@Sompuperoo This somehow reminded me to check whether "whore" enables auto-nuking a comment. It does, but on Stack Overflow only.

@Behaviour oh cool, thanks yea I've tried many others before but didn't find any except for the regular f*** sh**

@Moosemaniseatingpizza that is an answer , it says to use opacity

@Sompuperoo If it was the only answer posted there, I'd say keep it -- but now it's completely redundant after answers with more content have been added. The FGITW had his 5 minutes of fame, time to go.

That said, is the question really Too Broad? Most likely a dupe of something, but what's too broad?

@Behaviour dup/why isn't code working .. would've been better options yea

@Behaviour naw.. on some site you should be able to.. there's an easy gold badge for flags/voting/etc
you seem to be very close to the Electorate on MSE

user259867
@Sompuperoo Thanks, will get to it!

Hi all! :)
Idea: If you downvote on a post and comment, then you should get a reward of a point or two — as a thank-you for explaining your downvote. Agree? DIsagree?

ahmed?
@unforgettableid Disagree. This has been discussed before, (excluding the +1 /+2), there is no way to detect if you left a useful comment or not...
I could just leave "jadiofjasoiej ajsfio jasiofdjaos fjdaiosjfd aojfdaos" as a comment and get the +2

@Sompuperoo Fine. How about this?:
If you downvote and comment, and if your comment gets at least one upvote, then you should get a reward of a point or two.

2:49 AM
@unforgettableid that would be a better option, but we don't want to incentivize people to downvote stuff so they can earn more rep, would be a disaster , good posts being downvoted just for rep accumulation

sees great post
downvotes
makes funny comment
comment gets votes because it's funny
"yay moar repz"

@TheGuywithTheElfHat Good objection. OK: how about this? If you downvote, and add a comment containing the string "-1", and your comment gets at least one upvote, then you should get a reward.

to complement the feature: feature request to -50 rep if the comment is deleted due to flag as rude/offensive/no constructive
(not that I agree in the first place though)

@unforgettableid But then you're saying that you downvoted.
People don't like getting downvoted

user259867
@unforgettableid Well... some people that I will not name think you should get your comment blocked in that case.

2:58 AM
They get mad at downvoters

we could just prepend -1 to every single comment automatically

"You forgot to subtract the variable. Do x = x -1"

@TheGuywithTheElfHat Well, then the downvotees should post better questions and answers.

Also, "-1, not enough jQuery" is the type of comment to get upvoted.

@Behaviour Too bad for the unnamed people. :)

2:59 AM
@TheGuywithTheElfHat and rightfully so
@Behaviour s/people/person

@AndrewT. Not every computer algorithm can work perfectly in every situation.

@unforgettableid Exactly.

I don't get the point of this.
Why do we need more comments?

@bjb568 The point is to encourage downvoters to say why they downvoted.

3:01 AM
@unforgettableid Why is that important?

user259867
Trivia: Shog's -1/+1 post is at -71 right now. The most downvoted question on meta.SO is at -72. So... close

Perhaps we need StackBot to downvote and comment automatically

@Behaviour that link totally breaks for people sorting by 50 questions per page

@bjb568 Constructive criticism is helpful to the authors of poor posts.

3:03 AM
@unforgettableid Rarely.
@Sompuperoo Who doesn't sort by 50 questions? O-O

@bjb568 Please elaborate?

user259867
@Sompuperoo Fixed the link by changing it to search.

@bjb568 apparently someone with unorthodox @Behaviour's

@unforgettableid Users are either good enough that they don't post complete utter crap or bad enough that they can't accept constructive criticism. People that post incomplete utter crap just get mad and self-vandalize when you constructively criticize.
3

@Behaviour I did +1 it at the beginning b.c I didn't think it through at all and left an off-topic answer/comment flag rant that might actually be getting approved somewhat by the end of the year, so I changed my vote to -1. Now it's the most downvoted.

3:06 AM
@bjb568 Some seemingly-good questions by good users -- e.g. "Can G-d ever take on a physical form" -- get a lot of downvotes. It's not always clear why.
@bjb568 What does "self-vandalize" mean?

@unforgettableid can't comment on that one. out of my area

@unforgettableid In this context, "do bad things". Specifically, replace the content of their post with asdfasdfasdfasdf or something similar.
@unforgettableid also out of my area

@AndrewT. (You need not know anything on Judaism to comment on a Judaism.SE post here in this chat room. Don't worry: no matter what you say, you won't offend me.)
@bjb568 Well, if someone vandalizes their own posts, they'll get even more downvotes. Eventually, the network might stop them from making new posts.

@unforgettableid Nothing ever works out that perfectly.

@unforgettableid But I can't judge if that post is good or bad. I can only think that the downvotes perhaps were done before the final revision, perhaps on the original post.

3:12 AM
@AndrewT. Ah; I didn't think of that. Could be.
@AndrewT. Perhaps we should allow moderators to reset the vote total of a downvoted question to 0 when they edit and fix it.

Mods can't be everywhere at once.

@TheGuywithTheElfHat We can allow them the option. Just a checkbox. They need not exercise the option. :)
@TheGuywithTheElfHat Anyway, you haven't convinced me that my original idea is (all in all) more bad than good.

Why is this feature request locked?

3:40 AM
Not that it matters much, nothing useful additional was likely to come out of what's there.

Idea: Votes on late answers should count more than votes on early answers.
Idea #2:
Users should be able to put a bounty of real money on a question. They could use any major credit card.
Minimum bounty: one dollar. Maximum bounty: unlimited. (Corporations who need quick help with a business-critical problem could choose to spend large amounts.)
Stack Exchange would keep 33% of every bounty.
[unforgettableid reads "Offering actual money as a bounty".]

3:57 AM
No, I don't want SE/SO to include real money, but feel free to create an SO-clone with that feature.

@AndrewT. Hmm: there are some open-source Stack Exchange clones out there. Maybe someone should install one on a server and add a "real-money bounty" feature.
@AndrewT. Another idea: People should be able to put real-money "charity bounties" on any question. (Minimum bounty: $20.) Stack Exchange takes a cut, and the answerer can direct the rest to any US registered charity of their choice.

There is an amazing post by Shog, let me find it
Why offering actual money as bounty is a bad idea: meta.stackexchange.com/a/25621/245167

@unforgettableid Why? It could be gamed.
@unforgettableid No.

@bjb568 see my later idea, about the money going to charity instead.

IF YOU DONATE TO CHARITY THRU A THIRD PARTY THAT DOES NOTHING BUT FORWARD A PERCENTAGE OF WHAT YOU GIVE TO AN ACTUAL CHARITY, UR STUPID

@bjb568 For all kinds of health advice, see Drupal Answers
7

@bjb568 The asker's goal is not to donate to charity. The asker's goal is just to get a fast answer. The respondent's goal is to favor, say, the whales over the homeless.
@Behaviour you need only click the "Flag" button. :)

4:09 AM
someone still downvote the spam there. poker face

Also, are you aware that most employers have restrictions on what kind of stuff their employees can contribute in? Employees can't participate in anything that gives significant monetary benefits @unforgettableid

@unforgettableid I don't get the point of it…
@InfiniteRecursion Which countries?

@bjb568 Askers can get quicker answers, and respondents can help out their favorite charity.
@bjb568 Now am I completely clear? :)

@unforgettableid Askers who want quick answers are attracted, site quality goes down. Respondents donate to… partially SE… and nothing constructive really happens.
@unforgettableid Do you realize how annoying edit pings are?

@bjb568 As someone else once said -- 99% of SE questions are already asking for information which already is available somewhere else on the Web.
@bjb568 Not until you demonstrated it just now :)

4:13 AM
@unforgettableid Yeah. So?

@bjb568 This might increase that number to 99.1%. Well, fine.
@bjb568 Question quality would decrease, but only slightly. Plus, answer quality would increase.

@unforgettableid How?

@bjb568 Answerers would feel happy about helping their favorite charity -- and so perhaps they might write more high-quality answers.

@unforgettableid I don't think that would be significant.

@bjb568 not sure, but I have read it in similar discussions that employment terms hamper some users when doing something for money is concerned.

4:18 AM
Hm… I wouldn't know anything about it.

@InfiniteRecursion Anyway, if the money goes to charity, then the employee isn't getting it.

Uh... I would donate to charity irregardless of SO. The question is, why put real-money into SO?
To put it bluntly, money is evil (no, I am not referring to any religions, etc.)
There were some who even trying to hack whatever they could to get more unicoins.

@AndrewT. regardless

@AndrewT. Why pay money? To get more and better answers.

@unforgettableid two good communities which are free of evil money are wikipedia and SE sites, can you name any good sites which give options for "real money" and survived?

Q: Add a realtime answers tab to stackexchange.com

UndoWe already have an awesome realtime questions tab for every question that comes in over the whole network. But in the spirit of Optimizing For Pearls, Not Sand, shouldn't we also have a realtime answers tab? It'd be really neat to see the answers coming through for each question in the network,...

@SPArchaeologist That kind of voting fraud is never allowed. And you know that. It is about genuine new questions with better answers.

@SPArchaeologist It will get merged instead of only closed as a duplicate.
And merged questions are... Well, not good.
@PatrickHofman Pretty sure it's a dupe. Saw a similar version around MSO in the past. Searching...

@Unihedro No need to. There is already a dup.

@PatrickHofman Still think that the new one should be merged down to the old. Not the new "taking the place" of the old one

A few of the Python guys have written canonical questions because old answers either were generally poor, or multiple answers had different details. In which case, the canonical Q+A ended up bringing everything together. But they were pretty exceptional/thorough.

must sink @Infs battle ship

@Ffisegydd There really needs to be more well-put answers. Some of these times I google around for a Java problem, and either I don't find any satisfying solution at all, or I find an awesome answer which was critical and thorough and accounted for what I needed - and these are always either Jon Skeet or some canon builders.
What was a great idea was to close as duplicates - this brought traffic back to the best answers (supposedly...) so they are more visible on search engines.

Yeah exactly, it's not necessarily a bad thing to make a new Q+A and close old content using it. But it should be extremely thorough and cover edge cases etc where appropriate. I can't comment on whether the new C++ question covers everything. But just being "better" than an old answer is not, imo, enough.

there should be a way to go back through closed questions that are closed for things other than dup, and either close them as dup, or have like an additional close as dup

9:35 AM
Then again, this is different, as the answerer isn't self-answering, instead he's just answered someone elses.
@Sompuperoo It would also be nice to be able to add additional links to a dupe close after the fact.

@Ffisegydd yes, and have them appear just like/similar to a question closed as a dup... not only a comment

440 linked questions, so many dupehammer'd with it

A good example of a canonical Q+A in Python is Kevin's here. It's a question that comes up often and has been answered in the past, but never in such detail.

9:39 AM
I'm pretty sure there are only ~12 [java] users who has a dupehammer and their own dupe bank, but Jon Skeet has to be one of the few users who actually close so nicely in a way that helps.
