6:00 PM
So here's how we know where the current app is:
O:\Development\Apps\Current Compiled Builds\appname
I shit you not

Right then. Email that I should have replied to 3 days ago finally replied to.
can chat again. (;

Good stuff. Plus the spaces in the path name, awesome. :P

@RebeccaChernoff nice!
@TimStone oh yes. Windows environment FTW

@RebeccaChernoff You'll need to chat harder...'cause I have some bad news. :P

6:03 PM
Seems that they may have merged SOIS internal chat with chat.MSO, because you've been very quickly overtaken by the boys in blue. ;)

status-maximum-chatting

@TimStone I don't understand the intent of this message. Is it in code?

@drachenstern Mod display names are shown in blue

Hmm. Is this supposed to bother me?

6:04 PM
@RebeccaChernoff No, I was just saying you need to chat more to regain the top spot. :p

status-rchern-devastated

@TimStone ah-ha

48 mins ago, by Tim Stone
Though on second though, I totally should have had @RebeccaChernoff write the post, and then gone to actually ask myself on account of the repz. :P

@MichaelMrozek thanks

I was even waiting for you to post it because I thought you said you were! (;

6:05 PM
I actually said "To Webmasters!"

Which you for some reason took to mean that I'd put in effort, instead of being a sign that you should go post on Webmasters and I'd take credit for the idea. ;)

> I'm going To Webmasters to ask this very question!

I'm confused, she seems to be at the head
I also figured I was doing worse than I am
lucky #13~

@drachenstern Those are only people who are currently online.

6:08 PM
@TimStone shhh don't spoil my illusion :p

@drachenstern By the way, hg archive exports an unversioned copy of a given repository...so depending on your environment I guess you could automatically archive certain pieces from dev into the directory that you build from? Not sure if that's the "proper" way, though.

@TimStone #31 isn't as sexy as #13 ;)
@TimStone no kidding, that's probably what I've been wanting instead of hg -clone and delete .hg
should really read more docs

@drachenstern That's setting me up for a comment, but I'm going to bite my tongue. :P
@drachenstern Yeah, I haven't actually used it, so results not guaranteed, but if my understanding of the command description is correct it may be what you're looking for.

nothing like doing a rollup count in a sproc only to look at the header row and realize the rollup is part of the schema but unused to-date
ok peeps, I'm outtie for a bit, gotta go get some keys! Hoping they are actually there or this is a wasted walk
call? what call? That would be pointless!

> I disagree. STACK OVERFLOW IS HEREBY CANCELLED. – Jeff Atwood♦

6:13 PM
Hahah, good luck!
@RebeccaChernoff Where is that? :P

@RebeccaChernoff I kind of can't believe that question got 11 upvotes

If I want an iPad but don't need an iPad but I buy one for my wife who won't use it much do I get an iPad and my wife's appreciation?

Ah, I see now.

Q: "Venn Diagram" on SE About pages is not actually a Venn diagram

Mitch SchwartzThis is a small point (some would say pedantic) concerning the following diagram that currently appears on the About page of Stack Overflow and other Stack Exchange sites: (This is an attachment. Here is the original link.) It is labeled as a Venn diagram, both by the name of the file (venn-d...

Aye, hahah.

6:18 PM
(;
Hrm. Userscript can't just look at the page title and get rid of anything before a "-". The question title could contain a "-" and if the question title also contained the tag, then you'd be chopping off actual question title
Though easy enough to just pull from the question title element.

@RebeccaChernoff I did it with:
in The SE Tavern on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 2 hours ago, by Michael Mrozek
$('title').text($('#question-header > h1 > a:first').text() + " - " + $('a[href=/]').text());

@MichaelMrozek Pro jQuery right there.

I'm a master of calling .text(), apparently

It's a difficult skill to master.

6:24 PM
Oh right, I never added my codez to the userscript

I need to do a pull
Should I wait or do you want me to do it now?

If you want to do it now, that'd be cool. :)

did something more dangerous. q:

I see that ;)

Rule #1: Don't f it all up unless you can fix it. (:

6:27 PM
I'd say that I never do, but that's far too untrue for me to even joke about. :P
But yeah, I'll be careful, heheh.

IE8 is broken, time to install IE9.
I could try rebooting

Hey everyone, can't stay long, I've been chastised for not getting enough done this week and being caught chatting online =o

Or clearing my cache
But I'm going to go install a beta browser before trying any of those things.

@TheUnhandledException work is overrated

6:33 PM
but @Rebecca if you modify this to include balpha and Robert's points, then I will accept it

A: Why is the first tag sometimes in the <title> tag of some questions?

Rebecca ChernoffI believe they've done it for SEO reasons to try and stop the scrapers being ranked higher. As for the ones you linked that don't have it, seems like if the tag is already in the title, it won't duplicate it. I've asked a related question on Webmasters.

@CodingGorilla True that
@Rebecca specifically:
> This is correct. This was done because the search engines like it that way; for purposes of SEO: to optimize our search rankings

> "seems like if the tag is already in the title, it won't duplicate it" -- that's correct.

takes out "I believe" and "seems like" and hits submit. (;

Hahah

I speak with authority!

6:35 PM
Ola

@mootinator That's definitely the first step.

Also I was reading Unix.SE earlier and I realized, @RebeccaChernoff must have contributed to Linux!

A: Any funny Linux one-liners?

frabjousThese are all taken from here. A lot of these don't seem to work on newer shells, but they're still possible to laugh at. % make fire Make: Don't know how to make fire. Stop. % why not? No match. % gotta light? No match. % !1984 1984: Event not found. # (on some systems) % How's...

% \(-
 (-: Command not found.

Hah :P

@Zypher +1 for Cartman, but -0.5 because I was hoping it was something to do with Rovio! even though there was all the indication in the world it wasn't. :P

6:39 PM
@TheUnhandledException, I edited.
I support @TimStone's -0.5.

@RebeccaChernoff Awesome, have a nice big green to add to your collection

@TheUnhandledException I would not go there even for proper smileys. q:

Awwww, you windows fangirl you (-;
> I speak with authority (thanks to comments from people who actually do...)
XD
I love revision notes, I have been getting more and more snarky with what I put in there, LOL

aww man ... that quote is so old it took effort to find a good one
:(
(and if you're gonna minus 0.5 at least make it for being on myspace)

I still don't believe my freehand regex didn't garner more upvotes. Meta is having an off day ;-)

6:43 PM
I was going to give you -0.5 for that too but I felt it was unfair ;)

@Zypher Good point. That's another -0.5 for you.
LOL.
Don't be so nice @TimStone. q:

I've been told to back out of my niceness commit, sorry @Zypher

OK thanks @Rebecca! I hope everyone else's day goes well, I need to dive back into code. Catch you all later!

@TheUnhandledException See ya, be productive!

@TimStone Working on it ;-)

6:45 PM
Though that sounds a little more direct than "be well"...I say it with the same intention :P

Right now, they're one and the same for me, haha

I can take my licks
The myspace things is my own fault for not ... reading the link

@Zypher Good, good. Just in case you decide to take revenge and shut off a server on us or anything, remember that @RebeccaChernoff is the one who doesn't like coffee.

Hahaha.
If Zypher shuts off a server, I'm blaming it on David/Jason for giving Matt a badge for the alert(false). I fear that all the team members will try to get a badge... |:

Heheh
Hmm, this Careers posting always amuses me:
> Flash Actionscript Programmer for Internet... at Mercedes-Benz (New Jersey)
FOR INTERNET!
(It's actually "...for Internet and Digital Signage")

6:51 PM
See, shutting off just one server won't actually do anything
... i can get your ip though ...

Is that what you use to justify it with? It won't do anything so I'll just play around and turn off this server today?
You stay away from my ip. |:

Yes, my IP is a closely guarded secret.

why doesn't hitting refresh on FedEx's site make the packages get delivered faster!

6:56 PM
Haha.

@BrantBobby Hahah :P
THIS. IS. INTERNET!!
Oh, hm.

Yeah, chat really doesn't like exclamation marks inside links.

Put the bold outside the brackets?

@RebeccaChernoff The link parser doesn't like the lack of space before the [ apparently.

6:59 PM
I tried that (or so I thought) but I also had an extra space between the [] and the ()
So anyway, what I was going to follow that link up with was: That's what I hear in my head every time somebody uses "Internet" without "The", or even worse, as a verb.

You can use Internet as a verb? o_o

Improperly, sure. Just internet it and find out.

dies inside

No no no. You have to google it on Bing.

That's what I meant. You have to internet it.

7:04 PM
I rather like that; you can use it for any action that involves the internet. "Do you want a copy of that file? " "Yeah, just internet it to me"

@BrantBobby bah, they should've linked to the welcome to the internet blog post instead :(

Reminds me of when Scott Hanselman said "google it with bing" in the MVC2 intro videos

It's snowing, hooray!

7:19 PM
I hope that was sarcasm, the snow here is brutal - i witnessed 3 accidents on the way to work!

Oh...well, that's rather unfortunate. But no, I'm fine with snow. :P

I like snow assuming I don't have to drive in it or shovel it out of my way
They should invent snow that only falls on lawns and fields, while avoiding roads and driveways

Hey, you backup peoples
So Triton keeps a list of all the notes in a key called thread_index

roads and driveways could just be covered, or paved with that heated copper piping underneath that they put in basements to keep the floor warm.

7:31 PM
it has a list of all threads IDs and tites
would it be effective to duplicate that index?
as a backup?
I realize if I just duplicated everything that happened to the main index, it is useless
because if everyone was deleted from the main index, everything would be deleted from the secondary index
I guess the question is, when/how will the secondary index be updated
Maybe it would be a index that nothing got deleted from
And someone just told me they could make Triton in a night.. Hah...

Hey all, there was a blog post about stack becoming the biggest tech site on the web but I can't seem to find it, anyone able to point me in the direction?

@TylerChacha Hah?

It took over slashdot....but maybe I was on crack..

8:03 PM
@slotishtype is that what you wanted?

8:32 PM
Wow, sorry guys, didn't mean to drive you all away :p
I see everyone is getting more work done than I am ;)

@drachenstern Yes...work...

sorry was watching the big lebowski
whatcha say?

@TimStone but ... I don't wanna. I do have keys tho ;)
And I have fixed four bugs since I heated my food
'Allo Josh

OMFG, I am having one of those days....

Very nice. :D

8:34 PM
Hey @drachenstern

@TheUnhandledException join the crowd. Also: Vent

I just made a major flub up... as per usual for me these days. LOL. Any SVN experts here?

@TheUnhandledException @TimStone pretends better than me, ask him ;)

I tried to unlock my laptop's screen, using synercg (a keyboard screen sharing keyboard program) from my iMac. I guess it didn't take and instead, half my password ended up inside a code file in my IDE
And was committed to the repo
facepalm facepalm facepalm facepalm facepalm facepalm FACE-PALM!!!!!!!

Well but it was only half a password yes? So unless the password is "tittyfuc*er" or something in that vein then what's the problem?

8:37 PM
Can I grep the repo on the server and remove it?

Q: Subversion: Retract Accidental Checkin

marcogYou're using subversion and you accidentally checkin some code before it's ready. For example, I often: a) checkin some code, then b) edit a little, then c) hit up, enter to repeat the previous command which unfortunately was a checkin. Is it possible to retract such an accidental checkin from t...

does that help?

@drachenstern Thanks. almost helps, issue is:
> No other subsequent revisions have been committed

@TheUnhandledException I think that the only safe way to do it in Subversion is to svnadmin dump, make changes, and then reload the repository..

I concur
dump the repo

Yeah. I was afraid of that. Looks like I'll need a new password then, LOL

8:39 PM
@TheUnhandledException Ouch. Hilarious, but ouch.

I just wouldn't worry about it. Who and how often do they go through the old repo checkins?

It could have been worse. I'm working in a branch only I have access to for now. It could have been one other devs were working on...

True.

@GeorgeMarian Hey, if I need to make a major mistake, at least I can share it so others can get joy out of my stupidity ;-)
@TimStone Yeah, grep didn't turn up anything anyway

@TheUnhandledException No complaints. I needed the laugh. :)

8:41 PM
Meh, only half your password? (;

@RebeccaChernoff Not exactly half. I'm not going to say if it was more, less, or how much of it. I've already given enough information to make the situation less secure :-)

Heh.
What repo did you say this was? (;

and it was >35 chars too, LOL.
@RebeccaChernoff It's the repo I am never going to give you access to!

At least it wasn't an IRC window.

@BrantBobby hunter2?
@RebeccaChernoff it was http://josh.gitlin.name/svn/garbage_disposal -- there, hack away (again)

8:44 PM
35 chars? half of the password?

@BrantBobby I've pulled that before. For a while I started making sure IM/IRC windows weren't in focus when I locked my computer, until I fixed the keyboard capturing

@GeorgeMarian Entire password was over 35 chars long

@GeorgeMarian he obviously committed the same password 5 times ;)

@drachenstern lol

don't you love when you can swear you've checked the same line into a file like six times already but it's not in the repo?

8:47 PM
@TheUnhandledException Yeah, Subversion stores transaction information in a database. The only way to get a plain-text-ish view is by dumping, which you can do selectively with svndumpfilter
@drachenstern Did something fail, or have you gone crazy? :P

@TimStone I think so

@TimStone I was afraid of that. Oh well

@drachenstern ;)

I'll shuffle this branch around before giving anyone access to it, LOL

Wait, are we playing (F | T = T) & (T | F = T) ??
@TheUnhandledException lol

8:49 PM
@TheUnhandledException I mean, it's not terrible to do...presumably you have access to the repository server...but I guess it'd depend on how important it was to you.

@TimStone It's probably about time for a new password anyway :-)

So that last question of mine prompts me to crack a joke about non-CS wives being abhorent to those sorts of answers, as we CS people tend to do ... but then I had the thought: Do non-CS husbands behave the same if CS wives do that?

This is probably a sign ;-)

@TheUnhandledException As would be the fact that you're comfortable with the password and don't notice where it's getting keyed in at ;) ... :p ... has it been 45?
So @RebeccaChernoff do non-CS dudes get upset at (F | T) yes responses or do CS chicks just not answer like that?

@TheUnhandledException Heh :P

8:51 PM
@drachenstern Oh, yes, I know, this was a total doofus error

@TheUnhandledException if I didn't make those daily I would be worried :P ...

Man, microsoft does not want to make getting a user's primary AD group membership easy, do they?

@BrantBobby ehwut? I didn't think it was that hard

@drachenstern say what now?

@BrantBobby AD has primary groups? I did not know...
What does primary status mean for a group?

8:53 PM
I doubt any other devs will ever notice anything strange about the SQL statement SELECT $table.* FROM $table RIGHT JOIN hunter2hunter2!1234512345 ON $table1.id = $table2.font_id...

@Shog9 Yup, and they're associated with the user in a completely different way than non-primary groups are.
As far as I know it means nothing, and the hacky nature is a workaround for the fact that multi-value properties can only have 3000 values

great. One off-the-cuff comment, and you've now made me paranoid about 5 years worth of membership-checking code.

so groups can only contain 3000 members, which doesn't jibe with the fact that "Domain Users" is supposed to contain every user, and plenty of orgs have >3000 users, so...

@RebeccaChernoff :393007 @drachenstern Did something fail, or have you gone crazy? :P > :393008 @TimStone I think so ... notice a single response to a question with two predicates. Nominally the answerer should ack the appropriate predicate when answering the question, or neg the appropriate predicate, as ... appropriate. However I've noticed a tendency of us CS geeks to not do so and it be acceptable. But with non-CS I haven't noticed that same acceptance.

the primary group is a property on the user object that just contains a rid, and to figure out what group that represents you have to concatenate that string value to the end of a freakin' sid and query AD for that SID, which gives you the primary group

8:56 PM
@BrantBobby Ah... Well, my important logic only checks that the group has rights to a resource - so provided the internal ACL-checking is aware of this implementation detail, I should be fine.

(which in 99% of cases is usually Domain Users, the default)

@RebeccaChernoff But I'm a CS-male, so my experience is likely to be different from that of a CS-female, so thought I would ask you if you had noticed if CS-females tended to do that too ... and if so, do non-CS people give you funny responses?
seriously chat, you think I'm spamming with two longish quotes?
@TheUnhandledException probably not

@drachenstern besides, we're not paying them to review all the old svn commits ;-)

@BrantBobby so you only need two queries to the AD container?
@TheUnhandledException exactly

Yeah, but concatenating two strings together to get a key? What the hell is up with that?

8:58 PM
@drachenstern, after reading all of that, I feel as if there is only one response.

This experience has given me a good idea for a new password though.... IWillLookBeforePressingEnter!#!IWillLookBeforePressingEnter!#!#IWillNotPressEntereNowUntillIAmVerySure...
That should be long enough...

Mind you, this is the first time I've done any AD programming that goes beyond IsInRole(). For all I know, it's all like this.

That response being...
Oy.
