@Bart I can tell you. That's really simple. I don't have a feeling that my contribution has any value. No matter which way you write your answer - it will go unnoticed. I can tell you what is frustrating: you spend a hour writing good correct answer and... nothing. No response from the OP, no votes, no attention at all. Yes, you can show off for a while in a chat advertising your answer, promote it in a seemingly irrelevant meta post and get some profit out of it. Unfortunately I find this way disgusting. @nicael After my first answer in that thread got deleted (-90 to me) I decided I don't have to provide QA services to SE for free. At least as far as that vanity page is concerned...
I had an idea I was hoping to vet a little here. It would be nice to have expanded chat support for feature development, but it isn't really a priority for SE. Perhaps it would be possible to get more support for chat if chat's feeds system were to show an ad every once in a while.
Every time I see a sponsored post in the middle of my Tumblr or Twitter feed, I get irrationally angry. Doing the same thing in our chat... no, thanks. :)
@TravisJ Possibly, but the chat usage is so low that ad revenues would be negligible anyway. Let's focus on the core problem here - what features do you think are missing from chat? I'm sure there's a long list. Chat could ... use some work. We just had better priorities.
A topbar in chat. An expanded chat profile instead of just the single box. Easier integration when in multiple rooms at once. Cross room communication. Expanded posting and usage statistics. Expanded per user settings. Expanded message settings. Dedicated room wikis.

@TravisJ I don't think showing ads would help with that. :) Plus we do have other devs... It's less an issue of people and more an issue of "oh god we have so much other stuff to do". Although balpha did spend some quality time on a few chat improvements recently.
Ideas for monetizing chat: - partner with Pizza Hut, for a sponsored Pizza Bot. Lets you order a pizza via chat and provides a helpful play-by-play of your enjoyment for the benefit of those who didn't order one. - charge folks for extra privileges. Such as being able to post multiple messages back-to-back without getting throttled. - implement long-requested stab-in-the-face protocol. Then charge for protection.
