@Braiam A snowball in a shape of sphere is melting with its volume decreasing at a constant rate of 4 cm s-1. When its radius is 5 cm, find the rate of change of its radius.
studying (is) hard

That's easy.
You should learn math before the test anyway.

It kinda is, except I already forgot most of it since it was taught last year.

@Unihedro radio or diameter?

Find r in terms of t and find dr/dt, easy.

@Braiam Derivative as an instantaneous rate of change

12:19 AM
Oh, the volume is decreasing at the rate.
Then you just relate v to r and dv to dr.

Apparently there's a "Long Path Tool" spammer.

The spammer has many accounts on SE

user259867
gone

user259867
@Unihedro V = (4*pi/3)*r^3. So, dV/dr = (4*pi/3)*3r^2. This means, the rate of change of volume is (4*pi/3)*3r^2 times the unknown rate of change of radius, say x. With your data, -4 = (4*pi/3) * 3*5^2 * x....

user259867
Put -4 there because decreasing.

12:23 AM
:o

v = 4pi/3 * r^3, so dv = 4pi/3 * 3 * r^2 dr, so dr/dt = dr/dv * dv/dt = (4cm/s)/(4pi/r^2), so @r=5, dv/dt = (4cm/s)/(4pi/25cm)
This is like, chapter 3 of my calc book.

user259867
No, we must first find the rate of growth of the queue when it contains x=70 posts.

user259867
Actual reviewing can wait.

And project its size with a Taylor poly!

12:26 AM
What is the function of the size of the queue in perspective to time?

@Unihedro It's one of those word problems where you have to figure it out!

user259867
Taylor polynomials aren't great for extrapolation, btw. It's better to fit something (a polynomial or another type of function) with least squares method.

@Fundamental wuts dat?

user259867
@bjb568 You got some data points (x_i, y_i) and want a polynomial (say, cubic) that mimics this data. The polynomial looks like p(x) = ax^3+bx^2+cx+d. So you take the squares of differences p(x_i)-y_i, sum them over i, and look for a,b,c,d that minimize this sum.

12:29 AM
@hichris123 why?

Huh, his approach of posting the advert on only xcopy questions sounds like it's a person with honest recommendation, but did it in the wrong way.

@Fundamental kewl, how?
Looks like a bunch of unknowns.

Dead

cv-pls too

user259867
Yes, four unknown variables. So it's a multivariable minimization problem -- which you can learn about in multivar calc. In a nutshell: there are four derivatives to equate to zero, so you have as many equations as unknowns.
And the best part about squares is that the derivatives are linear functions. So the system is linear.

su answer gone too

@JanDvorak No...

12:31 AM
@hichris123 rec-tool, isn't it?

@Fundamental Oh, so it's like the same as my optimization problems except you're optimizing everything and get a system of equations in the end.

user259867
Yes, it's like that.

I was going to edit it, but I got so confused so... nah.

I still don't get how that's a valid problem to be put on my precalc exit exam from a long time ago…

12:33 AM
Which one, the snowball?

It's uni's snowball.
I don't think I complained about that exam before.

Wait, you got that question in an exam before?

Yeah, something like find the line of best fit.

Interesting!

And I was like, ok, I'll just sum this up and then brain explode because complicated and I gave up on it.
I didn't really know calculus then.

user259867
12:36 AM
@bjb568 I described the process from the fundamentals. But if one follows through with the calculations and solves the linear system (which is 2 by 2 for linear fit), the result is a cookbook formula.

user259867
If one memorizes the formula, calculus is not needed. But there's no fun in that, of course.

And you know what everybody does with formulas.
(forget them or not learn them in the first place)

I still don't know calculus, but I have sufficient / limited algebra skills to work with; We're not really dealing with all of calculus yet, just differentiation and integration.

In mathematics, differential calculus is a subfield of calculus concerned with the study of the rates at which quantities change. It is one of the two traditional divisions of calculus, the other being integral calculus. The primary objects of study in differential calculus are the derivative of a function, related notions such as the differential, and their applications. The derivative of a function at a chosen input value describes the rate of change of the function near that input value. The process of finding a derivative is called differentiation. Geometrically, the derivative at a point is...
... Oh.

user259867
12:37 AM
Differentiation and integration is calculus.

Wait, but I thought it was a subfield of calculus, not all of it.

> The integral is an important concept in mathematics. Integration is one of the two main operations in calculus, with its inverse, differentiation, being the other. Given a function f of a real variable x and an interval [a, b] of the real line, the definite integral

Or... Eh... Never mind.

Integration!? oh no

Uh… isn't the first sentence there kinda POB?

user259867
12:38 AM
No, because it rests on experience of many experts in the field.

Hebrew (/ˈhiːbruː/; עברית ʿIvrit [ʔivˈʁit] ( ) or [ʕivˈɾit] ( )) is a West Semitic language of the Afroasiatic language family. Historically, it is regarded as the language of the Hebrew Israelites and their ancestors, although the language was not referred to by the name Hebrew in the Tanakh. The earliest examples of written Paleo-Hebrew date from the 10th century BCE, in the form of primitive drawings, although "the question of the language used in this inscription remained unanswered, making it impossible to prove whether it was in fact Hebrew or another local language". Hebrew had ceased to...

Q: Stack Overflow as a class assignment?

David PfefferI'm a professor of Computer Science at an American university. I teach a variety of courses, ranging from Intro to C++ to Advanced TCP/IP Programming. For the upcoming semester, I was considering making it a semester-long assignment to either answer a certain number of questions, or earn a certa...

People seem to be nice on the weekend. This is boring.
3

3:58 AM
Bad idea to make it an assignment IMO. SO isn't everybody's cup of tea. Every tag has a community around it, and one may or may not like the community. In my case, C++ is very close to my heart because I learnt it from my dad. I don't answer C++ questions on SO, because the community around it will dilute my fondness of the language and it's personal significance for me. I only answered one C++ question, got a nice comment from Pete Becker which me very happy, and I stopped with that :)

^
It might also lead to Meta posts like "my professor says I need to get 400 rep by tomorrow: help!"
I think it's a tool that programmers should definitely know how to use, but making it an assignment may have unintended consequences (good and bad).

I think I haven't asked questions about either work or school
I've only asked about things that personally interest me
