hey hey, be nice everyone! ;-)

@AidenBell: How did you make a barcode that leads to your SO profile?

A QR Code is a matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by QR scanners, mobile phones with a camera, and smartphones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data. Common in Japan, where it was created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, the QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. QR is the acronym for Quick Response, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed. Overview Although initially used for tracking ...

Is the accept rate value heavily cached?

@rchern Should be
I think it's updated daily

This says 0%, but this shows accepted answers.

@rchern Definitely caching

I don't get cache errors like that. Can't the cache be updated whenever someone accepts an answer?

4:04 AM
So, what did I miss?

@TimStone Nothing much, I suppose

@YiJiang: Took the words right out of my mouth.
Look what I got in the mail today:
Hang on a second.....

@YiJiang Ah, good stuff. Hmm, I see Fosco got his shinies, wonder where mine are..

I got mine too (:

There we go.

4:10 AM
@rchern @Dexter Shut up, all of you. You're all making me jealous.

Hm, that concerns me :P

The next pic will concern you more.

Hahah, nice :)

That might be my new profile picture.

I need to follow more interesting people on Github..

4:14 AM
define interesting.

people who do interesting things

@Chacha102: Do you want people who sky dive or people who write code?

Write Code

it doesn't help if you use the word in its own definition hehehe

@Chacha102: Or do you want people who write code while sky diving?

4:16 AM
@Dexter All of the above
@rchern I extrapolated your message to mean: "Define what quality makes a person interesting"

sure.
but you didn't answer that.

if someone does interesting things I consider them interesting
I dunno, they work on projects on Github, commit often, and aren't completely stupid

it doesn't work if i just have to then ask "what are interesting things"

Have you look at this question:

and aren't a bot

Q: Good people or projects to follow in github ?

PedroI'm following a a bunch of interesting projects on Github lately, What projects or people are you following ? I'm not talking only ruby, or RoR, projects. I'm looking forward to see projects that make me a better programmer in any language, or projects where I can find great pieces of code, even...

@Chacha102 Ah, definitely cross me off the list of potential candidates then.
Hmm, stupid mail and it's not delivering me awesome things.

I follow glee and people that are following StackFlair or StackExchangeScripts hehe

Oh right, I was in the middle of that feature before I left. Should get back to that. :)

haha
do we need to start cracking whips around here? (;

Hahah, I'm going, I'm going. Did anyone else add anything new?

4:30 AM

I'm kidding about the whips q:

Oh, please don't make him get that out.

@YiJiang: I don't believe I've seen that... T-Shirts!!!

@Dexter THAT'S IT!!!!!
.... I blame the clipboard

LOL

4:34 AM
Let's just leave it at that. ;)

if you want to punish Dexter, you should create a room for you two (;
just click on the avatar and start a new one!

What's this suggested_buffer_size value returned by some of the SO API routes?

A: Can we have maximum length of string in API help pages?

Kevin MontroseAlright, here's what we're going to try. First off, we're not giving hard guarantees as to the maximum length of strings returned. Such a guarantee could create a situation where we might have to release an API revision just to accommodate increased text limits on the trilogy sites, or one - wh...

@YiJiang you always to use this font, I don't think I know what you think it's its name

1:20 PM
@radp The font's name is Aller, the French verb for go. Whatcha saying?

+seem
@YiJiang I was misusing the "You always seem to use this word, I don't think it means what you think it means" stock sentence.

1:35 PM
Morning everyone!

mornin'

@TheUnhandledException 'orning

yo

Hmmm... my userscript is about 50% finished

@YiJiang What's it do?

1:38 PM
It now functions pretty well. Where should I put it?
@TheUnhandledException Answer watcher that integrates into the SuperColliding DropDown Menu

my own answers?

@rchern Any answers, although for testing purposes I'm using the sandbox

How is it different than the inbox?

1:42 PM
@rchern You can't watch answers, like you can with questions (using favourite)

use case where you'd want to watch a specific answer rather than the question?

Also useful for me, because the @-mention system in comments doesn't really work very well for me
@rchern There are a bunch of feature-req out there for this if you search for it
Oh, and I added the ability to watch tag wikis too.

did you fix up the pull request for the chat script?

@rchern Hmm... what? Eh, no, it's just a bunch of comments... will change it if you want to

Well I did comment on the pull request after our convo yesterday...
> Timestamps commented out.
(;

1:48 PM
@YiJiang You should totally change your name to something Supported™
say, Yij Iang
or Fred. It's very comfortable to type.

I vote Fred
Or something completely different
maybe, I don't know... some type of Exception?
;-)

The Fascist Exception Handler, Extreme Prejudice Edition.

@TheUnhandledException throw new NameTooShortException

uh oh, I'm in trouble
doesn't like exception handlers
My project for the day is to add chat events to the SO Chat XMPP Bridge

@TheUnhandledException that's why you write in VB? :P

1:53 PM
@radp LOL

o:

I haven't used VB in probably 8 years

which means you used the TRUE VB stuff, not this VB.net tamed thing :P

My Hobby: Whenever my rep on MSO is not a nice, round number, I go through Jeff's least popular posts and downvote them.

...

2:02 PM

@radp I fixed some bugs with the XMPP script yesterday. I still don't know what was preventing you from connecting to my Jabber server, but, you should be able to connect from any Jabber account
I think @rchern is using a Jabber account that's not on my server. Is that correct @rchern ?

jabber.org

Maybe that would work for you @radp

eh, if I'm going to use another Jabber server, I'm using Google's.
room "address"?

the_tavern@msochat.smart-safe-secure.com
{"Room Name": "the_tavern", "Room Server": "msochat.smart-safe-secure.com"}

2:10 PM
@TheUnhandledException, you've probably noticed but it seems you fixed whatever was killing the script after a couple hours.

@rchern Yeah, I think the new polling helps greatly

Well, there are four of us in there now. Did you say something about the server, script and too much stress?

@YiJiang So there are. We'll see!
so far so good, at least on my end

okay, so what is sent via the XMPP interface is merely discarded :)

@radp for now, yeah

2:14 PM
yeah, no write functionality yet

no problem

It's very, very basic at the moment :-)
what I plan on doing first is setting up a bot or something which responds to things like /help
and then to build some sort of auth system

"please give me your password!"

but, I don't have a clear vision of that yet :-)
@radp I'm hoping that to start, "please give me a cookie" will work
but since the communication won't be coming from your IP, but rather from my server's IP, I highly doubt that will work

2:16 PM
giving you an auth cookie is not far enough from giving you a password :)

@radp True. One might say it's like running a userscript :-)
except
while I publish the source you don't know for sure I'm running the current source :-)
MWAHAHAHAHAAHAH! Achem, I mean...
It will probably have to be where the system sends you a link to a web page which you log in to via your OpenID provider and some black magic happens and then the XMPP server can auth as you
When I get this far, expect a formal question :-) Of course if anyone has ideas you're welcome to hack away. Which reminds me...

Can someone give me a hint what I have to tell Pidgin to try this? I'm too stupid for this...

@radp yeah, I've seen those

2:22 PM
@balpha You'll need to enable "Create this account on the server"

@balpha cool, because they don't work for me as you might have read :)

And obviously you can't be "josh" :-)

yeah, I tried that

I could get in via GTalk's XMPP however.

@balpha hmmm. Did you get "Network Error" like @radp did?

2:23 PM
I'm using Pidgin right now

what's the "resource" thing?

@balpha Identifies your computer

@balpha a description of what you're connecting from

So if you sign on from two computers you could have two resources, "Home" and "Work"
You can then tell the server to direct all messages to a given resource

in other words, it doesn't really matter

2:24 PM
right :-)

Once I was logged in to Trillian with my Jabber account all I had to do is Join Conference > {name: the_tavern, server: msochat.smart-safe-secure.com} and click Go (:

@balpha is trying to create an account on my server, like balpha@smart-safe-secure.com

worked now

which he just did

ah, got it

2:25 PM
The only problem for me is that the more people talk here, the more ridiculous color Pidgin has to resort to to differentiate the people.

pidgin had some wrong-by-default proxy settings

gotta love those

@radp is lime green at the moment, which is hideous...

test

that was odd, I just got kicked off my own server

2:27 PM
It still says four people here. Where's @balpha?

still fighting pidgin

maybe he's just created the account but not actually joined?

@TheUnhandledException Inactivity? I don't know, what set of settings do you have on that server?

c'mon @balpha! knock it out!

joining is deactivated here

2:28 PM
@YiJiang, I left it open all night with no issues

Also, hello @balpha!

yawns

g'morning @TimStone

Pidgin suddenly keeps segfaulting!

'Ello

2:30 PM
looks like it's working

@TimStone Want me to wake you up with the flashing banner instead of your usual morning cup of coffee?

@YiJiang No, I think I'm good :P

heh.
considers flagging a proper response to that being posted (;

Weird, pidgin doesn't convert @rchern's smileys into images. Oh, wait, that's right...

2:32 PM
LOL

@balpha you need the rchern() plugin

@TheUnhandledException Considered adding in server-side processing for those smiles? :P

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
4

Hmm. I don't like not knowing what post a vote got removed on. I wish we could see that info.

2:34 PM
@balpha so it is working? Good. Because pidgin keeps dying for me all of a sudden!

works fine

@TheUnhandledException Fine for me.

hmmm, let's see.... @TheUnhandledException's pidgin stopped working when @balpha connected...
who shall we /blame? (;

pidgin 2.7.3, fedora 13

Empathy 2.32.0.1, Ubuntu 10.10

2:36 PM
Pidgin 2.7.3, Ubuntu 10.10

Maybe @TheUnhandledException is using the Microsoft XMPP Server Evaluation Express Light Edition that only allows four users?

let me leave then

Well, he did say something about server, script and loads. Wonder what it was about...

he did?

@rchern He said that he didn't know how many people his server/script can handle

2:41 PM
has @The rejoined?
(or have I?)

@radp No. You should, though

sorry guys, phone, brb

Although it doesn't really serve any purpose except to make us seem like some sort of elite XMPP-watching chat-using erm... erm....

Stack-Exchange.
StackExchange™ EliteXMPP ChatLurkers™.

Erm.... class of MSO users that casually runs @TheUnhandledException's servers to the ground by inundating it with mindless crap like this message. Yeah, that's it! That's the point I was trying to make

2:43 PM
@radp ha

I kinda appreciate the fact I can now get bubble notifications from the tavern.
They tend to lag behind when multiple users speak, however.

Question: If the point of starring is to mark important stuff for posterity on the transcript, then shouldn't we be allowed to star our own posts, if we think they're important?

I think the idea is that you're biased.

I mean, there's no actual benefit to having your message starred, no rep involved like voting is on the actual sites

But then I'd have to star everything I say!

2:47 PM
You only get 30 stars anyway

You know it is valid in a way because someone else had to star it.

I think the "starring means it's important" idea has long been defeated by reality

Unless you're chacha and just pin stuff (;

Hahah

@balpha Should highlight more strongly in the faq that starring is not analogous to voting
Just curious, why aren't we using up our precious stock of 30 stars? Is it because there aren't anything useful to star?

2:54 PM
OK, I'm back
@balpha HAHA. Nope, Ignite Realtime Openfire Jabber Server

I assume mediumdeviation is @YiJiang?

@balpha Yeah

yes.

I'm working on events today @balpha

@YiJiang because I'm using stars for useful bits of info more than interesting and more than fun shrugs

2:56 PM
@rchern Too little of that here, ay?

the user list in XMPP should show all users in the SO chat room

I use stars for fun/interesting/important stuff
and there happens to be more of the former than the others.

@radp likewise

@rchern yeah, but when you say something, it usually gets starred because it contains "yeah", "no", "oy", or anything else, basically

2:57 PM
I know ):
@balpha, I think the only way to stop this is to give 1 rep per star you receive. People won't want to give me that much rep. (;

-1

@rchern -1 for that. You would've gotten downvoted to oblivion by now :)

Antistars please!!

haha
oy

I like starring. Sue me.

3:01 PM
haha

oh, that reminds me. why'd you create an event for moderator elections? I wasn't aware there were any concrete plans for that.

@radp "You guys can touch all my things" Ewww....

@rchern we were told it's 30 days from launch.

not concrete...

Our mods saying so is concrete enough for me :)
in Bridge on http://stackexchange.com Chat, Oct 6 at 21:17, by Juan Manuel
:7012 the elections will be in about 30 days

3:04 PM
what is concrete about about (;

I did write "circa" in the event title ;)
@balpha speaking of routes, is the /users/sites route here to stay or..?

Just weird/annoying that it comes up for everyone when it is a very flimsy event. WA is at 30 days and there's been no mention of elections.

@radp 'Tis the cold, hard November of 2010, when @radp stepped up to the podium, and accepted the ancient scepter of StackExchange mods, the holy almighty moderator diamond...

@rchern I'd blame their moderators!!

(use your imagination from this point on)

3:07 PM
...

@YiJiang ...then badp screws it up and goes straight to the bad users bin with Geoffrey.
in the stack exchange hell where questions burn forever unanswered.

I think it'll play out somewhat like Fable 3

....a stack exchange hell on a Mac, of all misfortunes.

Who'd like to be that chicken? :P
