@SomeKittens whether that phrasing is appropriate? in principle, sure. fine. however, I'd question whether or not that's a discussion that belongs on SE chat in the first place.
@SomeKittens so, you're expressing a feeling and then asking a question which... I'm not sure follows from it. That's a bit sketchy - I would say at minimum you'd want to shore up the connection there before asking the question.
I personally hate the attitude of "let's make sure everything said publicly must have repercussions on unrelated personal connections" that, sadly, has become somewhat commonplace on Twitter - IMHO, it borders on harassment, if not dancing cheerfully across that line and off toward the distant horizon on the far side.
At minimum though, it stifles discussion, reminding me of the stories I heard as a child about folks encouraged to "report on" their neighbors for various... beliefs or activities that weren't acceptable to the greater community.
@SomeKittens yeah - that is not a good example for anyone to follow, IMHO. No one came out of that looking good.

@ɥʇǝS that asterisk censoring was my idea, we don't like seeing offensive stuff in the transcript. The uncensored version is in the LQP HQ, once it's human verified, it comes here santized for flagging, 6 flags and boom!
@Loktar FWIW, I believe Arqade's chatroom eventually ended up banning that topic completely because, best intentions not withstanding, folks simply could not keep the discussion constructive.
Which is a shame - it's always a shame when folks can't discuss something politely, focusing on issues rather than individuals, but particularly so here when that is such a core part of our philosophy on the main sites.
But, I see why they did it. As you say, the entire discussion appears to have become overly emotional for many of the people involved.
@Shog9 I've always been under the impression (wrong word?) that those who cannot control their emotions in a topic discussion are usually wrong (subject to topic/opinionated discussions) or are just not worth discussing with.
I am not happy to see some of the aggression that came from the 3 people involved in the earlier drama, but I am also not happy to see that it spawned from referral link tracking of one who initiated a list of "idiots" but when somebody (with a poorly worded joke) disagrees, it's game over.
But I am willing to let it drop, for the sake of everybody's sanity.
This topic is more volatile than two polar resistant relgions going at it, which is shocking.
@SterlingArcher generally speaking - and I'm saying this for the benefit of a few people here who I know are room owners - if a problem in chat comes to the attention of folks outside the room, order within the room has broken down badly.
Y'all almost never want us moderating your room - we're disinclined to be delicate about it.
@Shog9 the only issues I've seen in the past was the bot welcome incident, and now this. I love it when mods come in, because typically they're funny, nice, and get rid of pests (aka the swastika bug)

@JanDvorak Because it's not really an advertisement. If you put your phone number in there... first off, you're stupid, but second off, that's not an advertisement. That's like saying anyone who puts an email in their post is a spammer.
I think it's borderline. It easily falls within the description under "not an answer." It mostly (but not completely) fits under "spam." I'm not sure something so borderline should be subject to the penalties associated with spam deletion.

@LynnCrumbling Pro-tip, though, take a quick bus or train down to Union Square area or the West Village for lunch. Midtown food is overpriced and mostly average.

@JasonC I'll do that, if it's an option... I imagine that we'll all eat together as a group (my boss + 2 others), so it'll be a group-consensus type of thing. The other issue is that lunch time is actually a really bad time to eat lunch. The booth will see a lot of traffic between 11 and 2.

I'm in a bit of a pickle. I asked to get Thursday off from work on Tuesday, both in person and in mail, and it got approved in person, but my mail hasn't yet received an answer. I also can't just go to work in case I misunderstood because public transport probably is affected by a strike
should I just assume that it's approved and stay home?
It's supposed to rain though; I guess cab if it's raining and you're not down with that. It'll take you a half second to flag a cab at penn station anyways.

@NateKerkhofs CYA; people can't argue with hard proof. If it comes down to it, will the person that verbally approved it agree to vouch for you, even if it means getting in trouble themselves?
I'd still post a question anyways and see if you get an answer in the morning. Otherwise the choice is really yours: 1) Trust the approval in person was OK, document what you can, don't go and hope it's fine, or 2) Go, risk your other plans, risk showing up when you have the day off, but no risk for the job.
I mean, have you asked your boss things in the past that he has approved in person, and has he honored them? Is he the type of person where an unofficial approval is generally followed through on?
well, I'm slightly concerned, since my boss once joked to a coworker that his leave wasn't approved yet in the beginning of the year, that they might call me in to work because it technically wasn't approved on paper
It's only a minor worry, but it would still make me somewhat stressed
and since I'm on my notice period, I'd rather not make any major mistakes that could lead to getting discharged sooner due to gross mistake
