They tend to lag behind when multiple users speak, however.

Question: If the point of starring is to mark important stuff for posterity on the transcript, then shouldn't we be allowed to star our own posts, if we think they're important?

I think the idea is that you're biased.

I mean, there's no actual benefit to having your message starred, no rep involved like voting is on the actual sites
