[ SmokeDetector ] All-caps title: UCLA UI DESIGN MAJOR? by user74554 on ux.stackexchange.com

user163250

7 hours ago, by josilber
Given that I am only catching the very laziest of plagiarists, I would assume there's a lot of plagiarism we haven't found.

user163250
7 hours ago, by BoltClock's a Unicorn
@josilber I've found that the only way to maintain my sanity around here is to forget I ever made that assumption for a while

user163250
LOL

Boys are assholes. I got ghosted by this jerk last night.

user163250
@BoltClock'saUnicorn no kidding.

[ SmokeDetector ] Few unique characters in answer, repeating characters in answer: CellRendererToggle when TreeView changes in Python by manu on stackoverflow.com

user163250
12:47 AM
@josilber another red flag for me when I find this sort of stuff is when someone has a very eloquently written answer, and then you look at the rest of their content (or even within the same answer), and the style of writing suddenly changes to be extremely poor.

user163250
Like, this sort of pattern,

@Cupcake For sure!

user163250
> Very eloquent paragraph about how this solution will change your life!

user163250
Next paragraph.

user163250
> It might help you!

user163250

<facepalm>

Haha it might help you
I recently enjoyed stackoverflow.com/revisions/33057900/1 -- I have no idea why I never thought to preface my answers with **********BEST ANSWER EVER****************

user163250
Are you using SEDE queries to dig any of this stuff up by any chance?

No
I spend almost all my time on the site sifting through stackoverflow.com/tools/new-answers-old-questions

user163250
Huh, now there's an idea.

And so while I was in there I noticed somebody had copied "0 down vote" at the beginning of the answer -- stackoverflow.com/questions/24507917/…
and then I was like, huh, that would be a really easy way to catch the very most lazy plagiarists on our site
who copy another question, don't notice that they got a bit of extra text, and post it

user163250
12:52 AM
@josilber oh yeah, I see that kind of stuff every now and then too.

yeah
so that always means they copied

> This page requires more privileges

so I just did a search for anything starting with that text

user163250
@hichris123 gimme a sec.

12:53 AM

user163250

Oh cool.

@josilber Weird.

user163250

user163250
What a gold mine!

12:56 AM
Have at.
0
A: MYSQL -> Getting top value of each "group by"

JackOJackI don't know if I am understanding you correctly but I assume you mean something like this: 1 down vote accepted select racetime, odds from tom_cards where odds < 2.5 group by racetime order by odds desc; That would fetch you the highest odds in every group. To get the lowest odds just change...

user163250
We need a system to record user ids for discovered plagiarists.

user163250
It makes digging up their other content easier.

@tchrist It's from copy & pasting since if you catch the edge of the score, it'll copy that too.
Typically it's 0 down vote favorite though.

user163250
Plus we can check for recidivism.

@hichris123 There was a "1 down vote accepted", too.

12:58 AM
Also, interesting avatar @tchrist.

user163250
But then there's the whole issue of publicly shaming certain users...

@Cupcake Don't do that, right.

user163250
> 1 down vote accepted

user163250
LOL

user163250
1:02 AM
I wonder what the mods' reaction will be when they suddenly get a new flood of plagiarism flags in their queue, lol

@Cupcake Yeah, it's the place on this site where I've found the highest quantity of low-quality stuff
(the new answers to old questions list)

@Cupcake "I thought that Cupcake fellow was eaten a while ago. Guess not."
5

because you get a lot of folks with "I have this problem too" answers

user163250
You know how some sites are set up so that if you copy text from them, there's JavaScript that automatically inserts attribution into your clipboard?

user163250
1:04 AM
Stack Overflow should do that.

user163250
Now there's an idea...

@Cupcake That might depend on how closely they pay attention to certain trends you notice when glancing at the 27 hits’ usernames.

Q: Alternative ways to manage lots of Passwords since Lastpass was hacked & now acquired

Alex SThere is a lot of debate on Reddit and other sites about whether the hack was or was not bad based on lack of salt to uncover the password hashes. Also, LogMeIn seems to have poor reputation & ratings as a reliable company. I read a lot about KeePass in sync with DropBox/ G Drive/ OwnCloud etc....

user163250
10:12 AM
Time spent reviewing a question?

well, I mean the resource (availability) of the votes
Or should I not care about him anyway

user163250
As in how many votes each user is allotted to cast on a daily basis?

Yeah, more-or-less
but if it's too trivial, I'll just delete ^ and move on

user163250
I stopped reviewing most questions for closure a long time ago, let me see how many votes I actually have.

user163250
I don't remember if you get more if you're a high-rep user or not.

user163250
10:16 AM
I get 50 votes per day.

user163250
But I'm also well-past 25k rep.

user163250
It looks like everyone gets 50 per day.

user163250
That number is a lot higher than I remember...they must've bumped it up for Stack Overflow over the past year.

I guess I lost my argument, or just plain unclear... moving on~

@Cupcake Yeah rep doesn't make a difference, but SO is higher than most (all?) other sites - the rest are either 24 or 25 (I probably remember seeing 24 left after the first vote)

user163250
10:19 AM
Right, I thought it was supposed to be 25.

user163250
So I guess they must've doubled it for SO sometime over the last year.

user163250
I could single-handedly dupe close 50 questions a day with that many votes...such power ...must...not...abuse...

Yeah not sure. For the queue if it's > 1000 long you get 40 reviews so you need the extras to be able to do it, not sure if you get extras on the other sites if the queue gets that long.

user163250
@AndrewT. I looked at the Ada question and the one the other person thought was a dupe.

user163250
The "original" question doesn't even have anything to do with Ada at all, it's language-agnostic...not really an appropriate dupe target in this case, in my opinion.

user163250
10:26 AM
Beyond that, "not a real question" isn't even used as a closed reason anymore.

I can agree with that..

user163250
By today's site standards, I know a few users who might even reopen that question, despite its poor quality.

The room needs to be part of the chat.meta.stackexchange.com domain, not chat.stackexchange.com.

Cuz?

user163250
Convenience?

user163250
Between all the chat domains, I spend 99.99% of my chat time on chat.meta.stackexchange.com.

user163250
I very rarely visit the other ones.

Oo gosh, SE chats are like mazes now

user202362
so many of them & everywhere

@Cupcake I'm guessing the lack of mod powers on chat.meta is a big factor of why it sits over on chat.se

Anyone know if it's possible to create a String[] in Java with n elements all containing the same string?

If only there were a web site where one could ask such questions...

Dunno, haven't done Java in a while
Might be able to do that using some Array util class
Can't even remember the name
Slaps face

meh
@Andy nah, if it gets to the stage of asking a question, it's probably going to get for-loop answers.

2:02 PM
Yep

so Arrays.fill?

		String s = "asdf";
		int n = 18;
		String[] a = new String[n];
		Arrays.fill(a, s);
		s = Arrays.toString(a).replace(", ", "");
		s = s.substring(1, s.length() - 1);
		System.out.println(s);
seems to work

2:11 PM
So much work.

s = s.substring(1, s.length() - 1);
What is it for, @bjb568? ^

Seems to remove the first and last char?
Hey! Idea!
Java eval!
Capture the output, so anything to be captured should be printed
I'll see how that goes

@YummyUnicornRainbowTails but why? So if n will be 2, the output will be "sdfasd"?

Anyway toString(a).replace(", ", ""); looks wrong, since it assumes the .toString() will behave in a very specific way
What if a future version will make the .toString() join the items by newline instead?

2:19 PM
No, normally in Java toString doesn't take any args
They should make array.join
Something like that

@YummyUnicornRainbowTails I know, in this case he's using the static method of Arrays helper

user163250
@bjb568 might depend on which version of Java that you're using.

user163250
My Java is really rusty, I haven't really used it much since college.

user163250
Not to say that Java is useless once you're out of college. It just depends on what language your job uses.

Android devs use Java everyday

Q: Will Java still be relevant in 5 years?

kiamlalunoWill Java have the same importance it had in the past, or it will be less relevant than nowadays?

And an ultra popular thread on reddit of course reddit.com/r/learnprogramming/comments/35u5bv/…

Guess that means we’re all in the clear now.

Fortran (previously FORTRAN, derived from Formula Translating System) is a general-purpose, imperative programming language that is especially suited to numeric computation and scientific computing. Originally developed by IBM in the 1950s for scientific and engineering applications, Fortran came to dominate this area of programming early on and has been in continuous use for over half a century in computationally intensive areas such as numerical weather prediction, finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, computational physics and computational chemistry. It is a popular language...
