@Shog9 hm, apologies if you thought anything I said was discourteous, but you're right, I need to be doubly careful since he can't defend himself.

@AnnaLear Same question as I posed to Shog

@ɥʇǝS not directed at you specifically - just wanted to clarify what you'd observed since it might give the impression that he could defend himself here if he wanted to.

@SomeKittens whether that phrasing is appropriate? in principle, sure. fine. however, I'd question whether or not that's a discussion that belongs on SE chat in the first place.

@Shog9 I get that, I had just thought the system automatically carried it over, only to remember that only applies to parent sites.

7:01 PM
@SomeKittens so, you're expressing a feeling and then asking a question which... I'm not sure follows from it. That's a bit sketchy - I would say at minimum you'd want to shore up the connection there before asking the question.

@Shog9 ah, I see. Good point.

@Shog9 Good point.

@AnnaLear good point.

Offensive A (90.9%): *** ********* * *********** **** ** *** *******, by ****, on windowsphone.stackexchange.com.

@AnnaLear Well, it's about proper behavior as a developer (specifically a game dev in this case), so I'd think it would be on topic.

7:02 PM
Is Posts.ClosedDate cleared when a post is reopened?

user259867
@JasonC Yes, it's Null on any non-closed post.

@Pham mm, a bit over the top on the censoring there no? I don't get anything useful out of asterisks... (how are you regexing answers @Sam?)

I personally hate the attitude of "let's make sure everything said publicly must have repercussions on unrelated personal connections" that, sadly, has become somewhat commonplace on Twitter - IMHO, it borders on harassment, if not dancing cheerfully across that line and off toward the distant horizon on the far side.
3

@Rafflesiaarnoldii Thanks.

user259867
@Pham Looks like normal feedback; par for the course for WP apps.

7:03 PM
@Shog9 Yeah, especially the whole Mozilla/Eich mess.

At minimum though, it stifles discussion, reminding me of the stories I heard as a child about folks encouraged to "report on" their neighbors for various... beliefs or activities that weren't acceptable to the greater community.
@SomeKittens yeah - that is not a good example for anyone to follow, IMHO. No one came out of that looking good.

A: Is there anything SE can do about this spam?

Sue B.I sent JonathanHayward the "spam", although I thought I was helping. I saw his posting about Tiger/street conversions, so I offered a big chunk of free lookups/conversions/exports on our servers. Since SE hates posting commercial plugs, I went from his question to his profile to his web site to ...

okay...

ditto to that.

This seems pretty resolved to me, thanks go out to everyone for helping me figure things out.

pst I wont post anymore related to the GG/A-GG discussion. I feel bad to an extent since I posted the link originally. But as SomeKittens said thanks for the clarification on the matter.

7:10 PM
@Loktar I hope no one's claiming that the link was the problem.

oh no, sorry not to even get into that discussion. heh I'm just saying I will refrain from the subject regardless since I originally "started" it I guess.

@ɥʇǝS that asterisk censoring was my idea, we don't like seeing offensive stuff in the transcript. The uncensored version is in the LQP HQ, once it's human verified, it comes here santized for flagging, 6 flags and boom!

its more heated than religious/political topics currently

The problem was not the message of "This repo is inappropriate", it was the phrasing used to convey said message.

The link was not an issue in my eyes. It's the "blown up out of proportion because somebody took a poorly worded joke personally" issue.

7:12 PM
@Loktar FWIW, I believe Arqade's chatroom eventually ended up banning that topic completely because, best intentions not withstanding, folks simply could not keep the discussion constructive.

@SomeKittens thank you as well for the painstaking clarification.

@Shog9 hah yeah I didnt even consider how it would be taken on a chat such as Arqade
its definitely closer to home there.

Which is a shame - it's always a shame when folks can't discuss something politely, focusing on issues rather than individuals, but particularly so here when that is such a core part of our philosophy on the main sites.
But, I see why they did it. As you say, the entire discussion appears to have become overly emotional for many of the people involved.

@Shog9 Yikes - that sounds like a HUGE mess.

@Shog9 I've always been under the impression (wrong word?) that those who cannot control their emotions in a topic discussion are usually wrong (subject to topic/opinionated discussions) or are just not worth discussing with.

7:13 PM
@SomeKittens yeah; I wasn't involved, but it didn't look like fun from afar. They handled it well though.

@Shog9 Glad to hear it.
So GG discussion isn't banned (outside of Arquade) but we should be especially careful when discussing it. Sounds good to me!

+1 ^ sounds great.

@SterlingArcher sometimes that's true. Some topics are too emotionally charged on both sides to really tell.

I am not happy to see some of the aggression that came from the 3 people involved in the earlier drama, but I am also not happy to see that it spawned from referral link tracking of one who initiated a list of "idiots" but when somebody (with a poorly worded joke) disagrees, it's game over.
But I am willing to let it drop, for the sake of everybody's sanity.
This topic is more volatile than two polar resistant relgions going at it, which is shocking.

I heard even ISIS has been staying out of GG discussions :P

Sam
7:16 PM
@ɥʇǝS Yeah, I should probably just censor out the found word/term instead.

@Shog9 whoa, are you serious?!

@SterlingArcher generally speaking - and I'm saying this for the benefit of a few people here who I know are room owners - if a problem in chat comes to the attention of folks outside the room, order within the room has broken down badly.
Y'all almost never want us moderating your room - we're disinclined to be delicate about it.

can we censor "gamergate" with something like "tomato soup"?

@Shog9 Chickenbuttgate was clearly a sign that order within the tavern has broken down badly!

clearly
@NickDugger I vote for "chickenbutt"

7:20 PM
@Shog9 the only issues I've seen in the past was the bot welcome incident, and now this. I love it when mods come in, because typically they're funny, nice, and get rid of pests (aka the swastika bug)
But I feel like in this instance, the outside problem was spurned from a heavily opinionated source.
But that wasn't my issue
My main concern was the heavy handed approach from the beginning, without the understanding that it was a poor joke taken way out of context

that wasn't a bug. That was an actual person creating lots of new accounts.

@JanDvorak sorry yes, brain fart. Abuse, not bug
Please let me know if I am assuming too much, I am trying to be absolutely respectful and not cause issues. Like Kittens, I just want to understand.

@SterlingArcher Pfft, it was an awesome joke.

@Shog9 Ha. Thanks for this.. It made me lol.

hey man, I'm an addict - you do not want to get between me and my beans.

7:23 PM
@Shog9 Granted, not that your purpose in life is to provide humor for us.

^ Yes it is.

Hmm, there still is the faint smell of drama in the air ... did I miss something?

@Shog9 Yeah, unfortunately.. you're talking to a 2-3 cup-a-day regular.

@Pham Minorly amusing, but still naa.

I just lol'd

@Bart Yup, you done missed your chance to talk about drama. The current topics are coffee, tragedy involving cats, and combinations thereof.

wow. It actually got deleted

7:26 PM
@SterlingArcher Who else feels like an appropriate reply is "BUT WHAT ABOUT THE KEYBOARD???"

Will that site be scratch and sniff @Shog9?

gosh I sure hope so

@Shog9 is there a way I could ask you a question in private?
I don't wish to bother you, of course. I won't be offended if you say no.

@SterlingArcher email is great for that.

Speaking of brown.

Thank you

@Mooseman Makes sense. I don't currently have CV privileges (or an account) on SO ;)

7:48 PM
@InfiniteRecursion oh, censoring it is a fine idea, but I'm not so sure doing the entire thing accomplishes much (that one was a simple NAA, nothing special). It also confused me for a while ;P

could be also that isn't resistant to jitter fluctuations

I think it's borderline. It easily falls within the description under "not an answer." It mostly (but not completely) fits under "spam." I'm not sure something so borderline should be subject to the penalties associated with spam deletion.
Of course this is totally academic, considering the post is already deleted =)

Ok I'm arming myself for a breakfast sandwich. I've got sprouted grain bread, thick center-cut uncured applewood bacon, organic eggs straight off the farm yesterday, I need cheese. Suggestions? Not cheddar, american, or gruyere.

@JasonC Farmers?

@Pham gone

9:29 PM
@LynnCrumbling Hmmm that's not a bad idea.
Plus I can go on a quest for the best farmers' cheese.
= An excuse for lots of sandwiches.

@JasonC Feta! Or Goat.
Or bleu.
I'm hungry.

@jadarnel27 Some kind of goat cheese would be a great idea. I love feta but it might be a bit overpowering.
Man
I want so much cheese now
Plus I always have difficulty making things with feta because I end up eating all the cheese while I'm making it.

I just think crumbly cheese melting on that breakfast sandwich would be amazing.
@JasonC Haha, that's quite a problem.

9:45 PM
Yeah bleu cheese; maybe an open-faced bleu-cheese breakfast sandwich for the full crumbly cheese melting effect.

@Anna look higher a bit :)

10:12 PM
@JasonC I'll be in NYC tomorrow; how close is it to the Javits Center?
@JasonC just google map'd it... pretty far.

@LynnCrumbling Yeah not that close; two different train lines and Javits is in midtown.
Even driving; crosstown is a nightmare if you're in a hurry.

@JasonC Yeah, and this will be a day trip, so I'll be at the trade show most of the day.

@LynnCrumbling Pro-tip, though, take a quick bus or train down to Union Square area or the West Village for lunch. Midtown food is overpriced and mostly average.
If you've got time for a bar / sitdown place, that is.

@JasonC I'll do that, if it's an option... I imagine that we'll all eat together as a group (my boss + 2 others), so it'll be a group-consensus type of thing. The other issue is that lunch time is actually a really bad time to eat lunch. The booth will see a lot of traffic between 11 and 2.
@JasonC would you walk from Penn Station to Javits, or take a taxi?

I'm in a bit of a pickle. I asked to get Thursday off from work on Tuesday, both in person and in mail, and it got approved in person, but my mail hasn't yet received an answer. I also can't just go to work in case I misunderstood because public transport probably is affected by a strike
should I just assume that it's approved and stay home?

10:22 PM
@LynnCrumbling Oh you're running a booth; is it for ad tech?
@LynnCrumbling I'd walk it's just a few blocks, and you would probably walk faster than a cab anyways.
I'm used to walking everywhere though, so I'm biased.

@JasonC our company makes kiosk software. CETW is the tradeshow.

It's supposed to rain though; I guess cab if it's raining and you're not down with that. It'll take you a half second to flag a cab at penn station anyways.

Noone with suggestions on what to do here?
if it makes any difference: I'm currently in my 6 weeks notice period

@LynnCrumbling Oh cool; have fun!

@JasonC The coworker I'm coming up with regularly runs several miles a day, so if you see a slightly overweight guy in slacks and a dress shirt pouring sweat, wave hello.

10:25 PM
I tried asking this in WP chat, but noones in there

@NateKerkhofs Why don't you check out workplace.stackexchange.com?
Oh
Post a question maybe; more people will likely see a post than a chat question.

@JasonC What kind of temps? Jacket or coat? It's in the high 50's/low 60's here.

@LynnCrumbling Weather.com says, for tomorrow, "Rain likely. High 58F. Winds ENE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 100%. Rainfall around a half an inch."
Lame.

A question is somewhat late now, as whatever answer I get probably won't be there before tomorrow, and I'd rather have my answer today so I know whether I need to set my clock or sleep in
It's 11 PM here in Belgium, so I don't quite have much time anymore

@NateKerkhofs Can you call the person who approved it in person?

10:27 PM
@NateKerkhofs FWIW, I'd go incredibly far to document it that it was already requested

set clock, then read an answer in the morning?

he's probably already sleeping now

Oh it's kind of late I guess.

What I'm currently thinking is: sleep in, if they call me asking why I'm not yet at work, tell them I thought it was approved

@NateKerkhofs CYA; people can't argue with hard proof. If it comes down to it, will the person that verbally approved it agree to vouch for you, even if it means getting in trouble themselves?

10:29 PM
he's my boss

I'd still post a question anyways and see if you get an answer in the morning. Otherwise the choice is really yours: 1) Trust the approval in person was OK, document what you can, don't go and hope it's fine, or 2) Go, risk your other plans, risk showing up when you have the day off, but no risk for the job.

I didn't really have other plans. I just need to pick up something at the post office, but apart from that, nothing special

I mean, have you asked your boss things in the past that he has approved in person, and has he honored them? Is he the type of person where an unofficial approval is generally followed through on?

@NateKerkhofs I'd send out emails. Remind your boss that the time off was already requested.
@JasonC Has a valid point wrt past experience.

from past experience and from what I generally know from the company atmosphere, they're kinda loose with such things

it's not a reallly strict thing, the approval via mail is just so there's a paper record

@NateKerkhofs What is the main source of your worry, then?

@JanDvorak agree. su, or none?

Didn't vote to migrate

I voted SU.

10:34 PM
well, I'm slightly concerned, since my boss once joked to a coworker that his leave wasn't approved yet in the beginning of the year, that they might call me in to work because it technically wasn't approved on paper
It's only a minor worry, but it would still make me somewhat stressed
and since I'm on my notice period, I'd rather not make any major mistakes that could lead to getting discharged sooner due to gross mistake

@NateKerkhofs Is that bit of stress more or less than the stress of finding transportation in the morning?

@JasonC Interesting. The Dalai Lama is at the Javits center today.

it's less bothersome than the transport stress

@LynnCrumbling Yeah! I saw that before when I checked the site.

@JasonC That would have been amusing. Missed him by a day.

10:37 PM
what about a walk?

It's 8 KM
walking that would take 2 hours single trip

you know what? i'm just going to go to bed now. I'll set my alarm clock for around 8:30 AM (normally at 7 AM), and if my boss calls, I'll explain that I thought it was approved. I mentioned it to him before I left work (that I assumed the day off was approved), and if he didn't actually approve, he should have said something at that time
I'll cya guys and gals in, say, 10 hours.
