ok which line is the notification disappear on in the userscript?

Quite all right, thank you! Lots of work, but it's okay. And yourself?

@Pekka very similar, working now (or trying to, @Rebecca keeps distracting me)

Yeah, her
I'm sure she keeps everyone from work with "Oy"s
That everyone is bound to star

@drachenstern 1071

We can't help it, she's making us do it!

9:03 PM
nooooooooooooooooooooooo
don't make me go find the link to Jeff's message (;

thanks

@Pekka I can't help starring Oy. I just picture Jeff getting all upset and storming around his office every time I do

@The yeah, that is a satisfying thought!
After all the deleting he's done
Culling

Damnit, we work our asses off to build this chat system to help people collaborate on new great ideas and all those hoodlums do is star stupid "oy" messages! AAARRRRGGGHHH!!!!

Q: Chat notification for Chrome doesn't go away, please change that

drachensternOk, we've been giving @marcGravell a hard time and we acknowledge it, so I had this bright idea to actually put in support ticket on it so SOIS can prioritize it. When the notification creates its toast it the toast should go away and we do already have a bit of precedent for it and there is alr...

Seems about right. q:

too much? not enough? just right?

Some Atwood-Balmer hybrid :-)

@The ahahahahaha!

@drachenstern Trying to think of some humerous rude remark :-)

9:06 PM
Somebody is burning through his daily star allowance...
3 hours to go till it is reset!

@TheUnhandledException one of my favorite high school teachers used to say that when we discussed english lit

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

I worry about what will happen to these people if they ever discover chat:

Q: -1 vote for questions about Stack Overflow

KeyurWhy did I get -1 vote for both questions I asked regarding Stack Overflow? Is it something like bullying on this site?

> Is it something like bullying on this site?

I should likely tag it with [chat] and what else?

@drachenstern "stfu-noob" :P

9:09 PM
@MichaelMrozek Sillyness

lol, oooook

I guess for now this is a worthy replacement of SO's version of it.
I mean, unlike SO's, this one generated rep.

I finally noticed the "desktop notifications" link under the star list, and then saw the pinned post about it two seconds later
I thought that was something added to the userscript

@MichaelMrozek It is, but Marc added it to the main chat too.
His version is prettier, but it's also more annoying. :P

They don't get cleared when you hit esc?
glares at @Marc
I'm probably repeating things that were said ages ago, so I'll stop now

9:15 PM
They don't get cleared unless you hit the x :|

@MichaelMrozek They don't for me in Chrome for Linux
I'm still using Pidgin for notifications as that gives me Gnome integration

@radp Who said they don't show?

@MichaelMrozek My brain. It autocompleted in the missing verb.

<retracted>

I actually get two every time, which is slightly annoying

9:19 PM
@MichaelMrozek I didn't at first, then I started to, so I disabled it

@MichaelMrozek it's okay.

Oh, it could be because I edited my message?

@TheUnhandledException It happens for every message

@MichaelMrozek luckily the notifications slide down so you should just be able to keep on clicking.

@MichaelMrozek Ah, ok, just a thought

9:19 PM
(oh and [status-norepro])

One of the duplicates has @TheUnhandledException's gravatar, and the other has the meta icon. Odd

so @Michael any news on when Unix gets a design???

@MichaelMrozek The userscript does one, the chat does the other.

@TheUnhandledException Jin posted his ideas a few days ago; he's revising it now

(I/@RebeccaChernoff haven't removed the userscript version yet)

9:20 PM
@MichaelMrozek Oh awesome! I should check those out!!

@TimStone I never had one before right now; did the link somehow enable both?

Q: Design Ideas for Unix and Linux site

JinHi all. I'm Jin, and I'll be working on the designs for the Stack Exchange sites as they graduate from the beta phase. Each site will have its own unique theme that will reflect its topic. However, all sites will share quite a bit of common elements so they feel like they're part of the Stack Exc...

Yeah, once you grant permissions it does it automatically.

@MichaelMrozek Yes. The permissions are granted by domain.

But the userscript doesn't ask for them?

9:21 PM
It does.

There was a button to ask for them.

It adds a link to the right of the existing buttons (send/upload/clipboard)

Oh. I don't have that for some reason

@MichaelMrozek -1 not enough acid green on black?

dang it..
I'm out of stars..
2

9:24 PM
@MichaelMrozek Huh. I'm not liking that design as much as I had hoped to... I'll need to collect my thoughts on why... I'm not sure what I was expecting or why this is so different from what I was expecting, but... I need some time to digest I suppose.

@TylerChacha told ya!
@TheUnhandledException One thing I don't like is the post voting arrows

+1 on your answer @MichaelMrozek, I'm not liking the O'Reilly feel, I don't associate Unix/Linux with O'Reilly books

@TheUnhandledException Gilles said something about that too. Although he liked it I believe

@radp those don't bother me that much. I do like the * for star
@MichaelMrozek He did. I (respectfully) disagree
I associate Linux / Unix with power, syadmins, freedom/free software, and hackers in general. I guess I was expecting something... I don't know, maybe some mix of Web Apps' and SF's designs...

I imagine the design for rchern.SE

9:29 PM
ROFLMAO

shakes head :P

@radp And what exactly is the topic there? ;-)
test failed

hmm no
no highlight, no ding, no desktop notification

@TheUnhandledException That's a secondary concern.

@DanGrossman ding din?

9:30 PM
no autocompletion for my name either
that worked, only @radp's failed

@DanGrossman I just autocompleted your name..

@DanGrossman he didn't reply
he just @DanGrossman ed you

So did @TylerChacha right? his dinged

oooh a flag! runs

9:31 PM
@DanGrossman yeah

Yeah, I didn't reply

there was no "You were mentioned by radp" one

Um, so somebody flagged this post:
however, I think the flag was for the next image

I flagged the image

radp's some kind of ghost

9:33 PM
what do I do? If I say the post is not offensive, I'll "break" his whistle; if I say it is, it'll delete the wrong message.
@TylerChacha me too.

@radp Say no; it's not. He should try flagging the right post next time

@radp Ask him to unflag?
or what @Michael said

I really don't like the name of the chat room..

@TylerChacha you're not a fan of reason?

It is very elitist...

9:34 PM
@MichaelMrozek It did tip me to an actual problem however.
It's better than 90% of flags out there.

@TylerChacha You must be new to the theist/atheist wars

@radp I'm still amused by the time that someone flagged a post just to demand an answer to a programming question from a moderator. :P

@TimStone Someone did that three times in two days on Unix; we ended up e-mailing him asking him to stop

@TimStone looks like flags get abused almost as much as stars...

@TheUnhandledException Almost ;)
@MichaelMrozek Oh wow, seriously?

9:36 PM
There should be a "starred comments by user" list somewhere

Some people...

@DanGrossman there is, I thought...

I did too, but now I can't find it

@TheUnhandledException Well, you can view the posts that you starred, anyway.

I see "things you've starred" but not "things you've said that others starred"

9:37 PM
Yeah, there's no option for that.

Evan Carroll is a part of Atheism.SE...

other than using javascript/jquery to filter the list of all starred comments looking for you name

@TimStone wait, you can view posts you yourself starred, or you @TimStone can view posts that I @TheUnhandledException starred...?

That's not making the site look any more attractive..

@TylerChacha LOL

9:39 PM
me > Is exchange down?
IT guy > seems so..... checking now
??? seems like they would know :(

he was playing tetris, not monitoring your email server

@TheUnhandledException The former. :P

I mean, I might be some overly biased religious dude .. but 1) They have a chatroom name that boasts superiority ... and 2) They have Evan Carroll and the second highest rep user...
They don't have a lot going for them at this point...

@TheUnhandledException I also have four notifications for this post :P

@TimStone really @Tim? So @Tim you're saying that every @TimStone shows a message like, "@TimStone you were mentioned?" Don't you think that's a bug @Tim? I'd think one @Tim notifcation is @Tim enough@Tim wouldn't you @Tim agree @Tim? @Tim? @Tim are you there? @TIM!!! ANSWER!!! @TimStone @Tim @TimStone...??

9:42 PM
Oh, for shame!
It does it once for the reply, and once for the mention.
And then again for your edit :P

Damnit, I was foiled again!

@TimStone that's more comfortable than I thought. In other news, do you like my new shiny animation effect?

Luckily it'll only show four at a time. :P

"@TimStone really @Tim? So @Tim you're saying that every @TimStone shows a message like, "@TimStone you were mentioned?" Don't you think that's a bug @Tim? @TimStone a surprise lurks beneath.

9:45 PM
@TylerChacha I just said that...

@radp Yes, it does.. ;)

I won't flag you for plagiarism @Tyler =p
@radp What's that from...?

@TheUnhandledException I fixed it

@TheUnhandledException when there are more than four notifications, all other notifications from the fifth on will pop up from the bottom of the screen as you close them.

@radp Oh, I thought "A secret lies beneath" was from some video game...

9:49 PM
@TheUnhandledException It probably is too :)

@TheUnhandledException Did I just send you like 5,000 alerts?

@TylerChacha Not sure, I have XMPP/userscript and sound off and was in Chat Feedback

@TheUnhandledException I mean like desktop alerts

@TylerChacha I only had those on for about 120 seconds :-p

I edited the message like 50 time
DANG IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9:51 PM
sorry you were wasting your time...
wait, no I'm not!
That's what you get for your attempt at annoying me ;-)

I can find more ways to annoy you...

Of this I am sure :-)

@TheUnhandledException <spoiler>Annoying is a MSO-ism for affection.</spoiler>

@radp Of this I am also sure :-D

9:54 PM
@TylerChacha The "What is this?" box is half off the screen with no horizontal scroll bar to see the rest of it

Tyler is that brighter now than it was before?
@DanGrossman not on mine, what browser are you in?

Chrome 8

hard refresh?
I hit my hard refresh to make sure I didn't see anything cached

Do it again

Refreshing fixed it
musta been an old stylesheet

9:55 PM
ohok

Because of another design I made, I had to center the box using something other than margin-left/right auto
Does it look good?

OY! Everyone of youse should have upvoted AND VIEWED this question! :p

@TheUnhandledException I know and I was so proud :D
protip: I realize sycophant is not used correctly there, but I bet I got more question views didn't I?

@drachenstern get 24 more and you get a badge :-)

@drachenstern from joy or sorrow?
@TylerChacha they voted to close @drachenstern 's question? I don't see that...

@TheUnhandledException guess. And I'll go ahead and weight that guess with a suggestion that the answer contain four or more letters from your two choices

10:02 PM
LOL

> noise or pointless 1
This question does not add anything useful; having it present on the site is actively harmful because it distracts from other more useful questions.

oy

Maybe I need 14 more rep...
No, I should have enough to view close votes...
How are you @Moshe?

@TheUnhandledException - Thank G-d, I'm good
Just finished a part of an update on a freelance job

10:05 PM
Glad to hear it

contracted to update an app.

@TheUnhandledException - Actually, unfortunately not really.
I want to send them the update for review, but Apple's provisioning profile is semi-broken
I can't create the necessary Ad Hoc profile.
It wasn't working, and I wasn't sure why the portal kept reporting an error instead of giving me the darn thing.
I was relieved and annoyed when the site updated with the notice of maintanence
@TheUnhandledException - I did get some fun stuff done though.

That's good.

Another one of my projects - I got a companion app going for my kiosk app
Bluetooth is AWESOME when it works

10:07 PM
This is true

I can download the information from my iPad kiosk app and take it with on my iPhone.

I need bigger flash drives...

Btw, for all of you mac users, a fellow SO-er started working on a desktop app that lets you know about rep changes.
@DanGrossman - You need DropBox
@TheUnhandledException - thanks

@Moshe I have dropbox, that's only ~3GB too
An 8GB or 16GB drive would be great

10:09 PM
@DanGrossman - Ah, you need to promote someone else's business so they reward you.
@DanGrossman - I have an 8GB

@Moshe SO Live! is a cross-platform userscript :P

@radp But does it create Growl notifications?

@radp - Huh? I'm talking about a native mac app that runs in the status bar
@TheUnhandledException - you know what I'm talking about?

@TheUnhandledException bah :P
although I could consider having HTML5 notifications instead. Maybe as a chrome extension :P

@Moshe I do. I don't want anything else in my status bar...

10:11 PM
I am burning a DVD to move 4GB once, such a waste

I'd prefer Growl @Moshe

@Moshe anyway, if you were running Gnome you'd have had one ages ago :P

@radp I'm running Finder, thank you.

grrr, what did I do in my own code from ages ago and I don't remember ... is $find a native javascript command?

10:12 PM
@drachenstern - which is why I gladly over-comment my code to the point of code smell

@Moshe yeah, I figured that I should likely add a comment ;)

@Moshe Gnome's a lot more than Finder

damn you google and your syntaxless lookup on characters

@TheUnhandledException - You can you gnome on Mac?

@Moshe No, not that I know of
but actually that's a very interesting question for Apple.SE :-D

10:14 PM
ok

Gnome is a whole Unix environment. The Gnome equivilenet of Finder is called Nautilus

Q: Is it possible to run Gnome on OS X?

MosheIs it possible to run Gnome instead of Finder on Mac OS X Snow Leopard? How?

Gnome provides a unified look and feel for applications, theme manager, and more

Oh, well ,that;s what I meant
Now, you've reminded me. Nautilus.
Heh, got an upvote and I changed the question.

@MichaelMrozek could better explain what Gnome is than I, I'm doing a poor job.
@Moshe Yes, the upvote and the star were mine ;-)

10:16 PM
@Moshe Technically yes, but I don't see why you'd want to :)

You paid an hefty premium to use OS X... you might as well get your money's worth :P

@radp - True, but it's paid for itself already :P (Apps, videos etc.)

@DanGrossman Ah ha, let me go answer every "Finder sucks" question now :-)

@TheUnhandledException - You might get some rep for that, oddly.

10:17 PM
I'm sure I would

Okay, got to get a ride back now.
Thanks for listening folks. This has been another edition of... Moshe pops into the Tavern.

Can someone tell me where I can find the posts i lost rep on?

@ninjasense On your profile page or the audit page

What's the difference between "chunk white albacore" and "solid white albacore" canned tuna?

@DanGrossman Solid is much better
I got chunk once and it was mush, it was gross

10:21 PM
I see

it was almost shredded, it was awful
But you could also ask on cooking.stackexchange.com
@Dan are you answering @Moshe 's Nautilus question? Cuz if you're not I am :-D

I was about to, then I got distracted
You can do so :)
> The Hot Girl Effect and Networking sirdg.com/2010/12/the-hot-girl-effect-and-networking

@ninjasense did you see where/how to view rep changes?

@TheUnhandledException I think so...im more interested in findingmy negative rep...is there a way i can just view the posts where i lost rep?

@ninjasense I don't know of a way to see only posts where you lost rep, but, you could search /reputation or, for recent posts your profile helps a lot
@ninjasense You lost rep for:

Okay, anyone want to walk me through turning my existing directory into a git repo?

They are neat birds
The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), also known as the Peregrine, and historically as the "Duck Hawk" in North America, is a cosmopolitan bird of prey in the family Falconidae. The Peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching speeds of over during its characteristic hunting stoop, It is a large, crow-sized falcon, with a blue-gray back, barred white underparts, and a black head and "moustache". I think I misplaced some code... I know I wrote it, I just can't seem to find it anywhere. >:o
I swear this module had the code, but, maybe I'm wrong, maybe it was just a different module
Maybe I only dreamt that I wrote it. Wouldn't be the first time...

@TheUnhandledException how were you able to see the questions i was neg repped on? i only see a date next to the rep?

Q: How can I request a reputation recalc?

David LockeThe accepted answer to the question, "How often is reputation recalculated?", states that your reputation can be recalculated by a mod on request. Other than posting this question, how can I request this?

Q: How often is reputation recalculated?

tvanfossonSaw a comment in the question about increasing the cost/effect of downvotes on reputation that rep recalc is irrelevant because, in their words, it will "only happen 2-3 times in a lifetime." I was under the impression that it happened relatively frequently. How often does reputation get recalc...

@ninjasense yes, you do have to request a recalc, here's the question I was thinking of:

Q: How do Deleted Posts affect rep?

DonutSay I post an answer on a recently asked question, yet a FGITW scenario means that so do about a half dozen other SO users. My answer might get a handful of upvotes, but ultimately someone else gets the green check. Since all of the answers are roughly saying the same thing, I go ahead and delete...

10:54 PM
@TheUnhandledException You don't have to request any more. Just use stackoverflow.com/reputation (for example) and click the button at the bottom of the page.

Awesome, thanks @ChrisF!
I've never done it before, so

@TheUnhandledException It was discussed on MSO, but if you missed it you'd never know
