@Sam primitives are faster than objects

@PatrickHofman fp

Sam
@InfiniteRecursion But a string is internally built on a char array (obviously both are reference types).

25
A: Why do you prefer char* instead of string, in C++?

Charles SalviaIt's safer to use std::string because you don't need to worry about allocating / deallocating memory for the string. The C++ std::string class is likely to use a char* array internally. However, the class will manage the allocation, reallocation, and deallocation of the internal array for you. ...

@Sam jQuery's selector is internally built on QSA ;-)

@Sam string is internally built on a char array plus lots of memory operations, a class is data + methods which operate on that data, primitives are faster, but require explicit handling

Sam
True.

BTW... Haskell's Strings are lists of characters ;-)

Sam
I just wasn't expecting such a large increase.

10:17 AM
literally just a type alias

@Sam That is why primitives are still there in every language, for such situations where performance is critical ;)

Haskell does have arrays, but they're pretty low-level and I haven't actually used them. The recommended course of action if you want constant-time lookup are Vectors, which are essentially a wrapper around Arrays.
I've only used those once, and only to wrap them in yet another data structure, that I've only used once, and then switched to a better algorithm.
